Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. The strategy provided in our study is expected to be a precious guideline for designing an ideal electrode for energy storage devices. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Facile Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Li4Ti5O12 Microspheres for High Rate Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres assembled by well-crystalline nanoparticles. The fabrication process is very simple, involving only hydrothermal treatment of commercial anatase TiO2 powder in LiOH solution and a following calcination procedure without employing any surfactants or templates. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis were used to characterize their morphologies and structures. Such Li4Ti5O12 nano/microspherical superstructures, with sizes of ca. 4 mu m in diameter, exhibits rich hierarchical pores and a specific surface area of 57.5 m(2) g(-1). A possible growth mechanism of the nano/microspherical superstructure is further discussed. The calcination temperature has a great effect on the crystal structure and electrochemical properties of the materials. The hierarchically porous Li4Ti5O12 microspheres annealed at 700 degrees C have the perfect crystallization and optimal particle size, which can deliver good coulombic efficiency, ultrahigh rate capability at high rates, and excellent capacity retention over 200 cycles.

Abstract:Hierarchical V2O5 microspheres composed of stacked platelets are fabricated through a facile, low-cost, and energy-saving approach. The preparation procedure involves a room-temperature precipitation of precursor microspheres in aqueous solution and subsequent calcination. Because of this unique structure, V2O5 microspheres manifest a high capacity (266 mA h g(-1)), excellent rate capability (223 mA h g(-1) at a current density 2400 mA g(-1)), and good cycling stability (200 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) as cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Controllable Synthesis of Mesostructures from TiO2 Hollow to Porous Nanospheres with Superior Rate Performance for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Abstract:Uniform TiO2 nanospheres from hollow, core-shell and mesoporous structures have been synthesized using quasi-nano-sized carbonaceous spheres as templates. The TiO2 nanospheres formed after calcination at 400 °C are composed of ∼7 nm nanoparticles and the shells of the hollow TiO2 nanospheres are as thin as a single layer of nanoparticles. The ultrafine nanoparticles endow the hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres with short lithium ion diffusion paths leading to high discharge specific capacities of 211.9 and 196.0 mA h g-1 at a current rate of 1 C (167.5 mA g-1) after 100 cycles, and especially superior discharge specific capacities of 125.9 and 113.4 mA h g-1 at a high current rate of up to 20 C. The hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres also show superior cycling stability with long-term discharge capacities of 103.0 and 110.2 mA h g-1, respectively, even after 3000 cycles at a current rate of 20 C.

Abstract:A hierarchical nanosheet-constructed yolk-shell TiO2 (NYTiO2) porous microsphere is synthesized through a well-designed, one-pot, template-free solvothermal alcoholysis process using tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) as the structure directing reagent. Such a yolk-shell structure with a highly porous shell and dense mesoporous core is quite advantageous as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The outer, 2D nanosheet-based porous (15 nm) shell and the nanocrystal-based inner mesoporous (3 nm) core provide a stable, porous framework, effective grain boundaries and a short diffusion pathway for Li+ and electron transport, facilitating lithium insertion/extraction. The voids between the core and the shell can not only store the electrolyte due to capillary and facilitate charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface but also buffer the volume change during the Li+ insertion/extraction. As a result, NYTiO2 demonstrates excellent Li+ capacity with outstanding cycle performance and superior rate capability at different rates for >700 cycles, retaining a 225 mA h g(-1) reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 1 C. In particular, the reversible capacity can still be maintained at 113 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 10 C. We also observe the formation of homogeneously distributed 5-10 nm Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites on the surface of the nanosheets during the discharge-charge process. The synergy of the yolk-shell structure with dual mesopores in the shell and core and the Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites endow the hierarchical NYTiO2 with high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and outstanding cycle performance.

Abstract:Rational design and controllable synthesis of TiO2 based materials with unique microstructure, high reactivity, and excellent electrochemical performance for lithium ion batteries are crucially desired. In this paper, we developed a versatile route to synthesize hollow TiO2/graphitic carbon (H-TiO2/GC) spheres with superior electrochemical performance. The as-prepared mesoporous H-TiO2/GC hollow spheres present a high specific surface area (298 m(2) g(-1)), a high pore volume (0.31 cm(3) g(-1)), a large pore size (similar to 5 nm), well-defined hollow structure (monodispersed size of 600 nm and inner diameter of similar to 400 nm, shell thickness of 100 nm), and small nanocrystals of anatase TiO2 (similar to 8 nm) conformably encapsulated in ultrathin graphitic carbon layers. As a result, the H-TiO2/GC hollow spheres achieve excellent electrochemical reactivity and stability as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. A high specific capacity of 137 mAh g(-1) can be achieved up to 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 Ag-1 (5 C). We believe that the mesoporous H-TiO2/GC hollow spheres are expected to be applied as a high-performance electrode material for next generation lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous TiO2 based composites (pure TiO2 and TiO2/carbon (TiO2/C) composite) were synthesized by a facile sol-gel process followed by post- calcination. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) acts as a phase separation inducer as well as a carbon source. The as-prepared TiO2 based composites possess an interesting hierarchically porous structure constructed of cocontinuous macropores and mesoporous skeletons consisting of interconnected nanocrystals and in situ distributed carbon. The hierarchically porous TiO2/C composite shows excellent electrochemical performance with fast lithium ion diffusion and electronic transport, resulting from the hierarchically porous structure and conductive carbon material. The TiO2/C composite calcined at 500 degrees C exhibits the highest BET surface area of 170 m(2) g(-1), superior cycling stability (delivers a remarkable discharge capacity of 132 mA h g(-1) at 1 C after 100 cycles) and excellent rate capability (over 96 mA h g(-1) at 30 C rate). The results indicate that these hierarchically porous TiO2 based composites could be promising anode materials for high performance lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:A new anatase/rutile TiO2 nanocomposite microspheres (ART) electrode with hierarchically porous structures was successfully synthesized by a one-step route under mild hydrothermal conditions. The morphology, crystal structure and phase composition, specific surface area and pore size distribution of the obtained nanocomposite were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements. The as-synthesized nanocomposite microspheres electrodes exhibited superior specific capacity and high-rate charge–discharge performance for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) (∼103 mA h g−1 at 30 C after 100 charge–discharge cycles, 1 C = 170 mA g−1) as compared to commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (P25). The improvement is mainly attributed to enhanced Li-ion diffusion and efficient charge transport as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Most importantly, the materials architecture used in this study, comprising of dual-phase TiO2 nanocrystals with hierarchically porous structures would be a general concept that could be applicable in the development of other mixed-phase electrode materials for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Hollow TiO2–X porous microspheres consisted of numerous well-crystalline nanocrystals with superior structural integrity and robust hollow interior were synthesized by a facile sol-gel template-assisted approach and two-step carbonprotected calcination method, together with hydrogenation treatment. They exhibit a uniform diameter of ~470 nm with a thin porous wall shell of ~50 nm in thickness. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and pore volume are ~19 m2/g and 0.07 cm3/g, respectively. These hollow TiO2–X porous microspheres demonstrated excellent lithium storage performance with stable capacity retention for over 300 cycles (a high capacity of 151 mAh/g can be obtained up to 300 cycles at 1 C, retaining 81.6% of the initial capacity of 185 mAh/g) and enhanced rate capability even up to 10 C (222, 192, 121, and 92.1 mAh/g at current rates of 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 C, respectively). The intrinsic increased conductivity of the hydrogenated TiO2 microspheres and their robust hollow structure beneficial for lithium ion-electron diffusion and mitigating the structural strain synergistically contribute to the remarkable improvements in their cycling stability and rate performance.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous metal-TiO2/graphitic carbon microspheres (M-TiO2/GCM) (where M= W, Sn, Ni, Co, or Ce) were synthesized for the first time by a simple colloidal crystal templating method. Xray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscope analysis techniques were used to characterize the samples. It was observed that the amount of acetone solvent had great influence on the morphology of composites, and the obtained M-TiO2/GCM composite microspheres possessed hierarchical porosity with large specific surface area, high metallic compound content, and graphitic carbon frameworks, giving the materials wide potential applications as catalysts, adsorbents and electrode materials.

Abstract:Inspired by the biomineralization of unicellular diatoms, a biomimetic approach based on template (pluronic F127 micelle cluster)-induced self-assembly of α-cyclodextrin is developed to create hierarchical porous graphitic carbon spheres via hydrothermal treatment followed by pyrolysis. The as-obtained carbon spheres combine the features required for high-power electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), such as high degree of graphitization, large surface area with hierarchically distributed pore sizes as well as doping with heteroatoms, which synergistically contribute to their impressive electrochemical properties. When applied as an anode for LIBs, the carbon spheres exhibit high reversible capacity (ca. 700 mA h g–1 at 50 mA g–1), good cycling stability, and remarkably outstanding high-rate performance (ca. 600, 450, and 290 mA h g–1 obtained at a current density of 1, 10, and 30 A g–1, respectively), which is among the best of present pure carbon materials for LIBs applications. The fabrication process is straightforward and cost-effective, providing a new methodology for the tailored design of carbon materials with enhanced power densities for energy storage applications.

Abstract:A self-templated strategy is developed to fabricate hierarchical TiO2/SnO2 hollow spheres coated with graphitized carbon (HTSO/GC-HSs) by combined sol-gel processes with hydrothermal treatment and calcination. The as-prepared mesoporous HTSO/GC-HSs present an approximate yolk-double-shell structure, with high specific area and small nanocrystals of TiO2 and SnO2, and thus exhibit superior electrochemical reactivity and stability when used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. A high reversible specific capacity of about 310 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 5 A g(-1) can be achieved over 500 cycles indicating very good cycle stability and rate performance.

Abstract:Building nanocomposite architectures based on nanocarbon materials (such as carbon nanotubes and graphene nanosheets) and metal‐oxide nanoparticles is of great interests for electrochemical energy storage. Here, an ionic‐liquid‐assisted strategy is presented to mediate the in situ growth of TiO2 nanocrystals with controlled size on carbon nanotubes and graphene, and also reduce the modified carbon supports to recover the graphitic structure simultaneously. The as‐prepared nanocomposites exhibit a highly porous and robust structure with intimate coupling between TiO2 nanocrystals and carbon supports, which offers facile ion and electron transport pathway as well as high mechanical stability. When evaluated as electrode materials for lithium‐ion batteries, the nanocomposites manifest high specific capacity, long cycling lifetime, and excellent rate capability, showing their promising application in high‐performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:Owing to their unique structural advantages, TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures assembled by low-dimensional (LD) building blocks have been extensively used in the energy-storage/-conversion field. However, it is still a big challenge to produce such advanced structures by current synthetic techniques because of the harsh conditions needed to generate primary LD subunits. Herein, a novel one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 hierarchical porous fibrous nanostructure constructed by TiO2 nanobelts is synthesized by combining a room-temperature aqueous solution growth mechanism with the electrospinning technology. The nanobelt-constructed 1D hierarchical nanoarchitecture is evolves directly from the amorphous TiO2/SiO2 composite fibers in alkaline solutions at ambient conditions without any catalyst and other reactant. Benefiting from the unique structural features such as 1D nanoscale building blocks, large surface area, and numerous interconnected pores, as well as mixed phase anatase-TiO2(B), the optimum 1D TiO2 hierarchical porous nanostructure shows a remarkable high-rate performance when tested as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (107 mA h g-1 at ∼10 A g-1) and can be used in a hybrid lithium-ion supercapacitor with very stable lithium-storage performance (a capacity retention of ∼80% after 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1). The current work presents a scalable and cost-effective method for the synthesis of advanced TiO2 hierarchical materials for high-power and stable energy-storage/-conversion devices.

Abstract:A hierarchical meso-/micro-porous graphitized carbon with uniform mesopores and ordered micropores, graphitized frameworks, and extra-high surface area of ∼2200 m2/g, was successfully synthesized through a simple one-step chemical vapor deposition process. The commercial mesoporous zeolite Y was utilized as a meso-/ micro-porous template, and the small-molecule methane was employed as a carbon precursor. The as-prepared hierarchical meso-/micro-porous carbons have homogeneously distributed mesopores as a host for electrolyte, which facilitate Li+ ions transport to the large-area micropores, resulting a high reversible lithium ion storage of 1000 mA h/g and a high columbic efficiency of 65% at the first cycle.

Abstract:Mesoporous hollow TiO2 microspheres with controlled size and hierarchical nanostructures are designed from a process employing in suit template-assisted and hydrothermal methods. The results show that the hollow microspheres composed of mesoporous nanospheres possess very stable reversible capacity of 184mAhg−1 at 0.25C and exhibit extremely high power of 122mAhg−1 at the high rate of 10C. The superior high-rate and high-capacity performance of the sample is attributed to the efficient hierarchical nanostructures. The hollow structure could shorten the diffusion length for lithium ion in the microspheres. The large mesoporous channels between the mesoporous nanospheres provide an easily-accessed system which facilitates electrolyte transportation and lithium ion diffusion within the electrode materials. The electrolyte, flooding the mesoporous channels, can also lead to a high electrolyte/electrode contact area, facilitating transport of lithium ions across the electrolyte/electrode interface. The small mesopores in the meosporous nanospheres can make the electrolyte and lithium ion further diffuse into the interior of electrode materials and increase electrolyte/electrode contact area. The small nanoparticles can also ensure high reversible capacity.
Rational Fabrication of Well-Defined Mesoporous Carbon- Supported TiO2 Nanostructures for Anode Material of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Well-defined mesoporous carbon-supported TiO2 heterostructures, especially with a modulated TiO2 crystalline phase and tunable physicochemical properties of carbon support, hold great potential for numerous advanced applications, but their rational fabrication remains challenging. In this work, a kind of pyrrole-containing bifunctional block copolymer (PEO-b-PPHMA) that can serve as both a structure-directing agent for the generation of mesostructures and a precursor for the formation of robust carbon materials was synthesized to fabricate such heterostructured materials. Based on the self-assembly of PEO-b-PPHMA and its chemical transformation in confined nanochannels, a strategy for the facile construction of diverse well-defined mesoporous TiO2 with integrated carbon layer networks was developed by using a single block copolymer. Importantly, the generated carbon networks (supports) provide sufficient thermal stability to access highly crystalline TiO2 skeletons and to modulate the TiO2 crystalline phase without collapse of the preformed mesoporous structures. Moreover, not only the nitrogen content in the formed carbon layer is easily tunable by varying the treatment temperature but also the functional moieties such as plasmonic particles and redox sites can be flexibly incorporated into the formed carbon layer by employing different oxidative agents for pyrrole chemical transformation. These advantageous synthesis features enable facile and rational access to a series of well-defined mesoporous carbon-supported TiO2 heterostructures with enhanced or new properties. As a demonstration, one mesoporous carbon-supported TiO2 was prepared and used for lithium battery application, exhibiting excellent performance at the forefront of the relevant works in the literature. The obtained results indicate that our synthetic concept may offer new opportunities to develop novel TiO2 nanomaterials for diverse applications.
