Abstract:Let p be a prime larger than 3 and congruent to 3 modulo 4, and let G be the non-abelian group of order p^3 and exponent p. We study the structure of a putative difference set with parameters (p^3,p^3-12,p^3-34) in G which is fixed by a certain element of order p in Aut(G). We then give a construction of skew Hadamard difference set in the group G for each prime p3 that is congruent to 3 modulo 4. This is the first infinite family of non-abelian skew Hadamard difference sets. Finally, we show that the symmetric designs derived from these new difference sets are not isomorphic to the Paley designs.

Abstract:We revisit the old idea of constructing difference sets from cyclotomic classes. Two constructions of skew Hadamard difference sets are given in the additive groups of finite fields by using union of cyclotomic classes of Fq of order N=2p1m, where p1 is a prime and m a positive integer. Our main tools are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.

Abstract:We find new constructions of infinite families of skew Hadamard difference sets in elementary abelian groups under the assumption of the existence of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs. Our construction is based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields.

Abstract:In this note, we consider relative difference sets with the parameter (m, 2, m - 1, m-2/2) in a group G relative to a subgroup N. In the splitting case, G = H x N, we give a lower bound for the size of the commutator group H', and we show that H can not have a homomorphic image which is generalized dihedral. In the non-splitting case, we prove that there is no (2n, 2, 2n - 1, n - 1) relative difference set, in a generalized dihedral group of order 4n, n > 1.

Abstract:Motivated by a connection between semi-regular relative difference sets and mutually unbiased bases, we study relative difference sets with parameters (m,n,m,m/n) in groups of non-prime-power orders. Let p be an odd prime. We prove that there does not exist a (2p,p,2p,2) relative difference set in any group of order 2p^2, and an abelian (4p,p,4p,4) relative difference set can only exist in the group Z"2^2xZ"3^2. On the other hand, we construct a family of non-abelian relative difference sets with parameters (4q,q,4q,4), where q is an odd prime power greater than 9 and q=1(mod4). When q=p is a prime, p9, and p=1(mod4), the (4p,p,4p,4) non-abelian relative difference sets constructed here are genuinely non-abelian in the sense that there does not exist an abelian relative difference set with the same parameters.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:A skew Hadamard difference set (SHDS) is a difference set that satisfies the skew condition. It is known that if a group G admits a skew hadamard difference set, then G is a p-group with order congruent to 3 modulo 4. We will generalize skew Hadamard difference sets to Generalized Skew Hadamard Difference Sets (GSHDS) to cover the case when p is congruent to 1 module 4, and we will extend all known results that yield necessary existence conditions of skew Hadamard difference sets to our generalization, including the known exponent bounds. We will also show a set of necessary existence conditions a special family of groups. We will close the article with a general p-divisibility condition of the difference intersection numbers of a GSHDS for a special class of subgroups L.

Abstract:We study finite groups $G$ having a normal subgroup $H$ and $D \subset G \setminus H, D \cap D^{-1}=\emptyset,$ such that the multiset $\{ xy^{-1}:x,y \in D\}$ has every non-identity element occur the same number of times (such a $D$ is called a {\it DRAD difference set}). We show that there are no such groups of order $4p^2$, where $p$ is an odd prime.

Abstract:There are exactly 35 inequivalent (36, 15, 6) difference sets in nine groups. Eight of the nine groups have a normal Sylow 3-subgroup. We give a straightforward spread construction which explains the 32 inequivalent difference sets in these eight groups. An interesting variation on this construction provides the three difference sets in the ninth group.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that an abelian group contains $(2^{2m+1}(2^{m-1}+1), 2^m(2^m+1), 2^m)$-difference sets with $m\geqslant 3$ if and only if it contains an elementary abelian 2-group of order $2^{2m}$. Our proof shows that the method of constructing such difference sets is essentially unique.

Abstract:Recent results of Hindman, Leader and Strauss and of the second author and Rinot showed that some natural analogs of Hindman's Theorem fail for all uncountable cardinals. Results in the positive direction were obtained by Komjáth, the first author, and the second author and Lee, who showed that there are arbitrarily large Abelian groups satisfying some Hindman-type property. Inspired by an analogous result studied by the first author in the countable setting, we prove a new variant of Hindman's Theorem for uncountable cardinals, called the Adjacent Hindman's Theorem: For every $\kappa$ there is a $\lambda$ such that, whenever a group $G$ of cardinality $\lambda$ is coloured with $\kappa$ colours, there exists a $\lambda$-sized injective sequence of elements of $G$ with all finite products of adjacent terms of the sequence of the same colour. We obtain bounds on $\lambda$ as a function of $\kappa$, and prove that such bounds are optimal. This is the first example of a Hindman-type result for uncountable cardinals that we can prove also in the non-Abelian setting and, furthermore, it is the first such example where monochromatic products (or sums) of unbounded length are guaranteed.

Restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups

Abstract:We establish the restricted sumset analogue of the celebrated conjecture of Sárközy on additive decompositions of the set of nonzero squares over a finite field. More precisely, we show that if $q>13$ is an odd prime power, then the set of nonzero squares in $\mathbb{F}_q$ cannot be written as a restricted sumset $A \hat{+} A$, extending a result of Shkredov. More generally, we study restricted sumsets in multiplicative subgroups over finite fields as well as restricted sumsets in perfect powers (over integers) motivated by a question of Erdős and Moser. We also prove an analogue of van Lint-MacWilliams' conjecture for restricted sumsets, which appears to be the first analogue of Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in a family of Cayley sum graphs.

New constructions of Hadamard matrices

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a number of new infinite families of Hadamard matrices. Our constructions are based on four new constructions of difference families with four or eight blocks. By applying the Wallis-Whiteman array or the Kharaghani array to the difference families constructed, we obtain new Hadamard matrices of order $4(uv+1)$ for $u=2$ and $v\in \Phi_1\cup \Phi_2 \cup \Phi_3 \cup \Phi_4$; and for $u\in \{3,5\}$ and $v\in \Phi_1\cup \Phi_2 \cup \Phi_3$. Here, $\Phi_1=\{q^2:q\equiv 1\pmod{4}\mbox{ is a prime power}\}$, $\Phi_2=\{n^4\in \mathbb{N}:n\equiv 1\pmod{2}\} \cup \{9n^4\in \mathbb{N}:n\equiv 1\pmod{2}\}$, $\Phi_3=\{5\}$ and $\Phi_4=\{13,37\}$. Moreover, our construction also yields new Hadamard matrices of order $8(uv+1)$ for any $u\in \Phi_1\cup \Phi_2$ and $v\in \Phi_1\cup \Phi_2 \cup \Phi_3$.

Abstract:Using a class of permutation polynomials of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$ obtained from the Ree-Tits symplectic spreads in $PG(3,3^{2h+1})$, we construct a family of skew Hadamard difference sets in the additive group of $F_{3^{2h+1}}$. With the help of a computer, we show that these skew Hadamard difference sets are new when $h=2$ and $h=3$. We conjecture that they are always new when $h>3$. Furthermore, we present a variation of the classical construction of the twin prime power difference sets, and show that inequivalent skew Hadamard difference sets lead to inequivalent difference sets with twin prime power parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider regular automorphism groups of graphs in the RT$2$ family and the Davis-Xiang family and amorphic abelian Cayley schemes from these graphs. We derive general results on the existence of non-abelian regular automorphism groups from abelian regular automorphism groups and apply them to the RT$2$ family and Davis-Xiang family and their amorphic abelian Cayley schemes to produce amorphic non-abelian Cayley schemes.

Abstract:Signed difference sets have interesting applications in communications and coding theory. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set in a finite group $G$ of order $v$ is a subset $D$ of $G$ with $k$ distinct elements such that the expressions $xy^{-1}$ for all distinct two elements $x,y\in D$, represent each non-identity element in $G$ exactly $\lambda$ times. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-signed difference set is a generalization of a $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set $D$, which satisfies all properties of $D$, but has a sign for each element in $D$. We will show some new existence results for signed difference sets by using partial difference sets, product methods, and cyclotomic classes.

Abstract:Let k be an odd positive integer, L a lattice on a regular positive definite k -dimensional quadratic space over ℚ , N_L the level of L , and ℳ(L) be the linear space of θ -series attached to the distinct classes in the genus of L . We prove that, for an odd prime p|N_L , if L_p=L_p,1 L_p,2 , where L_p,1 is unimodular, L_p,2 is ( p )-modular, and ℚ_pL_p,2 is anisotropic, then ℳ(L;p):= ℳ(L) +T_p^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_p^2 . If L_2 is isometric to ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1/2; 1/2 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ 2ε⟩ or ( [ 0 1; 1 0 ]) ^κ ⟨ε⟩ with ε∈ℤ_2^× and κ :=k-1/2 , then ℳ(L;2):=T_2^2.ℳ(L)+T_2^2^2. ℳ(L) is stable under the Hecke operator T_2^2 . Furthermore, we determine some invariant subspaces of the cusp forms for the Hecke operators.
Modular Golomb rulers and almost difference sets

Abstract:A $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set in a group $G$ of order $v$ is a subset $\{d_1, d_2, \ldots,d_k\}$ of $G$ such that $D=\sum d_i$ in the group ring ${\mathbb Z}[G]$ satisfies $$D D^{-1} = n + \lambda G,$$ where $n=k-\lambda$. In other words, the nonzero elements of $G$ all occur exactly $\lambda$ times as differences of elements in $D$. A $(v,k,\lambda,t)$-almost difference set has $t$ nonzero elements of $G$ occurring $\lambda$ times, and the other $v-1-t$ occurring $\lambda+1$ times. When $\lambda=0$, this is equivalent to a modular Golomb ruler. In this paper we investigate existence questions on these objects, and extend previous results constructing almost difference sets by adding or removing an element from a difference set.
