To extend the new operation LIKE in formal SQL language, the shape representation and measurement have to be built. This study aims at polygon object offering a Fourier transform based method to compute the degree of shape similarity. Through cognition experiment builds the membership function of fuzzy term LIKE. The query experiments show the shape based query retrieves the building result consistent with human cognition.

Abstract:This study proposes a template matching simplification method from the perspective of shape cognition based on the typical template characteristics of building distributions and representations. The method first formulates a series of templates to abstract the building shape by generalizing their polygons and analyzing their symbolic meanings, then conducts the simplification by searching and matching the most similar template that can be used later to replace the original building. On the premise of satisfying the individual geometric accuracy on a smaller scale, the proposed method can enhance the impression of well-known landmarks and reflect the pattern in mapping areas by the symbolic template. The turning function that describes shape by measuring the changes of the tangent-angle as a function of the arc-length is employed to obtain the similar distance between buildings and template polygons, and the least squares model is used to control the geometry matching of the candidate template. Experiments on real datasets are carried out to assess the usefulness of this method and compare it with two existing methods. The experiments suggest that our method can preserve the main structure of building shapes and geometric accuracy.

Abstract:This paper introduces a simple yet effective shape analysis mechanism for geometry processing. Unlike traditional shape analysis techniques which compute descriptors per surface point up to certain neighborhoods, we introduce a shape analysis framework in which the descriptors are based on pairs of surface points. Such a pairwise analysis approach leads to a new class of shape descriptors that are more global, discriminative, and can effectively capture the variations in the underlying geometry. Specifically, we introduce new shape descriptors based on the isocurves of harmonic functions whose global maximum and minimum occur at the point pair. We show that these shape descriptors can infer shape structures and consistently lead to simpler and more efficient algorithms than the state-of-the-art methods for three applications: intrinsic reflectional symmetry axis computation, matching shape extremities, and simultaneous surface segmentation and skeletonization.

Abstract:The representation and analysis of building patterns are critical for characterizing urban scenes and making decisions in urban planning. The evaluation of building patterns is a difficult spatial analysis problem that exhibits properties of symbolization, homogeneity and regularity. Open issues in this field include the development of approaches for representing building patterns and vector-based methods for computing various pattern metrics. In the image analysis domain, there are many methods for pattern recognition e.g., texture analysis, but there are few corresponding solutions for vector data. The aim of this research is to develop several building pattern metrics and offer a texton co-occurrence matrix TCM-based method to quantitatively evaluate the features of building patterns. The procedure first constructs a spatial field based on a Delaunay triangulation skeleton to partition a set of buildings into a set of tessellation cells. The tessellations of building clusters have a similar structure as image representations, in that each cell corresponds to an image pixel. We then use the texton analysis to establish a matrix to describe the tessellation structure, including the neighboring relationships and individual attribute information. Finally, a set of feature descriptors is obtained from the TCM to capture the texture-related information of building groups. Through experiments on building pattern analysis and spatial queries, we show that the results of TCM-based evaluation of building patterns are consistent with those of human cognition.

Abstract:Shape similarity between buildings is useful for building matching, classification, retrieval, etc. As buildings tend to be designed with square angles, we proposed a method to measure shape similarity for buildings with multiple orthogonal features based on Needleman-Wunsch (NW) and Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithms. While encoding building shape into a sequence, adjacent two angles are taken as codes. Type, angle and length characteristics of the codes are described, and their similarity are then defined. NW and SW algorithms are applied to compute similarities between two encoding sequences of buildings. Shape-based query experiments show that proposed method in this paper can effectively measure the shape similarity between buildings. And the experimental results are also in line with human visual perception.

Abstract:Shape information plays an important role in the human visual system, and how to represent the shape accurately is a very challenging issue in shape recognition. In recent years, many shape description approaches have been proposed. However, most of the existing methods are still facing challenges on accuracy and computational efficiency. Fourier descriptor is regarded as a promising shape description method because it has a solid theoretical foundation and at the same time possesses the strength of appealing invariance properties and high computational efficiency. We introduce a novel multiscale Fourier descriptor based on triangular features which is used to identify shapes. The local and global characteristics of a shape are effectively captured by the proposed shape descriptor. Meanwhile, the proposed shape descriptor has good properties, such as the invariant of the geometric transformation and the starting point of an object. We tested this descriptor on four popular benchmarking datasets, including MPEG-7, Swedish leaf, ETH-80, and Flavia leaf. The results confirm that our method is better than comparable-complexity approaches based on Fourier descriptors and does not perform unfavorably with respect to more complex, state-of-the-art, shape descriptors. In particular, our method is far superior to the complex shape description methods in terms of retrieval efficiency and computational complexity.

Abstract:In order to improve the sensibility and discrimination power of triangle-area representation, a shape matching method using multi-scaled contour space relationship is proposed. The angle information in multi-scales, which is used to represent shape contours, can be obtained by analyzing the spatial relationship of different points, and a new shape descriptor is further constructed. With the proposed descriptor, the multi-scaled information of contours can be expressed accurately, and the cost for descriptors of the corresponding points from similar shapes can be effectively decreased. As the orders of all the contour points are already known, a dynamic programming method and shape complexity can be used to guarantee the matching accuracy during the feature matching step. The proposed algorithm has been tested on different shape databases, and the performances are superior to many other methods.

Abstract:We apply shape-number method to represent polygon shape and by least editing distance computes the shape similarity.The simplification of building polygon is conducted by replacing the original polygon with the matched template object.The method based on shape matching is an attempt of application spatial recognition in map generalization.The experimental results show that the matching similarity based on the shape-number calculating is consistent with human cognition able to be practically used in building generalization.

Abstract:Building data play a crucial role in geographic information science, and building shape similarity can be used for spatial inquiry, cartographic generalization, map updating, data quality assessment, and other spatial data mining applications. However, conventional shape representation and measurement methods use geometric and statistical measures and may not effectively capture the subtle differences among building shapes. Geospatial artificial intelligence methods often overlook nuanced differences in building contours, posing a challenge when precise fine-grained measurements are required. Furthermore, they have low interpretability. This study proposes a graph edit distance-based method for measuring the similarity between building shapes. It uses geometrics characteristics to construct a graph, matches and associates similar regional features between two building contours, and defines edit costs based on geometric and positional differences that align with the Gestalt principle of visual similarity. It converts the optimal edit path problem to the maximum weighted cluster solution problem and utilizes a heuristic approach to achieve the exact optimal solution within a moderately suitable timeframe. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method identifies detailed differences between building contours, providing accurate similarity measurement with high interpretability.

Abstract:The author proposed a shape matching algorithm based on spectral graph theory. Firstly, we constructed the Laplacian matrices for the matched shapes represented by feature point sets, and the correspondences were estimated from the eigenvectors of the obtained Laplaican matrices. Then the structural characteristics ( adjacency and bending energy ) extracted from the shape were integrated into the solving procedure via the technique of the Viterbi algorithm so as to achieve the matching between shapes. Experimental results revealed the fact that the proposed algorithm possessed higher accuracy and better robustness.

Abstract:Aiming at the urgent requirement of rapid and efficient 3D model shape analysis and retrieval technology,a new method of 3D model shape correspondence analysis by combining the intrinsic heat kernel features and local volume features was proposed.Firstly,the intrinsic shape features of the model were extracted by using Laplacian Eigenmap and heat kernel signature.Then,the feature matching matrix was established by combining the stability of the model heat kernel feature and the significance of local space volume.Finally,the model registration and shape correspondence matching analysis was implemented through feature matrix similarity measurement and short path searching.The experimental results show that,the proposed shape correspondence analysis method with the combination of heat kernel distance and local volume constraint can not only effectively improve the efficiency of model shape matching,but also identify the structural features of the same class models.The proposed method can be applied to further realize the co-segmentation and shape retrieval of multigroup models.

Abstract:Base on shape signature and polygon approximation,this paper presented a fast template matching approach-template matching based on image edge abstract(TMIEA).TEIEA was implemented as following three steps: adopted polygon to approximate continuous edges of original image;transformed each edge of polygon to AP with weight and direction,then IEA,which was invariant to resize,rotate and translate,was built on the set of anchor points;ran template matching with IEA.Several tests were performed and the results proved that the presented approach has lower computation cost and less sensitivity to noise.
Shape Feature Representation of Ground Objects from High-Resolution Remotely Sensed Imagery Base on Fourier Descriptors

Abstract:The traditional Fourier Descriptors(FDs) are normalized in this paper to make it independent of translation, rotation and scale changes.Four typical objects i.e.building,paddy,road and river are selected and their boundaries are expressed as sequences of complex numbers.FDs are obtained through one-dimensional Fourier transform.The characteristics of the frequency spectrum,contribution rate and the shape reconstruction are analyzed.The results show that the different frequency ranges have different contribution rates;the Direct Component(DC) reaches a proportion of more than 70%;the Low Frequency(LF) and High Frequency(HF) totally reach 7%-24%while the Medium Frequency(MF) merely 2%-4%.The LF components(descriptors 1—5) make a commendable reconstruction of objects' shape and these descriptors are applied to the object-oriented classification.The overall classification accuracy is 98.48%with a Kappa coefficient 0.9714.
Modified Fourier Descriptor for Shape Feature Extraction

Abstract:A modified Fourier descriptor was presented. Information from a local space can be used more efficiently. After the boundary pixel set of an object was computed, centroid distance approach was used to compute shape signature in the local space. A pair of shape signature and boundary pixel gray was used as a point in a feature space. Then, Fourier transform was used for composition of point information in the feature space so that the shape features could be computed. It is proved theoretically that the shape features from modified Fourier descriptors are invariant to translation, rotation, scaling, and change of start point. It is also testified by measuring the retrieval performance of the systems that the shape features from modified Fourier descriptors are more discriminative than those from other Fourier descriptors.

Abstract:Fourier descriptor is an important method used in shape analysis and recognition. In this paper, an efficient and accurate method is used to calculate Fourier descriptors of the shape by polygonal approximation, and a method of removing the phase effect of the start point of the border through a shape's main orientation is presented. A new normalized Fourier descriptor is defined, which is invariant in the rotation, translation and scale transform. The experiments show the accuracy and efficiency of the new normalized Fourier descriptors in shape recognition.

Abstract:Fourier descriptors are classical global shape descriptors with high matching speed but low accuracy. To obtain higher accuracy, a novel framework for forming Fourier descriptors is proposed and named as MSFDGF (multiscale Fourier descriptor using group feature). MSFDGF achieves multiscale description by generating coarser contours. Then, a group of complementary features are extracted on the generated coarser contours. Finally, Fourier transform is performed on the features. MSFDGF-SH is a new global descriptor using the MSFDGF framework and shape histograms. Experiments are conducted on four databases, which are MPEG-7 CE-1 Part B, Swedish Plant Leaf, Kimia 99 and Expanded Articulated Database, to evaluate the performance of MSFDGF-SH. The experimental results show that MSFDGF-SH is an effective and efficient global shape descriptor. This new descriptor has a high accuracy of 87.76%, which exceeds the Shape Tree on the MPEG-7 CE-1 Part B dataset. This is the first Fourier descriptor that surpasses the Shape Tree method in terms of both accuracy and speed on this dataset.

Abstract:We present a. new shape descriptor for measuring the similarity between shapes and exploit it in graphical object recognition and retrieval. By statistically integrating the local length-ratio and angle constraints between contour points relative to the shape skeleton, we construct the shape descriptor capturing the global spatial distribution of the shape contour. Then, the dissimilarity between two shapes is computed as a weighted sum of matching errors between corresponding constraint histograms. Experimental results are presented for symbols and shapes data set, showing the effectiveness of our method.
