Abstract:Bottom-up strategies for the fabrication of nanomaterials have the advantage of scalability, cost-effective and sustainability, and thus hold great potential to solve the current critical energy and environmental issues facing humanity. Current challenges consist of assembly of the nanomaterials into, for example, various forms of films, which are immensely useful in realistic applications of the nanomaterials. The key is to understand the interplay between the material components. In this contribution, I will present some of our recent results in interfacing and assembling different nanostructures at different length scales by solution processes. The resulting architectures have been explored for the efficient conversion of sunlight to chemical fuels. It has proved promising to use earth-abundant materials and low-cost processes to fabricate solar fuel devices for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy-storage systems such as supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries require complex intertwined networks that provide fast transport pathways for ions and electrons without interfering with their energy density. Self-assembly of nanomaterials into hierarchical structures offers exciting possibilities to create such pathways. This article summarizes recent research achievements in self-assembled zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional nanomaterials, ordered pore structure materials, and the interfaces between these. We analyze how self-assembly strategies can create storage architectures that improve device performance toward higher energy densities, longevity, rate capability, and device safety. At the end, the remaining challenges of scalable low-cost manufacturing and future opportunities such as self-healing are discussed.

Abstract:Heteroassembly of low-dimensional building blocks is important but challenging in various applications. On page 3135, a method using aerosol spray drying is developed by Y. Lu, F. Wei, and co-workers. Using this method, oxide nanocrystals and carbon nanotubes are assembled into three-dimensional mesoporous nanocomposites, which offer remarkable energy-storage performance. The synthesis method is facile and broadly applicable in preparing composite materials.

Abstract:Engineering highly active and robust carbon nanoarchitectures is critical for energy storage devices with fast and durable charge storage capability. Herein, a quinone-amine coupling route is reported to customize interwoven heterodiatomic carbon nanofiber networks (HCNN), triggered by the polymerization between electron-withdrawing benzoquinone and electron-donating 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl ether through hydrogen-bonding and π − π stacking interactions. Modulating the NaNH2-assisted thermal programming triggers the in-situ templating effect of sodium inorganics in polymer scaffold voids to form abundant micropores, and induces the expansion effect of released gases (N2, O2, NH3) to broaden micropores to more mesopores. HCNN shows ion-compatible pore structures, exposed electrosorption platform (2384 m2 g−1), nanofiber topology, and rich N/O motifs (4.15/13.82 wt%). The subnanopores (0.87 nm) and secondary pores (0.66 nm) of HCNN are size-exclusively accessible for SO3CF3− anion (0.79 nm) and Li+ cation (0.65 nm) of LiCF3SO3 electrolyte, which empowers high accessibility of electroactive sites and rapid ion transfer, maximizing the spatial capacitive charge storage. The assembled HCNN-based aqueous supercapacitors achieve ultrahigh energy densities of 41.8 Wh kg−1 in LiCF3SO3 electrolyte and 110.6 Wh kg−1 in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid electrolyte. Besides, HCNN as the Zn-ion capacitor cathode harvests high capacity of 220 mAh g−1, high-rate tolerance (20 A g−1) and a superior lifespan of 20, 000 cycles. This work sheds lights on structural and functional design for high-performance carbons toward advanced electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Nanostructured composites built from ordinary building units have attracted much attention because of their collective properties for critical applications. Herein, we have demonstrated the heteroassembly of carbon nanotubes and oxide nanocrystals using an aerosol spray method to prepare nanostructured mesoporous composites for electrochemical energy storage. The designed composite architectures show high conductivity and hierarchically structured mesopores, which achieve rapid electron and ion transport in electrodes. Therefore, as-synthesized carbon nanotube/TiO2 electrodes exhibit high rate performance through rapid Li(+) intercalation, making them suitable for ultrafast energy storage devices. Moreover, the synthesis process provides a broadly applicable method to achieve the heteroassembly of vast low-dimensional building blocks for many important applications.

Abstract:<p>Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a promising material with unique features such as diverse composition, high porosity, tunable pore structure, and versatile functionality. These characteristics have attracted significant research interest in photochemical and electrochemical energy conversion and storage (ECS). However, the utilization of pristine MOFs in ECS is still hindered by their limited conductivity and functionality. Recently, the integration of MOFs with functional materials has been studied intensively to surmount the deficiencies of pristine MOFs while maintaining their original advantages. The MOFs act as the essential active species, or as supports to accommodate and stabilize these materials. The incorporation can deliver synergistic effects and enhance the properties of MOFs, thus greatly improving their efficiency and stability in ECS. The favorable nanostructures of MOF composites with different dimensionalities including 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D can further enrich their structural diversity. Their advanced nanostructures contribute greatly to the enhanced structural robustness, exposure of active sites, and mass/electron transport, which are promising for practical ECS. In this review, recent progress in the rational design of MOF composites with different dimensionalities is summarized. The extensive applications of MOF composites for ECS systems are also discussed for elucidating their advantages, challenges, and prospects.</p>

Abstract:Research on 2D nanomaterials is rising to an unprecedented height and will continue to remain a very important topic in materials science. In parallel with the discovery of new candidate materials and exploration of their unique characteristics, there are intensive interests to rationally control and tune the properties of 2D nanomaterials in a predictable manner. Considerable attention is focused on modifying these materials structurally or engineering them into designed architectures to meet requirements for specific applications. Recent advances in such structural engineering strategies have demonstrated their ability to overcome current material limitations, showing great promise for promoting device performance to a new level in many energy-related applications. Existing in many forms, these strategies can be categorized based on how they intrinsically or extrinsically alter the pristine structure. Achieved through various synthetic routes and practiced in a range of different material systems, they usually share common descriptors that predestine them to be effective in certain circumstances. Therefore, understanding the underlying mechanism of these strategies to provide fundamental insights into structural design and property tailoring is of critical importance. Here, the most recent development of structural engineering of 2D nanomaterials and their significant effects in energy storage and catalysis technologies are addressed.

Carbon-based Nanostructures for Energy Conversion and Storage: Synthesis, Performance and Mechanism

Abstract:Fuel cells, supercapacitors and lithium-sulphur batteries are the typical energy conversion and storage devices of great significance in which carbon-based nanostructures could play irreplaceable role. The functionalized carbon-based nanostructures could be applied to fuel cells to lower Pt loading by highly dispersing and immobilizing Pt-based nanoparticles, or to totally get rid of Pt with the metal-free electrocatalytic ability themselves. The abundant nanostructures and morphologies, tunable compositions, high surface area, good conductivity, small volume expansion, as well as the low cost and environmental benignity make the carbon-based nanostructures have great potential as electrode materials of supercapacitors and lithium-sulphur batteries. In this talk I will give a brief introduction to the progressive advancements in our group about the synthesis [1,2], performance [3-9] and mechanism [8-10] of the carbon-based nanostructures, especially the nanocages, for this kind of energy conversion and storage. Special attention will be paid to the materials design by doping the carbon-based nanostructures with electron-rich N [3-5,8], electron-deficient B [9], and the both [10] to elucidate the correlation of the performance with the doping microstructures, which is a general interesting issue in developing the advanced carbon-based energy materials.

Abstract:Multifunctional micro-/nanomaterials featuring functional superiority and high value-added physicochemical nature have received immense attention in electrochemical energy storage. Microfluidic synthesis has become an emergent technology for massively producing multifunctional micro-/nanomaterials with tunable microstructure and morphology due to its rapid mass/heat transfer and precise fluid controllability. In this review, the latest progresses and achievements in microfluidic-synthesized multifunctional micro-/nanomaterials are summarized via reaction process intensification, multifunctional micro-/nanostructural engineering and electrochemical energy storage applications. The reaction process intensification mechanisms of various micro-/nanomaterials, including quantum dots (QDs), metal materials, conducting polymers, metallic oxides, polyanionic compounds, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and two-dimensional (2D) materials, are discussed. Especially, the multifunctional structural engineering principles of as-fabricated micro-/nanomaterials, such as vertically aligned structure, heterostructure, core-shell structure, and tunable microsphere, are introduced. Subsequently, the electrochemical energy storage application of as-prepared multifunctional micro-/nanomaterials is clarified in supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, all-vanadium redox flow batteries, and dielectric capacitors. Finally, the current problems and future forecasts are illustrated.

Abstract:Abstract Nanomaterials are known to exhibit a number of interesting physical and chemical properties for various applications, including energy conversion and storage, nanoscale electronics, sensors and actuators, photonics devices and even for biomedical purposes. In the past decade, laser as a synthetic technique and laser as a microfabrication technique facilitated nanomaterial preparation and nanostructure construction, including the laser processing-induced carbon and non-carbon nanomaterials, hierarchical structure construction, patterning, heteroatom doping, sputtering etching, and so on. The laser-induced nanomaterials and nanostructures have extended broad applications in electronic devices, such as light–thermal conversion, batteries, supercapacitors, sensor devices, actuators and electrocatalytic electrodes. Here, the recent developments in the laser synthesis of carbon-based and non-carbon-based nanomaterials are comprehensively summarized. An extensive overview on laser-enabled electronic devices for various applications is depicted. With the rapid progress made in the research on nanomaterial preparation through laser synthesis and laser microfabrication technologies, laser synthesis and microfabrication toward energy conversion and storage will undergo fast development.

Abstract:Nature-inspired nanomaterial is one of the well-investigated nanostructures with favorable properties exhibiting high surface area, more active sites, and tailorable porosity. In energy storage systems, nature-inspired nanomaterials have been highly anticipated to obtain the desired properties. Such nanostructures of nature-inspired nanomaterials include porous carbon, metal oxides/sulfides/phosphides/selenides/hydroxides, and others that have shown exemplary performance in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the growing studies of nature-inspired nanomaterials have not fully been explored and summarized for numerous applications. This review reports the development of nature-inspired nanomaterials from different applications. Notably, we report the current methodologies and challenges for obtaining nature-inspired nanomaterials for supercapacitors, different types of batteries, catalysis, and substrates. The review ends with addressing the challenges and future perspectives of nature-inspired nanostructures toward their commercialization in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. Abstract:Self-assembly is a bioinspired strategy to craft materials for renewable and clean energy technologies. In plants, the alignment and assembly of the light-harvesting protein machinery in the green leaf optimize the ability to efficiently convert light from the sun to form chemical bonds. In artificial systems, strategies based on self-assembly using noncovalent interactions offer the possibility to mimic this functional correlation among molecules to optimize photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and energy storage. One of the long-term objectives of the field described here as supramolecular energy materials is to learn how to design soft materials containing light-harvesting assemblies and catalysts to generate fuels and useful chemicals. Supramolecular energy materials also hold great potential in the design of systems for photovoltaics in which intermolecular interactions in self-assembled structures, for example, in electron donor and acceptor phases, maximize charge transport and avoid exciton recombination. Possible pathways to integrate organic and inorganic structures by templating strategies and electrodeposition to create materials relevant to energy challenges including photoconductors and supercapacitors are also described. The final topic discussed is the synthesis of hybrid perovskites in which organic molecules are used to modify both structure and functions, which may include chemical stability, photovoltaics, and light emission.

Abstract:In order to fulfill the multiple requirements for energy production, storage, and utilization in the future, the conventional planar configuration of current energy conversion/storage devices has to be reformed, since technological evolution has promoted the efficiency of the corresponding devices to be close to the theoretical values. One promising strategy is to construct multifunctional 1D nanostructure arrays to replace their planar counterparts for device fabrication, ascribing to the significant superiorities of such 1D nanostructure arrays. In the last three decades, technologies based on anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) templates have turned out to be valuable meaning for the realization of 1D nanostructures and have attracted tremendous interest. In this review, recent progress in energy‐related devices equipped with heterogeneous 1D nanostructure arrays that fabricated through the assistance of AAO templates is highlighted. Particular emphasis is given on how to develop efficient devices via optimizing the componential and morphological parameters of the 1D nanostructure arrays. Finally, aspects relevant to the further improvement of device performance are discussed.

Abstract:Heterostructures composed of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets and zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention because of the synergy arising from the coupling interactions between the two mixed-dimensional components. Despite recent advances, it remains a challenge to fabricate 2D/0D heterostructures with clean and accessible surfaces, which is highly desirable for the diversity of catalytic, sensing, and energy storage applications. Herein, we report a generalized methodology that enables the facile assembly of sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures with facilitated mass-transport channels and exposed surface active sites. A ligand-exchange strategy with HBF4 is employed to strip off the surface-coating ligands of colloidal NPs, rendering them positively charged and dispersible in polar solvents. This allows subsequent electrostatic assembly of NPs with oppositely charged 2D nanosheets to afford sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures. The barely covered surfaces and the advantageous architectures of such sandwich-like 0D/2D/0D heterostructures induce the desired synergistic effect, making them particularly suitable for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. We demonstrate this by employing MXene/NiFe2O4 and MXene/Fe3O4 heterostructures for high-performance electrocatalytic oxygen evolution and supercapacitors, respectively.
