Abstract:Pre-adsorption is increasingly recognized as a cost-effective and viable method to diminish the concentration and toxicity of organics in coal gasification wastewater (CGW), thereby enhancing its biodegradability. In this study, we employed excess sludge for the pre-treatment of CGW, capitalizing on the superior adsorptive capabilities of its extracellular polymer substances (EPS). Our findings revealed that at a neutral pH of 7, the removal efficiencies for COD and NH 3 -N in CGW reached 20.4% and 15.1%, respectively. These results aligned best with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, boasting maximum adsorption capacities of 255.21 and 6.33 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the pre-adsorption using excess sludge not only bolstered the biodegradability of CGW but also mitigated its toxicity. Notably, the biological oxygen demand (BOD)/chemical oxygen demand (COD) ratio ascended from 0.32 to 0.35 after adsorption, oxygen uptake rate (OUR) inhibition rate (OIR) was curtailed to 45.29%, the toxicity unit (TU) value was reduced to 19.1, and nitrification inhibition rate (NIR) diminished by 16.02%. This pre-treatment method proved particularly adept at removing organic compounds with benzene rings, especially phenols, from CGW. Characterization analyses, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealed that carbonyl groups and π-bonds within the EPS were instrumental in the adsorption of NH 3 -N. Concurrently, phenolic compounds predominantly formed π-π interactions with EPS. Collectively, this research illuminates a promising avenue for the anaerobic front-end pre-treatment of CGW.
