Abstract:Indole is commonly reported as a product from hydrothermal processing of algal biomass. The reactions of indole in supercritical water were investigated between 550 and 700°C in quartz, mini-batch reactors. The indole disappearance rate followed first-order kinetics, and the activation energy was 155±10kJ/mol. Methane and hydrogen were the most abundant gaseous products under most of the conditions tested, whereas benzene was the most abundant liquid-phase product. Hydrogen and carbon gasification efficiencies (HGE and CGE) exhibited values up to 79% and 20%, respectively. The influence of water density on the yields of H2, CH4, and C2H6 was negligible at densities above 0.081g/ml, but the CO2 yield increased with water density whereas the CO yield decreased. The yield of CH4 increased significantly as the initial indole concentration increased. The collective results, which showed how the yields of numerous intermediate reaction products responded to changes in the process variables, permitted advancement of a potential reaction network.

Abstract:Nitrogen is an important element related to coal conversion process due to its considerable impact on the environment. In this study, indole, a nitrogen-containing compound of coal, was utilized to explore nitrogen transformation during supercritical water gasification. Experiments were conducted with K2CO3 as catalyst under temperature conditions from 650 degrees C to 750 degrees C, pressure of 25 MPa, and residence time from 1 min to 30 min with feed-stock concentration of 2 wt%; products and nitrogen transformation characteristics were then investigated in detail. First, we found that carbon gasification efficiency of 95.89% was obtained under conditions of 750 degrees C, 25 MPa for 30 min, and that gaseous products mainly contained H-2, CO, CO2 and CH4. Nitrogen-containing products were not detected in gaseous products. Second, the main liquid intermediate organic products were phenol, aniline, and other nitrogen-containing compounds, and the liquid inorganic product was ammonia. Then a reaction pathway of indole gasification in supercritical water was proposed. The quantitative kinetic model for describing the gaseous products and nitrogen transformation mechanisms of indole was developed. Abstract:Supercritical water partial oxidation (SCWPO) is a clean and efficient organic waste resource utilisation method. Indole is an essential intermediate in the thermochemical conversion process of nitrogenous organic waste, and its conversion is often regarded as the rate-limiting step in these processes. However, the detailed reaction mechanism of the SCWPO process of indole is still unclear. This paper deeply analysed the gasification characteristics and the distribution of nitrogen in products during this process by an autoclave reactor. The results revealed that lengthening the reaction time, increasing the temperature, and lowering the feed concentration all promoted the formation of gaseous products. The indole was almost completely converted when the temperature, the reaction time, the feedstock concentrate, and the oxidant equivalent ratio were 750 ?, 30 min, 4 wt%, and 0.5, respectively. The excessive increase in the oxidant equivalent ratio could improve the carbon gasification efficiency and convert more organic nitrogen to N2 while consuming a significant amount of H2. Notably, no NOx was detected in the gaseous product, and the thermodynamic equilibrium data supported this conclusion. Finally, an SCWPO mechanism of indole was proposed based on the detailed analysis of experimental liquid intermediate products.

Abstract:A quantitative kinetics model for describing gas yields of supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of coal was established in this paper.The kinetics model contained pyrolysis,liquefaction,steam reforming,methanation and water-gas shift reaction occurred in supercritical water gasification including both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions.Then,the kinetics model was applied in our previous work to describe the whole process of SCWG of coal in the fluidized bed reactor.Based on the integrated model,the variations of typical reaction rates and reaction components under wide reactor temperature range were numerical investigated,and the characters of chemical fields in the reactor were revealed.The model and numerical results may provide valuable information for better reactor design,scaling up and operation.

Abstract:Indole is one of refractory intermediate products in hydrothermal conversion of biomass, and its decomposition significantly restricts the improvement of gasification efficiency and hydrogen production in biomass supercritical water gasification (SCWG). In order to improve gasification efficiency of indole and moderate reaction conditions for hydrogen production in biomass SCWG, indole (0.25 mol/L) was gasified in supercritical water at 540-600 degrees C, 25 MPa, 0-0.8 of oxidation coefficients (OC) in min-batch reactors. Corresponding pathways and kinetics of partial oxidation of indole in supercritical water for hydrogen production were explored. The results showed that the addition of oxidant (hydrogen peroxide) promoted steam reform and decomposition, especially ring-opening reactions, so increasing the gasification efficiency of indole and the yields of H2 and CO2 in gaseous products. The maximum hydrogen gasification efficiency could reach up to 60.3% at OC = 0.6, which was about twice that of non-oxidant. Moreover, 29 groups of reaction rate constants, activation energies and Arrhenius constants were obtained in the established kinetic model.

Abstract:An accurate kinetic model, including the reaction pathway and reaction heat, is crucial to reactor scale-up and process optimization for the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of coal. However, the reported kinetic models seldom satisfy the mass and energy conservation law due to the proposed inappropriate reaction pathway and difficult determination of reaction heat in supercritical water (SCW). This work focuses on determining the reaction heat and establishing a kinetic model based on mass and energy conservation law. A reaction pathway combined with reaction heat determination by a lumped method was proposed to establish a kinetic model and to quantify the reaction heat of each reaction in the coal gasification process. The steam reforming reaction I and II in the model have the highest activation energy, 59.629 +/- 10.281 kJ/mol and 63.249 +/- 3.937 kJ/mol, respectively. Reaction heats of the reaction between volatile and SCW and the steam reforming reactions exceed + 600 kJ/mol. Moreover, due to the combined influence of endothermic and exothermic reactions, the entire gasification process shift from endothermic to exothermic as the gasification proceeds. This work provides a more accurate mathematical model for the SCW reactor.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology for oil-containing wastewater treatment. This paper aims to establish a reaction kinetic model to provide better guidance for optimal industrial reactor design. The model is developed based on the experimental results obtained from K2CO3-catalyzed SCWG of diesel (the model compound of oil containment in wastewater) at various conditions of 500–650 °C and 15.23–64.45 s. Then the model validation by using the experimental data from other conditions. The validation results showed that the kinetic model can predict the gas concentration with an acceptable deviation. Afterward, the indicators of carbon gasification efficiency and gas yield versus residence time are predicted. The results show that the required residence time for the complete gasification is varied from 214.2 to 2150.8 s when the temperature changes from 500 to 650 °C. Moreover, the reaction rate analysis result indicates that the two reactions contributed most to the hydrogen production are the forward water-gas shift and the reverse CO methanation reaction. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis result reveals that the hydrolysis reaction of diesel has a significant influence at the initial stage, while the CO and CO2 methane reactions play a vital role at the late stage for gas production.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) technology is considered as a potential technology to realize resource utilization of biomass waste. Both experimental and modeling researches are performed to guide the development and scale-up of this technology. Among these researches, dynamic study of the reactor is an important aspect. However, related published literature is relatively limited. In this study, a one-dimensional dynamic model was developed, and a kinetic model of soybean stem containing detailed reaction pathway of biomass was established based on the lumped parameter method. It was calculated through fitting experiment data (obtained at 600, 650, and 700 degrees C three temperatures and pressure of around 25 MPa), after which it was applied to the tubular reactor for further analysis. Sensitivity analysis of the reactor displayed that H2 mole fraction was most sensitive to the inlet temperature, which increased or decreased by around 10 % when the temperature had a +/- 5 % fluctuation. Dynamic simulation results showed that the gasifier responds quickly under a transient change of concentration. Gasification efficiency decreased from 83.8 % to 41.9 % at 500 s, kept constant for 240 s, and then increased to 83.4 % and stabilized at this value. Total response time was 900 s. Molar fraction of CO, CO2 and CH4 increased by 0.8 %, 0.66 %, 3.08 % respectively. While that of H2 decreased by 4.54 % within 660 s. As for fluctuation of flowrate, gasification efficiency increased by 3.4 % when residence time increased from 527 s to 584 s. Mole fraction of H2 and CO2 increased with time, while that of CH4 and CO decreased, and response time was 900 s.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is a primary intermediate in supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) processes. A validated chemical kinetic model for hydrogen oxidation in supercritical H2O/CO2 mixtures was expanded to describe carbon monoxide oxidation and water gas shift reaction in supercritical water (SCW). The model performance was evaluated against experimental data in literature. Data for carbon monoxide oxidation were well reproduced by the model. Underprediction of hydrogen formation was attributed mostly to hydrolysis reactions occurring on the reactor surface. The rate of water gas shift reaction observed experimentally under SCW conditions strongly exceeds that predicted by the model. Analysis indicates that the observed WGS reaction is largely due to catalytic effects on the reactor surface, even though trace impurities of oxygen present in the experiments may also enhance reaction. Pressure corrections on thermodynamic properties and inclusion of HOCHO subset were found to have negligible influence on modeling results. CO + OH = CO2 + H, HO2 + H2O - OH + H2O2 and OH + HO2 - O-2 + H2O were identified as the most important elementary reactions by sensitivity analysis.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of coal is a clean coal utilization technology that has gradually developed in recent years. It has great application prospect because of low pollution, good economy and high energy efficiency. Due to the complexity of coal molecular structure, it is difficult to directly study SCWG mechanism of coal at molecular level. Based on the Wiser molecular structure model of coal, diphenyl ether and diphenylmethane were selected as model compounds to study the bond breaking characteristics and gasification law of characteristic bridge bonds. The effects of catalyst, temperature, concentration and other factors on model compounds gasification were discussed. The results showed that temperature had the most significant influence on gasification effect. The effect order of catalyst on promoting gasification from high to low was: K2CO3 & nbsp;> Na2CO3 > Ca(OH)(2). The increase of catalyst amount and residence time had a certain promotion effect on gasification reaction. Under the same condition, the gasification effect of diphenyl ether was better than that of diphenylmethane. At the same time, the kinetic model of coal-like structure model compound gasification in SCW was established, and the key parameters were solved. The activation energy of diphenyl ether and diphenylmethane was 82.96 kJ/mol and 99.92 kJ/mol, respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a first quantitative kinetic model for supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) of quinazoline that describes the formation and interconversion of intermediates and final products at 673–873 K. The set of 11 reaction pathways for phenol, pyrimidine, naphthalene, NH3, etc, involved in the simplified reaction network proved sufficient for fitting the experimental results satisfactorily. We validated the model prediction ability on CO2 yields at initial quinazoline loading not used in the parameter estimation. Reaction rate analysis and sensitivity analysis indicate that nearly all reactions reach their thermodynamic equilibrium within 300 s. The pyrimidine yielding from quinazoline is the dominant ring-opening pathway and provides a significant contribution to CO2 formation. Low sensitivity of NH3 decomposition rate to concentration confirms its refractory nature in SCWO. Nitrogen content in liquid products decreases whereas that in gaseous phase increases as reaction time prolonged. The nitrogen predicted by the model in gaseous phase combined with the experimental nitrogen in liquid products gives an accurate nitrogen balance of conversion process.

Abstract:The gasification kinetic characteristics of food waste (FW) gasification by supercritical water (SCW) were investigated by examining the SCW gasification (SCWG) of FW in a quartz tube reactor, and the experimental results were investigated by using a series of kinetic models. The experimental results show that the carbon gasification efficiency increases with reaction temperature at the same residence time, and reactivity increases sharply at the early stage of gasification and then decreases with reaction time. The simulation results show that all the classical kinetic models underestimate the experimental results, similar to the models used in previous work on coal gasification by SCW. The underestimation of the models results from the catalytic effect of alkaline earth metals (AAEMs), which can notably increase the active sites of gasification reaction without changing the gasification kinetic mechanism. To solve the above problem, the catalytical effect to describe the kinetic behavior of the SCWG of FW is considered and a semiempirical modified random pore model (MRPM) is developed based on the RPM model. The simulation results of the MRP models are close to experimental findings, indicating that MRP model can be used to predict the entire process of SCWG under different conditions without dividing gasification into different stages of reaction. The MRP model can also be used for the prediction of SCWG of coal, biomass, and organic wastes and is crucial to reactor optimization and scaling up.

Abstract:Hydrogen production by supercritical water gasification of biomass has broad application prospects. The migration and regulation mechanism of nitrogen in supercritical water is one of the key issues in biomass utilization. As a nitrogen-containing model compound of biomass, indole was used to study the mechanism of nitrogen migration during supercritical water gasification from a molecular perspective by using reactive empirical force fields (Reaxff) combined with Density functional theory (DFT) method. The pyrrole ring cracking was the first stage and then most of the nitrogen atoms left the carbon skeleton to form ammonia precursor radicals after being attacked by H or OH free radicals in supercritical water. The overall activation energy of each pyrrole ring opening way was calculated. The dominant way for pyrrole ring opening was analyzed and the competitive relationship among the different ring-opening ways was specified by comparing the activation energies of transition states and relative energies of intermediates. Compared with pyrolysis conditions, supercritical water molecules greatly promoted the separation of nitrogen atoms from the carbon skeleton to form NH3 and inhibited the formation of HCN. The higher temperature could facilitate the indole conversion and the hydrogen generation, but it also increased the possibility of char formation, causing part of the nitrogen to re-enter the organic structure. This study revealed the mechanism from the view of microscopic atoms, and provided theoretical support for the nitrogen regulation in supercritical water gasification of biomass.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification of coal is a newly clean coal technology. In this study, we established a quantitative model for the reaction kinetics of coal gasification in supercritical water. The large number of real intermediates formed during gasification were lumped using volatile and fixed carbon, and mass balance was also ensured in kinetic equation which would facilitate access to a comprehensive model considering flow and heat transfer. The model focused on the formation of the individual gaseous species (H-2, CO2, CH4, CO). Then the model was applied to fit the experimental data and kinetic parameters were estimated. It was found that predicted results of the model were in accordance with experiments. The model predicted that volatile completely 'converted into gas quickly when temperature reached above 650 degrees C, and the reforming reaction of fixed carbon became the control step of gasification. Hydrogen was mainly from volatile decomposition in the initial short stage and water gas shift reaction then contributed to the hydrogen production. Carbon reforming reaction dominated hydrogen generation after about 5 min. Methane generated from the direct decomposition of volatile and the effect of methanation reaction was negligible. Carbon monoxide was generated during the volatile decomposition and it was consumed simultaneously in water gas shift reaction with substantial carbon dioxide produced. As a result, carbon monoxide content accounted for a small percentage and hydrogen and carbon dioxide dominated the gas products of gasification.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is recognized as an efficient technology for biomass conversion, demonstrating substantial potential in the sustainable energy sector. This paper focuses on the H 2 production by SCWG of biomass. The objective is to develop an accurate gasification kinetic model that can facilitate the optimization of industrial reactor designs. A series of SCWG experiments is conducted in a batch reactor system under temperature of 500–600 °C and residence time of 1–20 min. Based on the experimental results, a hybrid-driven model for SCWG reaction is established. Firstly, experimental data is utilized to delineate SCWG reaction mechanistic model and forecast gas yields with an acceptable error margin. Subsequently, a Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network Gradient Boosting Regression Grid Search (WGAN-GBR-GRID) model is applied to acquire knowledge of the predictive errors from the mechanistic model and to develop a hybrid model. The hybrid-driven model significantly enhances the average relative prediction error from 15.56 % to 0.02 % when compared to the mechanistic model. This result underscores the potential of the hybrid model in optimizing SCWG technology and the Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values in feature analysis shows the possible shortcomings of mechanistic model, thereby providing a new perspective for SCWG reaction dynamics modeling.

A Mathematical Model and Numerical Investigation for Glycerol Gasification in Supercritical Water with A Tubular Reactor

Abstract:This paper developed a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of the supercritical water gasification (SCWG) process of glycerol. The detailed flow field, temperature field and chemical species distributions inside the reactor were revealed, and the effects of the operating parameters on the results in the SCWG of glycerol were investigated. The reasons for incomplete gasification were discussed, and relevant possible improvements were proposed. (1) The residence time is not long enough for the complete gasification; therefore, the optimal length of the tubular reactor was obtained under different operating conditions. (2) A side-reaction region was formed near the feeding inlet and methods to reduce the volume of the side-reaction region were investigated. A high preheated water temperature and a 135 degrees feeding angle were proved to obviously avoid side-reaction. A multi-injection feeding method can also suppress the side-reaction, but the carbon gasification efficiency decreased. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification technology is widely applied to convert organic waste into valuable substances as a clean and efficient method. Biomass gasification in SCW is a complex process and complicated chemical reactions like decomposition and poly-condensation take place, thus, reaction mechanism of real biomass needs to be further investigated. In this paper, experimental study on cornstalk gasification in SCW was conducted at the temperature of 500–800 °C, reaction time of 1–15min and feedstock concentration of 1–9%. The effects of various operating parameters on evolution of gas, liquid and solid products were conducted. It was discovered that pore structure and carbon microspheres appeared successively on the surface of solid residue. Mechanism study showed that the biomass was first depolymerized into monomer and its derivatives, then cracked and poly-condensed into a nuclear to generate carbon microspheres as its concentration reached the critical concentration. As the reaction proceeds, reduction reaction, coke combustion and secondary reaction occurred, thus carbon microspheres decreased. The results indicated that higher reaction temperature, longer reaction time and lower feed concentration were conducive to improving reaction performance of biomass. Finally, it was discovered that carbon gasification efficiency reached 99% at the temperature of 700 °C, reaction time of 15 min and biomass concentration of 3%.
Model-based Thermodynamic Analysis of Supercritical Water Gasification of Oil-Containing Wastewater

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is a promising technology for oil-containing wastewater treatment. In this work, a non-stoichiometric two-phase (i.e., supercritical and solid phases) model is established for the thermodynamic analysis of SCWG of oil-containing wastewater. Within the model, the compositions of gaseous and solid products are calculated by minimizing the Gibbs free energy of the whole system. Peng-Robinson equation is employed to help predict the chemical potentials of gases accurately. The introduced model is first validated to fit experimental data well. Afterwards, the model is used to investigate the effects of various operating conditions on product compositions. A high temperature and a low oil concentration promote hydrogen production, instead of methane production. Additionally, it is found whether and how much char is formed greatly depends on the temperature and elemental compositions in the input stream. Moreover, the reaction heat duty and high heating value of gaseous products are analyzed. SCWG process is endothermic with a low oil concentration and can be energetically self-sustainable via adding O2 at an expense of lowering the heating value of gaseous products. The obtained results can provide useful insights on designing optimal SCWG process for treating oil-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) presents notable advantages in biomass energy utilization. The exploration of the reaction mechanism of lignin in supercritical water holds significance in advancing and refining the biomass SCWG process. In this work, syringol was selected as a lignin model compound to study the SCWG mechanism of lignin through a combination of molecular simulation and experiments. The results show that the ether bond is rapidly cleaved in the reaction initial stages. while the phenolics dearomatization has a slower rate and temperature exerts a considerable influence on the dearomatization process. Four degradation pathways are proposed based on the molecular simulations. In the context of the dearomatization reaction, DFT calculations are performed to determine the energy barriers associated with each of the four pathways. Notably, the energy barrier for the most favorable pathway is found to be 291.96 kJ/mol. A lumped kinetic model is constructed based on the reaction pathway, and the reliability of the model is verified by both experiments and DFT calculations. This paper offers valuable assistance in optimizing reaction pathways.
