Abstract:A Coupled Level Set and Volume Of Fluid (CLSVOF) method is presented in this article for simulating the multi-bubble rising problem. This method can accurately conserve mass and capture gas/liquid moving interface to understated bubbles’ evolution in detail. In addition to capturing bubbles’ evolution, the present CLSVOF method is also combined with the projection method of flow field solver, which can provide two-phase flow field solutions. Comparisons with reference solutions have also been carried out for the single-bubble rising case. It is shown that the results obtained using the present method agree well with reference solutions, even where there are fewer grid points. The mass conservation performance is compared with the numerical result of the level set method. The present two-phase flow model is further adopted to study the high density ratio on bubbles’ dynamic and kinematic characteristics.

Abstract:In order to research the motion and evolution of a single bubble and two horizontally arranged bubbles in quiescent viscous liquid due to buoyancy, the VOF (volume of fluid) method was applied to track the interface, in which surface tension was taken into consideration. The two phase flow fields at different times coupled with principles of its wake velocity were studied. Afterwards, simulation results were made comparisons with the images taken in an experiment previously. It was indicated that the bottom of the bubble kept dimpling inwards, finally burst and diffused in water. Vortexes were clearly seen in the wake region. The two bubbles rose in a wobbly path, and didn't coalesce in the end. Results showed the good agreement between experiments and simulations. Thus, it offers a feasible simulation method for the advanced study of the two phase flow motion under water.
Numerical Modelling of Bubbling Flow Dynamic Behaviour in a Bubble Column

Abstract:2D and 3D numerical simulations with two-fluid approach were conducted to investigate the gas-liquid flow dynamic behaviour in a rectangle bubble column. In the simulations, k-ε and RNG k-ε turbulent models, which account for the influence of the bubbles on liquid phase turbulence, were employed to study the effect of such models on predication of the dynamic behaviour of the bubble plume. In addition, the influence of different interfacial force closures such as drag, lift and added mass forces were also assessed. The simulation results indicated that for the 2D cases, the use of k-ε model could merely yield a steady flow pattern with one big liquid circulation, while the use of RNG k-ε model could produce a steady flow pattern, characterised by the appearance of three large vortices. However, all the 3D simulations have captured the plume meandering behaviour. The results showed that the value of the turbulence eddy viscosity predicted with 3D simulation was one order smaller than that with 2D simulation. Particularly, the meandering period of the bubble plume predicted by RNG k-ε model, was obviously smaller than that predicted using k-ε model in 3D simulations. The former gave the average turbulence eddy viscosity to be almost one third of that predicted by the latter. The assessment of the use of different interfacial force closures and their combinations showed that the lift force has a pronounced effect on the result of bubbly flow behaviour besides the drag force. It was found that the predicted meandering period was much greater than the experimental observations without the inclusion of the lift force, while the predicted period was consistent with the experimental result when the lift force was considered. Our simulations also revealed that the inclusion of the added mass force could notably improve the prediction results.

Abstract:A modeling of gas-liquid interface is one of key issues of the numerical research on multiphase flows. Especially, a mechanism of bubble coalescence/repulsion is unresolved and there are no valid numerical models. The phenomenon may be related to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, hydrodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. In the experimental studies, it is revealed that a concentration of electrolyte solved in water and ion-pair specificity affect the bubble coalescence. Therefore, it is necessary to take such effects on bubble coalescence into consideration in a gas-liquid interfacial model. In the previous our study, having assumed that the interface has a finite thickness, we have developed a new gas-liquid interfacial model based on thermodynamic and mathematical approach. In that study, we have derived a new governing equation with free energy including the effect of the electric double layer caused by a contamination at the interface. In this paper, we applied the new interfacial model to 2-dimensional numerical simulation. Finally, we evaluated the new governing equation qualitatively by simulating a behavior of a single square microbubble and an interaction between two microbubbles including the electrical force.

Abstract:Modeling gas–liquid interfaces is a key issue in numerical research on multiphase flows. In particular, the mechanism of bubble coalescence/repulsion has not yet been clarified, and thus far, no valid numerical models have been developed. The mechanism may be related to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, hydrodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. Experimental studies have revealed that the concentration of electrolyte dissolved in water and the ion pairs affect bubble coalescence. Contamination such as ions adsorbed at the interface cannot be ignored when considering interfacial interaction. Interfacial effects may be more significant than gravitational effects especially when considering microbubble interactions. Therefore, it is necessary to consider such interfacial effects on microbubble coalescence when developing a gas–liquid interfacial model. In our previous study, we assumed that the interface exists as a thin fluid membrane with finite thickness. Then, we developed a new gas–liquid interfacial model on the basis of thermodynamic and mathematical approaches. In that study, a new governing equation was derived by incorporating the free energy, including the electrostatic potential due to contamination at the interface, into the conventional Navier–Stokes equation on the basis of a multi-scale concept. In the present study, a numerical test was performed for evaluating the surface tension effect of our new interfacial model. Then, the new governing equation was qualitatively evaluated by simulating the interaction between two microbubbles. In the simulation, we investigated microbubble behavior by considering electrostatic potentials of different magnitudes.
Numerical Simulations of Bubble Formation and Acoustic Characteristics from a Submerged Orifice: the Effects of Nozzle Wall Configurations

Abstract:The detachment of bubbles from an underwater nozzle inevitably generates distinct acoustic signals. This work proposes numerical simulation models to investigate the effect of different nozzle wall configurations on bubble formation and acoustic characteristics. A combination of large eddy simulation (LES) model and Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW-H) equation is successfully applied to predict bubble acoustic pressures. The adaptive filtering techniques of signal processing are utilized in bubble acoustic analyses. In particular, transient spectrum based on time–frequency analyses can not only precisely count the bubbling period but also effectively measure the bubble sizes. The numerical results for bubble size are in good agreement with the theoretical data (less than 10% deviation). The main results of this research show that the structure of the nozzle wall plays a guiding role in vortex motion around bubbles. The bubble size also increases with the increase in exit-lip thickness, whereas the bubbling rate decreases.
Numerical Analysis of Single Pulsating Bubble Interaction with a Free Surface in a Viscous Compressible Liquid

Abstract:Liquid viscosity has a potential effect on bubble dynamics. This paper is concerned with bubble dynamics in a compressible viscous liquid near the free surface. The liquid-gas flow is modeled using the Eulerian finite element method coupled with the volume of fluid method. The numerical results have been shown to be in excellent agreement with those from the spherical bubble theory and experiment. Parametric studies are carried out regarding the Reynolds number Re and the stand-off parameter ?(d). It clearly demonstrated that the liquid viscosity inhibits bubble pulsation, jet flow, free surface jet, and bubble splitting. Quantitatively, as Reynolds number Re decreases, the maximum bubble volume, jet tip velocity, free surface spike, and crown height decrease, and the toroidal bubble splitting weakens. As the stand-off parameter ?(d) increases, the maximum bubble volume, jet velocity, and bubble average pressure peak increase while the height of the free surface spike decreases. Close observation reveals that the free surface crown tends to disappear at small Re or large ?(d), further indicating the complex mechanism behind the crown spike evolution.

Abstract:In this study, numerical simulations of bubbly flows in an infinitely long vertical channel were performed. Generally, the upper and lower boundaries of such channels are simplified as periodic boundary conditions. Unlike horizontal channel flows, the presence of gravity in the streamwise direction complicates the establishment of periodic boundary conditions. Therefore, a specialized treatment is required to prevent fluid acceleration. Here, we developed a novel treatment for the imposition of periodic boundaries and proposed a new microbubble model to consider the surface tension effect of microbubbles. To detect each bubble in the flow field, we implemented a bubble identification algorithm, which facilitates a thorough statistical analysis of bubble number, size, and spatial distribution. Validation tests were conducted, and good agreement was achieved between our results and reference data. We also confirmed that the results obtained with periodic boundaries are consistent with those achieved without them. Finally, we simulated the evolution of rising bubble swarms in a quiescent liquid. The method presented here contributes to the numerical simulations of bubbly flows in industrial systems, including oil-gas transportation, bubble columns, and nuclear reactors.

Abstract:The collapse of a bubble in free flow field has been investigated theoretically and numerically.The Rayleigh equation is adopted to derive a new analytical solution of the evolution of a spherical bubble.A three-dimensional simulation of the behavior of a gas-filled bubble based on the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method is also performed,considering the effects of surface tension,viscosity and gas compressibility.The numerical result of the volume evolution of the bubble is in good agreement with the analytical solution during its first-stage collapse.Numerical results also show that the volume of the gas-filled bubble reaches its minimum value and then rebounds.Dramatic changes of bubble shape,field velocity and pressure occur in the vicinity of the turning point.

Abstract:The formation of a single bubble from an orifice in a solid surface, submerged in an in- compressible, viscous Newtonian liquid, is simulated. The finite element method is used to capture the multiscale physics associated with the problem and to track the evolution of the free surface explicitly. The results are compared to a recent experimental analysis and then used to obtain the global characteristics of the process, the formation time and volume of the bubble, for a range of orifice radii; Ohnesorge numbers, which combine the material parameters of the liquid; and volumetric gas flow rates. These benchmark calculations, for the parameter space of interest, are then utilised to validate a selection of scaling laws found in the literature for two regimes of bubble formation, the regimes of low and high gas flow rates.

Abstract:We employ three-dimensional, fully resolved numerical simulations using the volume-of-fluid method to study the motion and interaction of two in-line bubbles ascending in both Newtonian and shear-thinning fluids. Additionally, we explore passive scalar transfer between the fluid phases across a variety of fluidic conditions, modeling shear-thinning behavior in non-Newtonian fluids through the Carreau model. The impact of the Galilei (Ga) and Bond (Bo) numbers, the bubble pair radius ratio, the inelastic time constant (λ), and the flow index (n) on the bubbles dynamics and the transient Sherwood number (Sht) and the surface-averaged Sherwood number (⟨Sh⟩) are reported. Using the well-known Ga–Bo regime phase diagram for a single rising bubble in a Newtonian ambient fluid, the present numerical experiments are used to study the departure from this reference case due to the presence and characteristics of a second bubble and the non-Newtonian nature of the ambient fluid. When categorized based on the single bubble phase diagram, we found that in regimes I (axisymmetric) and III (oscillatory), a pair of bubbles does not breakup or merge during our simulations. However, their behaviors vary due to the second bubble and change in non-Newtonian fluid parameters like the inelastic time constant and flow index. Likewise, we explored this parameter space for regime II (skirted), where the two bubbles eventually merge, and regimes IV (peripheral breakup) and V (central breakup), known for multiple bubble breakups. Additionally, we present results on differently sized bubbles, showing that their merging tendency depends on their arrangement as leading or trailing positions in the pair.

Abstract:The dynamics of an oscillating bubble near a liquid–liquid interface is a complex multiphase flow problem due to the highly nonlinear interaction, such as interface fragmentation and bubble tearing. When one of the liquid mediums is non-Newtonian, its constitution would significantly influence both the bubble motion and the interface evolution. In this study, a numerical model is established based on the Eulerian finite element method with the non-Newtonian fluid described by the Herschel–Bulkley model. The numerical model is validated by comparing with experimental results for a non-spherical pulsating bubble at a water–oil interface and the analytical solution for the laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in a circular tube. According to the simulation and analysis with different case parameters, our findings suggest that the non-Newtonian fluid forms a crater when squeezed by the bubble, and the downward jet can penetrate the bubble and further deepen the crater. As the distance parameter increases, the crater gradually disappears or even bulges. Furthermore, the yield shear stress can give non-Newtonian fluid plastic properties similar to a solid, effectively reducing the bubble's pulsation and jet load. Additionally, the flow behavior index n comes from the power-law model for non-Newtonian fluids and significantly impacts the jet's impact process. When n≤1, the crater is likelier to become funnel-shaped, whereas when n > 1, it is likelier to become bullet-head-shaped. In addition to enhancing the bubble's nonsphericity, the reduction in Reynolds number also weakens the crimp deformation of the interface. When the distance parameter is zero, the larger the buoyancy parameter and the less deformable the non-Newtonian fluid, the easier the bubble to split by the annular jet.

Abstract:The Euler–Lagrange method is a great way for multiphase bubble flow simulation, the detailed information of bubbles can be effortlessly obtained, and it is helpful for the efficiency and safety of different industry processes. Traditionally, the computational fluid dynamics-discrete bubble model (CFD-DBM) method has always been used to simulate this flow process. Nevertheless, the ability of the traditional CFD-DBM method is significantly limited in terms of the size ratio between the grid and bubble, where the grid size must be larger than the bubble size. In reality, the bubble may be larger than the grid and the grid/bubble size ratio can be very large due to the effects of complex bubble dynamics (such as the bubble breakup and coalescence) and complex internal flows. To address this issue, an improved CFD-DBM method is proposed in this study, which can be used for the simulation with a wide grid/bubble size ratio in gas–liquid–bubble multiphase simulation, and the volume of fluid (VOF) method is applied to capture the interface between gas and liquid phases. A gradient-based interpolation method is employed to reconstruct the liquid velocity around the target bubble when the grid size is much larger than the bubble size. If the bubble size is comparable with or larger than the grid size, the interphase force correction and the field smoothing will be carried out within a spherical support area. Subsequently, the proposed model is validated by the comparison with a bubble column experiment, in terms of the bubble size distribution and bubble vertical velocity. The results demonstrate the high accuracy of the new method. Finally, the influence of different parameters including normal spring stiffness, critical Weber number, and the range of the spherical support area on the bubble flow is investigated.

Abstract:The mechanism of bubble coalescence and repulsion is difficult and unresolved. This problem is one of key issues of the numerical research on multiphase flows. In experimental studies, it is revealed that not only a concentration of electrolyte solved in water but also ino-pair specificity are important for bubble coalescence. In our previous study, we qualitatively evaluated the multi-scale multiphase flow equations by simple numerical simulation of 2-dimensional bubble behaviors. In our simulation, a liquid film was observed between two microbubbles. The results indicated the importance of the effect of the contamination at the interface for the bubble interaction. In the present study, the coalescence model is newly developed which is based on the conventional nucleation theory correlated with an electric conductivity due to a contamination in the liquid. A simple 3-dimensional microbubble interaction is simulated with the coalescence model. As a result, we realize the duration of contact before the coalescence of two microbubbles in this numerical simulation.

Abstract:The intricate nature of non-Newtonian fluid rheology has raised notable attention, particularly in gas–liquid systems, where the dispersed bubbles may generate shear forces and change the shear-dependent viscosity of the surrounding liquid. While the effective shear rate, γ̇eff=vb/Db , is commonly used to approximate the shear-thinning viscosity around spherical bubbles, deviations may arise for deformed bubbles present in real systems. This work combines laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the evolution of a single rising bubble in three different systems: water, glycerol/water solutions characterizing viscous-Newtonian systems, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) aqueous solutions exhibiting shear-thinning. The experiment was performed with bubble sizes of 1–9mm using imaging techniques. The measured fluid rheology is modelled by the Carreau model, and used in 3D direct numerical simulations based on a diffuse interface approach. The shear-thinning behaviors are found to increase the bubble terminal velocity through two distinct mechanisms: reducing the apparent viscosity around the bubble and promoting the bubble deformation. The extent of the shear-thinning effect depends on the three dominating regimes under which different rheology parameters play a significant role. Finally, empirical models for bubble terminal velocity and drag coefficient are evaluated using two shear-thinning viscosity estimations, based on the effective shear rate and the average shear-thinning viscosity near the bubble interface. The good agreement between experimental and simulation results validates the proposed models.

Abstract:We investigate numerically the dynamics of freely rising gas bubbles driven by buoyancy at low Reynolds numbers, focusing on two distinct characteristics: the clustering morphology and the probability density functions (p.d.f.) of the velocity fluctuations for bubbles. A modified Volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is implemented in our direct numerical simulations to circumvent the nonphysical coalescence between bubbles. Four values of the gas fraction are studied: 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The E_otv_os number and the Galileo number are fixed at Eo 1/4 2 and Ga 1/4 855, respectively. For a single rising bubble, the Reynolds number according to the terminal velocity and the bubble diameter is around 27, displaying an ellipsoidal shape. For a swarm of bubbles, both irregular and regular clustering configurations are observed in our numerical simulations as we vary the gas fraction, which can only be realized at high Reynolds numbers in the previous experiments due to the low gas fraction limit. Moreover, we find that the p.d.f.s for bubble velocity fluctuations exhibit distinctly different behavior from the high Reynolds number experiments. The horizontal components for these p.d.f.s approach Gaussian distributions only when the gas fraction is high, i.e., alpha = 15% and 20%. It suggests that the strong bubble-bubble interaction through their flow wakes is an efficient way to trigger the flow into turbulent states. Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:A numerical method for simulating the motion and deformation of an axisymmetric bubble or drop rising or falling in another infinite and initially stationary fluid is developed based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method in the frame of two incompressible and immiscible viscous fluids under the action of gravity, taking into consideration of surface tension effects. A comparison of the numerical results by this method with those by other works indicates the validity of the method. In the frame of inviscid and incompressible fluids without taking into consideration of surface tension effects, the mechanisms of the generation of the liquid jet and the transition from spherical shape to toroidal shape during the bubble or drop deformation, the increase of the ring diameter of the toroidal bubble or drop and the decrease of its cross-section area during its motion, and the effects of the density ratio of the two fluids on the deformation of the bubble or drop are analysed both theoretically and numerically.

Abstract:Simulating bubble rising in viscous liquids is challenging because of the large liquid-to-gas density ratio and complex topological evolution of the gas-liquid interface. In this study, a conservative phase-field model is employed to accurately track the interface during bubble rising, and the lattice Boltzmann model is used to determine the flow field driven by the buoyancy force and the surface tension force. To facilitate large-scale three-dimensional simulations, a parallel-adaptive mesh refinement algorithm is developed to reduce the computing overhead. The simulated bubble shapes under different configurations are compared with the shape chart through experiments [D. Bhaga and M. E. Weber, "Bubbles in viscous liquids: shapes, wakes, and velocities," J. Fluid Mech. <b>105</b>, 61–85 (1981)]. The influence of the numerical parameters (including domain size, surface tension, liquid viscosity, gravity, and density ratio) on the bubble dynamics is investigated, which demonstrates the capability of the current numerical scheme in simulating multiphase flow. Furthermore, complex topology changes including the bubble coalescence, splitting, and interplay with obstacles (i.e., squeeze deformation and bubble splitting) are simulated and compared in different cases, i.e., with different Reynolds, Eötvös, and Morton numbers. The effect of the initial bubble spacing on the coalescence of the two bubbles and the influence of boundary conditions on multiple bubble dynamics are investigated. When the bubbles can be completely blocked by the obstacle is quantified in terms of the obstacle width. Numerical results validate the robustness of the present numerical scheme in simulating multiphase flow.

Abstract:Large bubbles always undergo asymmetric paths due to the wake instability, which was rarely considered in the simulation of bubbly flow in complex flow systems such as bubble columns. Here, we propose a bubble path oscillation model considering the zigzag lateral motion caused by the periodic vortex shedding, which is added into the rectilinear bubble motion model in the Lagrange frame. This model is further adopted to simulate the flow of 4 mm bubbles with 680 < Re < 1000 in bubble columns, with the liquid flow predicted by the partially averaged Navier-Stokes model in the Euler frame. A parameter analysis is conducted by comparing the simulation results with the existing experimental data to determine the optimal oscillation amplitude of the path. The effects of oscillation amplitude on the bubble distribution, gas holdup, and flow field are further discussed. Our findings may contribute to the fundamental understanding and accurate simulation of bubbly flow.

Abstract:This article presents a three-dimensional numerical simulation of the effect of a uniform electric field on the dynamics of bubbles in a viscous fluid. The two-phase interface is captured utilizing a coupled volume-of-fluid and level set (VOSET) method by solving the full Navier–Stokes equations coupled with electric field equations. To track the interface more accurately, the dynamically adaptive octree grids are used to refine the grids around the interface. The effects of different parameters such as the electric Bond number, the ratio of electrical permittivity, the gravitational Bond number, and the Reynolds number on the motion and deformation of the bubble are investigated. According to the computational results, it is found that the electric field has a significant influence on the bubble dynamic behavior. Increase of the electric Bond number or the ratio of electrical permittivity results in the larger deformation and rising velocity of the bubble. For a higher electric Bond number and the Reynolds number, separations of the tail of the bubble are observed. In this case, the jet above the bubble is strong enough to turn the spherical bubble to a toroidal shape.
