Abstract:In this paper, modifications to the finite-difference time-domain(FD-TD) method for modeling microwave pulse coupling into a slot, which is much narrower than one conventional FD-TD cell, are discussed. The coupling process of microwave pulse into a slot is studied by using the modified FD-TD method, and the dependence of microwave coupling on slot sizes, the carrier frequencies and the polarization directions of the incident waves is analysed. Resonant and enhancement effects which occur in this process are observed. The condition at which the resonant effect takes place is also presented.

Abstract:This paper experimentally studies the coupling coefficient of microwaves into rectangular slots. The frequency range is from 2 to 18GHz. The experimental method is presented, and the experimental setup is established. The experimental results show that the resonant effect will take place if the microwave wavelength is twice about the side length of the rectangular slot, and if the direction of the incident electric field is perpendicular to the long side of the slot. There is a strong coupling band near the resonant frequency, around which the enhancement effect can take place.

Abstract:The nonlinear coupling process of the high power microwave beams into the cavity with an aperture were studied by using Maxwell's equations and electron-fluid equations. Using the method of finite-difference time-domain, nonlinear coupling processes under different atmosphere conditions were calculated. Comparing with the linear coupling results, some new nonlinear coupling laws were concluded.

Abstract:During the research and development of electronic products,the design which considers the compatibility of both the electronic and magnetic character is popular and it can affect the performance of the whole system.Shielding technique is very important for electromagnetic compatibility,and it can cut off the coupling route effectively.However,the inevitable slots degrade shielding effectiveness greatly.It is very difficult to analyze the coupling of complex slots.In this paper,a simple transmission line model was given to approximately represent a narrow slot with depth and spoilage.Since the analysis of the coupling with conductivity was more meaningful,the coupling with small conductivity was also presented in detail.

Abstract:In high-power microwave applications, the electromagnetic-thermal effect of frequency selective surface (FSS) cannot be ignored. In this paper, the electromagnetic-thermal coupling effects of cross-slot FSS were studied. We used an equivalent circuit method and CST software to analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of cross-slot FSS. Then, we used multi-field simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics to study the thermal effect of the FSSs. To verify the simulation results, we used a horn antenna with a power of 20 W to radiate the FSSs and obtain the stable temperature distribution of the FSSs. By using simulations and experiments, it is found that the maximum temperature of the cross-slot FSS appears in the middle of the cross slot. It is also found that the FSS with a narrow slot has severer thermal effect than that with a wide slot. In addition, the effects of different incident angles on the temperature variation of FSS under TE and TM polarization were also studied. It is found that in TE polarization, with the increase in incident angle, the maximum stable temperature of FSS increases gradually. In TM polarization, with the increase in incident angle, the maximum stable temperature of FSS decreases gradually.

Abstract:The electromagnetic characteristics of a high speed IC power distribution network (PDN) are of vital important with the rapid increasing of operation speed and scale down CMOS manufacturing size, in particular, the fundamental electromagnetic theory including impedance and loop inductance of various designed IC power-plane structures. In addition, the area occupancy ratio of slot (AOROS) of irregular parallel-plane structures with multi-slots plays a key role in PDN impedance and loop inductance, where the influence of AOROS on impedance and loop inductance is investigated for various structures. Moreover, experimental work is carried out to validate the influence of AOROS on impedance and loop inductance of the PDN. The simulation and measurement of impedance are performed up to 10 GHz, and a good agreement is obtained between the simulation and experiment.

Abstract:The coupling process of electromagnetic pulse into single-deck and double-deck metallic cavity is simulated by using FDTD method respectively.The analysis of numerical solution shows that attenuation of field intensity became heavier as the distance to the slot is increasing,and the density of field coupled into double-deck metallic cavity is 12dB lower than the density of field coupled into single-deck metallic cavity.Besides,the simulation of electromagnetic pulse coupling with metallic cavity is important for the research of electromagnetic compatibility,interference and defense of computer system.

Abstract:An electron optical system with long-range low emission current density electron gun and H-plane double-slit coupling input-output RF coupler are studied for 340GHz sheet beam staggered double vane traveling wave tube (TWT). The long-range sheet beam electron gun can reduce the difficulties in assembling and adjusting of the whole magnetic system. Low emission current density can reduce the processing difficulty and improve the life of the electron gun. The bandwidth of the microwave circuits with H-plane double-slit input and output couplers is so broad that can approach 45GHz. Taking the high frequency loss of copper into account, the beam-wave interaction simulation shows that the whole design provides 14.6W of output power and 31.6dB gain at 340GHz.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of circular polarized waves, a physical model of coupling microwave pulses into slotted cavities is created, and Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) analysis is used to study the coupling effect of linear polarized waves and circular polarized waves. The results indicate that it is easier for circular polarized waves to couple into a cavity through slots than linear polarized waves, as there is less loss in coupling and, therefore, more liberal resonance in slotted cavities.

Abstract:The tuning structure loaded on the coupling slot in the two-gap coupled cavity was designed based on the equivalent circuit and electromagnetic field theory.The equivalent circuit was modeled and theoretically analyzed.The tuning structure was also simulated with software package CST.The calculated results show that the structure is capable of tuning the frequency of the two-gap coupled cavity in π mode,and that it changes the impedance characteristics in the overlapped mode,and reduces its impact on the field distribution at the gap.The simulated results,being consistent with the analytical ones,prove that the structure meets with the technical requirements and does a good job.We suggest that the preliminary results may be of much basic interest in development of multi-gap coupled cavity circuit and broad band extended interaction klystron.

Abstract:Abstract HPM (high-power microwave) weapons become the major threat to individual equipment which is developing to be unmanned and intelligent. A typical inertial device of individual equipment is taken as the research object to find out its coupling paths based on the analysis of function and structural characteristics, and the effects of HPM coupling to the typical inertial device are simulated by the numerical simulation software CST. The results shows that power and signal cables of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) accelerometer are the main coupling paths of HPM; The power cable has size coupling effect which is strongest when the sum of the cable length and twice the distance to the “ground” is equal to odd times of quarter wavelength, and weakest when the cable length is equal to even times of quarter wavelength; The signal cable has wavelength coupling effect that is positively correlated with cable length which is less than wavelength, and not affected by cable length which is greater than wavelength; The screen in signal cable not only greatly reduces the peak value of coupling voltage, but also effectively reduces the influence of cable length on the coupling effect. The research results provide support for the protection of individual inertial devices, and also provide a reference for the design of HPM weapons.

Abstract:The effects of structure parameters and structural deviations on the characteristics of photonic crystal directional couplers (PCDCs) were analyzed through a systematic simulation study. The relationship between coupling characteristics and structure parameters was discussed. The results reveal that the remained power in the coupling region is detrimental to reducing the insertion loss of PCDCs, especially for the PCDCs with shorter coupling length. An improved structure, which increases the radii of air holes in the post coupling region, was proposed to suppress the remained power and reduce the insertion loss effectively. The influence of structural deviations, which is caused by fabrication imperfections and results in the mismatch between experimental results and theoretical predictions, was also investigated using statistical methods. The simulation results show that the air hole position misalignment perpendicular to the waveguide direction has the largest effect on the insertion loss of PCDCs, and reducing r / a is helpful to improving the robustness of PCDCs.
Preliminary study of helix arranged coupling slots in coupled cavity structure

Abstract:A novel coupled cavity structure with helix arranged coupling slots has been studied. The dispersion characteristic of this structure is compared with hughes type coupled cavity structure to figure out its characteristic of weak dispersion. An extended interaction oscillator based on this structure has been operated to verify the feasibility of this novel coupled cavity structure. 2.4kW output power has been achieved when the voltage is 30.5kV and the current is 0.5A. Further study is ongoing to combine the advantages of coupled cavity structure and helix structure.

Abstract:The work presents analysis and simulations for apertures of square, rectangle and round shape on the cylinder. For a single slot, the coupling transmission coefficient (CTC) of square and round shape slot are similar to each other and have a frequency-related fluctuating uprising tendency, when long side of a vertical rectangle is a little smaller than the half wavelength, the coupling energy through slots can reach the maximum at the coupling resonance. The CTC mainly determined by the aspect ratio (AR) of the slot more than the perimeter of the slot, and by the length of the long side of slot rather than that of the short. For apertures arrays, CTC is dramatically decreased for all shapes of slots, and coupling resonant effects are restrained. The CTC depends upon the shapes, aspect ratio, perimeter and distributions of apertures arrays. The work will, therefore, be of use to designers of missiles and airplanes.

Abstract:Long distance coupling experiments in HT-7 were carried out with the method that the gas is puffed just around the antenna. Without gas puffing, only 115kW LHW are injected when the distance is up to about 8cm. By means of the CD4 puffing, the maximum of the 230kW LHW is stably coupled to the plasma by means of this gas puffing. The variation of the lined averaged density in the different channel gives a possible evidence of the ionization mechanism of neutral gas. The effect of the gas flow rate on the wave-plasma coupling shows that an optimized gas flow rate is necessary for good coupling.

Abstract:Based on the particle-in-cell technology and the secondary electron emission theory, a three-dimensional simulation method for multipactor is presented in this paper. By combining the finite difference time domain method and the particle tracing method, such an algorithm is self-consistent and accurate since the interaction between electromagnetic fields and particles is properly modeled. In the time domain aspect, the generation of multipactor can be easily visualized, which makes it possible to gain a deeper insight into the physical mechanism of this effect. In addition to the classic secondary electron emission model, the measured practical secondary electron yield is used, which increases the accuracy of the algorithm. In order to validate the method, the impedance transformer and ridge waveguide filter are studied. By analyzing the evolution of the secondaries obtained by our method, multipactor thresholds of these components are estimated, which show good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the most sensitive positions where multipactor occurs are determined from the phase focusing phenomenon, which is very meaningful for multipactor analysis and design.

The apertures used in the experiment mainly include elliptic aperture, circle, square loop, crossed rectangular slots, circular aperture, square aperture, equilateral triangular aperture, and parellel-oriented rectangular slots. The coupling coefficients for these apertures in the frequency range from 2 to 18GHz are presented and compared with that for the rectangular slot.

Abstract:A modified slotted helix slow-wave structure is proposed to develop high-power, wide-bandwidth millimeter TWT. The electromagnetic characteristics are calculated by HFSS. The results show that the modified structure has higher interaction impedance and lower attenuation compared with original slotted helix SWS, which would lead to higher output power in millimeterwave TWT.
