Abstract:We explore three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant via canonical quantization. We focus on chiral gravity which is related to a single copy of Chern-Simons theory and is simpler to treat in canonical quantization. Its phase space for an initial value surface is given by the appropriate moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We use geometric quantization to compute partition functions of chiral gravity on three-manifolds of the form , where can have asymptotic boundaries. Most of these topologies do not admit a classical solution and are thus not amenable to a direct semiclassical path integral computation. We use an index theorem that expresses the partition function as an integral of characteristic classes over phase space. In the presence of n asymptotic boundaries, we use techniques from equivariant cohomology to localize the integral to a finite-dimensional integral over , which we evaluate in low genus cases. Higher genus partition functions quickly become complicated since they depend in an oscillatory way on Newton's constant. There is a precise sense in which one can isolate the non-oscillatory part which we call the fake partition function. We establish that there is a topological recursion that computes the fake partition functions for arbitrary Riemann surfaces . There is a scaling limit in which the model reduces to JT gravity and our methods give a novel way to compute JT partition functions via equivariant localization.

Topological densities in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Abstract:The present work is devoted to studying the background dynamical evolution of a scalar field in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in maximally symmetric space-time. This study is useful for giving meaning to the presence of two Gauss-Bonnet vacua, instead of using the spherically symmetric bubbles of the "true" vacuum expand in the "false" vacuum. The theory admits two possible effective cosmological constants, which lead to two maximally symmetric vacuum solutions. The first solution corresponds to the dynamics of dark energy. When there is matter, the second solution describes dark matter. In Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we establish the expression of the topological mass spectrum which depends on the golden ratio and its inverse. In the Schwarzschild limit, the topological density corresponds to the standard model radiation energy density. We find the mass loss rate which gives the evolution of mass over time.

Abstract:Using the Chern-Simons formulation of AdS 3 gravity as well as the Costello- Witten-Yamazaki (CWY) theory for quantum integrability, we construct a novel topological 4D gravity given by Eq(5.1) with observables based on gravitational gauge field holonomies. The field action S grav 4D of this gravity has a gauge symmetry SL(2,C) and reads also as the difference S CWY L 4D - S CWY R 4D with 4D Chern-Simons field actions S CWY L/R 4D given by left/right CWY theory Eq(3.9). We also use this 4D gravity derivation to build observables describing gravitational topological defects and their interactions. We conclude our study with few comments regarding quantum integrability and the extension of AdS 3 /CFT 2 correspondence with regard to the obtained topological 4D gravity.

The emergence of Einstein gravity from topological supergravity in $3+1$D

Abstract:The topological aspects of Einstein gravity suggest that topological invariance could be a more profound principle in understanding quantum gravity. In this work, we explore a topological supergravity action that initially describes a universe without Riemann curvature, which seems trivial. However, we made a surprising discovery by introducing a small deformation parameter $\lambda$, which can be regarded as an AdS generalization of supersymmetry (SUSY). We find that the deformed topological quantum field theory (TQFT) becomes unstable at low energy, resulting in the emergence of a classical metric, whose dynamics are controlled by the Einstein equation. Our findings suggest that a quantum theory of gravity could be governed by a UV fixed point of a SUSY TQFT, and classical spacetime ceases to exist beyond the Planck scale.

Nonlinear realisation approach to topologically massive supergravity

Abstract:We develop a nonlinear realisation approach to topologically massive supergravity in three dimensions, with and without a cosmological term. It is a natural generalisation of a similar construction for ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in four dimensions, which was recently proposed by one of us. At the heart of both formulations is the nonlinear realisation approach to gravity which was given by Volkov and Soroka fifty years ago in the context of spontaneously broken local supersymmetry. In our setting, the action for cosmological topologically massive supergravity is invariant under two different local supersymmetries. One of them acts on the Goldstino, while the other supersymmetry leaves the Goldstino invariant. The former can be used to gauge away the Goldstino, and then the resulting action coincides with that given in the literature.

Abstract:We identify an ambiguity in the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant that originates in an outer automorphism of the Lie algebra sl(2,R). It has important consequences for the stability of the theory in a space-time with boundary. We revisit the classical equivalence of three-dimensional gravity with a boundary Liouville theory both on and off the mass shell. Moreover, we provide further details on the quantum equivalence, the gauge symmetry that renders the spectrum diagonal, as well as the relation between asymptotically AdS3 metrics and polar boundary conditions. We thus set the proposal that the Liouville conformal field theory serves as a definition of a unitary theory of pure gravity in three dimensions with negative cosmological constant on a more stable footing.

Abstract:It is known that Vilkovisky-DeWitt's effective action is gauge invariant off-shell and independent of quantum field parametrization. In this work, we perform the calculation of the divergences in two-loop Vilkovisky-DeWitt's effective action for the theory of a massive scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. We quantize both gravity and scalar field around a flat Minkowski metric and a constant scalar field background. The quantum corrections are computed up to second order in the background scalar field for the purpose of mass renormalization.

On Phase Transition of Two-Dimensional Topological Gravity

Abstract:We show that one can use some renormalized coupling constants to compute the free energy and correlation functions at all critical points of the two-dimensional topological gravity in a uniform way. In particular, one can derive the critical exponents of the free energy and correlation functions at all critical points in a uniform way. Some concrete results for the case of $(3,2)$-model (pure gravity) and the $(5,2)$-model (Yang-Lee edge singularity coupled with gravity) are also presented.

Abstract:We construct a quantization of the moduli space of maximal globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metrics on with constant sectional curvature , for a punctured surface S . Although this moduli space is known to be symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of S independently of the value of , we define geometrically natural classes of observables leading to -dependent quantizations. Using special coordinate systems, we first view as the set of points of a cluster -variety valued in the ring of generalized complex numbers . We then develop an -version of the quantum theory for cluster -varieties by establishing -versions of the quantum dilogarithm function. As a consequence, we obtain three families of projective unitary representations of the mapping class group of S . For these representations recover those of Fock and Goncharov, while for the representations are new.

Soft gravitons in three dimensions

Abstract:We consider quantum gravity with zero cosmological constant in three dimensions. First, we show that pure quantum gravity can be written as a magnetic Carrollian theory living on null infinity, described by Schwarzian-like degrees of freedom. Next, we couple quantum gravity to massless matter. Transition amplitudes exhibit several features that resemble soft graviton physics in four dimensions, despite the absence of a propagating graviton. As in four dimensions, we find three equivalent results: a soft graviton theorem, an infinite-dimensional BMS asymptotic symmetry, and a gravitational memory effect. We also resolve some extant puzzles concerning the partition function and Hilbert space of pure 3d gravity with zero cosmological constant.

Abstract:At a critical ``chiral'' coupling, topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant exhibits several unusual features, including the emergence of a new logarithmic branch of solutions and a linearization instability for certain boundary conditions. I show that at this coupling, the linearized theory may be parametrized by a free scalar field at the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound, and use this description to investigate these features.

Gravity as a topological gauge theory

Abstract:We describe a topological gauge theory with underlying Cartan geometry $G/H$ and principal $H$-bundle. The topological action is constructed as a linear combination of the Euler and Pontrjagin numbers coming from entries of the curvature $\bar{\Omega}$ of a Cartan connection. As an example we show that for $G = SO(4,1)$ (respectively $SO(3,2)$) for $\Lambda_0 > 0$ (respectively $\Lambda_0 < 0$), and $H=SO(3,1)$, a very particular linear combination yields the Holst + Euler and Pontrjagin of the curvature $R$ of the spin connection + Nieh-Yan + bare cosmological constant $\Lambda_0$ terms. Additionally, in this construction, the coupling constants of these different terms are inherently linked together. The other example treated is the one of the Möbius group $G= SO(4,2) /\{\pm I\}$ and $H = CO(4,2) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. By considering a constraint on the "pair of frames" $(\alpha,\beta)$ we retrieve an action comprising all terms compatible with diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance described in the previous example + kinetic term for a scalar field $+$ an interaction of that scalar field with the Torsion $T$, the scalar field being related to dilation. Finally, in both examples, we study the equations of motion associated to the total (Gauge + Matter) action. It is especially shown that one of the solutions in the Möbius case consists of Einstein's equations modified by the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with an additional source term for curvature depending on specific variations of spin density of matter.

Unfashionable observations about three dimensional gravity

Abstract:It is commonly accepted that the study of 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity could teach us something about the 3+1 dimensional case. The non-perturbative methods developed in this case share, as basic ingredient, a reformulation of gravity as a gauge field theory. However, these methods suffer many problems. Firstly, this perspective abandon the non-degeneracy of the metric and causality as fundamental principles, hoping to recover them in a certain low-energy limit. Then, it is not clear how these combinatorial techniques could be used in the case where matter fields are added, which are however the essential ingredients in order to produce non trivial observables in a generally covariant approach. Endly, considering the status of the observer in these approaches, it is not clear at all if they really could produce a completely covariant description of quantum gravity. We propose to re-analyse carefully these points. This study leads us to a really covariant description of a set of self-gravitating point masses in a closed universe. This approach is based on a set of observables associated to the measurements accessible to a participant-observer, they manage to capture the whole dynamic in Chern-Simons gravity as well as in true gravity. The Dirac algebra of these observables can be explicitely computed, and exhibits interesting algebraic features related to Poisson-Lie groupoids theory.

Abstract:We describe the coupling of holomorphic Chern-Simons theory at large N with Kodaira-Spencer gravity. We explain a new anomaly cancellation mechanism at all loops in perturbation theory for open-closed topological B-model. At one loop this anomaly cancellation is analogous to the Green-Schwarz mechanism. As an application, we introduce a type I version of Kodaira-Spencer theory in complex dimensions 3 and 5. In complex dimension 5, we show that it can only be coupled consistently at the quantum level to holomorphic Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SO(32). This is analogous to the Green-Schwarz mechanism for the physical type I string. This coupled system is conjectured to be a supersymmetric localization of type I string theory. In complex dimension 3, the required gauge group is SO(8).

Abstract:We present an action for minimal massive gravity (MMG) in three dimensions in terms of a dreibein and an independent spin connection. Furthermore, the construction provides an action principle for an infinite family of so-called third-way consistent generalizations of the three-dimensional Einstein field equations, including exotic massive gravity and new higher-order generalizations. It allows us to systematically construct the matter couplings for these models, including the couplings to fermions, depending on the spin connection. In particular, we construct different supersymmetric extensions of MMG, and derive their second order fermionic field equations. This establishes a new class of three-dimensional supergravity theories and we discuss their limit to topological massive supergravity. Finally, we identify the landscape of (anti–)de Sitter vacua of the supersymmetric models. We analyze the spectrum and the unitarity properties of these vacua. Abstract:We compute the gravitational action of a free massive Majorana fermion coupled to two-dimensional gravity on compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. The structure is similar to the case of the massive scalar. The small-mass expansion of the gravitational yields the Liouville action at zeroth order, and we can identify the Mabuchi action at first order. While the massive Majorana action is a conformal deformation of the massless Majorana CFT, we find an action different from the one given by the David-Distler-Kawai (DDK) ansatz.

AdS$_3$ Einstein Gravity and Boundary Description: Pedagogical Review

Abstract:We review the various aspects of the 3D Einstein gravity theory with a negative cosmological constant and its boundary description. We also explore its connections to CFTs, modular symmetry, and holography. It is worth noting that this particular theory is topological in nature, which means that all the physical degrees of freedom are located on the boundary. Additionally, we can derive the boundary description on a torus, which takes the form of a 2D Schwarzian theory. This observation suggests that the relevant degrees of freedom for the theory can be described using this 2D theory. Because of the renormalizability of the 3D gravity theory, one can probe the quantum regime. This suggests that it is possible to investigate quantum phenomena. Unlike the conventional CFTs, when considering the AdS$_3$ background, the boundary theory loses modular symmetry. This represents a departure from the usual behavior of CFT and is quite intriguing. The Weyl transformation induces anomaly in CFTs, and we indicate that applying this transformation to the 2D Schwarzian theory leads to similar results. Summing over all geometries with the asymptotic AdS$_3$ boundary condition is equivalent to summing over a modular group. The partition function is one-loop exact and therefore an analytical expression from the summation. This theory holds potential applications in Quantum Information and is a recurring theme in the study of holography, where gravitational theories are connected with CFTs.
