Abstract:Analysis of spatial and temporal variation in water quality and the identification of pollution sources in river basins are very important for the protection and sustainable management of water resources. In this study, several statistical methods, including cluster analysis, the seasonal Kendall test, factor analysis /principal component analysis and principal component regression, were used to evaluate the spatio-temporal variation of water quality and to identify the main sources of pollution in the Zhangweinan River basin. Results of the spatial cluster analysis and principal component analysis indicated that the Zhangweinan River basin can be classified into two regions. One is the upper reaches of the Zhang River, located in the northwest of the Zhangweinan River basin where water quality is good. The other covers the Wei River and the eastern plain of the Zhangweinan River basin, where water is seriously polluted. In this region, water quality is severely impacted by point source inputs to the river. Results of temporal cluster analysis indicated that the study period (2001-2009) may be classified into three periods. The first period was from 2002 to 2003, during which water quality deteriorated and serious pollution was observed in the Wei River basin and eastern plain of the Zhangweinan River basin. The second period was from 2004 to 2006, during which water quality was improved. The third period was from 2007 to 2009, during which water quality was improved greatly. Despite the fact that water quality in the Zhangweinan River basin was improved during the period from 2004 to 2009, water quality in the Wei River (southwestern part of the basin), the Wei Canal River and the Zhangweixin River (eastern plain of the basin) remained poor. Principal component analysis and multi-linear regression of the absolute principal component scores showed that the main sources of pollutants to the Zhangweinan River basin were point source discharges, for example, wastewater from heavy and chemical industries, municipal sewage and mine drainage from upstream. Non-point source pollution from agriculture and runoff, generated in heavy rainfall, also had a significant impact on water quality in the Zhangweinan River basin during flood seasons. Additionally, receptor modeling, through multi-linear regression of the absolute principal component scores (APCS-MLR), was used to estimate the contributions from the identified pollution sources to each water quality variable. These results will provide useful information for better pollution control strategies in the Zhangweinan River basin.
