Abstract:A highly selective chemosensor (1) bearing three salphen pockets fulfilled the recognition of Cu2+ via obvious color change and significant absorption enhancement upon the introduction of Cu2+. Abstract:Two N-alkylated diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives, namely, FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8, were prepared and applied in the ratiometric and fluorescent detection of Cu2+ in acetonitrile. The distinct optical changes of two probes were attributed to the fast radical process of diketopyrrolopyrrole triggered by Cu2+. This reaction mechanism was investigated by NMR, MS and EPR experiments and DFT theoretical calculations. The detection of Cu2+ with FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 were completed instantaneously, making them convenient for practical real-time operation. The limits of detection of FDPP-C8 and TDPP-C8 for Cu2+ were calculated as 65 and 127 nM, respectively. Relevant competitive ions exerted no effect. In addition, the intrinsic two-photon absorption properties of FDPP-C8 were also investigated and successfully used in the detection of Cu2+. Furthermore, given that Cu2+/Cu+-involved radical process is solvent dependent, TDPP-C8 was used to construct a INHIBIT logic gate at the molecular level with DMF and Cu2+ as inputs.

Abstract:A new diketopyrrolopyrrole amphiphile, namely 2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl)- 3,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (PyDPP), is designed and synthesized as a novel ratiometric/fluorescent chemosensor for Cu2+/Hg2+. PyDPP forms soluble loose nanoaggregates by molecular self-assembly in water and maintains intrinsic bright fluorescence and color. The UV–vis absorption spectra data show that PyDPP nanoaggregates exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward Cu2+/Hg2+ among other metal cations in PBS (pH 7.4) solution. The reaction mechanism involved in PyDPP-Cu/Hg was investigated by MS, XPS and DFT calculation. The limit of detection of the present nanosensor for Cu2+ is calculated to be 87 nM. This research provides another view in the design and application of FONs nanosensor for heavy metal ions detection.

Abstract:A new hemicyanine-based near-infrared "off-on" recognition Cu 2+ fluorescent probe NRh-NP was designed and successfully synthesized. The structure of NRh-NP was characterized by NMR, ESI-HRMS and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. NRh-NP has high sensitivity, selectivity and a low limit of detection (33 nM as fluorescence sensor and 35 nM as UV sensor) to Cu 2+ . According to Job's plot and ESI-HRMS, the coordination ratio of NRh-NP to Cu 2+ was 1:1. DFT theoretical calculations proved that the sensor mechanism was photo-induced electron transfer (PET). More importantly, NRh-NP has excellent membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity, which could be used not only for the detection of Cu 2+ in human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), but also for imaging Cu 2+ in living mice.

Abstract:Copper (II) (Cu2+) and 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) are harmful substances usually found in foods. Therefore, establishing rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection method for both of these substances is significant research work. A pyrene-based fluorescent sensor (PP) was synthesized to enable highly selective and sensitive simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and 3-NPA in food samples. Initially, PP showed weak fluorescence because of the photo–induced electron transfer process (PET). Upon the presence of Cu2+, the emission of PP at 454nm enhanced owing to the coordination between PP and Cu2+ which hindered the PET. Additionally, under 365nm UV irradiation, the color of the PP solution transitions from orange to bright blue, allowing for naked-eye detection. The sensor PP demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu2+ compared to other competitive metal ions, with the detection limit was 0.036μM, within a linear range of 0–20μM. The binding stoichiometry between PP and Cu2+ is determined to be 2:1 using the Job’s plot method, with a binding constant (Ka) of 7.2 ×103M−1/2. Furthermore, at lower pH (in the range 2.55–5.98), the emission of PP was also enhanced due to the protonation of PP which suppresses the PET process. Given its sensitive and linear response to acidic pH, PP exhibits excellent sensing performance for detecting 3-NPA, with a low detection limit of 0.32μM, surpassing previously reported methods in terms of detection sensitivity.

The fluorescence intensity of the chemosensor in CH3CN solution was enhanced 160-fold after the addition of 10 equiv. Cu2+ over other metal ions. Abstract:A new rhodamine B derivative colorimetric and fluorescent sensor (1) was synthesized by condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, which showed reversible and highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ over other examined metal ions. Upon addition of Cu2+, sensor 1 exhibits remarkably enhanced absorbance intensity and color change from colorless to pink in DMSO and MeCN aqueous buffer solution or pure MeCN, and shows significant off–on fluorescence accompanied by color changes from colorless to orange in MeCN. The sensor 1 was also successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in water samples.

Abstract:A highly selective and sensitive acridine-based colorimetric sensor 2-((7-chloro-2-methoxybenzo[b][1,5]naphthyridin-10-yl)amino)phenol (NAP) was developed for detection of Cu2+ ions both in aqueous solution and on test papers. Abstract:A novel molecular chemosensor ( E )-5-(2-(4-nitrophenyl) azo)-2-methylquinolin-8-ol (NPAMQ) was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, UV–Vis, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and TGA. The sensing ability of NPAMQ towards several cations and anions was evaluated by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy and naked-eye detection. The chemosensor NPAMQ displayed a distinct color change (from yellow to red) towards Cu 2+ ions in less than a hundredth of a second, which is easily recognized by the naked eye. UV–Vis spectroscopic studies also proved a bathochromic shift (lower energy) in absorption spectra of NPAMQ in the presence of Cu 2+ ions due to the formation of the stable complex NPAMQ-Cu 2+ . The NPAMQ showed a linear response toward Cu 2+ ions (0–50 μM) with detection limits (LOD) of 81.7 nM (0.0197 mg/L). Job's plot showed formation of a complex between Cu 2+ ions and chemosensor NPAMQ (NPAMQ-Cu 2+ complex) which reveals presence of a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. Moreover, the binding constant of the NPAMQ-Cu 2+ complex was measured to be 3.07 × 10 4 M −1 . NPAMQ can be easily recycled using EDTA and reused for over 5 times preserving a high level of detection efficiency. For better understanding the optical characteristics of the sensor, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for NPAMQ and NPAMQ-Cu 2+ . Furthermore, the chemosensor NPAMQ was applied for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of Cu 2+ ions in foodstuff and water samples. The paper test strips containing NPAMQ chemosensor were also fabricated and applied for detection of Cu 2+ ions in aqueous solutions. This designed sensor with great features like cost-effective, short response times, excellent selectivity and sensitively can be used at different pH for detection of copper ions in industrial and biological samples.

Abstract:A derivative of fluorescein was designed, synthesized, and characterized by FT-IR, 1 H, 13 C NMR, mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations. When applied to the set of solutions containing different cations, it has shown a selective colorimetric and fluorescence response for Cu 2+ . A visible color change from colorless to purple and from non-fluorescent to red fluorescence was observed. A linear relationship between Cu 2+ concentration and absorbance or fluorescence intensity was demonstrated with low detection limits (0.64 and 0.24 μM, respectively) in the acetonitrile/water mixture. Test strips are made by impregnating filter paper with acetonitrile chemosensor 1 solution and used to detect Cu 2+ in water. The strips noticeably change their color from colorless to purple.

Abstract:Herein, we have reported a facile one-pot strategy to synthesize fluorescent Cu nanclusters (Cu NCs) by using ʟ-histidine as stabilizer, and ascorbic acid as reducing agent. Cu NCs are stable, water-dispersible, and emit bright cyan emission with a quantum yield 26.08%. The Cu NCs can be employed as colorimetric and fluorimetric dual-mode detector, exhibiting excellent selectivity and sensitivity for detecting 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) specifically. Notably, Cu NCs were a sensitive sensor, which had speciality to detect DNP in range of linearity from 0.01 to 0.15 mM with a discernable limit as low as 3.96 μM. The mechanism of efficiently selective detection of DNP by Cu NCs was analyzed by UV absorption, fluorescence decay spectrum, and the performance of 'turn off' towards DNP was determined as the inner filter effect and static quenching effect. Further, the environmental tolerance of the Cu NCs probe was estimated by using the different natural water samples, demonstrating its great promise in the field of DNP monitoring and water sample analysis.

Termination and side-reactions of polystyryllithium with beta-bromostyrene.

Abstract:Low molecular weight polystyryllithium was synthesised and terminated with a two-fold molar excess of beta-bromostyrene to produce an end-functionalised polymer. 1,3-Diphenylallyl-terminated polystyrene and other reaction products were analysed by FT-Raman spectroscopy. By comparison with model compounds, it can be deduced that beta-bromostyrene with a predominantly trans configuration gave rise to primarily cis conformational unsaturation at the polystyrene chain-end. It was also demonstrated that a polystyrene 'dimer' and 1,4-diphenylbutadiene were produced via side-reactions which are considered to result from metal-halogen exchange in the reagents.

Abstract:Two naphthalimide-based turn-on chemosensors were designed and synthesized. These sensors exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for Cu2+ over other cations. In addition, two different emission channels emerged in a diaminomaleonitrile derivative when the sensor was exposed to different concentration of copper cation in acetonitrile solution. The recognition process in the first channel involves the blocking of the photo-induced electron transfer when imine and amine groups coordinated to the first copper ion, whereas electron-withdrawing ability of the imine group might be enhanced via nitrile group binding with the second copper ion. Abstract:The number of "turn-on" fluorescent probes for Cu 2+ is relatively limited, and interference from other metal cations presents a significant challenge for these sensors. In this study, we synthesized and characterized a rhodamine B-based sensor, designated as RBHP, using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzoyl-5-pyrazolone (PMBP) and rhodamine B hydrazide. Selectivity, sensitivity, solvent effects, water content, and pH of RBHP in relation to Cu2+ were conducted. RBHP exhibited an exceptionally low fluorescence background signal in acetonitrile and demonstrated a "turn-on" fluorescent response to Cu2+. The PMBP-based acylhydrazone moiety and acetonitrile as the detection solvent are crucial for the selective detection. RBHP shows potential as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for Cu 2+ .

Abstract:A fluorescent chemosensor for fast detection of Cu 2+ ion has been established based on a novel pyridine-appended half-salamo-based compound. The chemosensor PHS is easy to synthesize, eco-friendly and cost effective. It demonstrates an excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ ion in the mixed DMF : H 2 O (9 : 1, V / V, pH = 7.2) solution by change in fluorescence intensity. Calculated through the Origin Program, relevant experimental results were obtained, such as the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ) and the association constant ( K a ). Compared with other reported probes, this probe showed a lower detection limit and provided a relatively simple and effective method for the detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, plausible mechanism for the interaction of the probe PHS with Cu 2+ was proposed according to the fluorescence titration experiments, Job's plot, and DFT calculations.

Abstract:Simple PET chemosensors based on anthracene show a selective turn-on fluorescence sensing for Cu2+. The flexible receptor is favorable for turn-on sensing due to chelation enhanced fluorescence. Interestingly, the turn-on fluorescence sensing for Cu2+ is hardly disturbed by the competitive cations and other highly prevalent species in biological and environmental systems, implying a potential in the biological and environmental applications.

Abstract:Fluorescence-based visual analysis has attracted considerable attention in on-site, detection owing to their distinct color gradient changes, easy operation and high sensitivity. In this work, we construct an exceptionally simple dual-emission ratio fluorescence sensor through the synergy of hydroxytyrosol (HYT), naphthoresorcin (NR) and ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), namely HYT – NR – QD, for the fluorescent and visual detection of Cu 2+ . The design of ratiometric nanosensor is based on our new finding that Cu 2+ can catalyze the reaction between HYT and NR to produce a cyan-emitting fluorophore (emission: 480 nm), and the copper species existed in the form of Cu + and Cu 2+ in reaction system. After adding QDs (emission: 605 nm), the free Cu + , Cu 2+ and the resulting fluorophore in this system caused a great reduction in the FL intensity of QDs, due to the rapid cation exchange reaction between QDs and Cu 2+ /Cu + as well as the inner filter effect between QDs and the resulting fluorophore. Overall, Cu 2+ induced emission intensity changes at 480 and 605 nm leads to a distinct color change from red to cyan. A ratiometric fluorescence Cu 2+ sensor with a lowest concentration of 3.42 nM was developed. Furthermore, the concentration of Cu 2+ can be conveniently reflected with a smartphone application by identifying the RGB value. Moreover, the method proposed by us can be explored for Cu 2+ determination in environmental water samples with a satisfying result, providing a novel, simple-operating and on-site detection of Cu 2+ in water samples.

Abstract:A new fluorescent chemosensor (1a), derived from anthracene, was designed and synthesized. It has been found that 1a could be used to detect Zn2+ ratiometricly in a HEPES buffered methanol/water (9/1, v/v) solution with a large hypsochromic shift from 515 to 433nm, while it could also be applied to sense Cu2+ with the phenomenon of fluorescence quenching of 1a completely. Moreover, adding other univalent or divalent metal ions such as Na+, K+, Li+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Cr3+ or Hg2+ ions into the solution of 1a did not cause any distinct change to the emission spectra of 1a.
