Abstract:In this paper, we study the diophantine equation σ_2(n)-n^2=An+B. We prove that except for finitely many computable solutions, all the solutions to this equation with (A,B)=(L_2m,F_2m^2-1) are n=F_2k+1F_2k+2m+1, where both F_2k+1 and F_2k+2m+1 are Fibonacci primes. Meanwhile, we show that the twin primes conjecture holds if and only if the equation σ_2(n)-n^2=2n+5 has infinitely many solutions.

Abstract:This article demonstrates that every sufficiently large odd integer can be expressed as the sum of one square of a prime, six cubes of primes, and 23 powers of two. This finding represents an improvement on the previous results of Sinnadurai in 1965 and Hooley in 1981.

Abstract:We mainly introduce two new kinds of numbers given by R-n = Sigma(n)(k=0) ((n)(k)) ((n + k)(k)) 1/2k - 1 (n = 0,1,2,...), S-n = Sigma(n)(k=0) ((n)(k))(2) ((2k)(k)) (2k + 1) (n = 0,1,2,...). We find that such numbers have many interesting arithmetic properties. For example, if p 1 (mod 4) is a prime with p = x(2 )+ y(2) (where x 1 (mod 4) and y 0 (mod 2)), then R(p-1)/2 p - (-1)((p-1)/4)2x ( mod p(2)). Also, 1/n(2) Sigma(n-1)(k=0) S-k is an element of Z and 1/n Sigma(n-1)(k=0) S-k(x) is an element of Z[x] for all n = 1,2,..., where S-k(x) = Sigma(k)(j=0) ((k)(j))(2) ((2j)(j)) (2j + 1)x(j). For any positive integers a and n, we show that, somewhat surprisingly, 1/n(2) Sigma(n-1)(k=0)(2k + 1) ((n - 1)(k))(a) ((-n - 1)(k))(a) is an element of Z and 1/n Sigma(n-1)(k=0) ((n - 1)(k))(a) ((-n - 1)(k))(a)/4k(2) - 1 is an element of Z. We also solve a conjecture of V. J. W. Guo and J. Zeng, and pose several conjectures for further research.

Abstract:For each positive integer n , if the sum of the factors of n is divided by n , then the result is called the abundancy index of n . If the abundancy index of some positive integer m equals the abundancy index of n but m is not equal to n , then m and n are called friends. A positive integer with no friends is called solitary. The smallest positive integer that is not known to have a friend and is not known to be solitary is 10. It is not known if the number 6 has odd friends, that is, if odd perfect numbers exist. In a 2007 article, Nielsen proved that the number of nonidentical prime factors in any odd perfect number is at least 9. A 2015 article by Nielsen, which was more complicated and used a computer program that took months to complete, increased the lower bound from 9 to 10. This work applies methods from Nielsen's 2007 article to show that each friend of 10 has at least 10 nonidentical prime factors. This is a formal write-up of results presented at the Southern Africa Mathematical Sciences Association Conference 2023 at the University of Pretoria.

Abstract:To answer the question "Is $10$ a solitary number?", we have established a necessary and sufficient condition on primes $p$ and $q$ so that $p$ divides $\sigma(q^{2a})$($a\in\mathbb{Z^+}$). Also We have found the form of $q$ whenever $p$ divides $\sigma(q^{2a})$ for $q>p$ . Using these two, we have proved that if $n$ is a friend of $10$ then it is an odd square with at least seven distinct prime factors, $5$ being the least one. Moreover there exists a prime factor $p$ of $n$ such that $2a+1\equiv 0 \pmod f$ where $f$ is the smallest odd positive integer greater than $1$ and less than or equal to $\min\{ 2a+1,p-1\}$ such that $5^{f}\equiv 1 \pmod p$, provided $5^{2a}\mid \mid n$, $a\in \mathbb{Z^+}$. Further, there exist prime factors $p$ and $q$ not necessarily distinct of $n$ such that $p\equiv1 \pmod {10}$ and $q\equiv 1\pmod 6$. Besides, we have proved that if a Fermat prime $F_k$ divides $n$ then $n$ must have a prime factor congruent to $1$ modulo $2F_k$.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some new problems in additive combinatorics.Our problems mainly involve permutations (or circular permutations) n distinct numbers (or elements of an additive abelian group) a1,…,an with adjacent sums ai + ai+1 (or differences ai-ai+1) pairwise distinct.For an odd prime power q =2n + 1 ＞ 13 with q ≠ 25,we show that there is a circular permutation (a1,…,an) of the elements of S={a2 : a∈(F)q\{0}} such that {a1+a2,…,an-1+an,an+a1} =S,where (F)q denotes the field of order q.For any finite subset A of an additive torsion-free abelian group G with |A| =n ＞ 3,we prove that there is a numbering a1,…,an of the elements of A such that a1 + 2a2,a2 + 2a3,…,an-1 + 2an,an + 2a1 are pairwise distinct.We also pose 30 open conjectures for further research.

Abstract:Suppose that $n$ is $0$ or $4$ modulo $6$. We show that there are infinitely many primes of the form $p^2 + nq^2$ with both $p$ and $q$ prime, and obtain an asymptotic for their number. In particular, when $n = 4$ we verify the `Gaussian primes conjecture' of Friedlander and Iwaniec. We study the problem using the method of Type I/II sums in the number field $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. The main innovation is in the treatment of the Type II sums, where we make heavy use of two recent developments in the theory of Gowers norms in additive combinatorics: quantitative versions of so-called concatenation theorems, due to Kuca and to Kuca--Kravitz-Leng, and the quasipolynomial inverse theorem of Leng, Sah and the second author.

Abstract:For n = 1, 2, 3, ... define S(n) as the smallest integer m > 1 such that those 2k(k - 1) mod m for k = 1, ... , n are pairwise distinct; we show that S(n) is the least prime greater than 2n - 2 and hence the value set of the function S(n) is exactly the set of all prime numbers. For every n = 4, 5, ... , we prove that the least prime p > 3n with p equivalent to 1 (mod 3) is just the least positive integer m such that 18k(3k - 1) (k = 1, ... , n) are pairwise distinct modulo m. For d is an element of {4, 6, 12} and n = 3, 4, ... , we show that the least prime p >= 2n - 1 with p equivalent to -1 (mod d) is the smallest integer m such that those (2k - 1)(d) for k = 1, ... , n are pairwise distinct modulo m. We also pose several challenging conjectures on primes. For example, we find a surprising recurrence for primes, namely, for every n = 10, 11, ... the (n + 1)-th prime p(n+1) is just the least positive integer m such that 2s(k)(2) (k = 1, ..., n) are pairwise distinct modulo m where s(k) = Sigma(k)(j=1) (-1)(k-j) p(j). We also conjecture that for any positive integer m there are consecutive primes p(k), ... , p(n) (k < n) not exceeding 2m + 2.2 root m such that m = p(n) - p(n-1) + ... + (-1)(n-k) p(k). Abstract:We determine all square-free odd positive integers n such that the 2-Selmer groups Sn and Ŝn of the elliptic curve En: y2 = x(x − n)(x − 2n) and its dual curve Ên: y2 = x3 + 6nx2 + n2x have the smallest size: Sn = {1}, Ŝn = {1, 2, n, 2n}. It is well known that for such integer n, the rank of group En(ℚ) of the rational points on En is zero so that n is a non-congruent number. In this way we obtain many new series of elliptic curves En with rank zero and such series of integers n are non-congruent numbers.
