Abstract:The method of linking sets has been a powerful tool in the study of critical point theory. However, there are situations in which the sets to be used in the problem do not link. If the failure to link is caused by fact that both sets are infinite dimensional, an alternate approach must be found. In this paper, we show how critical point linking theory can be carried over to situations (such as infinite dimensional splitting) where linking does not occur, provided an additional assumption is made on the functional. The assumption we make is that the derivative of the functional has weak-to-weak continuity. This assumption is satisfied in many applications. When the assumption is made, the sets need not link in the usual sense, but can link weakly. We show that any two sets link weakly if they would link had one of them been contained in a finite dimensional subspace. We give several examples. There are many applications. We present one here.
