Abstract:The solution for the equations of atomic density matrix is obtained, without resorting to any approximation, in the Ξ-type of three-level system with lower-level coherence. The conditions on pumping are analyzed in the strong-coherence case for lasing without inversion and the saturation term is derived.

Abstract:The stationary properties of a saturation laser model with cross-correlation between the real and imaginary parts of the quantum noise are investigated theoretically. Using the Novikov theorem and the Sargent technique, we obtain the analytic expressions of the stationary probability density distribution, the mean, the variance and the skewness of the saturation laser model. The cross-correlation coefficient λ and other parameters can make the stationary probability density distribution P st (I) generate interesting two-extrema structure, one-extremum structure, or no-extremum structure. It is clearly found that a first- order-like-transition is induced by the coupling strength |λ| of the complex quantum noise terms in the saturation laser model. When the laser system is operated above the threshold, the mean 〈I〉 becomes larger and the output of the laser intensity increases; however the coupling strength |λ| attenuates the output of the laser intensity. When the laser is operated near and below the threshold, the mean 〈I〉 becomes smaller, the output of the laser intensity decreases, and |λ| still attenuates the output of the laser intensity. When a periodic signal is added to a saturation laser model with cross-correlation between quantum noise terms, the interesting stochastic resonance phenomena occur at λ=0. The noise intensity Q decreases the values of the resonance peak, however, the amplitude of the periodic signal B enhances the values of the resonance peak.

Abstract:The LWI operation condition for an open Λ-type three level atomic system is obtained by solving the steady-state density-matrix equation with the system being driven by a strong coherent field while the inherent pumping rate and decay rate being arbitrary.It is shown that the inversions of inherent pumping rate and spontaneous decay rate replace the inversion of population,and together help to realize lasing without population inversion.Furthermore,the LWI can be realized if just either one of the two inversions is fulfilled.A schrodinger equation of three-level atomic system with appropriate conditions is analytically solved to explain the quantum interference process that leads to LWI.

Abstract:We consider the linear nondegenerate Λ quantum beat laser, and investigate the possibility of lasing without inversion when coherence is established between the lower levels by applying a strong microwave field. Saturation terms are considered qualitatively for a steady state analysis. For the most favorable case of maximum coherence between the two lower levels we investigate phase locking and noninversion gain on both optical transitions.

Abstract:It is generally the case that lasing requires population inversion in order to overcome the absorption from the lower level. Lasing without inversion can be reached in polarization correlated spontaneous emission laser1 by using the atomic coherence between the two lasing levels. Another interesting possibility for obtaining lasing without inversion was proposed by Harris2 using the difference between the emission and absorption spectra due to Faro interferences.

Abstract:A model for an open four-level atomic system driven by two fields is presented.Density matrix equations of motion are obtained by electric dipole and rotating wave approximations.Physical mechanism of lasing without inversion(LWI) is discussed.Effects of detuning on gain without inversion and population difference are studied.Dispersion equals to zero as two driving and probe fields are resonant.As one driving field(probe field) is resonant,the gain and the population difference versus detuning of driving field(probe field)show even symmetry,and the dispersion shows central symmetry.As two or three of driving and probe fields are off-resonance,the symmetries disappear.LWI gain is obtained when the dispersion equals to zero.When both driving and probe fields are off-resonance,the gain,the dispersion and the population difference change greatly.High dispersion without absorption is obtained by adjusting suitable parameters of the system.

Abstract:We develop a nonlinear theory of lasing without inversion in a four level atomic system. The appearance of lasing without inversion is the result of atomic coherence induced between two lower levels by a Raman process. We consider both nondegenerate and degenerate configurations and obtain expressions for the linear gain and the laser output intensity. We identify the conditions for ideal lasing without inversion.

Abstract:The steady-state gain for a simple three-level atomic system has been analyzed. It is shown that lasing without population inversion between the lower excited state and the ground state can be established over a wide frequency range for probe field and driving field. Abstract:Inversionless gain in a degenerate three-level system driven by a strong external field and by collisions with a buffer gas is investigated. The mechanism of population distribution in upper laser level, contributed by the collision transfer, as well as by relaxation, induced by pressure of a buffer gas, is discussed in detail. Explicit formulae for analysis of optimal conditions are derived. The idea developed here for the incoherent pump could be generalized to other systems.

Abstract:We consider a simple model of a four level atom as a candidate for laser action without population inversion. Our system has a degenerate or quasi-degenerate ground state doublet and two higher excited states; one of these higher levels is coupled to the ground states by a coherent field of variable strength, whose role is to create atomic coherence between the lowest levels; the other is also coupled to the ground states but only when laser action develops. This model includes an incoherent pump mechanism to produce some population in the top lasing state. We calculate the absorption profile of the laser transition and identify the conditions under which gain may develop. We find that gain is available over a suitable range of values of the driving field strength and incoherent pump rates. The shape of the gain profile and the frequency at which the profile is maximum change as one varies the operating conditions. We provide a physical interpretation of our results with the help of a convenient set of dressed atomic states.

Abstract:The effect of exit rate and the ratio of atomic injection rate on gain behaviour has been investigated, and the effects of phase fluctuation on absorption, dispersion and population difference in an open four-level system have been analysed by using numerical simulation from the steady linear, analytical solution. The variation of the linewidth, Rabi frequency of the driving field, the exit rate or the ratio of atomic injection rate can change the lasing properties in the open system. The presence of finite linewidth due to driving-field phase fluctuation prevents the open four-level atomic system from obtaining a high refractive index along with zero absorption.

Abstract:A closed V-type three-level system was studied. In the system, atomic coherence is induced by a Raman process of coupling the two upper levels, and lasing occurs at the transition between the upper level and the lower level. The result show that this system can exhibit lasing without inversion in the bare state, and the gain arises from the atomic coherence in the dressed state.

Abstract:We consider a four-level atomic system with a degenerate or quasidegenerate ground-state doublet and two excited states. One of the upper levels is coupled to the ground doublet by a coherent field of variable strength, which we refer to as the Raman field, whose role is to create atomic coherence between the driven atomic states. The other higher lying state is coupled to the ground states when laser action develops. This model includes an incoherent pump mechanism to create some population in the top lasing state. In appropriate conditions, for the incoherent pump rate and the Raman field strength, the absorption profile of the laser transition develops gain features. We discuss the physical origin of this gain which we find to be the consequence of a population inversion between dressed atomic states. It is interesting to compare the results of this analysis with a similar study of a three-level lambda system which was previously recognized to yield lasing without inversion.1 In this case the appearance of gain can be attributed to the induced atomic coherence.

Abstract:Noninversion lasing was suggested and analyzed by Marcuse1 and Holt2 utilizing the fact that when atoms absorb radiation the absorption line is shifted slightly from the corresponding emission line due to atomic recoil. Connection is made between this concept and the free-electron laser. However, we note that the application of this noninversion lasing scheme due to atomic recoil could only be possible at very short wavelengths.

Abstract:By the advantage of a metastable state, amplification without inversion (AWI) has been exhibited with the remarkable characteristic that the population distribution of the upper state for the amplified transition is produced by the coupling coherent laser rather than direct incoherent pumping. We propose two similar four-level models that involve light amplification without inversion under certain atomic and driving conditions. For the first model, the Density-matrix calculations provide the steady-state condition for probe amplification from different origin, including net Raman gains, dressed-state inversion gain and inversionless gain. For the second model, we use quantum-jump theory to distinguish the mechanism of amplification. We explicitly show that the AWI is due to an asymmetry between three-photon stimulated emission and one-photon absorption processes. These results may have the potential applications in laser without inversion for generating short-wavelength laser.
