Abstract:This paper addresses supervisor synthesis for discrete event systems modeled by controlled Petri nets. The considered control problem is to enforce a conjunction of generalized mutual exclusion constraint-, on a controlled Petri net where the influence uncontrollable subnets are joint-free nets. The properties of jointfree nets are proposed. The necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of the maximally permissive (optimal) supervisor is then obtained utilizing these properties. Furthermore, an algorithm is proposed to design the optimal supervisor with a complexity of polynomial times. The theoretic results are illustrated by an example of synthesizing the optimal supervisor for a manufacturing system.

Abstract:DES's ctrl-PN supervisors can be categoried into logic supervisors and structural supervisors in terms of their implementational method. Many researchers preferred structural supervisors as their fast executions of control actions and having integrated description of supervisory plus controlled plant. It is difficult using a structural supervisor to enforce OR-logic linear state constraints because the specification may form non-convex state space. In this paper, the authors first review the origination and signification of OR-logic specification synthesis problem, then introduce three mainstream synthesis methods and analyzes their virtues and shortcomings. In the end, some predictive research directions are presented.

Abstract:This paper addresses the supervisor synthesis on the forbidden state problem, in which the forbidden markings cannot be easily expressed as linear inequality constraints using reported methods. The system to be controlled is modelled by bounded Petri nets with uncontrollable transitions. Through the analysis of the reverse net, we obtain the weakly forbidden markings in order to deal with uncontrollable transitions. By introducing a transformation function, which facilitates not only tracking the system state but also determining the control pattern, we propose a synthesis method to obtain the maximally permissive supervisor. The method need not analyze the reachability graph and the online computation has the complexity of polynomial times. In addition, for a special class of generalized Petri nets called the input dominant Petri nets, the synthesis method can be applied conveniently, as illustrated by an example in the reported literature.

Abstract:This paper describes a method for synthesizing an optimal supervisor for a controlled Petri net. The considered class of control problems is to enforce a conjunction of general mutual exclusion constraints (GMEC) on a controlled Petri net, in which the influence uncontrollable subnets are forward synchronization and backward conflict free (FSBCF) nets. An FSBCF net is an ordinary Petri net in which each transition has exactly one input place, and each place has exactly one output transition. Its properties are given. Based on these properties, the criterion of the admissible markings is obtained in the form of a conjunction of linear inequalities. Then it is utilized to obtain the necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of the supervisor, and to construct the method to synthesize the optimal supervisor. Note that the supervisor can be online computed within polynomial times. Abstract:This paper addresses the supervisory control of the class of discrete event system (DES) modeled by a Petri net. The control specification described by a linear 'less-than-or-equal-to' inequality defined on the place marking of the net has been extensively studied in the reported literatures. However, in this paper we consider the control specification in the form of linear 'greater-than-or-equal-to' marking inequality. The supervisory control of the DES with 'greater-than-or-equal-to' constraint is implemented via enabling arc, which is a recently proposed arc in [14, 15] and can be regarded as complementarity of inhibitor arc. An example illustrates the supervisory control method presented in this paper.

Abstract:This paper addresses a synthesis method of combined controller for state machines. Firstly, the increment observers and the state observers of the forbidden places are introduced. Secondly, the criterion for an admissible marking is obtained based on the markings of the observers. Furthermore, this criterion is utilized to construct the algorithm of calculating the maximally permissive control. An example illustrates the theoretic results.

Abstract:Due to the introduction of uncontrollable transitions in the supervisory control of discrete event systems modeled by controlled Petri nets, a disjunction of several linear inequalities is needed to express the admissible markings. In this paper, we propose a two level hierarchical control synthesis method to deal with this kind of OR logic constraints. In the method, the constraint function plays an important role not only in the construction of the low level monitor but also in the determination of the control policy. The obtained supervisor is maximally permissive and the online computation has the complexity of polynomial times. An example is used to illustrate the proposed synthesis algorithm.

Abstract:The forward-synchronization and forward-conflict free (FSFCF) net is a class of Petri nets in which each transition has exactly one input place and each place has at most one input transition. For a class of control problems where the control specification is a general mutual exclusion constraint and the uncontrollable influencing subnet is an FSFCF net, an expression is given to calculate the maximally permissible control policy. An example illustrates the theoretical results.

Abstract:A quite great progress of the supervisory control theory for discrete event systems (DES) has been made in the past nearly twenty years, and now, automata, formal language and Petri nets become the main research tools. This paper focus on the Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES. Firstly, we review the research results in this field, and claim that there generally exists a problem in Petri nets based supervisory control theory of DES, that is, the deadlock caused by the controller introduced to enforce the given specification occurs in the closed-loop systems, especially the deadlock occurs in the closed-loop system in which the original plant is live. Finally, a possible research direction is presented for the solution of this problem.

Abstract:More and more control elements are incorporated into a single system by the information technology such as internet of things.Consequently,the scale of a control system increases quickly,and the control specification becomes more and more complicated.Any logic mistake that violates a given control specification may lead to a serious industrial failure and even security issue.Besides,there is a"state space explosion"for discrete event systems.These make a challenge for designing and debugging programs running in programmable logic controllers(PLCs)or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).The supervisory control theory of discrete event systems is to implement a given complicated logic specification by formal methods. The specification such as interlock,sequence,mutual exclusion,and language is expressed by a Petri net or automata.It is in turn translated into codes that can be executed by a PLC or FPGA.This paper surveys these formal methods for synthesis of logical controller,which are to shorten the costed time for control programs,to ease the reuse of them,and to increase the safety and reliability of them.

Abstract:In supervisory synthesis of discrete event system(DES)modeled by Petri nets with uncontrollable events,when the specifications are Parikh vector constraints,a method is proposed to transform illegal constraint into admissible constraint by using transformation matrix R.Matrix equation is constructed to obtain R,and the existence of R can be predicted by the compatibility of the matrix equation in advance.Generalized inverse matrix is applied to achieve the solution of R,as well as the admissible constraint and supervisor.The principle of cost is provided to search the supervisor with minimal control and observe cost.A simulation example shows the correctness and effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:In the context of networked discrete-event systems (DESs), communication delays and losses exist between the plant and the supervisor for observation and between the supervisor and the actuator for control. In this paper, we first introduce a new framework for supervisory control of networked DESs. Under the introduced framework, we address the state estimation problem for supervisor synthesis of networked DESs with both communication delays and losses. The estimation algorithm considers the effect of the controls imposed on the system. Additionally, the estimation algorithm is based on the control decisions available up to the moment, and all the future control decisions are assumed to be unknowable. Two notions, called “observation channel configuration” for tracking observation delays and losses and “control channel configuration” for tracking control delays and losses, are defined. Then, we introduce an online approach for state estimation of the controlled system. Compared with the existing approach, the proposed approach under the introduced framework can estimate the states of the controlled system more accurately. As an application of the proposed approach, we finally show that the existing methods can be applied to synthesize maximally permissible and safe networked supervisors.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of co-synthesis of edit function and supervisor for opacity enforcement in the supervisory control of discrete-event systems (DES), assuming the presence of an external (passive) intruder, where the following goals need to be achieved: 1) the external intruder should never infer the system secret, i.e., the system is opaque, and never be sure about the existence of the edit function, i.e., the edit function remains covert; 2) the controlled plant behaviors should satisfy some safety and nonblockingness requirements, in the presence of the edit function. We focus on the class of edit functions that satisfy the following properties: 1) the observation capability of the edit function in general can be different from those of the supervisor and the intruder; 2) the edit function can implement insertion, deletion, and replacement operations; 3) the edit function performs bounded edit operations, i.e., the length of each string output of the edit function is upper bounded by a given constant. We propose an approach to solve this co-synthesis problem by modeling it as a distributed supervisor synthesis problem in the Ramadge-Wonham supervisory control framework. By taking the special structure of this distributed supervisor synthesis problem into consideration and to improve the possibility of finding a non-empty distributed supervisor, we propose two novel synthesis heuristics that incrementally synthesize the supervisor and the edit function. The effectiveness of our approach is illustrated on an example in the enforcement of the location privacy.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider supervisory control of stochastic discrete event systems (SDESs) under linear temporal logic specifications. Applying the bounded synthesis, we reduce the supervisor synthesis into a problem of satisfying a safety condition. First, we consider a directed controller that allows at most one controllable event to be enabled. We assign a negative reward to the unsafe states and introduce an expected return with a state-dependent discount factor. We compute a winning region and a directed controller with the maximum satisfaction probability using a dynamic programming method, where the expected return is used as a value function. Next, we construct a permissive supervisor via the optimal value function. We show that the supervisor accomplishes the maximum satisfaction probability and maximizes the reachable set within the winning region. Finally, for an unknown SDES, we propose a two-stage model-free reinforcement learning method for efficient learning of the winning region and the directed controllers with the maximum satisfaction probability. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by simulation.

Abstract:In multi-agent systems (MAS), it is a basic mission to coordinate and control each agent to complete tasks on mutually exclusive resources due to the high cost of some hardware and software in reality. In supervisory control theory (SCT) of discrete-event systems (DES), a supremal supervisor is synthesized with respect to the system and all the specifications to make the system act as desired. However, the size of the plant model increases exponentially with the number of agents in MAS. To alleviate the state explosion problem when applying SCT to MAS, a synchronous product with constraints using bread-first search strategy is proposed to synthesize a supervisor for the system with respect to the mutex resources. And a framework for computing the supremal supervisor for the entire MAS with respect to all the specifications is presented. Experiments are studied to estimate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Contributions of the research are two-fold. Firstly, the state explosion problem associated with supervisory control of MAS is alleviated in a certain extent. Secondly, compared with decentralized or distributed control, it is not necessary to design a coordinator additionally.
Decentralized Supervisory Control of Discrete Event Systems for Bisimulation Equivalence

Abstract:In decentralized systems, branching behaviors naturally arise due to communication, unmodeled dynamics and system abstraction, which can not be adequately captured by the traditional sequencing-based language equivalence. As a finer behavior equivalence than language equivalence, bisimulation not only allows the full set of branching behaviors but also explicitly specifies the properties in terms of temporal logic such as CTL* and mu-calculus. This observation motivates us to consider the decentralized control of discrete event systems (DESs) for bisimulation equivalence in this paper, where the plant and the specification are taken to be nondeterministic and the supervisor is taken to be deterministic. An automata-based control framework is formalized, upon which we develop three architectures with respect to different decision fusion rules for the decentralized bisimilarity control, named a conjunctive architecture, a disjunctive architecture and a general architecture. Under theses three architectures, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of decentralized bisimilarity supervisors are derived respectively, which extend the traditional results of supervisory control from language equivalence to bisimulation equivalence. It is shown that these conditions can be verified with exponential complexity. Furthermore, the synthesis of bisimilarity supervisors is presented when the existence condition holds.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate multi-agent discrete-event systems with partial observation. The agents can be divided into several groups in each of which the agents have similar (isomorphic) state transition structures, and thus can be relabeled into the same template. Based on the template a scalable supervisor whose state size and computational cost are independent of the number of agents is designed for the case of partial observation. The scalable supervisor under partial observation does not need to be recomputed regardless of how many agents are added to or removed from the system. We generalize our earlier results to partial observation by proposing sufficient conditions for safety and maximal permissiveness of the scalable least restrictive supervisor on the template level. An example is provided to illustrate the proposed scalable supervisory synthesis.
