Abstract:The critical ambient temperature is one of the measures for the thermal stability of energetic materials. Critical ambient temperature of explosive cylinders having finite size has been experimentally studied. The test samples were two kinds of plastic-bonded explosives: G1105 and JO 159. To predict the critical ambient temperatures of the explosives, the thermal explosion criteria ��cr of cylinders for three kinds of length-to- diameter ratios (d��l= 10mm�� 20mm, 20mm�� 30mm and 30mm��40mm) are calculated. It is shown that DSC-derived arrhenius kinetics and the calculated ��5cr can give good predictions for the critical ambient temperature of the energetic materials which are stable for the thermal stimuli.

Abstract:Although it is common in thermal-explosion theory to neglect the temperature dependence of thermophysical properties, there are circumstances in which this is not justifiable. This paper examines how (i) times-to-ignition and (ii) the Semenov criterion for criticality are affected when the heat-transfer coefficient χ is not constant but depends on temperature, χ/χ0=h(θ). A systematic approach is used that can cope with generalized forms of temperature dependence and concentration dependence of reaction rate.

Abstract:As a common and important type of thin-walled structure, large-scale cylindrical tanks are widely used for the storage of hazardous petrochemicals. The detonation of those flammable substances generates destructive explosive shock waves in an instant, which may cause serious damage to tanks and even bring economic losses and casualties. Accurate and rational determination of explosion loading on tanks is the foundation for structure damage analysis and explosion resistance design of tanks. For simulating explosion flow field in closed containers, a CFD model was established based on conservation equations, realizable k-ε turbulence models, EDC (Eddy-Dissipation-Concept) combustion models and SIMPLEC (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations with Consistent) algorithms. Compared with experimental data reported in existing literatures, the effectiveness and accuracy of the numerical methods and the CFD model were validated. And then on this basis, a series of numerical simulations have been carried out to ascertain the magnitude and distribution of internal explosion loading on tanks, taking into account the influences of tank capacity, H/D (height-to-diameter ratio), roof form, flammable gas species and height of underlying oil level. These indicate that maximum explosion loading on tanks increases along with increase of tank capacity, H/D and reactivity of flammable gas in general. And increases of the underlying oil volume and inert gas content in tanks are conducive to lowering the value of explosion loading. Moreover, tanks having dome roofs and rounded arc junctions show a better anti-explosion performance from the aspect of structural design.

Abstract:The conductive theory of thermal explosion in its original form (Frank-Kamenetskii, Acta phys. -chim . URSS (1939)) expresses the balance between heat generation and heat conduction in terms of the dimensionless parameter δ = [QEA a 2 0 c n 0 exp ( - E/RT a )]/ K RT 2 a Stability is lost when δ exceeds a critical value which, in this approximation, depends only on the geometry of the system. Matters are usually more complicated than this. First, heat transfer is often impeded both in the interior (by conduction) and at the surface; the relative importance of these impedances is expressed by the Biot number B i = X a o / K - Second, the temperature dependence of reaction rate may not be well enough represented by the 'exponential approximation’ (which simply implies a doubling of rate every so many degrees). The natural and convenient dimensionless measure here is the parameter ϵ = RT a /E. In the present paper, critical values for the parameter δ and for the dimensionless central-temperature excess Ɵ o have been evaluated for the whole range of Biot number from the uniform case (Semenov extreme, B i → 0) to the Frank-Kamenetskii extreme (B i →∞). The procedures can handle any temperature-dependence of rate and are illustrated here for the Arrhenius and 'bimolecular’ forms for which, k∝ exp ( — E /RT ) and k ∝T ½ exp ( - E /R T ) respectively. When E /RT a is not large, criticality is lost at ϵ = ϵ tr ≤ ¼. Such transitional values for the reduced ambient temperature ϵ, for the critical value of δ, and for the dimensionless central temperature excess Ɵ 0 have also been obtained. They are represented both graphically and numerically. The present results are also compared with earlier work.

Abstract:To study the influence of temperature on cylindrical fireworks and crackers in production and storage, this article establishes a physical and mathematical model of thermal explosion critical ambient temperature of finite cylindrical fireworks with shell based on two-dimensional steady state thermal explosion theory. The numerical program is written by difference method and Newton-homotopy method. The partial differential equations of thermal explosion model are calculated in Matlab. Comparison of numerical solutions and classical solutions proves the accuracy of model. The influence of Biot number of each surface and length diameter ratio on critical ambient temperature is analyzed. It is founded that the scope of length diameter ratio is 0.08<H<4.3$$ 0.08 < H < 4.3 $$ when Biot number tends to infinite. The thermal safety temperature of the fireworks without inner barrel when it is stored individually is obtained. This provides theoretical support for the safety of fireworks and crackers in production, storage transportation, and setting off process.

Abstract:A method for estimating critical temperatures (Tb) of thermal explosion for energetic materials is derived from Semenov's thermal explosion theory and the non-isothermal kinetic equation dα/dt = Af(α)e−E/RT using reasonable hypotheses. The final formula is simple: E(Tb − Ti0) − RT22 = 0. We can easily obtain the values of the thermal decomposition activation energy (E) and the onset temperature (Ti) from the non-isothermal DSC curves of any kind of energetic materials, and then calculate the critical temperature (Tb) of thermal explosion. The results obtained with this method coincide very well with the measured values for the common explosives HMX, RDX, Tetryl, and NTO as well as its ethylenediammonium salt (ENTO), potassium salt (KNTO), lead salt (PbNTO) and copper salt (CuNTO).

Abstract:Thermal explosion behavior of open-flow system involves with many important applied fields of industry such as chemical reactor, rocket and jet engine, and combustion stove. The introduced bifurcation theory and the presentation of the unity theory between thermal explosion and chain reaction one promote the development of thermal explosion remarkably.For combustible ignition problems, comparing with the bifurcation theory, the catastrophe theory is provided with some features, for instance, brevity, well-bedded classification method, and well to describing multi-parameters ignition system ill visual ways. It is of more advantages to integrate realize and cross-link lots of discontinuity behaviors happening in varying ignition system, starting from catastrophic mode which can describe the global characteristics of system. The catastrophe theory is more robust especially when the investigating system is a kind of incomplete system, where types and number of control variables are not clearly or imperfectly to be realized and expressed. Here, as it is hard to determine the perfect governing equations of the system, whether the bifurcation theory or the other quantitative mathematical tools is impossible to be applied to.Thermal explosion behaviors of open-flow system are also a kind of typical discontinuous phenomena. It has important significance to realize the thermal explosion laws happening in open-flow system by means of the catastrophe set, catastrophe mode and the acting relations between the control variables and the catastrophe mode.The thermal explosion behavior of first-order adiabatic CSTR System also has cusp catastrophe mechanism, and therefore is provided with some features such as kicking, hysteretic, bimodal, inaccessibility and divergence, and so on, too.

Abstract:Determining the criticality and disappearance of optically thin droplets (gas phase) by thermal explosions is crucial for maintaining thermal stability in various industrial and nonindustrial applications. The governing nonlinear ordinary differential equations of this problem make use of two distinct approximation models for thermal radiation loss, which were completed by Cogley et al. and Sohrab et al. Two methods of solving the problem – the Semenov method and the inflection point method – are used to identify the circumstances of criticality and disappearance of criticality (transition conditions). The governing equations utilize the use of the temperature-dependent Arrhenius frequency factor of the reaction and the thermal conductivity of the gas. The analytical solution of the equations yields the transitional values of the distinctive parameters at various initial conditions. Numerical methods are used to determine the equation's exact solution. At specific initial conditions, the impact of θo, θa, γ Sh,F , and α Sh,F on the temperature-time histories of ignition (supercritical region), non-ignition (subcritical region), and the critical boundary between them is derived. Notable effects on the ignition, non-ignition, and critical temperatures and times include the changing frequency of the reaction, the gas thermal conductivity, and two approximation models of radiation heat loss. The two radiation heat loss approximation models of the analytical and numerical findings are compared.

This paper examines how criticality and transition are affected in the uniform-temperature case when conventional heat-transfer coefficient χ depends on temperature. The types of dependence examined are chosen partly for their intrinsic importance and partly to highlight similarities and differences between uniform- and distributed-temperature fields.

Abstract:The initiation of explosion by steady intense light (from lasers or other sources) involves degradation of the radiation to heat, leading to self-heating and thermal runaway. The critical conditions for such a thermal mechanism can still be expressed in terms of the standard dimensionless group δ = qσ a 0 2 AEexp ( -E/RT a )/ k RT a 2 . When δ attains a critical value δ cr , thermal explosion occurs: the critical value depends on the intensity of the radiation. The dependence of δ cr on the light intensity β is computed numerically for an Arrhenius temperature-dependence of rate. The corresponding critical values for the reduced central temperature-excesses θ 0 , cr are also obtained. If the ambient temperature is too high or the activation energy is too low, so that є = RT a /E is not very small, the phenomenon of criticality disappears. Accurate transitional values for the reduced ambient temperature є tr are calculated as a function of the intensity of the light.

Abstract:Mathematical modeling is applied to study the electrothermal explosion conditions of a gasless system surrounded by a dielectric medium. It is shown how conductive heat exchange intensity and Joule heating power affect the formation of dimensionless temperature and concentration profiles, the integral depth of transformation, and the reaction front propagation velocity. The stages of ignition and reaction propagation are divided using a criterion that assumes a conversion depth of 0.99 at any point in the sample. The amount of product formed at the ignition stage is determined. It is demonstrated that a large transformation depth is achieved near critical conditions during ignition on the axis of the sample, thereby causing the displacement of the ignition zone from the axis to the surface of the sample.

Abstract:This paper discussed the thermal equilibrium and critical condition in exothermic reaction system, and deduced the values of dynamic parameters such as the judging criterion for thermal runaway, the ignition temperature and extinction temperature in the critical state of thermal runaway when there is no consumption of reaction materials. Then an approach was put forward to evaluate the potential risk of thermal runaway in exothermic reaction system by use of system safety index, and the equilibrium region of exothermic reaction systems was analyzed. Finally, paper takes the decomposing explosion of methyl nitrate as an example to illustrate how to use this approach to quantitatively evaluate the potential dangers in such exothermic reaction system with possibility of thermal explosion.

Abstract:Numerical attacks on the problem of criticality in thermally igniting systems with generalized resistance to heat-transfer are expensive in computer time and particular to the cases studied. We show here how very general circumstances may be treated analytically by straightforward perturbation methods (asymptotic expansions). Asymptotic expressions of considerable precision can be made (i) starting from the Semenov extreme (( Bi = 0) in terms of ( Bi ), and (ii) starting from the Frank-Kamenetskii extreme in terms of ( Bi ) -> ∞) in terms of ( Bi -1 They apply to any geometry and they are presented here for the infinite slab, the infinite cylinder and the sphere as expressions for critical values of the Frank-Kamenetskii or Semenov parameters and for critical centre temperature θ in terms of Biot number. The importance of the method is that it can cope with any temperature- dependence of rate coefficient f(θ) ), and although the asymptotic expansions are strictly valid only at the extremes, for δ they together cover the whole range of Biot numbers. Numerical comparisons are given for the case f(θ) = e θ , for which the results are well known and for the case f(θ) = exp[ θ /( 1+ ε θ )], corresponding to Arrhenius kinetics.

Abstract:Exothermic reaction systems of non-class A geometries are very common, with an endless rectangular rod typical. As a strong nonlinear source word is included in the governing equation, which is sensitive to the frank-kamenetskii parameter, there is no analytical solution. Many methods were previously suggested. However, with them are often non-physical solutions obtained. In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann process provides us with complete physical and precise solutions. We also analysed the sensitivity of the strong nonlinear source term and suggested advice for similar numerical calculations and experiments with thermal explosion.

Abstract:To analyze the thermal safety of cylindrical fireworks and crackers in storage and transportation, this article establishes a physical model and a mathematical model of thermal explosion time to ignition of finite cylindrical fireworks and crackers. And in order to simplify the thermal explosion model, effective Biot number about boundary condition is deduced according to the theory of heat transfer. The partial differential equation of thermal explosion model are calculated with difference method in Matlab program, to obtain the time to ignition as well as the temperature–time history before explosion system explodes. The rationality of effective Biot number and calculation method is proved through comparison of calculation solution and literature solution. Being the first to solve the problem of two-dimensional thermal explosion unsteady-state model of fireworks and crackers, where the upper surface, lower surface, and side surface have different heat dissipation conditions. Meanwhile, calculation steps were shown about a type of fireworks.

Abstract:Based on reasonable hypothesis, two general expressions and their six derived formulae for estimating the critical temperature (T-b) of thermal explosion for energetic materials (EM) were derived from the Semenov's thermal explosion theory and eight non-isothermal kinetic equations We can easily obtain the values of the initial temperature (T-0i) at which DSC Curve deviates from the baseline of the non-isothermal DSC curve of EM. the onset temperature (T-ei), the exothermic decomposition reaction kinetic parameters and the values of T-00 and T-e0 from the equation T-0i or (ei) = T-00 (or) (e0) + a(1)beta(1)+a(2)beta(2), + a(L-2)beta(L-2), i=1,2. ,L and then calculate the values of T-b by the six derived formulae. The T-b values for seven nitrosubstiluted azetidines, 3,3-dinitroazendiniurn nitrate (1), 3, 3-dinitroazeudinium picrate (2), 3,3-dinitroazetidinium-3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-onate (3), 1,3-bis(3'3'-dinitroazetidine group)-2,2-dinitiopropane (4), 1-(2',2',2'-trinitroethyl)-3-dinitroazetidine (5), 3,3-dibitroazetidinium perchlorate (6) and 1-(3',3-dinitroazetidineyl)-2,2-dinitropropane (7), obtained with the six derived formulae are agreeable to each other, whose differences are within 1.5% The results indicate that the heat-resistance stability of the seven nitrosubstituted azelidines decreases in the order 6>7>5>4>3>2>1

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze a quasi-linear parabolic initial-boundary problem describing the thermal explosion of a compressible micropolar real gas in one spatial dimension. The model contains five variables, mass density, velocity, microrotation, temperature, and the mass fraction of unburned fuel, while the associated problem contains homogeneous boundary conditions. The aim of this work is to prove the uniqueness theorem of the generalized solution for the mentioned initial-boundary problem. The uniqueness of the solution, together with the proven existence of the solution, makes the described initial-boundary problem theoretically consistent, which provides a basis for the development of numerical methods and the engineering application of the model.
