Abstract:The self-focusing transmission , filamentation, breakdown of intense laser pulses in water, and sound pressure waves generated during breakdown become a hot topic of intense laser pulse application research. Ionization generated bubbles compress the surrounding water bodies, which produces sound pressure waves underwater. Based on the previous theory, a dynamic model is developed, in which the gas content, viscosity coefficient and the surface tension coefficient are considered. The collapse process of double bubbles is also modeled, which could be applied to calculate the bubble radius and generated sound pressure waves. These theories are amended by introducing varying factors of water characters at different temperatures. Calculation results show that the bubbles shrink more violently and generate higher sound pressure waves when water temperature is higher. For double bubbles, higher sound pressure waves will be generated when the two bubbles are closer. The minimum collapse radiuses are varying linearly along with the distances between bubbles, and the generated maximum sound pressures are monotonically increasing.

Abstract:The evolution of shock waves produced by 7 ns laser pulses in air is investigated by time-resolved shadowgraph. A nodular structure of the shock wave is observed. It is found that the origin of the structure is the multi-longitudinal-microfocus caused by the astigmatism of the laser beam. The spherical shock waves formed by each microfocus expand gradually and collide with each other, resulting in the nodular structure of the shock wave.

Abstract:Abstract The objective of this paper is to observe and investigate the early evolution of the shock wave, induced by a nanosecond pulsed laser in still water. A numerical method is performed to calculate the propagation of the shock wave within 1 μs, after optical breakdown, based on the Gilmore model and the Kirkwood–Bethe hypothesis. The input parameters of the numerical method include the laser pulse duration, the size of the plasma, and the maximally extended cavitation bubble, which are measured utilizing a high time-resolved shadowgraph system. The calculation results are verified by shock wave observation experiments at the cavitation bubble expansion stage. The relative errors of the radiuses and the velocity of the shock wave front reach the maximum value of 45% at 5 ns after breakdown and decrease to less than 20% within 20 ns. The high attenuation characteristics of the shock wave after the optical breakdown are predicted by the numerical method. The quick time and space evolution of the shock wave are carefully analyzed. The normalized shock wave width is found to be independent of the laser energy and duration, and the energy partition ratio is around 2.0 using the nanosecond pulsed laser.

Abstract:In acoustics-related interdisciplinary areas, the shock wave of laser-induced breakdown has garnered significant attention. However, research on the propagation of shock waves in non-spherical symmetry is insufficient in both theoretical and experimental aspects. This paper aims to thoroughly study the evolution of shock wave directivity by employing the method of shadowgraph. The shock wave front is determined by the dark fringes in the shadowgraph image and the normal propagation speed of the shock wave is calculated using Huygens Principle. Subsequently, normal propagation speed is converted to pressure in different directions by employing the equation of state of the medium. It has been found that the spherical plasma produces an isotropic shock wave, whereas filamentary plasma generates a highly anisotropic one. To evaluate the anisotropic property of the shock wave, we introduce pressure directivity, which is defined as the pressure at any direction normalized by the maximum value. The temporal evolution of shock wave pressure directivity is obtained based on the shadowgraph images. In the case of filamentary plasma, there is a sudden transition of the pressure directivity in the axial from 40 ns to 165 ns, after which the pressure directivity is consistent with the hydrophone measurement. Based on the moving breakdown model of the plasma and the superposition principle, we propose a theoretical model to explain the experimental result of the pressure directivity. The outcome of our model exhibits considerable consistency with the experiment.

Abstract:We described the generation, measurement of the shock wave used in laser shock processing and its propagation in the target. The changes of peak pressure depending on the laser power density were studied. The generation of plasma ring at the surface of the target in the water-confinement was explained. The influence of the laser wavelength and pulse duration upon the maximum pressure and the pressure duration were discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents the results from molecular dynamics simulations that are performed to explore the properties of the shock wave during laser-assisted near field surface nanostructuring. A quasi-three dimensional model is constructed to study systems consisting of over 2 million atoms. This work includes studies on the velocity as well as pressure evolution of shock wave front with respect to different solid/gas molecular mass ratios and different ambient gas densities. The limitation on shock wave formation under the same laser fluence is also investigated. The results show that lower ratio of the solid/gas molecular weight weakens the strength of the shock wave during the nanostructuring process. Additionally, the formation and attenuation of the shock wave under different ambient gas conditions is studied in substantial detail.

Abstract:To characterize the laser-driven shock wave propagation process in anthracene molecules, the time-resolved Raman spectroscopy experiments were performed. After establishing a pressure distribution formula and using Lorenz profile to simulate the experimental Raman spectrum, the pressure distribution in the gauge layer during the pressure loading and unloading processes will be clarified in real time. The velocity of shock wave in the gauge layer, calculated through the shock front location at various delay time, is about 2.99 km s(-1). Noticing that the relative intensity of compressed Raman mode is proportional to the velocity of the shock wave, in this work, this relationship was identified in a new mathematical expression after establishing a physical model. The velocity of shock wave calculated from the new formula is about 3.02 km s(-1), which was in great agreement with the previous method and both methods are corresponded to practice.

Abstract:To improve the technology of modifying material properties by using laser induced shock waves,the properties of laser shock waves were studied.The piezoelectric waves were measured using a polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) piezoelectric gauge of a short rise time and a wide linear response range,together with an oscilloscope.Depending on the piezoelectric waves,laser-induced shock waves were measured.The laser-induced shock waves in the confinement geometry were analyzed and compared to that in the direct ablation regime.In the confined condition,the FWHM of laser-induced shock wave was three times that of laser and the peak pressure was much higher than that in the direct ablation regime.The average propagation velocity of the laser-induced shock wave in stainless steel was 5.72×103m/s.
Thermal Effects in Laser-Induced Strong Shock-Waves

Abstract:Laser induced shock waves were orginated by surface energy absorption, the thermal effects should be examined carefully. Work reported here was endeavored to improve the present shock theory to include the external heat source. A model with a moving boundary as ablation front of laser was used to avoid the complexity of plasma. Hyperbolic heat conduction equations were adopted due to the small time and space range. The thermal terms were coupled into Gruneisen EOS through internal energy. Approximate difference analysis to aluminum shows that the laser heating was limited near the ablation surface, and the shock pulse did not show obvious change compared with conventional case because the pressure–volume relation is not sensitive to temperature. Our results also indicates that unloading melting or structural transition may take in the thermal and pressure coupling region. These might have obvious influence to the shock pulse behavior.

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics and internal structure of shock waves in picosecond laser–material interaction are explored at the atomistic level. The pressure of the shock wave, its propagation, and interaction zone thickness between the plume and ambience are evaluated to study the effect of the laser absorption depth, ambient pressure, and laser fluence. Sound agreement is observed between the MD simulation and theoretical prediction of shock wave propagation and mass velocity. Due to the strong constraint from the compressed ambient gas, it is observed that the ablated plume could stop moving forward and mix with the ambient gas, or move backward to the target surface, leading to surface redeposition. Under smaller laser absorption depth, lower ambient pressure, or higher laser fluence, the shock wave will propagate faster and have a thicker interaction zone between the target and ambient gas.

Abstract:Abstract The velocity variation law of shock wave induced by millisecond-nanosecond combined-pulse laser has been investigated experimentally. The pulse delay and laser energy are important experimental variables. The method of laser shadowgraphy is used in the experiment. Experimental results show that when the pulse delay is 2.4 ms, the ms and ns laser energy density is 301 J cm −2 and 12 J cm −2 , respectively, the velocity of shock wave is 1.09 times faster than that induced by single ns pulse laser. It is inferred that the shock wave propagates in the plasma is faster than that in air. When the ms and ns laser energy density is 414.58 and 24 J cm −2 , the velocity of shock wave shows rising trend with pulse delay in a range of 1.4 ms > Δ t > 0.8 ms. It is indicated that with the increase of ns laser energy, the laser energy absorbed by laser-supported absorption wave increases. The mechanism of inverse bremsstrahlung absorption acts with target surface absorption simultaneously during the ns laser irradiation. Thus, the phenomenon of the double shock wave is induced. The numerical results of the phenomenon were accordance with experiment. The results of this research can provide a reference for the field of laser propulsion.

Abstract:The geometry of the extension tube has a great influence on the shock wave propagation and spontaneous ignition of high-pressure hydrogen release in this paper, piezoelectric pressure transducers, photodiodes and a high-speed camera are used to study the shock wave propagation and spontaneous ignition of high-pressure hydrogen released to the downstream sho (ϸ)-shaped extension tube. Experimental results show that the intensity of the leading shock wave is weakened due to the presence of branches when it propagates in the straight section of the sho-shaped tube, and a strong reflected shock wave is generated in the bend section. Spontaneous ignition is more prone to occur in the bend section than in the straight section, with a large optical signal value and long flame duration. However, due to the complex structure of the extension tube, there are still cases of the hydrogen flame extinguishing inside the tube even under high burst pressure. The flame detection time after the leading shock wave at the measured positions decreases with increasing burst pressure, and the time in the bend section is greater than that of the straight section. Radial flame expansion, flame separation, downstream flame extinction and upstream flame development, primary jet fire and secondary jet fire are successively observed outside the tube.
Shock Waves in Pulsed Laser Material Interaction: Internal Structure and Mass Penetration

Abstract:This work pioneers the atomistic modeling of the shock wave in picosecond laser-material interaction by simulating the material that is irradiated with a picosecond laser pulse (11.3 ps FWHM) in a 0.25 MPa background gas. The dynamic structure and mutual mass penetration between the plume and background gas are investigated in detail. In the shock wave the compressed ambient gas region has a very uniform temperature distribution while the temperature decreases from the front of the plume to its end. The group velocity of atoms in the shock wave front is much smaller than the shock wave propagation speed and experiences a fast decay due to momentum exchange with the ambient gas. Strong decay of the shock wave front temperature and pressure is observed while its density features much slower attenuation. An effective mixing length is designed to quantitatively evaluate the mutual mass penetration between the plume and background gas. This effective mixing length grows at a rate of ∼ 60 m/s. This fast mixing/mass penetration is largely due to the strong relative movement between the plume and the background gas. The MD results agree well with the analytical solution in terms of relating various shock wave strengths.Copyright © 2008 by ASME

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of shock wave which are produced by spherical projectiles hypervelocity impact on nitrogen-filled pressure vessels, apply ingonedimensional shock wave theory and numerical simulation method, at the condition of the debris clouds is completely ablated, the process of shock wave propagation in the gas is analyzed, and model of shock wave propagation is built. The law of shock wave propagation, the pressure of shock wave and the pressure pulse duration are obtained. The result shows that at the same impact velocity, the pressure of shock wave is increasing with gas pressure and projectile diameter. Fracture of pressure vessels impacted by hypervelocity projectiles with a diameter less than 3mm is governed by inflation pressure for projectile impact velocities of 7 km/s.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the basic shock wave relations and the stiffened gas equation of state, the laser-induced shock pressures, which are generated with homogenous rectangular laser pulse at power density of several GW/cm(2), are proposed theoretically and experimentally. The laser-induced shock pressures are affected by the laser power density as well as the shock velocities, initial densities and adiabatic exponents of the target material and confined water which are considered to be condensed matter other than "solid" or "perfect gas" in the previous work. Performed on Al-2024 alloys, the laser-induced shock wave was measured with the poly(vinylidene fluoride) transducer and recorded by the oscilloscope. The laser-induced shock pressure derived from the proposed method agrees much better with the experimental results than that using the "solid" or "perfect gas" theory. Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of the shock wave in laser-ablated argon plume with its evolution through the background gas is explored at the atomic level. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations have been conducted which give the insight into atomistic scale interaction and correlation effects of the propagating shock wave in the background medium. The supersonic shock wave front carries inherent sharp increase in density, temperature, and pressure. These thermodynamic parameters of the expanding shock wave are evaluated with emphasis on the kinetics of the shock wave front. The position of the shock wave front has been defined and determined over nanoseconds. Extensive research is elaborated upon to study the inside structural evolution of the shock wave and the effect of optical absorption depth.

Abstract:An experimental investigation on the flow structures and the strength of shock waves generated by high-pressure gas release through a tube into air was conducted. The results demonstrated that a leading shock wave was generated in front of the compressed gas jet and the shock wave speed increased firstly, then decreased and finally kept constant with an increase of the propagation distance in the tube. The experimentally measured Mach numbers of shock waves were close to those calculated from the theory of ideal shock tube flow. After spouting out of the tube, the normal shock quickly developed into a hemispherical shape. The Mach disk was observed in the under-expanded jet. For high-pressure combustible gas release, the concept of theoretical critical pressure of ignition was introduced and several theoretical critical pressures of common gaseous fuels were obtained.

Abstract:The laser-induced shock wave generated by the water confined regime in laser shock peening and its propagation in the Al2024 alloys are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Based on the condensed matter model, the pressure of plasma induced by homogenous nano-laser pulse is derived analytically and calculated from a simple partial differential equation. Using the derived plasma pressure as the input condition, the propagation of the shock wave in Al2024 is simulated by finite element method. The shock force at the back surface of Al2024 plate with different thickness were measured with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transducers and recorded by oscilloscope in the LSP experiment. By using water as a cushion at the Al0204-transducer and BK7-transducer interface, the impedance mismatch effect have been severely reduced. The experimental shock force profiles agree well with the simulated results, which indicates the analytical method based on the condensed matter model is an accurate way to conveniently calculate the laser-induced pressure from the laser power density.

Abstract:Laser shock peening has been widely used in anti-fatigue strengthening of metals. The different types of lasers (Flattop laser and Gaussian laser) used have influence on the pressure characteristics of shock wave and the strengthening effect. In this work, using PDV (photonic doppler velocimetry) system, the difference of peak pressure of Flattop laser-induced shock wave and Gaussian laser-induced shock wave is studied experimentally and theoretically. Research shows that the peak pressure of shock wave induced by Gaussian laser is higher than that of Flattop laser, because of the infinitesimal power density in the center of Gaussian laser spot is higher than that of Flattop laser, which also causes the Gaussian laser to break down the confinement layer more easily. Furthermore, at the same power density, Gaussian laser can implant a larger and deeper residual stress field in the material.

Abstract:The thermochemical non-equilibrium phenomena encountered by hypersonic vehicles present significant challenges in their design. To investigate the thermochemical reaction flow behind shock waves, the non-equilibrium radiation in the visible range using a shock tube was studied. Experiments were conducted with a shock velocity of 4.7 km/s, using nitrogen at a pressure of 20 Pa. To address measurement difficulties associated with weak radiation, a special square section shock tube with a side length of 380 mm was utilized. A high-speed camera characterized the shock wave's morphology, and a spectrograph and a monochromator captured the radiation. The spectra were analyzed, and the numerical spectra were compared with experimental results, showing a close match. Temperature changes behind the shock wave were obtained and compared with numerical predictions. The findings indicate that the vibrational temperatures are overestimated, while the vibrational relaxation time is likely underestimated, due to the oversimplified portrayals of the non-equilibrium relaxation process in the models. Additionally, both experimental and simulated time-resolved profiles of radiation intensity at specific wavelengths were analyzed. The gathered data aims to enhance computational fluid dynamics codes and radiation models, improving their predictive accuracy.
