Abstract:A strut-based scramjet combustor was operated in three different combustion modes under Mach 2.5 inflow conditions, scramjet mode, weak ramjet mode, and strong ramjet mode. The combustion mode transition effects are investigated through ground experiments. The scramjet mode occurred below the overall fuel equivalence ratio of around 0.44. Transition from the scramjet mode to the weak ramjet mode occurred at ER ∼ 0.44, accompanied by a sudden increase in thrust. By contrast, transition from the weak ramjet mode to strong ramjet mode occurred at ER ∼ 0.6125, accompanied by a sudden decrease in thrust. In particularly, combustion mode transitions significantly change the dominant characteristics of the flow field.

Abstract:To enable the scramjet operate in a wider flight Mach number, a staged-combustor with dual-strut is introduced to hold more heat release at low flight Mach conditions. The behavior of mode transition was examined using a direct-connect model scramjet experiment along with pressure measurements. The typical operating modes of the staged-combustor are analyzed. Fuel injection scheme has a significant effect on the combustor operating modes, particularly for the supersonic combustion mode. Thrust performances of the combustor with different combustion modes and fuel distributions are reported in this paper. The first-staged strut injection has a better engine performance in the operation of subsonic combustion mode. On the contrast, the second-staged strut injection has a better engine performance in the operation of supersonic combustion mode.

Abstract:A directly connected transient scramjet simulator was developed for supersonic combustion experiments to gain a deeper understanding of the process and mechanism of mode transitions in dual-mode scramjet engines. This study presents experimental simulations of flame development under constant combustor inlet conditions with increasing equivalence ratios, utilizing advanced high-speed measurement techniques such as high-frequency static pressure, schlieren imaging, and methylene radical chemiluminescence. The results demonstrated that abrupt changes occurred during the mode transition as the equivalence ratio increased. Specifically, lower equivalence ratios correspond to the shear layer mode, whereas higher equivalence ratios correspond to the jet-wake and jet-front modes. The stable position of the precombustion shock wave is determined by the heat released during combustion, whereas both the precombustion shock wave and the fuel-injection depth determine the combustion mode and flame-anchoring position. Finally, the dynamic variation of shock waves inside the combustor is significant in contributing to abrupt mode transitions.

Abstract:Combustion characteristics in a scramjet combustor equipped with a thin strut were observed and discussed in this paper. A series of numerical simulations were carried out under different flight dynamic pressure conditions. The parameters of cold flow field and combustion field were used to analyze the combustion characteristics. Based on the basic data, the mixing efficiency, characteristics of flame establishment and propagation as well as combustion field characteristics were discussed in this paper. The influence laws of lower dynamic pressure conditions were further revealed to optimize combustor performance. Results indicated that properly reducing the flight dynamic pressure can enhance the mixing of kerosene. The diffusion of kerosene determined the distribution of combustion zone and heat release. Then, the influencing factor that affected the chemical reaction rate was revealed to shorten chemical reaction time. And the higher flight Mach number made the flame propagation velocity faster and the combustion stability stronger. The fuel mixing became the main factor and low dynamic pressure had little effect on laminar flame propagation velocity under high Mach number conditions. The investigations in this paper are helpful for understanding the combustion characteristics under low dynamic pressure conditions.

Abstract:The annular scramjet combustor is considered one of the best configurations for a wide-speed-range combined engine, owing to its superior thermal protection performance and optimal geometric compatibility with rockets and turbines. To investigate the effect of fuel injection methods on the flame oscillation characteristics in the annular combustor, a scaled-down experiment was conducted on a fan-shaped combustor with a high aspect ratio equipped with multiple struts, utilizing liquid kerosene as the fuel. A series of experiments were conducted at the combustor inlet conditions of Ma=2.7, P-t=1.68MPa, and T-t=1640K. High-speed cameras and pressure measurements were used in the experiments, and the flame images were processed using proper orthogonal decomposition. The findings revealed that under single-strut and multi-strut injection conditions, the flame oscillated in two modes: shear layer oscillation and central flame oscillation. As the equivalent ratio of injection strut increased, the oscillation frequency increased from 25 to 284Hz, and the oscillation mode transition caused by the adverse pressure gradient occurred. The flashback was closely related to the combustion mode, and the distinct flame propagation processes under supersonic and subsonic flow conditions resulted in different oscillation characteristics. The experiment demonstrated that the flashback issue could be mitigated by increasing the spacing between the fuel injection struts. The study in this paper will provide important references for future research on flame oscillation and propagation characteristics in high-aspect-ratio annular combustors.

Abstract:Combustion mode transition is an important way for a dual-mode scramjet engine to obtain the high engine performance in a wide operating range of flight Mach number. In this study, the influencing factors on the combustion mode transition boundary for the scramjet engine was investigated based on a one-dimensional model proposed earlier by the authors. The definition of the combustion mode transition boundary was described. The effect of the duct area profile of the combustor, the heat release distribution in the combustor, the wall temperature and wall roughness of the combustor and the air composition of the incoming flow on the combustion mode transition boundary were analyzed. The result showed that the variation of these factors will make the combustion mode transition boundary deviate from the design value. The influencing rules found in this study will provide some theoretical foundations for designing the engine structure and the combustion mode transition control scheme of the scramjet engine.
Aviation kerosene supersonic combustion in dual-mode scramjet

Abstract:With the software numerical analysis of the aviation kerosene spray supersonic combustion was carried out in the dual-mode scramjet combustor. At Mach number 5 flight conditions, the numerical results were gotten with the discrete droplet model, the equilibrium reaction kinetics model, the k-w turbulence model and the probability density function turbulence combustion model. The wall static pressure distributions derived with the CFD agreed with the experimental results, and the numerical total pressure loss coefficient 0.703, is lower than the experimental value 0.707. The numerical results show the strut and cavities improve the mixture and combustion, and the combustion efficiency of the combustor exit is 0.62, which is less than the experimental combustion efficiency 0.696. This dual-mode combustion system operates in ramjet mode.

Investigation on the mode transition of a typical three-dimensional scramjet combustor equipped with a strut

Abstract:<p>A three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the two equation RNG k-ε turbulence model have been employed to capture the mode transition properties in a dual-mode scramjet combustor. Based on the code validation and the grid independency analysis, two transition processes from scram to ram mode and from ram to scram mode are analyzed in detail. The fuel equivalent ratio is controlled by linearly increasing or decreasing the injection pressure of each nozzle to achieve the mode transition. During the mode transition, the thermodynamic properties of the combustion chamber change dramatically and the flow field structure changes correspondingly. The variation of the flow field structure is mainly reflected in the upstream flow field, while the variation of the flow field temperature is mainly reflected in the downstream flow field. The obtained results show that there is an obvious temperature variation in the downstream flow field. Besides, the upstream wave structures will change when the temperature varies to a certain degree, then the mode-transition occurs completely. Since the ram mode is a more stable mode than the scram mode, and the transition to the scram mode is more difficult than the transition from the scram mode to the ram mode. The variation of the shock wave position in the isolator is accompanied by the variation of the mode transition. During the transition from scram to ram mode, the shock wave at the combustor entrance is gradually pushed out and moves forward at the position with the lowest Mach number. During the transition from ram to scram mode, the shock wave in the isolator is gradually pushed forward into the flow field, but the shock waves is still in the isolator when the flow field turns into the scram mode.</p>

Combustion Characteristic Using O-2-Pilot Strut in A Liquid-Kerosene-Fueled Strut-Based Dual-Mode Scramjet

Abstract:A set of exploratory experiments are conducted to test a newly designed strut for fuel injection and flame holding in a liquid-kerosene-fueled dual-mode scramjet combustor. The thickness of the strut is 8mm and the front blockage is about 8%. To organize stable combustion in a Mach number equal to 2.6 air flow under this thin strut using room-temperature liquid kerosene in a flash wall combustor without any cavity and other flame holders, some oxygen is injected through a set of orifices at the back of the strut, based on which a stable center local flame is generated at the back of the strut and the main flow combustion can be organized around this local flame. Experimental results show that stable combustion can be achieved at the center of the combustor with a wide range of equivalence ratio from 0.19 to 1 based on this center flame strut strategy. Through the analysis of the pressure distribution along the combustor, different combustor modes appear with different equivalence ratio. The article also gives some discussions about different influence of the oxygen to the combustion process under different equivalence ratio.

Abstract:The organization of the flow field in a scramjet is of great significance in achieving stable combustion in supersonic flow. Experimental investigation of the strut-induced flow in a scramjet is conducted with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. The central wakes along with two outer free streams can be observed in the instantaneous velocity fields. Then the calculated vorticity shows a similar distribution with the mixing layers in the single-shot image, suggesting the mixing layers a preliminary assessment of the flow. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of snapshots reveals several features beneficial for flame stabilization in the strut-induced flow, including the reverse flow, central large-scale vortex structures and the vortex structures in the mixing layers. Moreover, by comparison it is found that a significant asymmetry of strut-induced flow would compress the low-speed region and weaken the large-scale vortex structure which would present a challenge to achieve flame establishment. The research contributes to a profound understanding of strut-induced flow which may be useful for engineering design and optimization.

Abstract:The present study experimentally investigates the transition of flame stabilization mode at Ma = 2.92 using a model scramjet combustor. The combustion mode is analyzed by pressure measurement and quasi-one-dimensional analysis. The effects of both equivalence ratio and aft wall offset on flame behaviors are further characterized by CH* chemiluminescence. The results show that the transition from cavity stabilized combustion mode to jet-wake stabilized combustion mode is realized by increasing the equivalence ratio. And the quasi-one-dimensional analysis reveals that all cases work in the Early Scram mode and approach thermal chocking after increasing equivalence ratio. As the equivalence ratio increases, the amplitudes of the flamebase and heat release gradually increase, and their distributions gradually migrate downstream. The amplitude of flamebase and heat transfer remains prominent with the consistent rise in equivalence ratio. At the same time, the spatial distribution of heat release tends to spread out upstream and occasionally appear upstream of the leading edge of the cavity, indicating that the flame stabilization mode transforms from cavity stabilized combustion mode to jet-wake stabilized combustion mode. The spatial variation of local heat release rate is responsible for the transition of flame stabilization mode. A slight aft wall offset promotes the transition from cavity stabilized combustion mode to jet-wake stabilized combustion mode at a higher equivalence ratio.

Abstract:The ignition process in a thin strut equipped supersonic combustor fueled with liquid kerosene was observed to deepen the understanding of the ignition characteristics. A large number of experiments were carried out under the conditions of T-t=1,680 K, P-t=1.87 MPa, and Ma=2.8. The combustion establishment process and the flame characteristics were captured and reproduced by a high speed camera. Results show that the flame is first established near the igniter flame in the lower half of the combustor under the action of the recirculation zone and oxygen supplement at the end of the strut. Then, the flame spreads to the main flow of the combustor. The ignition process under different equivalence ratios was compared and studied. The results indicate that the ignition delay time and the flame distribution of the ignition process are affected by the equivalence ratio. At the same time, it was found that there are two modes in the flame establishment process, namely, the upstream propagation mode and the downstream propagation mode. The flame propagation speeds in different directions under these two propagation modes are different. The results presented in this paper are valuable for the future optimization of ignition performance in a scramjet combustor using kerosene fuel injection.

Abstract:This manuscript designed an axisymmetric variable geometry scramjet combustor equipped with a strut flame holder to help the combustor work in a wide flight Mach numbers and conducted a series of numerical calculations and experiments to study the performance of the axisymmetric combustor. The characteristics of the combustor under the different flight Mach numbers (2, 4, 6) are discussed by the numerical calculations, and the results testify that the designed combustor can operate in a large range of the flight Mach number. Then the performances of the combustor in high Ma (4 and 6) are studied. The maximum pressure ratio of the combustor under Ma = 6 is about 6.5. With the divergence ratio increasing, the thermal chock of the combustor decreases under the flight Ma = 4. When the flight Ma is 2, and the divergence ratio is 3.2, the combustor can work well with the fuel injected by the center cone and the wall(1). However part of the oxygen near the bottom wall can not be ignited, and the flame distribution is uneven. To solve this problem, the multi-wall fuel injected method is taken. With the wall(2) fuel added, the mixing efficiency of the fuel increases, and the flame near the bottom wall is established. The results in this study are valuable for the future axisymmetric variable geometry scramjet combustor design and the optimization of combustion distribution uniformity.

Abstract:In this work, a new configuration of strut-based scramjet is proposed, and a series of simulations are conducted to investigate its possibility of practical application. The simulation results are verified via the classical DLR ramjet and an experiment conducted on the connected pipe facility. The inlet area (Ain) and air intake height (H) of the combustor are varied independently to investigate their performance. The results indicate that the flow field and shock wave structure of such engine reveal similar characteristics as the classical DLR engine, and the variation in engine geometry can significantly affect its combustion characteristics. Moreover, the combustion efficiency could be enhanced by 2% as the Ain varied from 900π mm2 to 1100π mm2; increasing the air intake path (H) to 12 mm can increase the combustion efficiency by 25%. In general, the present work proposes a new geometry of the scramjet combustor; this combustor has possibility of practical application, but a further and detailed investigation is still needed.

Abstract:The combustion mode transition will occur repeatedly during the real flight of a hydrogen fueled scramjet. Under the assumption of inviscid flow, a series of the equations have been developed to identify combustion mode transition in an analytical way. The processes of heating and accelerating induced mode transition are investigated, respectively. This paper presents an analytical solution to understand the conditions for the transition between ramjet-scramjet operation modes. Besides, this paper also presents a qualitative explanation of the mode transition processes in the physical point of view. The mode transition is closely related to the thermal choking effects and shock wave motion. The process of mode transition is discontinuous and very fast. There is a sudden change with the combustor entry Mach number in this process.

Abstract:An experimental investigation of combustion mode transition in a hydrocarbon fueled scramjet combustor model is reported under Mach number 2.1 and 2.5 inflow conditions. Three different combustion modes with respect to equivalence ratio are observed, namely, scramjet mode, weak ramjet mode and strong ramjet mode. The typical features of different combustion modes are analyzed by wall-pressures and one-dimensionally estimated Mach number distributions. The processes of combustion mode transitions show significant nonlinear characteristics. The static pressure and Mach number have discontinuous sudden changes as the mode transition occurs, especially near the fuel-supply region, emphasizing the importance of detection and control of combustion modes. The nonlinear characteristics of wall-pressures near the exit of the isolator can be used in the detection of different combustion modes. A series of experiments prove that this pressure-magnitude-based detection technique is feasible.

Abstract:In this paper, the numerical and experimental investigations have been conducted to study the flowing residence characteristics in the supersonic combustor. A thin strut equipped in the center of the combustor was adopted as the flame holder. The airflow residence time was calculated by a new method, and results proved that the airflow residence time was longest in the center of the recirculation zone. Then, the interaction between the strut geometrical parameters and the airflow residence time was investigated. The results revealed that the thickness of the strut played a decisive role on the residence time and with the strut thickness increasing, the residence time became longer. The sweep angle and the length of the strut had few influences on the residence time. A series of experiments have been conducted at the flight condition of Ma=6.5. Experimental results indicated that, with the help of the long residence time in the recirculation zone, an initial flame was formed in the recirculation zone at the tailing of the strut, and grew to form a steady flame in the center of the main flow. These results are valuable for the future optimization of the combustion stabilization in the supersonic combustor using strut as the flame holder.

Abstract:Scramjet design is still a great challenge for researchers. It proves to be a critical issue for scramjet combustor to avoid intensive thermal choking while increasing combustion efficiency. Focusing on this target, the relationship between combustor configuration and the performance of dual-mode combustor was investigated using a direct-connected scramjet facility. Combustor was constituted by constant area part and divergent part, while cavities equipped in the expanded wall as flame-holding device. Ethylene was injected normally into the Ma 2.5 mainstream by both wall and cavity injectors. Two critical parameters of configuration, cavity location and the divergent angle, were changed during experiments. Combustion efficiency could evaluate the combustor performance, which was measured by an optical sensor based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). Combined with traditional wall static pressure and schlieren measurement, combustion efficiency and possible heat release both streamwise and spanwise were analyzed for different cases. It is found that combustion apparently is well organized with smaller divergent angle. Combustor could avoid inlet unstart and get disperse heat release with double cavities, but there is still space to increase efficiency by changing the location of recirculation zone. And experimental results show that the cooperation of cavities is essential for stabilizing combustion downstream.
