Abstract:This paper presents an autonomous exploration strategy in an unknown, GPS-denied, indoor environment by using stereo vision. Through exploiting the straight architectural lines of corridors and doors, a method was introduced for gathering useful landmarks to estimate UAVs’ three degrees of freedom (DoF) attitudes as well as the horizontal displacement from the wall in a corridor environment. An obstacle detection and localization problem was also addressed where the depth information together with three dimensional coordinates of the detected obstacles’ boundary points was provided. We only extracted feature points from obstacles and tracked them by a pyramidal Lucas-Kanade optical tracker. The judgment of the detected obstacles’ existence in the following processing period was done by comparing the features’ number to a certain threshold. The features were extracted by implementing the Fast Retina Keypoint (FREAK) algorithm, which is inspired by the human visual system and more precisely the retina. After optimization, a six DoF motion estimation relative to the detected obstacles was performed through a closed form method in a least squares sense. The indoor navigation approaches were integrated with structure from motion (SfM) with a focus on indoor aerial vehicle applications. The experimental results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of our methods.
