Abstract:The inner portion of the reaction device of the bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) system was independently designed to construct dual-chamber bio-electro-Fenton systems to simultaneously degrade tetracycline (TC) and levofloxacin (LEV) in both anode and cathode chambers. The electro-Fenton reaction that degrades LEV wastewater in the cathode is propelled by bioelectric energy generated on-site. With graphite felt as the cathode and anode of the motional bio-electro-Fenton system, an external resistance of 10 Ω, pH of 3 in cathode, a Na 2 SO 4 concentration of 0.07 mol/L, an Fe 2+ concentration of 0.1 mmol/L and an aeration rate of 3 * 4.5 L/min, the removal rates of TC, COD, TOC, and NH 4 + -N within 72 h were 59.6 %, 83.7 %, 74.15 % and 80.1 % in the anode. And the LEV elimination rate was 75.50 % and the mineralisation rate was 68.39 % for 20 mg/L in the cathode within 24 h. The highest power density, current density, and voltage of the motional bio-electro-Fenton system could reach 7.12 W/m 3 , 636.94 mA/m 3 , and around 900 mV, respectively, and the maximum voltage could be maintained for over 36 h. A bioelectrochemical system (BES) is an environmentally friendly technique. In BESs, microbes on the anode play central roles in electricity generation and pollutant degradation. Here, we utilized fresh and aged biochar (marked by FB and AB) as amendments to assess the spatial-temporal hydrocarbon removal, bacterial community shift and functional gene changes in the anode and cathode vicinity. After 78 days, an accumulated charge of 750 C for FB was gained, which was 12% and 98% higher than that of AB and the no-biochar control (CK), respectively. Moreover, the removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons was enhanced in the order of CK (17–26%) < AB (22–28%) < FB (24–29%) in the cathodic area, while in the anodic region, the removal was enhanced in the order CK (22–31%) < FB (24–30%) 92% of the total bacterial community, with a declining tendency over time. The cathode vicinity favoured Proteobacteria growth, whereas the anode region favoured Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes. Functional genes emphasized petroleum hydrocarbons as the carbon source and relationships with nitrogen, sulfur and iron compounds in soil. This study validated the aptitudes and application effects of fresh and aged biochar in BESs. The study describes cultivation of Dunaliella salina at the saline cathode in a Photosynthetic Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC). The alga was isolated from Salt Lake Sambhar, Rajasthan, India, and identified using 18S rDNA sequencing analysis. The alga growth in PMFC was tested at 0.5 M to 1.5 M sodium chloride. The highest power and current density were obtained at 0.5 M NaCl with the values of 213.38 mW m −2 and 1020.5 mA m −2 , respectively. The specific growth rate of algae was 0.4 day −1 with 566 mg/L lipids and 348.9 ± 25.6 μg/mL of glycerol content at 0.5 M PMFC. The PMFC operating at 1.0 M NaCl led to high β-carotene production (24.42 ± 1.8 μg/100 mg). The salinity in natural water resources makes it difficult to apply them in bioprocesses. This study establishes the utility of D. salina in saline water-based PMFC for the generation of power and high-value Dunaliella biomass. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are promising in self-sustaining energy recovery of wastewater. Cathode catalysts are crucial to enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process in BESs. In this study, a dual regulation strategy including solvent mediation and zinc fencing was proposed for regulation of catalyst spatial structure and active sites. The particle size of catalysts derived from bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) was tuned over a wide range via solvent mediation while the dispersion of cobalt active sites was achieved via zinc fencing.
