Abstract:For small and medium-size rivers in the northern area, the daily-regulation operation of run-of-river hydropower plant would have relatively large impacts on water quality and flow rate downstream of the dam, particularly in dry seasons of low flow. For this issue, flow and water quality were simulated and the impact of daily-regulation operation was examined for the Shiyan hydropower plant (SHP) located on the middle reach of Mudan River mainstream. The results show that for this run-of-river hydropower plant, its daily intermittent operation could lead to fluctuations in the water quality and flow rate in its downstream and that the amplitudes of fluctuations are reducing towards its further downstream. Reducing the number of operating generator units or extending the power-generating period is favorable to the stability of water quality while increasing the flow release during shutdown of the plant has little effect. A prediction of the Sanjianfang hydropower plant indicates its impact on water quality in the Chaihe bridge section nearly 10 times of that by Shiyan hydropower plant.
