Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases
Abstract:Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder localized to chromosome 15 and is considered the most common genetic cause of life-threatening obesity. The cause of death in most subjects with PWS has been related to complications of massive obesity. Conventional treatments with behavioral and dietary approaches under the guidance of an expert dietitian have proved unsuccessful. Thus, bariatric surgery remains the last choice for morbidly obese children with PWS. However, the appropriate surgical technique remains a matter of discussion [ [1] Sugerman H.J. Sugerman E.L. DeMaria E.J. et al. Bariatric surgery for severely obese adolescents. J Gastrointest Surg. 2003; 7: 102-107 Crossref PubMed Scopus (319) Google Scholar ]. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is known as a beneficial weight loss procedure for high-risk patients [ [2] Hamoui N. Anthone G.J. Kaufman H.S. Crookes P.F. Sleeve gastrectomy in the high-risk patient. Obes Surg. 2006; 16: 1445-1449 Crossref PubMed Scopus (157) Google Scholar ].
