Abstract:According to the objects of electric transmission path design, the decision tree classifica-tion method is adopted to extract surface features, such as residential areas, roads and water bodies from the QuickBird image. The overall accuracy is 92.83% after post-classification.In addition, based on the digital photogrammetry method, the digital elevation model ( DEM) is built using IRS-P5 stereo images. The DEM derived from IRS-P5 stereo images is validated using 1∶10 000 DEM. The validation root mean square error is ±1.94 m.Then the terrain slope is mapped. These surface features and terrain elements can satisfy the requirements of the electric transmission line path design. So the residential area, road, water body and terrain slope are integrated into GIS database.Accord-ing to the criterion of electric transmission line path design, the two optimal paths are determined using the GIS spatial analysis techniques including the buffer area analysis and spatial overlay analy-sis.Comparing the selected line path with previous conventional method, the total length is reduced about 400 m.The electric transmission line path and all geography elements are overlaid with the DEM to visually perform the true three dimensional geography sight in the study area. The study demonstrates that the remote sensing and GIS technology act as low-cost and effective approaches in electric transmission line path design.
