Abstract:The unsaturated porous continuum model using FEM and the discrete element model using DEM for granular media are combined in the present work. The BSM that couples the Biot-Cosserat continuum modeling and the discrete particle assembly modeling in both coarse and fine scales respectively is proposed to study the hydro-mechanical coupling problem for unsaturated granular material. In light of the passive air phase assumption, along with the reduction of semi-discretized mass conservation equation for pore water, the pore water pressure is further eliminated as the primary unknown from the formulation for numerical solution procedure of unsaturated soils. Instead, the pore water pressure is only taken as the internal state variable defined and evaluated at the quadrature points of the FE mesh. Consequently, a reduced finite element model for unsaturated porous Cosserat continuum, in which the translational and rotational displacements of the solid phase of porous Cosserat continuum are only taken as primary unknows, is proposed. According to the decoupling of the fine and coarse scale calculations in the numerical procedure of the bridging scale method (BSM), the central difference method and the Newmark method with different sizes of the time step are applied for the coarse and fine scale time integration schemes respectively in the present BSM to enhance computational efficiency. As compared with the DEM applied to the overall structure as a refined computational method, the computational efficiency of the present BSM is greatly enhanced. It demonstrates by the numerical results for the slope stability example problem with no consideration of the wetting process that up to 86.65% of the computational cost spent for the DEM applied to the overall structure is saved in the proposed BSM while the similar computational accuracy is achieved. The numerical results for a 2D example problem of slope stability demonstrate the applicability and performance of the present BSM and its advantage in revealing the microscopic mechanism of failure mode in unsaturated granular structure. The reduction of the load-carrying capability up to about 50% due to the rainfall illustrated by numerical results for the slope example demonstrates the necessity and significance of developing the present multi-scale computational model using BSM for unsaturated granular materials, in which evolutions of the saturation degree and suction distributions in the unsaturated granular structure accompanying with the wetting process and their effects on the failure of geo-structures are taken into account.
