Abstract:Aimed to quantify relationships between crash rates and traffic flow conditions at different urban express artery segment types, basic segments and ramp hand were chosen as subjects.Critical speed was adopted to differentiate congested and uncongested flow regimes, and traffic density was applied for classifying traffic flow conditions.Crash rate was calculated for each flow condition and crash rates of alignment types, ramp hand and upstream/downstream areas of ramp junctions were compared. The results indicate that crash rates follow quadratic function to traffic density for uncongested flow at each segment type, and merge segments have significantly higher crash rates than basic/diverge segments;for congested flow, total crash rates at three segment types follow an exponential function to traffic density;alignment type, ramp hand and upstream/downstream areas of ramp-junctions have important effect on the tendency of crash rates for uncongested flow, and the effect at diverge segment is more significant.
