Abstract:Irrigation using groundwater of high yield capacity of wheat has resulted in rapid depletion of groundwater table in Huang-Huai-Hai Farming Region (HFR). For more efficient and sustainable utilization of the limited water resources, improved understanding of the temporal and spatial variation of water requirement (ETc) and irrigation amount (ETaw) of winter wheat respond to climate variations and irrigation is essential. We investigated such variation using a modelling approach. The Simulation of Evapotranspiration of Applied Water (SIMETAW) model was first calibrated and validated using experimental data in HFR. The validated model was then applied to simulate ETc and ETaw of the wheat in the HFR. Results showed that (1) SIMETAW model is an effective means to investigate the spatial and temporal variation of water requirement of winter wheat, the performance of this model is therefore considered to be satisfactory for the simulation of water use in wheat growth process in the HFR. (2) Average ETc of winter wheat was 452.4 mm, which showed a decreasing trend from 1960 to 2009, with a significant decrease of 9.21 similar to 18.90 mm from 1970 to 1999; ETaw showed a decreasing trend in each sub-zone during 1960-2009 with obvious inter-regional differences. (3) ETc of winter wheat showed higher in west and lower in east with obvious differences among regions, however, ETaw showed higher in north and lower in south with obvious differences among regions.
