Abstract:Redundancy allocations strategies are commonly used in reliability engineering to enhance the performance of reliability systems. This paper makes use the hierarchical copula to characterize the dependence structures among the components and hot/cold standbys in series systems. Optimal allocation policies of hot and cold standbys are presented for series systems with dependent components and redundancies under certain conditions imposed on the hierarchical copula as well as the components and spares reliabilities. It is shown that, under certain mild conditions imposed on the copula function and lifetimes of components and redundancies, the optimal allocations should be following the way that the resultant lifetimes for all nodes should be balanced as much as possible to enhance the system's performance. The results extend some related ones well‐known in the literature from the independent case to the dependent setting. Some numerical examples are presented as illustrations. We also present a real application in optimal allocations of redundant wires for improving the reliability of high‐voltage electricity transmission network systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a redundancy allocation problem for a series parallel system with uncertain component lifetimes that minimizes system costs while safeguarding system reliability over a given threshold level. We consider mixed redundancy strategies of cold standby and active redundancy with multiple types of components. We address lifetime uncertainty in the framework of distributionally robust optimization. In particular, we assume the probability distributions of the component lifetimes are not exactly known with only limited distributional information (e.g., mean, dispersion, and support) being available. We protect the worst-case system reliability constraint over all the possible component lifetime distributions that are consistent with the given distributional characteristics. The proposed modeling framework enjoys computationally attractive structures. The evaluation of the worst-case system reliability in our redundancy allocation problem can be transformed into a linear program, and the resulting overall redundancy allocation optimization problem can be cast as a mixed integer linear program that does not induce any additional integer variables (other than original allocation variables). In addition, the extreme joint distribution of component lifetimes can be efficiently recovered by solving a linear program. Our modeling framework can also be extended to incorporate the startup failures and common-cause failures for cold standbys and active parallels, respectively, to cater to more computationally complex settings. Finally, the computational experiments positively demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach in protecting system reliability.

Abstract:This article studies coherent systems of heterogenous and statistically dependent components' lifetimes. We present a sufficient and necessary condition for a stochastically longer system lifetime resulted by allocating a single active redundancy. For exchangeable components' lifetimes, allocating the redundancy to the component with more minimal path sets is proved to produce a more reliable system, and for systems with stochastic arrangement increasing components' lifetimes and symmetric structure with respect to two components, allocating the redundancy to the weaker one brings forth a larger reliability. Abstract:This paper studies the allocation of active redundancies to coherent systems on the context that the base and redundancy components have mutual independent lifetimes. For systems with two symmetric components and systems with one component's minimal cut sets (minimal path sets) covering those of another, we derive sufficient conditions to compare the resultant system lifetimes. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper studies the allocation of independent redundancies with a common life distribution to k-out-of-n systems of independent components with non identical life distributions. A sufficient condition is found for allocating more active redundancies to the weaker component to gain a larger lifetime for k-out-of-n systems, and assigning more standby redundancies to the weaker (stronger) components is proved to yield larger lifetime for series (parallel) systems in the sense of the increasing concave (convex) order. Also, the optimal policy is proved to be majorized by all other policies when the system's components are stochastically ordered.

Abstract:This paper provides a unified modeling idea for both parallel and standby redundancy optimization problems. A spectrum of redundancy stochastic programming models is constructed to maximize the mean system-lifetime, /spl alpha/-system lifetime, or system reliability. To solve these models, a hybrid intelligent algorithm is presented. Some numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. This paper considers both parallel redundant systems and standby redundant systems whose components are connected with each other in a logical configuration with a known system structure function. Three types of system performance-expected system lifetime, /spl alpha/-system lifetime and system reliability-are introduced. A stochastic simulation is designed to estimate these system performances. In order to model general redundant systems, a spectrum of redundancy stochastic programming models is established. Stochastic simulation, NN and GA are integrated to produce a hybrid intelligent algorithm for solving the proposed models. Finally, the effectiveness of the hybrid intelligent algorithm is illustrated by some numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a redundancy allocation problem in a series‐parallel system with uncertain component lifetimes of multiple states, which involves multitype components and mixed redundancy strategy. We develop a distributionally robust redundancy allocation model using state‐dependent ambiguity set, which describes the mean, expected cross‐deviation, and the support conditional on each state of the component lifetime distribution. Our structural analysis of the worst‐case system reliability function identifies a concave equivalent for the conditional worst‐case reliability function in each state and achieves an averaged finite piece‐wise affine representation for the overall worst‐case system reliability function, which enjoys valuable operational insights for reliability evaluation and scalable optimization of the redundancy designs. Furthermore, we analyze the reliability guarantees for the worst‐case reliability in optimality under possible misspecification of ambiguity‐set parameters, which admit the structure of “Reliability Target + Target Surplus + Estimated Elasticity,” and insightfully imply that the auxiliary dual variables obtained via solving the design problem can be regarded as the scale of elasticity. Computationally, the redundancy design problem can be linearized and reformulated as a mixed 0–1 second‐order cone program. Exploiting the above finite piece‐wise affine structure of the worst‐case reliability function, the design problem also admits a practical iterative decomposition scheme with finite convergence, which is more scalable especially for the possible situations of large number of states in practice. Finally, numerical experiments including a case with real‐life data of braking system components well justify the value of state information incorporated by our model in producing favorable cost‐effective redundancy designs for reliability operations.

Abstract:In the literature on active redundancy allocation, the redundancy lifetimes are usually postulated to be independent of the component lifetimes for the sake of technical convenience. However, this unrealistic assumption leads to a risk of inaccurately evaluating system reliability, because it overlooks the statistical dependence of lifetimes due to common stresses. In this study, for k-out-of-n:F systems with component and redundancy lifetimes linked by the Archimedean copula, we show that (i) allocating more homogeneous redundancies to the less reliable components tends to produce a redundant system with stochastically larger lifetime, (ii) the reliability of the redundant system can be uniformly maximized through balancing the allocation of homogeneous redundancies in the context of homogeneous components, and (iii) allocating a more reliable matched redundancy to a less reliable component produces a more reliable system. These novel results on k-out-of-n:F systems in which component and redundancy lifetimes are statistically dependent are more applicable to the complicated engineering systems that arise in real practice. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate these findings.

Abstract:This article deals with the active redundancy allocation to coherent systems. We extend the optimal allocation policy uniformly maximizing the redundant system reliability function to that maximizing the mean lower semi-deviation of the redundant system lifetime, and then we propose a stochastic algorithm to approximate the optimal redundancy allocation policy through maximizing the mean lower semi-deviation of the system lifetime. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the algorithm as well.

Abstract:In this note we deal with the allocation of independent and identical active redundancies to a k-out-of-n system with the usual stochastic order among its independent components. The optimal policy is proved both to assign more redundancies to the weaker component and to majorize all other policies. This improves the corresponding one in Hu and Wang (2009) and serves as a nice supplement to that in Misra, Dhariyal and Gupta (2009) as well.

Abstract:This paper discusses a type of redundancy that is typical in a multi-state system. It considers two interconnected multi-state systems where one multi-state system can satisfy its own stochastic demand and also can provide abundant resource (performance) to another system in order to improve the assisted system reliability. The paper also considers the financial issue for such a system where satisfied demand is associated with financial benefit and unsatisfied demand is associated with penalty. Traditional methods are usually not effective enough for such multi-state systems because of the "dimensional curse" problem. This paper presents the method for evaluation of reliability and corresponding financial issue for multi-state system with such kind of redundancy. The proposed method is based on the special type of universal generating function universal generating function associated with discrete-state continuous-time stochastic process. The numerical example is presented to illustrate the proposed method.

Abstract:Redundancy techniques have been extensively utilized to enhance the reliability of engineering systems. There are three different types of standby techniques, cold, hot, and warm. Warm standby is adopted for less energy consumption and shorter leading time compared with hot standby and cold standby, respectively. Besides redundancy, performance sharing is another strategy to enhance system reliability, where the subsystems with sufficient performance can share the surplus performance with other subsystems with deficient performance. This article considers a demand-based warm standby system with a common bus performance-sharing mechanism, where the subsystems can share performance through the common bus and each subsystem can be configured with warm standby components in order to meet its demand. To be more general, the imperfect switching for the activations of warm standby components is also considered. Moreover, the multi-valued decision-diagram technique is developed to analyze the reliability for the proposed model. The proposed technique can handle systems whose time-to-failure distributions can follow arbitrary distributions in addition to the common utilized exponential distributions. Numerical studies are provided to validate the proposed model and technique.

Abstract:In this paper, an exact algorithm was proposed for optimal redundancy in a series system with multiple component choices. A reformulation of the nonseparable reliability function was approximated by a separable integer programming problem. The resulting separable nonlinear integer programming problem is used to compute upper bounds by Lagrangian relaxation and dual search. A special partition scheme was derived to reduce the duality gap in a branch-and-bound process, thus ensure the convergence of the algorithm. Computational results show that the algorithm is efficient for solving this class of reliability optimization problems.

Abstract:This study addresses the allocation of matched active redundancy components to coherent systems with base components having statistically dependent lifetimes. We consider base component lifetimes and redundancy component lifetimes which are both stochastic arrangement monotone with respect to a pair of components given the lifetimes of the other components. In this context, allocating a more reliable redundancy component to the weaker base component is shown to incur a stochastically larger system lifetime. Numerical examples are presented as an illustration of the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the redundancy allocation problem (RAP) for multi-state series–parallel systems (MSSPSs). For each multi-state component, the exact values of its state probabilities are assumed to be unknown, due to epistemic uncertainty (EU), and only conservative lower and upper bounds of them are given. The objective of the RAP is to simultaneously maximize the supremum and infimum of the system's uncertain availability, under a cost constraint. The problem is two-stage and multi-objective. In this work, we: 1. provide a linear-time algorithm to obtain the component state distribution, under which the uncertain system availability will be at its supremum or infimum; 2. show that the problem is reducible to one-stage; 3. analyze the landscape of MSSPS RAP under EU and propose a modified NSGA-II, with targeted designs of repair and local search operation. The proposed algorithm is compared with standard NSGA-II on multiple benchmarks. The results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the standard NSGA-II in both optimality and time efficiency.

Abstract:Standby redundancy has been extensively applied to critical engineering systems to enhance system reliability. Researches on reliability evaluation for standby systems focus more on systems with binary-state elements. However, multi-state elements with different performances have played a significant role in engineering systems. This paper presents an approach for reliability analysis of standby systems composed of multi-state elements with constant state transition rates and absorbing failure states. The approach allows modelling different standby systems beyond cold, warm and hot ones by taking into account differences in possible maintenance of elements in standby and operation modes and dependence of elements' operational behavior on their initial state at the time of activation. An iterative algorithm for reliability evaluation based on element state probabilities is suggested. Illustrating examples of evaluating reliability of different types of homogeneous and heterogeneous standby systems are demonstrated.
