Abstract:Under certain conditions, the phenomenon of Targeted Energy Transfer (TET) may occur in multi-DOF damped nonlinear vibratory systems, it provides a theoretical basis for the application of the newly envisioned Nonlinear Energy Sink (NES). The energy transfer in a nonlinear vibratory system can be viewed as an exposition of the various internal resonance regimes exist in the system. In present contribution, recent research advances of the Nonlinear Normal Mode (NNM) theory are simply reviewed firstly. Secondly, taking a two-DOF nonlinear vibratory system as an example, the Frequency-Energy Plot (FEP) which is an important tool for describing the dynamic characteristics of nonlinear vibratory systems is introduced. The Harmonic Balance Method (HBM) and the numerical continuation method are adopted for constructing the FEP. Two Nonlinear Normal Modes (NNMs) in 1:3 internal resonances are constructed and both of them are localized modes. The concept of locus of NNM on the potential surface is proposed and resorted, thus the connection between the internal resonance and the energy transfer can be investigated. It can be found numerically that when the system is at internal resonances, the loci of NNMs may intersect each other. At such intersection points, the energy of one NNM may freely transfer to another NNM. This is the geometrical interpretation of the energy transfer mechanism in nonlinear vibratory systems.
