Abstract:Objective To discuss the nursing measures of sub-segmental enteral nutrition combined reinfu-sion of succus entericus for patients with multiple intestinal fistula.Methods Clinical data of 23 cases of patients were analyzed retrospectively.Sub-segmental enteral nutrition include formulations selection and preparation,usage timing and pathway,infusion principle and ‘six degrees’management,pipeline manage-ment,nutritional metabolic monitoring,and succus entericus reinfusion management,fistula management, functional exercise and other measures.Results All 23 patients had achieved excellent effects through the actively succus entericus reinfused management and functional exercise,to ensure the nutrients fully digested and absorbed,which guaranteed the follow-up treatment of patients.Conclusion Sub-segmental enteral nutrition com-bined succus entericus reinfusion is a key method to implement the enteral nutrition,which can effectively manage and prevent the incidence of relevant complications,and guarantee the one time operation.
Clinical Value of Endoscopic Placement of Nasojejunal Feeding Tube for Nutritional Support in Patients with Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical value of endoscopically nasojejunal feeding tube placement (ENFTP) for nutritional support in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Methods Those SAP patients who treated with ENFTP (n= 47) or with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) (n=50) were retrospectively analyzed for laboratory parameters before and 1,2 and 4 weeks after nutrition support. Outcomes in the two groups were compared with respect to complications,mortality, duration of feeding, feeding costs,mechanical ventilation time and length of ICU or hospital stay. Results Four weeks after nutrition sypport, the hemoglobin and albumin were increased in ENFTP group as compared to TPN groups (P < 0. 05), while the blood sugar was decreased significant in ENFTP group than in TPN group (P<0.05). The incidence of peripancreatic or biliary infection and catheter-related infection were lower in ENFTP group than in TPN group. Duration of feeding and hospital stay were shorter, and nutrition cost was lower in ENFTP group (P<0.05). In addition, the APACHE Ⅱ score was significantly improved in ENFTP group(P<0.05). Conclusion ENFTP seems to be safe and less expensive in treatment of patients with acute pancreatitis.

Abstract:Introduction and objectives: The goal of this study is to determine whether the application of semi-solid nutrients could increase the efficiency of the enteral nutrition (EN), which was measured daily by administered volume of nutrition/prescribed volume of nutrition. Methods: A total of 28 subjects were finally enrolled in the study and randomized to receive either intermittent feeding (IF) or intermittent feeding with semi-solid nutrients (IS). Three major parameters concerning EN were evaluated in this study: the daily dosage prescribed by doctor, the actual dosage received by subjects, and the acute complications such as diarrhea, vomiting, regurgitation, bowel distension, and lung infection. Results: There were no statistical differences in NRS-2002, and acute gastrointestinal injury between both groups. The IS group (0.98 +/- 0.06, P<.01) could receive higher percentage of daily prescribed calories compared to IF (0.73 +/- 0.15). The total caloric intake during the first 3 days was higher in IS (2589.29 +/- 844.02 vs. 1685.71 +/- 388.00, P<.01). The incidence of feeding intolerance (FI) was lower in the IS group (2/14) compared with IF (8/14). However, semi-solid nutrients did not decrease the length of stay, lung infection, or 30-day mortality. Similarly, there was no difference in glycemic variability and stress hyperglycemia. Conclusions: In our cohort of critically ill subjects, the efficiency of the EN was increased by IS, which might be related to the improvement of FI (NCT03017079).

Abstract:To establish a continuous reinfusion of succus entericus and enteral nutrition (EN) in complex high-output fistula (HOF). Percutaneous puncture and catheterization technique was used to establish continuous reinfusion of succus entericus and EN in complex HOF. From May 2010 to June 2018, 21 patients with complex HOF used continuous reinfusion of succus entericus and EN. Six of them were completely cured, and 15 cases were cured after definitive surgery. Percutaneous puncture and catheterization technique was shown to be a useful and effective method for establishing continuous reinfusion of succus entericus and EN in patients with complex HOF. This method can prevent succus entericus loss and remove the barrier to implementing EN in HOF.
Established enteral nutrition pathway in a severe acute pancreatitis patient with duodenum fistula: a case report

Abstract:Enteral feeding is the preferred way to provide nutritional support in patients with high nutritional risk but relatively normal gastrointestinal function; thus, establishing a safe and a reliable pathway of enteral nutrition (EN) is of great importance. There are many techniques for placing the feeding tube, such as blind placement at bedside, assisting by fluoroscopy and endoscopy, surgical and so on. Despite these variable techniques, it is still difficult to obtain the pathway for EN in some specific patients. Here, we present a recent case of infected pancreatic/peripancreatic necrosis complicated by a duodenal enteric fistula in whom we establish the feeding pathway extraordinarily. Briefly, after several failed attempts of placing the nasojejunal feeding tube, a jejunal feeding tube was placed percutaneously guided by computed tomography, and EN was successfully applied thereafter. With the implementation of EN, duodenal fistula healed without surgical intervention. As EN is pivotal for the recovery of duodenal fistula, this novel approach could be beneficial in selected patients.

Abstract:This paper reports the experience of nutritional support and functional exercises in a case of severe acute pancreatitis with multiple intestinal fistulas.According to the clinical features of the patient,a nutritional support and functional exercises plan was made with the help of the nutrition specialized nurse.The patient received total parenteral nutrition support,multiple ways of enteral nutrition and digested transfusion,and took active functional exercises.As a result,the patient's body weight increased and the intestinal fistulas were repaired successfully.

Abstract:Background: Malnutrition and sepsis remain the leading causes of death in gastrointestinal fistulas. Establishment of appropriate access of enteral nutrition is still challenging for patients with multiple fistulas. Case Presentation: We presented in this case a patient with multiple post-operative fistulas and anastomotic leakages. Because of the lack of intestinal integrity for enteral feeding, we performed a step-by-step assessment and monitoring to achieve maximum benefit. Conclusion: The establishment of nutritional feeding access to patients with multiple fistulas requires accurate assessment of sequencing of each fistula limb, percutaneous endoscopic enterostomy, and multiple times fistuloclysis to restore intestinal integrity.
Chyme reinfusion improved outcomes after definitive surgery for small-intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula in patients with enteral nutrition

Abstract:Purpose: In patients suffering from small-intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula who are receiving enteral nutrition (EN), although the function of the small intestine is sufficient, without chyme reinfusion (CR), disuse of the distal intestine of enteroatmospheric fistula may occur. However, CR reverses such pathological changes and have an influence on improving outcomes following definitive surgery (DS) for small-intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula. This study attempted to investigate the effect of preoperative CR in patients with EN on the outcomes after DS for small-intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula. Methods: According to whether CR was performed between January 2012 and December 2019, patients receiving DS for small intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula were divided into the CR group and non-CR group. The effect of preoperative CR was then investigated. Results: A total of 159 patients were finally enrolled, of which 72 patients were in the CR group and 87 patients were in the non-CR group. A total of 47 (29.56%) patients were found to have recurrent fistula after DS, the recurrent fistula rate in the CR group (multivariate odds ratio = 0.557; 95% CI, 0.351-0.842; P = 0.019) was lower. CR was also shown to promote postoperative recovery of bowel function (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.982; 95% CI, 1.199-3.275; P = 0.008), and shorten postoperative length of stay (LOS) (HR = 1.739; 95% CI, 1.233-2.453; P = 0.002). Conclusion: Preoperative CR may reduce the incidence of recurrent fistula, time to return of bowel function and postoperative LOS following DS for small-intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula.

Abstract:AIM: To elucidate the role of endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) in the treatment of acute pancreatitis. METHODS: Ninety patients with acute pancreatitis were randomly divided into two groups: EST group and control group. All the patients underwent pancreatitis routine therapy, additionally the EST group was treated with EST and endoscopic naso-bile drainage (ENBD). The time of disappearance of abdominal symptoms and signs, normalization of amylase, hospitalization and absorption of acute fluid was recorded for all patients. RESULTS: The time of disappearance of abdominal pain, normalization of blood and urine amylase and hospitalization was significantly shorter in EST group than in control group. The ratios of disappearance of fluid in mild acute pancreatitis patients was significantly higher in EST group (51.52%, 84.85%, 90.91%, 93.94%) than in the control group (0%, 30.30%, 69.70%, 72.73%, P<0.01 or P<0.05). When the ratios of reduction of fluid in severe acute pancreatitis patients of the EST group were compared (8.33%, 58.33%, 83.33%, 91.67%) with those in the control group (0%, 8.33%, 25% and 41.67%), there were significant differences. Abstract:Background: Although nutrition therapy is favorably considered as an assistant therapeutic measure in critical illness, little data evaluate its role in gastrointestinal fistula patients with severe sepsis after an open abdomen. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of early nutrition therapy in that population. Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients who underwent open abdomen management for gastrointestinal fistula and severe sepsis from January 2001 to June 2009. Nutrition therapy, fistula, abdominal closure, and demographics were noted. Succus entericus reinfusion (SER) was performed for high-output volume or multiple fistulae. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether enteral nutrition (EN) was initiated within 14 days after admission. Delivery route of nutrients, mortality, complications, and time to abdominal closure were compared among groups. Results: Eighty-two patients were included. Fifty-six (68.3%) patients survived to discharge. Forty-one (50%) patients received SER. EN was initiated within 14 days in 36 patients, with a mean initiation time at 8.3 +/- 3.4 days; 46 patients did not start any EN within 14 days (29.9 +/- 20.9 days). The mean age, BMI, APACHE II score, and fistula characteristics were similar between groups. The abdominal closure was accomplished more rapidly in patients fed within 14 days (142.8 vs 184.5 days, P = .017), with decreased mortality (11.1% vs 47.8%, P < .001). Conclusions: Nutrition therapy plays an important role in the management of gastrointestinal fistula with severe sepsis. Abstract:Background: Published experience in feeding patients with enteroatmospheric fistulae is scarce. This study aimed to determine if enteral nutrition (EN) could be safely delivered in the presence of enteroatmospheric fistula. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study from a major fistula treatment center in China. Medical records of patients who developed enteroatmospheric fistulae in the open abdomen after abdominal trauma were reviewed. The timing of initiation and achievement of full strength (25 kcal/kg/d) EN after enteroatmospheric fistula were noted, as well as the incidence of feeding‐associated complications and weaning of parenteral nutrition (PN). The outcomes of open abdomen and enteroatmospheric fistula were also noted. Results: Nine patients were included in this study. EN was successfully implemented in all patients. The median timing of initiation and achievement of full strength of EN after enteroatmospheric fistula was 9 (interquartile range [IQR], 3–22) and 27 (IQR, 22–43) days, respectively. Feeding‐associated complications developed in 1 (11.1%) patient. All patients were liberated from PN at hospital discharge. Split‐thickness skin grafting was performed in all patients, of whom 5 underwent successful delayed abdominal closure, and 4 were awaiting definitive closure. Repair or resection of enteroatmospheric fistula occurred in 8 (88.9%) patients. Conclusion: This study showed that EN could be safely implemented in patients with enteroatmospheric fistulae without complicating the treatment of open abdomen and enteroatmospheric fistula.
A technique to establish fistuloclysis for high-output jejunocutaneous fistula through percutaneous enterostomy: A case report.

Abstract:RATIONALE:Currently, fistucolysis helps to establish intestinal nutrition and succus entericus reinfusion in the case of controllable mature high-output enterocutaneous fistula. However, if the tube cannot reach the distal limb of a fistula, fistuloclysis is not achieved. We proposed a strategy to establish succus entericus reinfusion for intractable intestinal fistula through percutaneous enterostomy. PATIENT CONCERNS:A 43-year-old man was transferred to our facility for postoperative enterocutaneous fistulae, sepsis, malnutrition, and electrolyte and fluid imbalance. The contrast X-ray demonstrated the breakdown of the primary anastomosis, with fistula output ranging from 1500 to 2000 mL/d, despite the administration of medications to reduce gastrointestinal secretions. DIAGNOSES:The patient was diagnosed with high-output anastomosis fistula by gastrointestinal radiography. INTERVENTIONS:We used percutaneous enterostomy to establish fistuloclysis. OUTCOMES:Fistuloclysis was established by percutaneous enterostomy successfully. No complications were found during the past 4-month follow-up after percutaneous enterostomy. He is waiting for reconstruction surgery after 6 months' enteral nutrition (EN). LESSONS:Fistuloclysis-assisted EN, if used appropriately, avoids the complications of long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) and may promote faster fistula healing.
Enteral Nutritional Support in Patients with Gastrointestinal Fistulas

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the possibility and actual role of enteral nutrition support in patients with gastrointestinal fistulas. Methods: One hundred and seventy case of enteric fistula patients were collected from January, 1997 to January, 2000. The days of hospitalization, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), total enteral nutrition (TEN), parenteral plus enteral nutrition (PN+EN) and oral feeding were calculated. The enteral nutritional products and complications of different nutritional support ways were reviewed as well. Results: Among 170 patients, 164 patients received TPN, 129 patients received TEN, 83 patients received PN+EN and 128 patients took oral feeding. The total hospitalization days of 170 patients were 13553. Total TPN days were 6040 (44.6%), TEN days were 3676(27.1%), total PN+EN days were 489(3.6%) and total oral feeding days were 2339(17.3%). The routes of enteral nutrition were jejunostomy(33.1%), nasal gastric tube(25.8%), collecting and reinfusing method(8.6%), nasal jejunum tube( 7.4%) and miscellaneous. Special ways were invented to restore the bowel continuation and resume the oral feeding that include special designed silicon plat intraluminal obturation for ostomy fistula (IO) and hydrostatic occlusion for tract fistula (HO). The main enteral nutritional products were nutrison fiber (47.2%) and pepti 2000 (41.5%). Conclusions: Nutritional support is one of the important treatment procudures in patients with gastrointestinal fistulas,and TPN still remains the main way to provide the nutrition solution.Enteral nutrition can be used safely and effectively in the enteric fistula patients when the intestinal function is available.
Effect of enteral nutrition support on patients with edematous pancreatitis

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of enteral nutrition support on prognosis of edematous pancreatitis.Methods Totally 100 patients with edematous pancreatitis were enrolled from June 2015 to June 2016 in Peking University Shenzhen Hospital;patients who were admitted from June to December 2015 had parenteral nutrition support based on fasting,gastrointestinal decompression and anti-infection therapy (control group);patients who were admitted from December 2015 to June 2016 had enteral nutrition support based on basic therapies(observation group).After 2 weeks of treatment,scores of Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA),Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation Ⅱ (APACHE Ⅱ) and modified Marshall Scale were evaluated;levels of blood glucose and urine amylase,incidence of adverse reactions,recovery time of main symptoms and length of hospital stay were recorded.Results After treatment,scores of APACHE Ⅱ and modified Marshall Scale,levels of blood glucose and urine amylase,incidences of secondary infection and complications in observation group were significantly lower than those in control group [(7.3 ± 1.7) points vs (10.0 ± 1.7) points,(0.8 ± 0.6) points vs (1.2 ± 0.7) points,(6.33 ± 0.16) mmoL/L vs (6.58 ± 0.11) mmol/L,(327 ± 218) U/L vs (544 ± 340)U/L,16.7％ (8/48) vs 38.5％ (20/52),25.0％ (12/48) vs 42.3％ (22/52)] (P ＜ 0.05);systemic inflammatory response syndrome improving time,temperature recovery time,abdominal distension and pain duration time and hospital stay time in observation group were significantly shorter than those in control group [(2.61±0.24)dvs (5.49±1.31)d,(6.6±1.3)dvs (10.2±3.3)d,(2.7±1.0)dvs (5.1 ±1.2)d,(19± 7) d vs (32 ± 7) d] (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusion Enteral nutrition support can effectively relieve illness,reduce complications and promote recovery in patients with edematous pancreatitis.
Reinfusion Enteroclysis Can Successfully Replace Parenteral Feeding in Patients with High-Output Enteral Fistula or Ostomy Awaiting Definitive Surgery

Abstract:Distal bowel reinfusion enteroclysis or fistuloclysis or mucous fistula re-feeding is described as the method of collecting proximal bowel effluents and re-infusing the same into the distal viable bowel with or without effluent processing. Patients with anatomical or functional short bowel syndrome (SBS) are very difficult to manage with great risk of fluid electrolyte imbalance and protein calorie malnutrition. We describe our experience with reinfusion of stoma effluent in these patients, whether it can be used as a stand-alone modality after an initial bridging period of total parenteral nutrition therapy (TPN). Reinfusion enteroclysis was attempted in 30 patients with functional SBS but with distal viable continuous bowel. After an initial bridging period of TPN therapy, gradually increasing quantities of chyme reinfusion was done with a Foley's catheter in the distal bowel until the whole of daily requirements was met by oral feeds and reinfusion enteroclysis. Gradually, the parenteral nutrition (PN) was withdrawn. Daily assessment of patient's oral nutritional adequacy, fluid, and electrolyte balance was done while in the hospital. Patients who were nutritionally stable on exclusive enteroclysis were discharged and were kept on stand-alone "home enteroclysis." The patients were followed until definitive surgery. Even though median length of proximal bowel was just 40 cm from duodeno-jejunal junction, PN could be completely withdrawn in 24 patients; they sustained only on reinfusion enteroclysis. Eighteen patients were discharged and sustained independently on "home enteroclysis." All 30 attained a positive nitrogen balance with weight gain and increasing albumin titers. There were no complications associated to reinfusion and no associated mortality. Successful definitive surgery was carried out in 16 patients, within the 3-month study period. However, 14 patients required more than 3 months for their definitive surgery. During this period, 8 of them continued to be on "exclusive re infusion enteroclysis" and 6 on a combination of PN and reinfusion enteroclysis until the second stage of definitive operative intervention. Reinfusion enteroclysis/fistuloclysis can act as effective stand-alone nutritional therapy in selected patients and adjunctive therapy in all patients of functional SBS with distal viable continuous bowel.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Enterocutaneous fistula (ECF) is an abnormal connection between the gastrointestinal tract and the skin. ECF can lead to massive body fluid loss, hypercatabolism, and malnutrition. Therefore, nutritional support plays a crucial role in managing ECFs and promoting the healing of fistulas. For nutritional support, enteral nutrition (EN) is the preferred method when gastrointestinal function is recovering. Currently, various EN approaches have been applied for different anatomical positions of the ECF. However, the effectiveness of administering EN support for treating lower ECFs still needs further exploration and improvement. CASE SUMMARY We present the case of a 46-year-old male who underwent gastrointestinal stromal tumour resection. Six days after the surgery, the patient presented with fever, fatigue, severe upper abdominal pain, and septic shock. Subsequently, lower ECFs were diagnosed through laboratory and imaging examinations. In addition to symptomatic treatment for homeostasis, total parenteral nutrition support was administered in the first 72 h due to dysfunction of the intestine. After that, we gradually provided EN support through the intestinal obstruction catheter in consideration of the specific anatomic position of the fistula instead of using the nasal jejunal tube. Ultimately, the patient could receive optimal EN support via the catheter, and no complications were found during the treatment. CONCLUSION Nutritional support is a crucial element in ECF management, and intestinal obstruction catheters could be used for early EN administration.

Enteral Refeeding Syndrome after Long-Term Total Parenteral Nutrition

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Early enteral feeding (EF) may result in fever, elevated white blood cell count, increased serum levels of liver enzymes, and diarrhea. We name the complications "enteral refeeding syndrome", as a subtype of refeeding syndrome, because they are likely to result from long-term lack of lumen nutrition. The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of enteral refeeding syndrome after long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and the solution for the disease.METHODS:We collected the clinical data of 100 patients with gastrointestinal fistula, who were cured from Apirl 2001 to July 2002. Their fasting time, daily stool frequency, body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, levels of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and gamma-glutamylcyclotransferase (gamma-GT), white blood cell count, and systemic inflammatory reaction syndrome (SIRS) score were recorded before and 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 days after EF. Student's t test and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data.RESULTS:Of the 100 patients, 56 were cured after selective resection of intestinal fistula, 15 were cured by emergency operation, and 29 recovered spontaneously. The levels of AKP and gamma-GT increased significantly on the 3rd day after EF [On the 3rd day after EF, (243.0 +/- 121.6) U/L and (177.2 +/- 109.9) U/L vs. before EF (181.5 +/- 127.5) U/L and (118.4 +/- 94.2) U/L, P < 0.05], and decreased gradually afterwards. The SIRS scores on the 1st day (1.05 +/- 1.08) and 3rd day (0.96 +/- 1.11) after EF were significantly higher than that before EF (0.72 +/- 0.84), then decreased to 0.83 +/- 0.91, 0.49 +/- 0.73 and 0.32 +/- 0.60 on the 5th, 10th and 15th days after EF. The number of patients with diarrhea at 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 days post-EF were 31, 26, 12, 13, and 7, respectively.CONCLUSIONS:The longer the TPN lasts, the more severe the enteral refeeding syndrome becomes. Continuous EF is effective for the syndrome. Early enteral nutrition is useful in preventing it.
Enteral Nutrition Supplimented with Dietary Fiber in Patients with Enterocutaneous Fistula

Abstract:Objectives:To observe the effect of enteral nutrition on patietns with enterocutaneous fistula,and the effect of dietary fiber on the defective habits. Methods:Thirty one patient with enterocutaneous fistula were randomly divided into control group,single type DF group and mixed DF group,blood chemistry,nutritional parameters and changes of defective habit were recovered. Results:EN was effective in improving the nutritional conditions of patients with EF and preventing cholestasis after long term TPN.Dietary fiber was effective in controlling diarrhea or constipation,mixed DF was more effective than single type. Conclusions:Enterla nutrition supplimented with DF was effective,safe and well tolerated by patietns with EF.

Abstract:Objective To assess the impact of early enteral nutrition (EN) on the intestinal motility of patients after esophagectomy.Methods Thirty-five consecutive patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer by a single surgical team from the Peking University Cancer Hospital from June 2011 to July 2011 were enrolled.Patients were randomly divided into EN group (n=20) and parenteral nutrition group (control group,n=15) within 24 h after esophagectomy procedure.Bowel sound recovery time was monitored by auscultation,and the gastrointestinal tract symptoms were recorded.Results Bowel sound recovery time was (45.1±20.3) h in the EN group,and was (56.7±17.0) h in the control group (P=0.082).Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea,abdominal distension,diarrhea occurred in 4 patients in EN group and 3 patients in control group and were alleviated by lowering infusion speed and more off-bed ambulation,and no significant difference was seen between the two groups (P=1.000).Conclusions Early enteral nutrition in the patients after esophagectomy is safe and feasible.Early enteral nutrition does not delayed bowel function recovery or increase gastrointestinal symptoms.
Chyme Reinfusion Reducing the Postoperative Complications after Definitive Surgery for Small Intestinal Enteroatmospheric Fistula: A Cohort Study

Abstract:Purpose This study is aimed to reveal the role of preoperative chyme reinfusion (CR) in reducing the complications occurring after definitive surgery (DS) for small intestinal enteroatmospheric fistula (EAF). Methods In this study, from January 2012 to December 2019, the patients with small intestinal EAF and receiving a definitive surgery were recruited. Depending on whether the CR has been performed, these patients were divided into either the CR group or the non-CR group. Then, propensity scores matching (PSM) was used to further divide these patients into the PSM CR group or the PSM none-CR group. The clinical characteristics exhibited by the groups were analyzed, and the effect of preoperative CR was investigated. Result A total of 159 patients were finally recruited with 72 patients in the CR group and 87 patients in the non-CR group. The postoperative complications were manifested in a total of 126 cases (79.3%). There were 49 cases in the CR group, and 77 cases in the non-CR group. CR was associated with the occurrence of postoperative complications (multivariate odds ratio [OR] = 0.289; 95% CI: 0.123–0.733; p = 0.006). After 1:1 PSM, there were 92 patients included. The postoperative complications were observed in 67 out of these 92 patients. There were 26 patients in the PSM CR group, and 41 patients in the PSM non-CR group. CR was associated with postoperative complications (multivariate OR = 0.161; 95% CI: 0.040–0.591; p = 0.002). In addition, CR played a role in reducing the recurrence of fistula both before (multivariate OR = 0.382; 95% CI: 0.174–0.839; p = 0.017) and after (multivariate OR = 0.223; 95% CI: 0.064–0.983; p = 0.034) PSM. In addition, there is a protective factor at play for those patients with postoperative ileus before (multivariate OR = 0.209; 95% CI: 0.095–0.437; p < 0.001) and after (multivariate OR = 0.222; 95% CI: 0.089–0.524; p < 0.001) PSM. However, the relationship between CR and incision-related complications was not observed in this study. Conclusion Preoperative CR is effective in reducing postoperative complications after definitive surgery was performed for EAF.
