Abstract:Near infrared spectroscopy is a new on-line analysis technology,which is fit for the detection of organic substance,such as volatile matter of coal.In this paper,139 coal samples were chosen to acquire diffuse reflectance near-infrared spectra.Then the spectra were correlated to volatile matter of coal with partial least squares.At the same time,different spectral band selecting and pre-treatment methods were used to optimize regression model.At last,the regression model was built for fat coal,and the model result was significantly improved.It shows that regression model of homogeneous set can improve the prediction ability.
Coal Proximate Analysis Based on Synergistic Use of LIBS and NIRS

Abstract:Rapid and accurate analysis of the coal properties is essential for its clean and efficient utilization. However, the complexity of the physical-chemical characteristics of coal complicates accurate quantification of its properties using rapid spectroscopic technologies. Herein, a synergistic method is proposed to achieve optimum results for coal proximate analysis using spectra obtained via laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). Firstly, the ash content was analyzed by LIBS, and the moisture content was analyzed by NIRS. The calorific value and volatile content were then analyzed using the fusion data obtained from LIBS and NIRS, combined with the ash and moisture results. Finally, the fixed carbon content was calculated by subtracting the mass percentage fractions of ash, moisture, and volatile matter from 100%. The results indicated that the proposed method achieved good quantitative performance for coal proximate analysis. The root mean square errors of prediction for ash, moisture, calorific value, volatile matter, and fixed carbon were 0.743%, 0.304%, 0.187 MJ/kg, 0.662% and 0.972%, respectively. Thus, we believe that the proposed method based on the synergy of LIBS and NIRS opens avenues for efficient prospective analysis of coal properties.

Abstract:— The relationship between several structural parameters and vitrinite reflectance (ranged from 0.72 to 2.14) of coal samples was analyzed with infrared and Raman spectrum, consequently important information of functional groups and molecular structures of samples were obtained. It is indicated in the results that the value of FC increases with the increasing of R 0 , while the value of f a increases with the increasing of R 0 in three independent ranges but decreases sharply at the junctions between regions. Besides, the overall trend of DOC is increasing, while the value of A (CH 2 )/ A (CH 3 ) decreases before the point of R 0 = 2.0 and then increases after this value. The value of “ C ” decreases and the rate of decreasing is gradually decreased. All above variations are attributed to the defunctionalization of oxygen-containing functional groups during coalification. Meanwhile, the difference between peak position of D and G increases with the increasing of R 0 while the value of A D1 / A G decreases, which is due to the decline in heterocycle compounds and disorder carbon and the increasing size of microcrystallite structure namely the effect of graphitization.

Abstract:In this study, data fusion of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the total organic carbon content (TOC) of shale samples in Ordos Basin. The powder samples are pressed into pellets for LIBS and Raman analysis. Partial least squares calibration method was used for quantitative analysis. By comparing the quantitative results of the two techniques and the quantitative results of different spectral fusion strategies, it is found that the fusion strategy of LIBS and Raman spectral data can improve the prediction ability of the model. The model based on PLS latent variable fusion strategy has better fitting effect, its coefficient of determination (R2) for the calibration sets is 0.9915, the coefficient of determination for the prediction sets is 0.9574 and the root mean square error of the prediction set is 0.5580 wt%. The model has better generalization ability, and the root-mean-square-error-of-cross-validation (RMSECV) of the model is 0.5252 wt%. This study shows that data fusion of LIBS and Raman spectra can achieve rapid analysis of total organic carbon content in shale samples, and may be beneficial to carbon storage research in depleted gas shale.

Abstract:The fusion of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and visible near infrared spectroscopy (visNIR) has been widely used in geological exploration. The outer product analysis (OPA) has a good effect in the fusion. The dimension of the spectral matrix obtained by OPA is large, and the Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) cannot cover the whole spectrum. As a result, the selected variables by the method are inconsistent each time. In this paper, a new feature variable screening method is proposed, which uses the Least Angle Regression (LAR) to select the high dimensional spectral matrix first, and then uses CARS to complete the secondary selection of the spectral matrix, forming the LAR-CARS algorithm. The purpose is to make the sampling method cover all the spectral data. XRF and visNIR tests were carried out on three cores in two boreholes, and a cross-validation set, validation set and a test set were established by combining the results of wavelength dispersion X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and ITRAX Core scanner in the laboratory. The quantitative model was established with the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and LAR-CARS was compared to these other algorithms (LAR, Successive Projections Algorithm, Monte Carlo uninformative variables elimination and CARS). The results showed that the RMSEP values of the models established by the LAR-CARS for six rock-forming elements (Si, Al, K, Ca, Fe, Ti) were relatively small, and the RPD ranges from 1.424 to 2.514. All these results show that the high-dimensional matrix formed by XRF and visNIR integration combined with LAR-CARS can be used for quantitative analysis of rock forming elements in in-situ coal seam cores, and the analysis results can be used as the basis for judging lithology. The research will provide necessary technical support for digital mine construction.

Abstract:In-depth understanding of coal molecular structures is crucial to the clean and efficient coal conversion, as they are the dominant factors determining the reactivity and reaction behaviors of coals in thermal conversions such as combustion, pyrolysis, gasification and liquefaction. However, the molecular structures of coals are still far from clear due to the intrinsic complexity and heterogeneity of coals. This work probes the molecular structures of eight coals of various metamorphic grades with combined spectral techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), solid state 13C NMR and FTIR spectra. The structural parameters were correlated with the coalification indicator Ro to investigate the structural evolutions during coal metamorphism. Consistent results concerning the structural evolution during coalification were obtained with different techniques. From the parameters of proximate and ultimate analysis, the increasing aromaticity and decreasing aliphatic fractions with rising coalification degree are observed. XRD patterns show the ubiquitous presence of amorphous carbon, the gradually condensing aromatic layers, and the size-growing but graphitizing crystallites during coalification. 13C NMR spectra reveal different types of carbons presented, the increasing aromatic and decreasing aliphatic components, the growing size and weight but reducing number of side-chains of the aromatic clusters. FTIR spectra indicate shortening and reducing of aliphatic chains, as well as enhancing aromaticity with the deepening metamorphism. These findings shed light on the structure features of coals and are potentially useful to the clean and efficient coal utilization.

Abstract:Accurate and timely prediction of the coal calorific value holds immense significance in ensuring efficient and effective utilization of energy resources. In this manuscript, a novel analyzer for the rapid and precise determination of coal calorific value is developed by integrating near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). Previous studies primarily rely on traditional linear regression methods to establish the mapping between NIRS-XRF fusion spectroscopy and the calorific value of coal, given the predominance of a linear relationship between the two. However traditional linear regression analysis methods fail to predict accurate calorific value of coal, because of non-linear system biases and other non-linear issues exist in real applications. Due to the limited open-source dataset and the difficulties of labeled data collection, few of approaches utilize the non-linear neural networks to predict the calorific value of coal due to the risk of over-fitting. Improving the performance with such a small training set is crucial for the adjustment of the NIRS-XRF analyzer system. In this manuscript, we propose a novel approach named PLS-Assisted Neural Fine-Tuning, which consists of two stages: a PLS pre-training stage and a fine-tuning stage. The PLS pre-training stage employs data augmentation to generate simulated inputs with pseudo label obtained by PLS. These synthesis samples are used to transfer the linear priori into neural networks from PLS for eliminating the risk of over-fitting issue. The proposed PLS-Assisted Neural Fine-Tuning method combines the linear priori and the advantages of neural network to outperform conventional machine learning methods and the vanilla neural networks. \rewrite{We perform comprehensive experiments to validate effectiveness of PLS-Assisted Neural Fine-Tuning method. Notably, the proposed PLS-Assisted Neural Fine-Tuning approach improves the performance without bells and whistles in data deficient scenes, and especially brings significant improvements within 50 training samples. Furthermore, compared to the widely used PLS algorithm, our algorithm demonstrates superior robustness across data with varying crushing particle sizes.

Abstract:To date, questions remain as to how to differentiate between coal- and interbedded shale-sourced oils in coal measures. Based on the hypothesis that δ13C value of sedimentary organic matter is controlled by the depositional environment and productivities of biota grown in such depositional setting, this note examines compound specific carbon isotopic profiles from coal and interbedded shale extracts using the gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spec-trometry technique (GC/IRMS). The results show that compound specific carbon isotope values from coal extracts are enriched in 13C relative to that of interbedded shale extracts, and provide useful information in characterizing coal- and interbedded shale-sourced oils in coal measures. An example for its successful application from the Turpan Basin, Northwestern China is presented.

Abstract:Fast or online coal property analysis would greatly improve coal pricing reliability and combustion optimization for power generation, especially in China. A non-linearized multivariate dominant factor based partial least square (PLS) model was applied to analyze coal properties through laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The dominant factor explicitly modeled the direct correlation between coal property and spectral line intensities, whereas residual errors were corrected by PLS method with full spectral information. The results demonstrated an overall improvement over conventional PLS method for ash content, volatile content, and calorific value measurement. For example, the root mean square error of prediction of calorific value was decreased from 1.63 MJ kg(-1) to 1.33 MJ kg(-1); and the average relative error of all samples was reduced from 3.55% to 2.71%. Although current LIBS application results for coal proximate analysis have not met the national standard, LIBS is shown to be fully capable of providing useful information for coal combustion optimization and reliable references for coal pricing, showing LIBS has great potential for coal property analysis for the power generation industry.

Abstract:Geographical origin, an important indicator of the chemical composition and quality grading, is one essential factor that should be taken into account in evaluating coal quality. However, traditional coal origin identification methods based on chemistry experiments are not only time consuming and labour intensive, but also costly. Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is an effective and efficient way to measure the chemical compositions of samples and has demonstrated excellent performance in various fields of quantitative and qualitative research. In this study, we employ NIR spectroscopy to identify coal origin. Considering the fact that the NIR spectra of coal samples always contain a large amount of redundant information and the number of samples is small, the broad learning algorithm is utilized here as the modelling system to classify the coal geographical origin. In addition, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is introduced to improve the structure of the Broad Learning (BL) model. We compare the improved model with the other five multivariate classification methods on a dataset with 243 coal samples collected from five countries. The experimental results indicate that the improved BL model can achieve the highest overall accuracy of 97.05%. The results obtained in this study suggest that the NIR technique combined with machine learning methods has significant potential for further development of coal geographical origin identification systems.

Abstract:The organic and mineral components in two coals and resulting high-temperature ashes with high silicon content were characterized by second-derivative infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The infrared spectra of raw coals show weak organic functional groups bands but strong kaolinite bands because of the relatively high silicates content. In contrast, the Raman spectra of raw coals show strong disordered carbon bands but no mineral bands since Raman spectroscopy is highly sensitive to carbonaceous phases. The overlapping bands of mineral components (e.g., calcite, feldspar, and muscovite) were successfully resolved by the method of second-derivative infrared spectroscopy. The results of infrared spectra indicate the presence of metakaolinite in coal ashes, suggesting the thermal transformation of kaolinite during ashing. Intense quartz bands were shown in both infrared and Raman spectra of coal ashes. In addition, Raman spectra of coal ashes show a very strong characteristic band of anatase (149 cm–1), although the titanium oxides content is very low. Combined use of second-derivative infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy provides valuable insight into the analyses of mineralogical composition. The XRD results generally agree with those of FTIR and Raman spectroscopic analyses.

Abstract:Proximate analysis of coal indicates the moisture, ash, volatile content, and calorific value, which has been widely utilized as the basis for coal characterization. It involves heating the coal under various conditions until a constant weight is obtained. Although it is a relatively simple process that does not require expensive analytical equipment, determining these characteristics is time-consuming. An alternative way for proximate analysis is spectral analysis in combination with various machine learning methods. However, most previous works analyze individual characteristics and fail to explore the relationship among them. In this study, we propose a method for proximate analysis based on near-infrared spectroscopy and a multi-output attention Unet (MOA-Unet), which can predict multiple characteristics simultaneously. First, an attention-based Unet is designed as the shared feature extraction sub-network, including an encoder, a decoder, convolutional block attention modules and multi-scale feature fusion modules, which can improve the representation power of the U-shape network through aggregating features of shallower layers and concatenating features of deeper layers. Second, four individual sub-networks with fully connected layers, designed for four outputs, are utilized for regressing those four characteristics. We employ the gradient normalization algorithm to alleviate the gradient magnitude masking effect caused by training imbalance among different task. The proposed MOA-Unet is compared with classical chemometric methods on 670 coal samples from on-site test, including support vector regression, partial least squares regression, random forest, extreme gradient boosting and a few deep learning methods. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance with correlation coefficients of 0.9015, 0.9538, 0.8986, and 0.8884, corresponding to moisture, ash, volatile content, and calorific value, respectively.

Abstract:Thirty-two coal (lignite-bituminous in rank) and carbonaceous shale samples, ranging from immature to overmature, were collected from the various coal-bearing basins (Saurashtra Basin, Bikaner Nagaur Basin, Damodar Basin, Mahanadi Basin, and Foreland Basin) in India and characterized petrographically (vitrinite reflectance and maceral composition), geochemically (total organic carbon and total sulfur) and chemically (Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, FTIR). This paper explores utilization of FTIR study on bulk non-demineralized carbonaceous shale and coal to examine the interference between mineral and organic matter visible on FTIR spectra and application of such techniques to assess organic matter chemistry based on FTIR signal. Mineral matter is considerably affecting the organic matter FTIR signal in the region between 1700–1350 and 900–700 cm −1 , while the 3100–2800 cm −1 region is unaffected. The general trends of organic matter evolution with thermal maturity, i.e. a decrease of aliphatic and oxygen-bearing groups and increase in aromatic signal, are visible in bulk non-demineralized samples; however, the interpretation of the signal is problematic due to the dilution-related signal weakening and region-specific overlapping. The quality of the FTIR signal is lower than the signal from demineralized kerogens or targeted specific maceral grains via combination of FTIR with microscopy. The spectra can still be useful for more qualitative aspects of FTIR, like assessment of organic functional groups, study of coal impurities, or as a complementary method in conjunction with other analytical techniques such as X-ray for mineral matter characterization.

Abstract:The fluorescence characteristics of coal and its macerals have always been an important subject. Due to the correlation between the fluorescence and coking properties of coal macerals and other technological properties of coal, the fluorescence of coal macerals has attracted more and more interest. In order to better apply the fluorescence properties of coal to the production of coal chemical industry, the relative fluorescence intensity of multiple macerals (RFMI) obtained by a modified fluorescence alteration of multiple macerals (FAMM) technique was used in evaluation of coking coal in this paper. In the modified FAMM technique, full frame transfer charge coupled device (FFT-CCD) array detector and the excitation wavelength of 360 nm were used. Six kinds of coking coal were tested by the modified FAMM technique. The results indicated that the RFMI has a linear correlation with vitrinite reflectance. RFMI change is more sensitive to the caking properties than vitrinite reflectance and can well represent the caking index of coal samples, which will be a powerful supplement to the existing coal evaluation standards.

Abstract:Coal plays an indispensable role in the world's energy structure. Coal converts chemical energy into energy such as electricity, heat, and internal energy through combustion. To realize the energy conversion of coal more efficiently, coal needs to be identified during the stages of mining, combustion, and pyrolysis. On this basis, different categories of coal are used according to industrial needs, or different pyrolysis processes are selected according to the category of coal. This paper proposes an approach combining deep learning with reflection spectroscopy for rapid coal identification in mining, combustion, and pyrolysis scenarios. First, spectral data of different coal samples were collected in the field and these spectral data were preprocessed. Then, an identification model combining a multiscale convolutional neural network (CNN) and an extreme learning machine (ELM), named RS_PSOTELM, is proposed. The effective features in the spectral data are extracted by the CNN, and the feature classification is realized utilizing the ELM. To enhance the identification performance of the model, we utilize a particle swarm optimization algorithm to optimize the parameters of the ELM. Experimental results show that RS_PSOTELM achieves 98.3% accuracy on the coal identification task and is able to identify coal quickly and accurately, providing a low-cost, efficient, and reliable approach for coal identification during the mining and application phases, as well as paving the way for efficient combustion and pyrolysis of coal.

Abstract:Ash content, as a crucial indicator of coal quality, its rapid and accurate determination is pivotal to improve the energy utilization of coal and reduce environmental pollution. Traditional spectroscopic methods face significant challenges in acquiring accurate information from coal samples due to the notorious matrix effects arising from their complex composition, vast molecular structure, and diverse coal types. In this study, the feasibility of total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) combined with partial least squares (PLS) for the determination of coal ash was firstly investigated based on the TXRF being unaffected by matrix effects. Firstly, coal samples were prepared as suspensions, and the effects of sample particle size and different dispersants on the results of TXRF analyses were evaluated. The accuracy and applicability of the chosen sample preparation strategies were further validated using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and two certified reference materials (CRMs). Subsequently, based on the analysis of 19 coal samples, the impact of three different predictive variables on the performance of the PLS model was investigated: (a) TXRF full spectrum normalized by the net intensity of the internal standard; (b) net intensity of characteristic peaks for 12 elements (Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Cr, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Sr) normalized by the net intensity of the internal standard; (c) concentrations of the aforementioned 12 elements. The results demonstrate that the PLS model constructed usingthe TXRF full spectrum normalized by the net intensity of the internal standard exhibits the best predictive capabilities, with the determination coefficient of calibration set (R 2 ) and mean square error (MSE) of the prediction set reaching 0.9736 and 0.99 %, respectively. Moreover, the measurement accuracy of this model was six times greater than that obtained with traditional X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Presented analytical results display the possibilities of combining TXRF with PLS for coal quality evaluation.

Molecular structure characterization of middle-high rank coal via XRD, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy: Implications for coalification

Abstract:In recent years, the major coal producing areas in China have entered the period of deep mining, with coal rank changing from low-rank coal (LRC) to middle-high rank coal (MHRC). Even though material properties of MHRC, such as pore size and shape, have attracted increasing attentions, its molecular structures still remains unclear. This study probes molecular structural properties of five MHRC samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Test results show that with the deepening of coalification, the aromatic rings of MHRC increase gradually. The aliphatic side chains between the aromatic rings continuously fall off. The ordered structure of coal continues to enhance, resulting in an increase in the degree of graphitization of coal. The average lateral sizes (La), stacking heights (Lc) and interlayer spacing (d002) of the crystallite structures of MHRC samples derived from the XRD range from 20.65 to 31.68, 10.62 to 19.21 and 3.42 to 3.66 Å, respectively. The La values derived from the Raman spectra using the classical linear relationship between 1/La and the ID1/IG band ratio are higher (36.36–59.91 Å) than the values obtained from XRD. The FTIR spectra reveals that MHRC samples contain aliphatic functional groups such as CH2 and CH3, aromatic functional groups such as CC and aromatic ring CH, and oxygen-containing functional groups such as OH, CO and CO. The aromaticity (fa ) of the coal samples determined by FTIR ranges from 0.66 to 0.98, and compared with the fa valued from XRD (0.63 to 0.93), which shows that the MHRC contains abundant of aliphatic components. On the basis of these results, the structural parameters obtained by different spectral techniques are also used to comparatively study the effects of coalification on the molecular structure of coals. The structural parameters of coal derived by these methods reflect the coalification jumps at R o = 0.5, 0.7–0.9, 1.2, 2.6, 3.3, 3.5–4.0 and 4.2–4.8%. Among them, the jump at R o = 4.2–4.8% is unreported in previous studies and should be further studied in subsequent research. The application range of structure parameters used to evaluate the coal rank such as d002, La (XRD), fa and G-D1 should be considered because of coalification jumps. The parameters such as 'C', ID1/IG and La (Raman) are better choices for evaluating coal rank for their better correlation with R o. It is worth pointing out that these parameters have implications for coalification and should be concerned in further study.

Abstract:The macromolecular strucutures of the three major macerals, vitrinite, exinite and fusinite, separated from a unique Pingshuo bituminous coal are probed and characterized using advanced analytical techniques including 13C-NMR, XPS, FTIR and XRD. Structural parameters of the individual macerals, for instance, aromaticity, carbon and hydrogen distribution, existing form of heteroatoms and functional groups are measured and investigated. The microcrystallite parameters are also calculated from XRD analysis. The results indicate that the differences in macromolecular structure of the three macerals are obvious and can be distinguished from each other.

Abstract:Abstract Although laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), as a fast on-line analysis technology, has great potential and competitiveness in the analysis of chemical composition and proximate analysis results of coal in thermal power plants, the measurement repeatability of LIBS needs to be further improved due to the difficulty in controlling the stability of the generated plasmas at present. In this paper, we propose a novel x-ray fluorescence (XRF) assisted LIBS method for high repeatability analysis of coal quality, which not only inherits the ability of LIBS to directly analyze organic elements such as C and H in coal, but also uses XRF to make up for the lack of stability of LIBS in determining other inorganic ash-forming elements. With the combination of elemental lines in LIBS and XRF spectra, the principal component analysis and the partial least squares are used to establish the prediction model and perform multi-elemental and proximate analysis of coal. Quantitative analysis results show that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of C is 0.15%, the RSDs of other elements are less than 4%, and the standard deviations of calorific value, ash content, sulfur content and volatile matter are 0.11 MJ kg −1 , 0.17%, 0.79% and 0.41% respectively, indicating that the method has good repeatability in determination of coal quality. This work is helpful to accelerate the development of LIBS in the field of rapid measurement of coal entering the power plant and on-line monitoring of coal entering the furnace.
