Abstract:Purpose: To assess quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) for reducing the inconsistency of standard magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequences in measurements of cerebral microbleed burden.Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was HIPAA compliant and institutional review board approved. Ten patients (5.6%) were selected from among 178 consecutive patients suspected of having experienced a stroke who were imaged with a multiecho gradient-echo sequence at 3.0 T and who had cerebral microbleeds on T2*-weighted images. QSM was performed for various ranges of echo time by using both the magnitude and phase components in the morphology-enabled dipole inversion method. Cerebral microbleed size was measured by two neuroradiologists on QSM images, T2*-weighted images, susceptibility-weighted (SW) images, and R2* maps calculated by using different echo times. The sum of susceptibility over a region containing a cerebral microbleed was also estimated on QSM images as its total susceptibility. Measurement differences were assessed by using the Student t test and the F test; P < .05 was considered to indicate a statistically significant difference.Results: When echo time was increased from approximately 20 to 40 msec, the measured cerebral microbleed volume increased by mean factors of 1.49 +/- 0.86 (standard deviation), 1.64 +/- 0.84, 2.30 +/- 1.20, and 2.30 +/- 1.19 for QSM, R2*, T2*-weighted, and SW images, respectively (P < .01). However, the measured total susceptibility with QSM did not show significant change over echo time (P = .31), and the variation was significantly smaller than any of the volume increases (P < .01 for each).Conclusion: The total susceptibility of a cerebral microbleed measured by using QSM is a physical property that is independent of echo time. Abstract:Introduction T2* weighted gradient echo MRI has been increasingly recognized as a sensitive tool in detecting intracerebral hemorrhage. However, its blooming artifacts is highly dependent on imaging parameters including TE, field strength and voxel size, making it difficult to reliably estimate the hematoma volume, a key predictor of morbidity and mortality of hemorrhage. Recently, a novel quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) technology has been developed for processing gradient echo MRI data to map tissue susceptibility property without blooming artifacts and dependence on imaging parameters. Hypothesis We assessed the hypothesis that hematoma volume measurement on QSM is independent of imaging parameters, eliminating its TE dependence on gradient echo MRI. Method A retrospective image analysis of MRI was approved by our IRB with HIPPA compliance. We randomly selected 16 patients who underwent intracerebral hemorrhage MRI including a 3D multiecho T2*w sequence: 8-11 echoes with first echo TE/ echo spacing/ TR= 5/5/50 msec. Postprocessed images of gradient echo MRI included susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI), R2* (quantitative 1/T2* mapping), and QSM at various TEs. Hematoma volumes were measured from all these images. Results Linear regression of hematoma volume vs TE over all subjects showed substantial slopes for gradient echo magnitude (0.45±0.31 L/s), SWI (0.52±0.46) and R2* (0.39±0.30) but nearly zero slope for QSM (0.01±0.05). At TE=20 msec, hematoma volume on QSM was 0.80x that on gradient echo magnitude image (R2=0.99), and hematoma volume on CT is also 0.8x that on gradient echo magnitude image according to literature (Stroke 2008;39:2017-2020). Conclusion In conclusion, quantitative susceptibility mapping can provide reliable measurement of hematoma volume, independent echo time and similar to CT.

Abstract:Cerebral microbleeds(CMBs) have been increasingly recognized with the development of advanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) techniques. Recent studies of microbleeds experienced explosive growth, becoming a hot spot of cerebrovascular disease and dementia research. However, the research about radiological-pathological correlation and the mechanisms of CMBs is not much. This review will summarize MRI criteria, radiological-pathological correlation, risk factors and the mechanisms of CMBs according to imaging and pathological studies, in order to provide an important basis for the further research of microbleeds-related ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.
Clinical Detection of Cerebral Microbleeds with Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping in Essential Hypertension

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the magnetic susceptibility of Cerebral Microbleeds (CMBs) in patients with Essential Hypertension (EH) by Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) sequence and to explore the application value of QSM sequence in CMBs of EH patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 33 EH patients with CMBs were enrolled in this study. The routine scan and QSM sequence were performed using the 3.0T Discovery750 Superconducting Magnetic Resonance Scanner. The distribution of CMBs in the spatial space was analyzed statistically. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility of CMBs and the baseline data of EH patients was analyzed. Results: 178 CMBs were observed with QSM sequence, which was significantly more than those of the conventional sequences. The number of CMBs was the largest in the basal ganglia-thalamus region, followed by the cortical-subcortical region. The magnetic susceptibility of CMBs was in the range of 0.112-0.494 and the mean value was 0.267, which was statistically different between the risk stratification groups. The susceptibility of basal ganglia-thalamus lesion was associated with risk stratification, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, age and course of disease in EH patients. There was a positive correlation between the area of the QSM original image and the magnetic susceptibility value of the lesion in each region. Conclusion: The QSM sequence can measure CMBs better than the conventional sequences. The CMBs of EH patients have the best incidence in the basal ganglia and the thalamus region, followed by the cortical-cortical area. The QSM sequence can provide favourable information for scientific studies and clinical applications in EH patients. And it can provide more imaging basis to understand the impact of hypertension on cerebral blood vessels and the occurrence of CMBs lesions, development, etc.
Detection of Cerebral Microbleeding by Susceptibility Weighted Imaging Sequence and Research on Relation Between CMBs and Risk Factors

Abstract:Objective To explore the advantage of SWI to detect CMBs and analyze relative risk factors and its clinical significance.Materials and Methods CMBs were detected by conventional magnetic resonance sequences and susceptibility weighted imaging sequence(SWI).189 patients were collected,among them,there were 79 patients with CMBs.Patients with CMBs were tested for cognitive function by using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MOCA)and the simple intelligent state examination(MMSE).Results The detection of number of CMBs was obviously more in SWI than that in conventional sequences;and most of CMBs were located in the basal ganglia and temporal lobe.Cerebral microbleeds occurred significantly associated with hypertension,diabetes mellitus,the severity of leucoaralosis,acute cerebral infarction and lacunar infarction(P0.01).The sum of cerebral microbleeds of CMBs patients had significantly negative relation with the total score MoCA(r=-0.86,P0.00)and MMSE(r=-0.79,P0.00).Conclusion SWI is superior to conventional MR sequence to visualize CMBs.Cerebral microbleeds occurred significantly associated with hypertension,diabetes mellitus,the severity of leucoaralosis,acute cerebral infarction and lacunar infarction.The great quantity of CMBs are closely related to cognitive dysfunction.
Comparison of ESWAN, SWI-SPGR, and 2D T2*-Weighted GRE Sequence for Depicting Cerebral Microbleeds

Abstract:PURPOSE:We aimed to compare images obtained with an Enhanced 3D multi-echo GRE T2*-weighted angiography (ESWAN) sequence with those obtained with a susceptibility-weighted imaging-spoiled gradient-recalled echo (SWI-SPGR) sequence and a two-dimensional (2D) T2*-weighted gradient-recalled echo (GRE) sequence for the description of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) in hypertensive patients (elderly people). METHODS:A total of 273 elderly hypertensive patients were imaged in a 3.0-T MR scanner using ESWAN, SWI-SPGR, and 2D T2*-weighted GRE sequence, respectively. The presence, number, and location of CMBs and scanning and postprocessing time were recorded for both sequences, and the differences were tested using nonparametric McNemar and Friedman tests. RESULTS:CMBs were detected by 2D T2*-weighted GRE images in 54 participants, SWI-SPGR images in 83 participants, and ESWAN images in 88 participants. The participants with CMBs detected by 2D T2*-weighted GRE sequence were fewer than those with CMBs detected by SWI-SPGR or ESWAN sequences (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between SWI-SPGR and ESWAN sequences to detect the CMBs in number (P > 0.05). Among the participants with CMBs visualized in both sequences, most patients had CMBs in the subcortical white matter and at deep locations. The participants who had CMBs in the infratentorial region were fewer. The acquisition time of ESWAN images was slightly longer than that of SWI-SPGR images. CONCLUSIONS:ESWAN sequence was not superior to SWI-SPGR sequence in depicting CMBs at 3.0-T MR, but both of these sequences were superior to 2D T2*-weighted GRE sequence.
Automatic Cerebral Microbleeds Detection from MR Images Via Independent Subspace Analysis Based Hierarchical Features

Abstract:With the development of susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) technology, cerebral microbleed (CMB) detection is increasingly essential in cerebrovascular diseases diagnosis and cognitive impairment assessment. Clinical CMB detection is based on manual rating which is subjective and time-consuming with limited reproducibility. In this paper, we propose a computer-aided system for automatic detection of CMBs from brain SWI images. Our approach detects the CMBs within three stages: (i) candidates screening based on intensity values (ii) compact 3D hierarchical features extraction via a stacked convolutional Independent Subspace Analysis (ISA) network (iii) false positive candidates removal with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier based on the learned representation features from ISA. Experimental results on 19 subjects (161 CMBs) achieve a high sensitivity of 89.44% with an average of 7.7 and 0.9 false positives per subject and per CMB, respectively, which validate the efficacy of our approach.

Abstract:Aim:To evaluate the relationship between cerebral microbleeds(CMBs)and the development of stroke.Methods:The patients,including 50 cases of cerebral hemorrhage,50 cases of cerebral infarction and 30 cases of control group were examined with T1WI,T2WI and GRE-T2*WI.The frequency,location, number of CMBs and stroke location,leukoaraiosis,diabetes,hyperlipemia,previous stroke history of patients were recorded.All data were statistically analyzed by using SPSS13.0.Results:CMBs incidence in cerebral hemorrhage group,cerebral infarction group and control group was 76%,36% and 10% respectively.CMBs was correlative with hypertension,stroke history,age and leukoaraiosis,while no significant relationship with diabetes and hyperlipemia.Conclusion:It was revealed that the incidence of CMBs was so high in stroke. Recognition of CMBs will be of significance to prevent and cure stroke.
Value of Multiple Sequences at 3.0T Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Diagnosis of Cerebral Microbleeds

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the value of susceptibility weighted imaging(SWI) and other sequences (T_1WI,T_2WI and DWI) for the diagnosis of cerebral microbleeds(CMBs) at 3.OT MR. Methods Twenty-one patients with cerebrovascular diseases were scanned with different MRI sequences which included SWI,T_1 WI,T_2WI and DWI.Utilizing results of SWI as gold standard,the sensitivity for detection of CMBs was compared.Results CMBs in each sequence appeared as round or oval hypointensities.A total of 261(12.4 ± 9.4 per patient) CMBs were detected with SWI,while 96(4.6 ± 4.0) with DWI,55(2.6 ± 2.8) with T_1WI and 66(3.1 ± 3.1) with T_2WI. When SWI was considered as the gold standard,the detection sensitivity of the other three sequences were 36.8% ,21.1% and 25.3%.There was statistically significant difference in the number of CMBs detected by different sequences (P 0.01).The CMBs most frequently detected by SWI were in cortex-subcortical region,followed by the basal ganglia,thalamus,brain stem and cerebellum area.Conclusions SWI is the ideal method for diagnosis of CMBs while conventional sequence is helpful to detection of CMBs.
Correlation study and clinical value analysis between cerebral microbleeds and white matter hyperintensity with high-field susceptibility-weighted imaging

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the relationship between white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) using susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) with high resolution. Additionally, it sought to analyze the clinical significance of SWI with high resolution and its potential to guide intravenous thrombolysis in stroke patients. In this retrospective analysis, we examined 96 patients with hypertension after acute stroke in our hospital using SWI. Demographic and medical data of these 96 patients were collected. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between CMBs and the grading of WMH. A significant positive correlation was observed between CMBs and the grade of WMH (R = 0.593, P < .05). The data also revealed a superior ROC area under the curve for the modified Fazekas grading of WMH, which was 0.814 (P < .05). There is a positive correlation between CMBs and the grading of leukoaraiosis in patients with acute stroke and hypertension. The higher the degree of WMH, the more severe the microvascular lesions, increasing the likelihood of intracranial hemorrhage. SWI can provide valuable guidance for administering intravenous thrombolysis in patients with acute stroke.

Abstract:Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs),as an important imaging marker of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD),is a subclinical damage caused by small hemosiderin deposits indicative of prior cerebral microscopic hemorrhage.In recent years,CMBs have become an important research issue in the field of neuroimaging with the development of newer magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods for the higher detection rate of the CMBs.It must to be mentioned that CMBs plays a crucial role in the formatting process of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI),which caused researcher's attention.This review focuses on the research progress in epidemiological status,pathological mechanisms,risk factors,imaging manifestations,clinical features and treatment therapies of CMBs,in order to provide theoretical references for the early detection,prevention and treatment of CSVD and VCI.
A Clinical Research on Real-Time Monitoring of Cerebral Edema After Basal Ganglia Hemorrhage Based on Near-Field Coupling Phase Shift Technology

Abstract:A novel method was developed based on near-field coupling phase shift (NFCPS) to perform non-contact and bedside monitoring of cerebral edema in the intensive care unit (ICU). A total of 17 subjects were selected to conduct real-time NFCPS monitoring of cerebral edema and divided into surgical group, conservative group and control group. The data were collected at an interval of 12 h, until the patients left the ICU for various reasons, such as being transferred to the general ward or discharged from the hospital. Continuous collection was conducted for 15 min at each time point and then the phase shift was recorded as the NFCPS value. The computed tomography (CT) images of the surgical group and the conservative group were obtained at the same time points. The surgical group had the most drastic changes (<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$- 3.42\,\pm \,6.0$ </tex-math></inline-formula> degrees, at 12 h; <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$- 12.85\,\pm \,10.58$ </tex-math></inline-formula> degrees, at 24 h; <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$- 5.04\,\pm \,2.65$ </tex-math></inline-formula> degrees, at 36 h; <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$0.05~\pm ~5.74$ </tex-math></inline-formula> degrees, at 48 h). The overall brain conductivity may show a decreasing trend at first and then a rising trend in patients who suffer from a hemorrhagic stroke. The comparative analysis of NFCPS and CT images revealed that NFCPS can also reflect the pathophysiological changes of the brain. This research demonstrates the robust clinical feasibility of NFCPS in the non-invasive real-time monitoring of cerebral edema. In addition, the change characteristics of the overall brain conductivity in hemorrhagic stroke patients provide guidance for subsequent research.

Abstract:Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are defined as hypointense foci visible on T2*-weighted and susceptible-weighted MRI sequences. CMBs are increasingly recognised with the widespread use of MRI in healthy individuals as well as in the context of cerebrovascular disease or dementia. They can also be encountered in major critical medical conditions such as in patients requiring extracorporeal mechanical oxygenation. The advent of MRI-guided postmortem neuropathological examinations confirmed that, in the context of cerebrovascular disease, the vast majority of CMBs correspond to recent or old microhaemorrhages. Detection of CMBs is highly influenced by MRI parameters, in particular field strength, postprocessing methods used to enhance T2* contrast and three dimensional sequences. Despite recent progress, harmonising imaging parameters across research studies remains necessary to improve cross-study comparisons. CMBs are helpful markers to identify the nature and the severity of the underlying chronic small vessel disease. In daily clinical practice, presence and numbers of CMBs often trigger uncertainty for clinicians especially when antithrombotic treatments and acute reperfusion therapies are discussed. In the present review, we discuss those clinical dilemmas and address the value of CMBs as diagnostic and prognostic markers for future vascular events.
Study of Phase Value from ESWAN in Astrocytic Tumor Grading

Abstract:Purpose: To explore the value of phase value from ESWAN in astrocytic tumor grading.Methods: Imagings of thirty-five patients with astrocytic tumors,which were proved by pathological examinations,were analyzed.ROIs were set in tumors,its contralateral brain parenchyma,areas around the tumors(2 cm) and its opposite area,and then the phase values were measured.The phase values in different grade astrocytic tumors were compared.Results: There was signif icant difference between the groups of low-grade astrocytic tumors and its contralateral brain parenchyma.With the increase of astrocytic tumors grade,the phase values were increased.The alterations of phase values might be caused by intratumoral ferritin deposition.Conclusion: The phase values from ESWAN plays a significant role in grading of astrocytic tumors.
Correlation Between White Matter Lesion Score and Volume and Cerebral Microbleeds in Patients with Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between white matter lesions (WMLs) score and volume and cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD).Methods Patients with non-acute lacunar infarction from the CSVD Follow-up Cohort Study in the Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital of Nanjing University from January 2017 to December 2017 were enrolled.The relevant clinical data were collected and 3.0 T cranial MRI examinations were performed,including T1-weighted imaging,T2-weighted imaging,fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence,susceptibility-weighted imaging,and diffusion-weighted imaging.W2MHS software was used to quantify the volume of WMLs.Fazekas method was used to score periventricular and deep WMLs separately.The number of CMBs was counted visually.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent influencing factors of CMBs.Multivariate linear regression equation (stepwise method) was used to analyze the independent influencing factors of the number of CMBs.Medcalc 18.6 was used to deseribe receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.The predictive value of WMLs Fazekas scores and volumes for CMBs was evaluated.Results A total of 82 patients were enrolled,including 31 (37.8％) in CMBs group and 51 (62.2％) in non-CMBs group.The comparison between the two groups showed that smoking,use of antiplatelet agents,history of transient ischemic attack (TIA) or lacunar infarction,larger WMLs volume,higher levels of triacylglycerol,and lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol might be the risk factors for CMBs.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher Fazekas score (odds ratio 1.908,95％ confidence interval 1.210-3.009;P=0.005) and larger WMLs volume (odds ratio 4.620,95％ confidence interval 1.279-16.683;P =0.019) were the independent risk factors for CMBs.Multiple linear regression analysis showed that Fazekas score (r =0.379,P =0.001) and WMLs volume (r =0.260,P =0.023) were independently and positively correlated with the number of CMBs.The ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve of Fazekas scores predicting CMBs was 0.768 (95％ confidence interval 0.654-0.881).The optimal cut-off value was 3,the sensitivity was 61.29％,and the specificity was 90.20％.The area under the curve of WMLs volume predicting CMBs was 0.783 (95％ confidence interval 0.677-0.867).The optimal cut-off value was the volume of WMLs reaching 2 137.96 mm3.The sensitivity was 73.33％,and the specificity was 84.00％.Conclusion WMLs and CMBs had significant correlation in patients with CSVD.The WMLs Fazekas score and volume quantification are expected to serve as the alternative indicators for the urgent assessment of CMBs.
Determination of Detection Sensitivity for Cerebral Microbleeds Using Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging.

Abstract:Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small brain hemorrhages caused by the break down or structural abnormalities of small vessels of the brain. Owing to the paramagnetic properties of blood degradation products, CMBs can be detected in vivo using susceptibility‐weighted imaging (SWI). SWI can be used not only to detect iron changes and CMBs, but also to differentiate them from calcifications, both of which may be important MR‐based biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, SWI can be used to quantify the iron in CMBs. SWI and gradient echo (GE) imaging are the two most common methods for the detection of iron deposition and CMBs. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the number of voxels detected in the presence of a CMB on GE magnitude, phase and SWI composite images as a function of resolution, signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR), TE, field strength and susceptibility using in silico experiments. Susceptibility maps were used to quantify the bias in the effective susceptibility value and to determine the optimal TE for CMB quantification. We observed a non‐linear trend with susceptibility for CMB detection from the magnitude images, but a linear trend with susceptibility for CMB detection from the phase and SWI composite images. The optimal TE values for CMB quantification were found to be 3 ms at 7 T, 7 ms at 3 T and 14 ms at 1.5 T for a CMB of one voxel in diameter with an SNR of 20: 1. The Use of Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging to Detect Cerebral Microbleeds after Lacunar Infarction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the value of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) technology to detect cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) in senile cerebral lacunar infarction patients; and to evaluate the complicated cerebral hemorrhage risk after patients with CMBs took aspirin, an antiplatelet medication or received anticoagulant therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS MRI scanning, using GRE-T2*WI, SWI and FSE sequences (T1WI, T2WI, and T2FLAIR), was performed on the three groups: (1) a cerebral lacunar infarction group; (2) cerebral lacunar infarction with cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) group; and (3) a healthy elderly group. A total of 60 cases were in each group (180 total patients). In addition, the lacunar infarction group and lacunar infarction with CMBs groups were both treated with formal antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy, according to medical guidelines. Patients were followed for 12 months, during which time their cerebral hemorrhages and post-event effects were observed. The relativity of CMBs, antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulant therapy and cerebral hemorrhage transformation was analyzed and defined. The two groups of research patients with lacunar infarctions were scanned with relevant sequences. RESULTS The SWI scanning sequence showed the highest positive rate of CMBs, followed by GRE-T2*WI and other conventional scanning sequences. T1WI, T2WI and T2FLAIR showed a relatively lower positive rate of CMBs. In the cerebral lacunar infarction group and healthy elderly group, 34 cases in the SWI sequence showed 84 positive sites; 18 cases in the GRE-T2*WI sequence showed 40 positive sites; 2 cases in the T1WI sequence showed 4 positive sites; and 6 cases in the T2WI sequence showed 11 positive sites. After a chi-squared test, the differences between the sequences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). In the lacunar infarction group, 26 cases (43.33%) exhibited microbleeding lesions, while the normal control group represented 8 cases (13.33%). The lacunar infarction group exhibited mild, moderate and severe cases, the three types of CMBs. The normal control group only showed mild hemorrhaging. The degree of lacunar infarction was significantly related to the severity of CMBs (p < 0.05). After patients with CMBs had received formal antiplatelet therapy and anticoagulation therapy, one case in the lacunar infarction with microbleeds group showed cerebral hemorrhaging, but this had no statistical significance (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The SWI scanning sequence is more sensitive than the GRE-T2*WI sequence. The GRE-T2*WI sequence is more sensitive than the conventional FSE sequence. SWI is highly sensitive and specific to the diagnosis of CMBs. It is an accurate and effective method for the analysis and diagnosis of CMBs. If patients with CMBs caused by lacunar infarction are treated with antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy, the risk of cerebral hemorrhagic transformation is relatively smaller within 12 months. However, this needs to be observed further to define possible long-term risks.

Abstract:Objective To detect the cerebral microhemorrhage foci using T2 Star weighted angiography(SWAN).Methods Fifteen patients with cortical or subcortical microhemorrhage were selected from 42 patients who underwent conventional MR(T1WI,T2WI),DWI,T2 GRE and SWAN scan.SWAN and T2 GRE images were compared.Results More bleeding foci were observed on SWAN images than on T2 GRE images.The cortical or subcortical bleeding foci observed on T2 GRE images accounted for 41.7% of those observed on SWAN images.The contrast to noise ratio(CNR) was higher on SWAN images than on T2 GRE images.Conclusion SWAN is a new MR technique and can show early cerebral microhemorrhage foci.

Abstract:Chronic cerebral hemorrhage (CCH) in the brain is an important clinical problem that is often monitored and studied with expensive devices such as MRI and PET, which are not readily available in low economical resource parts of the world. We have developed a less expensive tool for non-contact monitoring of CCH in the brain. The system measures the phase shift between the electromagnetic signals on the two coils. CCH was induced in the brain of rabbits by stereotactic method. Intracranial pressure (ICP) and Electrocardiograph (ECG) of subjects were monitored for 1.5h. Signals were continuously monitored up to t=1.5h at exciting frequency 10.7MHz. From 0.8 to 2.4 ml of autologous blood was injected (each injection quantity of 0.8 ml, the interval time for 30 minutes). The results show significant phase shifts increase as a function of injection volume. ICP and phase shift were directly proportional to the related, while HRV were stable around 200beats*min-1. Our system has high sensitivity that even 0.8 ml can also be detected. In this study, the curves of inductive phase shift are significantly related to ICP. This observation suggests that the method could be valuable, in addition to continuous monitoring, also for early warning in emergency medicine and critical care units.
