Abstract:How to make use of monitored data to assess the safety and serviceability of bridge structures has become the bottleneck in the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). This paper attempts to predict reliability indices of bridge structures with the real-time health monitoring information (e.g. everyday monitored extreme stresses) by Bayesian Dynamic Linear Models (BDLM). Conventionally, the BDLMs are only applied to normal random variables. However, due to the diversity of probability density functions fitted by monitored extreme stresses of bridge structures, the non-normal random variables should be transformed into normal random variables. In this paper, the multiple Bayesian dynamic linear models corresponding to different PDFs of structural extreme stresses are firstly built respectively, and then, the combinational prediction model of structural extreme stress is built according to the weights of the prediction precision for the multiple BDLMs. Based on the combinational prediction model, the reliability indices are calculated for the real-time limit state function with further considerations of randomness in the monitored extreme stresses. A five-span continuous steel-plate girder bridge is taken as a case-study example. The accuracy between the developed combinational prediction model and the individual forecasting models is compared. It is shown that the combinational prediction model can provide more accurate results with regard to the one-step forecast. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
