Abstract:Classical block theory tacitly approves the nonremovable block being absolutely stable and skips stability analysis. However, in practice, small pieces of rock would crack under a huge shear force, resulting in the sliding of nonremovable blocks. This paper proposes a unified analysis method with which to determine the removability and stability of rock blocks. The method integrates the shear resistance of the rock bridges into the anti-sliding force of the block, thus making the unified analysis of the removability and stability possible. Firstly, every possible sliding surface and the intersection lines of fractures are listed. The rock bridges damaged along each possible moving direction are then determined. Afterward, the stability factor along each direction is calculated according to the MohrâCoulomb strength criterion. The minimum stability factor is selected as the actual stability factor of the block and the associated moving direction is considered to be the most likely moving direction of the block. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.
