Abstract:Harmful effects of pollutants on the ecosystem and humans are very complexes and cannot be assessed only by standard chemical analyses of environmental samples; therefore biological methods are needed as useful complementary approaches. Although chemical analyses can identify that many contaminants may be present in the ecosystem, biological methods such as DNA damage detection, enzyme activities determination serve as direct way to provide human data on internal exposure and early effects for a more precise and realistic risk assessment. Many different biological methods based on native or genetically modified microorganisms as test-species, have already successfully been applied to environmental toxicity/genotoxicity assessment. The present article reviews the applications of biomonitoring methods through different cases in conjunction with chemical analyses and provides a better understanding on the best method for environmental monitoring. Data analyses in this article showed that DNA damage detection when is combined with chemical analyses can provide more information on ecosystem health. Also determination of different enzyme activities is a useful tool for environmental monitoring. However all of those biological methods (DNA damage and enzyme activities) were used as complementary approaches to chemical analyses of the ecosystem. Comparison of combined biological and chemical analyses method to biological methods showed weakness in biological methods to provide more information on ecosystem health, while a combined method demonstrated a very strong tool for environmental monitoring. © Research India Publications.
