Abstract:The variation of the I-1/I-3 ratio of the fluorescence of pyrene in polystyrene-based quaternary ammonium salt (PA) and sodium carboxymethylamylose (NaCMA) aqueous solutions was measured as a function of sodium perfluorooctanoate (SPFO) concentration. Association of the anionic fluorocarbon surfactant with cationic polyelectrolyte (PA) to form mixed micelles occurred at the surfactant concentrations far below its normal critical concentration, while no interaction between SPFO and anionic polyelectrolyte (NaCMA) was detected. The driving force for the formation of mixed micelles of SPFO and PA is electrostatic interactions.

Abstract:Effect of the concentration of water-soluble polyanion (sodium carboxymethylcellulose, NaCMC) on the interaction between a cationic surfactant (1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, C(12)mimBr) and NaCMC in aqueous solution has been studied by isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC), conductivity, surface tension, and rheological measurements. From the surfactant/polymer interacting enthalpy, it can be deduced that the electrostatic attraction between the cationic surfactant and anionic polyelectrolyte causes an endothermic process, and the C(12)mimBr monomers binding to the NaCMC chains to form micelle-like aggregates through hydrophobic interaction is an exothermic process. Increasing the NaCMC concentration causes the interaction between C(12)mimBr and NaCMC to decrease, and the characteristic surfactant concentrations, including the critical aggregation surfactant concentration (CAC), the surfactant concentration to form free micelles (C-m), and the saturation concentration of surfactant on the NaCMC chains (C-S) to increase. Because of the strong electrostatic interaction between C12mimBr and NaCMC, the formation of C(12)mimBr/NaCMC complexes can lead to precipitation or redissolution depending on solution composition, so the critical precipitation concentration (C-P) and the onset of a redissolution concentration (C-R) has been determined by the electrical conductivity. The rheological results reveal a dramatic increase in solution viscosity around the CAC, attributed to interpolymer cross-linking through the formation of mixed micelles involving the carboxylic acid groups of NaCMC and the surfactant.

Abstract:Abstract The interactions between the long-chain ionic liquid of 1-methyl-3-tetradecylimidazolium bromide (C14mimBr) and five polymers have been studied in detail using surface tension, electric conductivity, isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC), and steady-state fluorescence methods. The polymers used include neutral polymers of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), triblock copolymers of PEO13PPO30PEO13 (L64) and PEO79PPO30PEO79 (F68), and polyelectrolyte of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC). This paper focuses on the effects of polymer concentration and type on the surfactant-polymer interactions. The curves in the absence and in the presence of the polymer have more or less differences, exhibiting the cooperative interaction of the surfactant and five polymers. Although the effects of each polymer addition on the surfactant aggregates can be proved by various techniques, for one system, the inflection points on the curves from different method are difficult to unify and an attempt to show the concurrence of the data is only diluting the essence of this area. It is concluded that the interacting intensity between C14mimBr and the polymer has the order of NaCMC > L64 >F68 >PVA > PEG, which is determined by the strong electrostatic attraction, relatively strong hydrophobic interaction, and/or weak ion-dipole interaction relating to the polymer structure. Due to the precipitation formation of NaCMC and cationic surfactant aqueous solution, copolymers especially the existence of PPO chain not only has a good synergistic effect with surfactant, but also can adjust the viscosity of the system. Abstract:Properties of mixed surfactants containing ionic liquid surfactant are investigated in this paper. The other surfactants mixed with C(12)mimBr are several common surfactants, including Gemini 12-3-12, DTAB and SDS. Both of Rubingh-Margules model and Rubingh-regular solution model are used to calculate the critical micelle concentration and the composition of mixed micelle. It is observed that molecular structure and interaction between the charged head groups have great effects on the properties of mixed surfactants. The mixed behavior Of C(12)mimBr and Gemini 12-3-12 with great difference in the molecular structure is non-ideal, while it is almost ideal for mixture Of C(12)mimBr and DTAB with the same hydrophobic chain length and different hydrophilic head group only. Due to the strong attractive interaction between the opposite charged head groups, of course the mixed behavior Of C(12)mimBr and SDS is absolutely non-ideal. Moreover, results of the micelle composition from the two models are almost the same; however, the prediction result of the critical micelle concentration is obviously better from Rubingh-Margules model than from Rubingh-regular solution model.

Abstract:The interactions of a hydrophobic modified thermosensitive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-ran-poly(methacrylic acid)-ran-poly(octadecyl acrylate) with five ionic surfactants, namely, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecayltrimethylaminium bromide (DTAB), 1,2-bis(dodecyldimethylammonio)- hexane dibromide (12-6-12), 1-dodecanaminium, N,N '-[(1,4-dioxo-1,4-butanediyl) bis(oxy-2,1-ethanediyl)] bis[N,N-dimethyl-, bromide] (12-su-12), and dodecanaminium, N, N '-[[(2E)-1,4-dioxo-2-butene-1, 4-diyl]bis(o-xy-2,1ethanediy-l)] bis[N,N-dimethyl-, bromide] (12-fo-12) were investigated by the static-steady fluorescence methods using crystal violet and pyrene as the probes. It was found that the SDS interacted with the polymer driven by the hydrophobic interaction, while the cationic surfactants first entered the core of the polymer micelle through the hydrophobic interaction then the corona area of the polymer micelle through the hydrophobic and static electrical interactions. Measurements of the transmittances of the polymer/surfactants/PBS mixtures at different temperatures showed that the SDS suppressed the phase transition of the system, while additions of the cationic surfactants into the polymer induced the phase transitions of the polymer complex systems first, then suppressed them after the minimum values of the lower critical phase transition temperatures (LPTT) was reached. It was also found that increase of the MAA content in the polymer could broaden the LPTT range adjusted by the cationic surfactants.
Surfactant structure effects on binding with oppositely charged polyelectrolytes observed by fluorescence of a pyrene probe and label

Abstract:Poly(2-(acrylamido)-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) and three copolymers containing about 40 mol% of AMPS and N,N-dimethylacrylamide with a single label of naphthalene or pyrene and with both labels were synthesized. The binding of cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), and nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) on these anionic polyelectrolytes was observed in dilute aqueous solutions with the relative emission intensity of excimer to monomer, I E/I m, of cationic probe 1-pyrenemethylamine hydrochloride (PyMeA·HCl), the nonradiative energy transfer (NRET), I Py/I Np, between the labels, the emission intensity ratio, I 1/I 3, of the first peak to the third peak and the fluorescence anisotropy, r, of the pyrene label. The binding with cationic surfactants made the polyelectrolyte chains much curlier, leading to an increase in I E/I M and I Py/I Np. The intermolecular NRET occurred at higher CTAB concentrations owing to the hydrophobic aggregation between CTAB tails bound on different polyelectrolyte chains, which induced an increase in r of the pyrene label. No intermolecular aggregation was observed from the intermolecular NRET and r of the pyrene label for DTAC-bound polyelectrolytes owing to its weaker hydrophobicity of 12 carbon atoms in the tail, shorter than that of CTAB. As shown with constant values of the previously mentioned photophysical parameters of the labels with increasing C12E8 concentration, there was no obvious binding for C12E8 on the anionic polyelectrolytes. However, the presence of PAMPS promoted the micelle formation for C12E8 below its critical micelle concentration as detected by the excimer emission of PyMeA·HCl probe.

Abstract:In the present study, the structure and morphology of single sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) molecules adsorbed to mica surface from the natural aqueous solution is investigated using atomic force microscopy technique. Results show that single PSS molecules are observed which show a morphology of wormlike coils. Meanwhile, single sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) complexes deposited on mica from the air–water interface are also observed. However, the PSS/CTA + complexes show different conformations by appearing in the morphology of circular patches. Experimental data are in fair agreement with the theoretical analysis.
Interaction Between Two Homologues of Cationic Surface Active Ionic Liquids and the PEO-PPO-PEO Triblock Copolymers in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:The interaction of nonionic triblock copolymers of poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) and poly(propyleneoxide) (PPO) (PEOnPPOmPEOn) with a series of cationic surface-active ionic liquids in aqueous solutions have been investigated. The cationic surface-active ionic liquids include 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (CnmimBr, n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) and N-alkyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bromide (CnMPB, n = 12, 14, 16). For different polymer-surfactant systems, the critical aggregation surfactant concentration (cac), the surfactant concentration to form free micelles (C m), and the saturation concentration of surfactant on the polymer chains (C 2) were determined using isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC) and conductivity measurements. The structure of the formed aggregates depended strongly on the hydrophobicity of the surfactant and the ratio of polymer/surfactant concentration. For C8mimBr, there were not any micelle-like surfactant–polymer clusters detected in the solution, and only micelles appeared. For other surfactants, the polymer–surfactant aggregates were formed in the solution, which was verified by the appearance of a broad endothermic peak in the ITC thermograms. The intensity of polymer–surfactant interaction increased with the hydrophobicity of the surfactants and the polymers but was not affected by the surfactant headgroups.
Effects of Nonionic Surfactant and Salts on the Interactions Between Oppositely Charged Star-Shaped Copolymer and Ionic Surfactant in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:The interaction between star-shaped copolymer poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-b-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) (CDPDPM) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solutions are investigated by using fluorescence and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The effects of nonionic surfactant dodecyl β-D-maltopyranoside (C12G2) and salts including inorganic salt ammonium bromide (NH4Br) and organic salt tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (Bu4NBr) on the interaction between CDPDPM and SDS have been explored systematically. The results have suggested that SDS molecules can bind on CDPDPM by electrostatic interaction between the positively charged CDPDPM and negatively charged SDS and thus weaken the binding ability of CDPDPM to water molecules. CDPDPM exhibits temperature-responsive aggregation behavior in aqueous solution gradually with the increase of SDS concentration and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) decreases correspondingly. The introduction of nonionic surfactant C12G2 changes the interaction between CDPDPM and SDS significantly by participate the formation of complexes and the stability of the CDPDPM/SDS complexes declines leading to the chance of forming larger complexes is deprived at higher temperature. The addition of NH4Br to the CDPDPM/SDS system can retard the binding of SDS on the polymer chains because of electrostatic shielding. Correspondingly, LCST is higher and the formed aggregates are smaller. For CDPDPM/Bu4NBr/SDS system, the phenomenon is similar to that of the CDPDPM/C12G2/SDS system. This should be attributed to the nature of Bu4N+, possesses not only positive charges but also certain hydrophobicity, and thus Bu4N+ has the ability to participate and facilitate the formation of SDS micelles. Obviously, the LCST of the mixed system can be tailored by adjusting the system composition on purpose.
Interactions of Two Homologues of Cationic Surface Active Ionic Liquids with Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:In the preceding paper of this series, we studied the interactions of copolymers with the ionic liquids, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C n mimBr, n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) and N-alkyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bromide (C n MPB, n = 12, 14, 16). An obvious difference was detected between the interaction mechanism and the alkyl chain length of the surfactant. In the present study, we performed a systematic study on the interaction of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) with ionic liquids in aqueous solution by isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC), conductivity, turbidity, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The existence of electrostatic attraction between NaCMC and ILs could increase the complexity of these systems. The results show that the monomers of C8mimBr can bind to the NaCMC chains and form free surfactant micelles in the solution, while no micelle-like C8mimBr/NaCMC cluster is detected. For other surfactants, the formation of surfactant/NaCMC clusters in the solution is driven by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, which could be divided into two types. One type is the polymer-induced surfactant/NaCMC complexes that form in the solution for the surfactant of C n mimBr (n = 10, 12, 14) or C n MPB (n = 12, 14). The other type is that the surfactant-induced surfactant/NaCMC complexes come into being for the surfactant of C16mimBr or C16MPB. Finally, the different modes of complex formation proposed have a good interpretation of the experiment results, unraveling the details of the effect of surfactant alkyl chain length and headgroup on the surfactant–NaCMC interactions.
Study on the Interaction Between Cationic Gemini Surfactant and Anionic Polyelectrolyte

Abstract:The interactions between cationic gemini surfactant hexylene-1,6-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium) dibromide (C12H25(CH3)(2)N-(CH2)(6)-N(CH3)(2)C12H25 center dot 2Br) (12-6-12 center dot 2Br(-)) and oppositely charged polyelectrolyte poly(arylic acid, sodium salt) (NaPA) have been studied by using fluorescence and conductivity measurements. It was shown that micelle-like aggregate or complex could be formed between the gemini surfactant (12-6-12 center dot 2Br(-)) and polyelectrolyte NaPA due to the static electric interaction. Comparing the fluorescence spectrum of system of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMAB) with NaPA and that of system of gemini surfactant (12-6-12 center dot 2Br(-)) and NaPA, it could be found that the interaction between gemini surfactant (12-6-12 center dot 2Br(-)) and NaPA was stronger than that between DTMAB and NaPA. It could be also found that the salt and alcohol are favorable to the formation of the micelle-like aggregate and the re-dissolvation of the complex.
Interactions of Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate with 1-Octyl-3-methylimidazolium Bromide in Aqueous Solution: Conductometric, Spectroscopic and Density Functional Theory Studies

Abstract:Conductivity measurements were performed for aqueous mixtures of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (NaPSS) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([OMIm]Br) at 288.15, 298.15 and 308.15 K. Scaling theory is used for the description of the electrical conductance of the polyelectrolytes. The results indicate that the fraction of uncondensed counterions is decreased by increasing the temperature or concentration of [OMIm]Br. Conductivity measurements for 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide were performed in aqueous solutions of sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Data analysis was performed using the Quint–Viallard conductivity equation and the low concentration chemical model. Limiting molar conductivities of [OMIm]Br (Λ0) and the association constant (KA) were determined. The molar conductivity of [OMIm]Br in aqueous solutions of NaPSS increased with increasing temperature. Values of activation energy for viscous flow are higher than the values of activation enthalpy of charge transport; therefore, it can be concluded that, in addition to ion transfer, the formation and breaking of hydrogen bonds is responsible for a portion of the charge transfer. The results of UV–Vis spectroscopic and quantum chemical calculations confirmed the existence of hydrogen bonding between [OMIm]+ and [PSS]–.

Interaction of sulfonated polystyrene with cationic surfactants in aqueous solution

Abstract:The interaction of sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) with cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and myristyl trimethylammonium bromide (MTAB) in aqueous solution was investigated. It was found that the solution viscosity increases rapidly at the molar ratio of CTAB/-SO3Na = 0.5 or MTAB/-SO3Na = 0.6 (the first viscosity maximum) and CTAB/-SO3Na = ∼1.5 or MTAB/-SO3Na = 2.0 (the second viscosity maximum). Both the first and the second viscosity maxima are related closely with the hydrophobic domains formed in solution, which can be detected using methyl orange as a spectral probe or N,N-dimethylamino flavone as fluorescent probe. In the higher concentration of [SPS], such as >0.05 M (-SO3Na unit), the SPS/CTAB solution converts to gel suddenly at CTAB/-SO3Na = ∼1.5–1.7 region, but with a further addition of CTAB or SPS, the gel collapses quickly. A term “micelle crosslinking” was proposed to explain the conversion of solution/gel and the reversible nature of gel ↔ solution.
Interaction Between Zwitterionic Surface Activity Ionic Liquid and Anionic Surfactant: Na+-Driven Wormlike Micelles

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of the mixed zwitterionic surface activity ionic liquid/anionic surfactant (N-alkyl-N'-carboxymethyl imidazolium inner salts/sodium dodecyl sulfate, [N-C(12), N'-CO(2)-Im]/SDS) at various molar ratios (R(1) = C([N-C(12),N'-CO(2)-Im])/(C([N-C(12),N'-CO(2)-Im]) + C(SDS)) were investigated by surface tension and steady-state fluorescence measurements. The results show that the mixed [N-C(12), N'-CO(2)-Im]/SDS system has a much lower cmc value and higher surface activity than individual surfactant. Compared with the mixed zwitterionic betaine surfactant/SDS system, the mixture studied exhibits a stronger synergism, i.e., more negative interaction parameters (β(m) and β(σ)). Through addition of NaCl, the wormlike micelles (WMs) could be formed in a [N-C(12), N'-CO(2)-Im]/SDS system. Steady and dynamic rheology was employed to characterize the WMs with different surfactant ratio (R(1)), NaCl concentration, and temperature. An optimal composition, viz., C(T) = 60 mM, R(1) = 0.45, and C(NaCl) = 0.10 M, was detected to form the strongest and longest wormlike micelles. Compared with the WMs formed by a traditional zwitterionic C(12) betaine/anionic surfactant mixture (e.g., laurylamidopropyl betaine/SDS), the WMs studied have a stronger network structure, which is expected to have potential applications in some fields, such as in nanomaterials synthesis, personal care products, and flooding liquid for tertiary oil recovery.

Abstract:Binding and phase behavior of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants were studied in aqueous bulk solutions and at air-water interfaces. In particular, we have investigated the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) and the cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{12}$TAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{14}$TAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C$_{16}$TAB). In order to reveal surfactant/polyelectrolyte binding, aggregation and phase separation of the mixtures, we have varied the NaPSS concentration systematically and have kept the surfactants concentration fixed. Information on the behavior in the bulk solution was gained by electrophoretic mobility and turbidity measurements, while the surface properties were interrogated with surface tension and sum-frequency generation (SFG). This has enabled us to relate bulk to interfacial properties with respect to the charging state and the surfactants' binding efficiency. We found that the latter two are strongly dependent on the alkyl chain length of the surfactant and that binding is much more efficient as the alkyl chain length of the surfactant increases. This also results in a different phase behavior as shown by turbidity measurements of the bulk solutions. Charge neutral aggregates that are forming in the bulk ad-sorb to the air-water interface, an effect that is likely caused by the increased hydrophobicity of C$_\text{n}$TAB/PSS complexes. This conclusion is corroborated by SFG spectroscopy, where we observe a decrease in the intensity of OH stretching bands, which is indicative for a decrease in surface charging and the formation of interfaces with negligible net charge. Particularly at mixing ratios that are in the equilibrium two-phase region, we observe weak OH intensities and thus surface charging.

Abstract:The self-assembly and phase separation of mixtures of polyelectrolytes and surfactants are important to a range of applications, from formulating personal care products to drug encapsulation. In contrast to systems of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems the surfactants micellize into structures that are highly responsive to solution conditions. In this work, we examine how the morphology of micelles and degree of polyelectrolyte adsorption dynamically change upon varying the mixing ratio of charged and neutral surfactants. Specifically, we consider a solution of the cationic polyelectrolyte polydiallyldimethylammonium, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate, neutral ethoxylated surfactants (C[Formula: see text]EO[Formula: see text]), sodium chloride salt, and water. To capture the chemical specificity of these species, we leverage recent developments in constructing molecularly informed field theories via coarse-graining from all-atom simulations. Our results show how changing the surfactant mixing ratios and the identity of the nonionic surfactant modulates micelle size and surface charge, and as a result dictates the degree of polyelectrolyte adsorption. These results are in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental observations on the same system.
Salt Effect on the Complex Formation Between 1-Dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium Bromide and Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Complex formation between sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C12mimBr) has been studied by isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC), turbidimetric titration, and the surface tension measurements at varied concentrations of NaBr. The addition of salt is found to influence the formation of C12mimBr/NaCMC complexes markedly. At CNaBr<0.20M, C12mimBr forms micelle-like aggregates with the NaCMC polymer chains to form C12mimBr/NaCMC complexes above the critical aggregate surfactant concentration (C1). Free C12mimBr micelles are formed at Cm before the saturation concentration of surfactant on the NaCMC chains (C2). However, when CNaBr>0.20M, there is no polyelectrolyte/surfactant complex formation because of complete salt screening of the electrostatic attraction between C12mimBr micelles and the NaCMC chains. Additionally, the addition of salt to a system of 0.01g/L NaCMC and fixed C12mimBr concentration induces the formation of C12mimBr/NaCMC complexes when CNaBr<0.20M, and dissociates the complexes at CNaBr>0.20M. The salt effect on complex formation is explained as the result of a competition between the screening interaction (the addition of NaBr screens the electrostatic attraction between surfactant headgroups and stabilizes surfactant micelles) and the increasing interaction (the addition of NaBr compresses the diffusive electric double layers and hence reduces the repulsion between the surfactant heads and carboxylate groups).
Interactions between Ionic Surfactants and Polysaccharides in Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:Methylcellulose (MC), chitosan (CS), and K-carrageenan (KC) are chosen as typical representatives of neutral and positively, and negatively charged polysaccharides, respectively. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) are chosen as anionic and cationic surfactants, respectively. From these polymers and surfactants, six combinations of polymer-surfactant are made: MC-SDS, MC-CTAB, CS-SDS, CS-CTAB, KC-SDS, and KC-CTAB. The polymer-surfactant interactions for the six pairs are systematically investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). It was observed that MC-SDS exhibited strong hydrophobic interaction, as evidenced by the endothermic peak, followed by a weak ion-dipole interaction. KC-SDS did not show any ionic interaction, as expected, but exhibited weaker hydrophobic interaction than MC-SDS. Strong ionic interaction was found for CS-SDS, followed by hydrophobic interaction between some hydrophobic moieties of CS and SDS tails. Titration of CTAB with MC resulted in a pattern of polymer-surfactant interaction similar to that for the titration of CTAB with CS. KC showed strong interaction with CTAB by largely reducing the high endothermic enthalpy changes caused by the demicellization of CTAB. A general rule that determines the order (or priority) for a surfactant to bind to a polymer has been proposed based on our experimental results and discussion.
BINDING OF IONIC SURFACTANTS ON OPPOSITELY CHARGED POLYELECTROLYTES OBSERVED BY FLUORESCENCE METHODS

Abstract:Our recent studies concerning the binding of ionic surfactants on oppositely charged polyelectrolytes observed with fluorescence techniques are reviewed. The cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC), and nonionic surfactant octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E8) were allowed to bind on anionic poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) and its pyrene and/or naphthalene labeled copolymers. The relative excimer emission intensity I-E/I-M of a cationic probe 1-pyrenemethylamine hydrochloride (PyMeA(.)HCl) and the non-radiative energy transfer (NRET) I-Pv/INp of naphthalene to pyrene for labeled polyelectrolytes were chosen to monitor the binding process and the conformation change of surfactant-bound polyelectrolytes. The 1:1 aggregation of polyelectrolyte-CTAB with respect to the charge was found as long as the CTAB concentration was slightly higher than its critical aggregation concentration (CAC). The intermolecular NRET indicated that the CTAB-bound polyelectrolytes aggregated together through the hydrophobic interaction between the CTAB tails. However, neither 1:1 polyelectrolyte-DTAC aggregation nor intermolecular aggregation of DTAC-bound polyelectrolyte was observed owing to its weaker hydrophobicity of 12 carbon atoms in the tail, which is shorter than that of CTAB. As known from the fluorescence results, nonionic surfactant C12E8 did not bind on the anionic polyelectrolytes, but the presence of PAMPS promoted the micelle formation for C12E8 at the CAC slightly below its critical micelle concentration (CMC). The solid complex of dansyl labeled AMPS copolymer-surfactant exhibited a decrease in local polarity with increasing charge density of the polyelectrolyte or with alkane tail length of the surfactant. SAXS suggested a lamella structure for the AMPS copolymer-surfactant solid complexes with a long period of 3.87 nm for CTAB and 3.04 nm for DTAC, respectively.

Abstract:The complex formation between sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) at various sodium bromide concentrations (C(NaBr)) has been studied by microcalorimetry, turbidimetric titration, steady-state fluorescence measurements, and the fluorescence polarization technique. The addition of salt is found to influence the formation of NaCMC/DTAB complexes markedly. At C(NaBr) = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.10, and 0.20 M, DTAB monomers form micelle-like aggregates on NaCMC chains to form NaCMC/DTAB complexes above the critical surfactant concentration (C1). At C(NaBr) = 0.23 M, DTAB molecules first form micelles above a 2.46 mM DTAB concentration prompted by the added salt, and then, above C1 = 4.40 mM, these micelles can aggregate with NaCMC chains to form NaCMC/DTAB complexes. However, at C(NaBr) = 0.25 M, there is no NaCMC/DTAB complex formation because of the complete salt screening of the electrostatic attraction between DTAB micelles and NaCMC chains. It is also surprisingly found that the addition of NaBr can bring out a decrease in C1 at C(NaBr) < 0.20 M. Moreover, the addition of NaBr to a mixture of 0.01 g/L NaCMC and 3.6 mM DTAB can directly induce the formation of NaCMC/DTAB complexes. This salt-enhancing effect on the complex formation is explained as the result of competition between the screening of interaction of polyelectrolyte with surfactant and the increasing of polyelectrolyte/surfactant interaction owing to the growth of micelles by added salt. When the increasing of polyelectrolyte/surfactant interaction exceeds the screening of interaction, the complex formation can be enhanced.
