Abstract:The three-dimensional method of characteristics(MOC) can solve neutron transport equation for arbitrary geometry accurately.However,the MOC has some drawbacks: the convergence speed is slow and very time consuming.As a result,the research of acceleration of MOC is carried out.Compared with the CPU computing,the GPU computing,which is one of the most promising high performance computing,can achieve higher computing speed but with lower cost.And the development of general computing on GPU can be simplified with CUDA.To reduce the computing time and increase the computing efficiency,the study of three-dimensional MOC is performed and applied to the three-dimensional MOC code TCM.The computing results confirm the excellent acceleration of the code running on GPU.

Abstract:The Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are increasingly becoming the primary computational platform in the scientific fields, due to its cost-effectiveness and massively parallel processing capability. On the other hand, the coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) method has been one of the most popular techniques to accelerate the neutron transport calculation. The GPU is employed into the method of characteristics (MOC) accelerated by two-level CMFD to solve the neutron transport equation. In this work, the Jacobi method, the successive over-relaxation (SOR) method with red-black ordering, and the preconditioned generalized minimum residual (PGMRES) method are applied to solve the linear system under the framework of CMFD. The performance of these linear system solvers is characterized on both CPU (Central Processing Unit) and GPU. The two-dimensional (2-D) C5G7 benchmark problem and an extended mock quarter-core problem are tested to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm with double precision, as well as the feasibility of massive parallelization. Numerical results demonstrate that the desired accuracy is maintained. Moreover, the results show that the few-group CMFD acceleration is effective to accelerate the multi-group CMFD calculation. The PGMRES method shows remarkable convergence characteristics compared to the Jacobi and the SOR methods. However, the SOR method shows better performance on GPU for solving the linear system of CMFD calculation, which reaches about 2,400x speedup on GPU with two-level CMFD acceleration compared to the CPU-based MOC calculation.

Abstract:As a novel kind of particle method for explicit dynamics, the finite particle method (FPM) does not require the formation or solution of global matrices, and the evaluations of the element equivalent forces and particle displacements are decoupled in nature, thus making this method suitable for parallelization. The FPM also requires an acceleration strategy to overcome the heavy computational burden of its explicit framework for time-dependent dynamic analysis. To this end, a GPU-accelerated parallel strategy for the FPM is proposed in this paper. By taking advantage of the independence of each step of the FPM workflow, a generic parallelized computational framework for multiple types of analysis is established. Using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), the GPU implementations of the main tasks of the FPM, such as evaluating and assembling the element equivalent forces and solving the kinematic equations for particles, are elaborated through careful thread management and memory optimization. Performance tests show that speedup ratios of 8, 25 and 48 are achieved for beams, hexahedral solids and triangular shells, respectively. For examples consisting of explicit dynamic analyses of shells and solids, comparisons with Abaqus using 1 to 8 CPU cores validate the accuracy of the results and demonstrate a maximum speed improvement of a factor of 11.2.

Abstract:The moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method performs well in simulating incompressible flows with free surfaces. Despite its applicability, the MPS method suffers from the fundamental instability problem and high computational cost in its practical application. Substantial research has been conducted on improving the stability and accuracy of the MPS method. Moreover, graphics processing units (GPUs), which are multi-processors that execute many three-dimensional geometric processes at high speed, provide unprecedented capability for scientific computations. However, the usage of a single GPU card is not sufficient for engineering applications that require several million particles that predict the desired physical processes, because the available memory space is insufficient. In this work, the dynamic stability (DS) algorithm and particle shifting (PS) algorithm have been used to overcome the instability and inaccuracies caused by tensile instability and non-uniform particle distribution, respectively. Based on the stable MPS method, a GPU-based MPS code that uses the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) language has been developed. An efficient neighborhood particle search is performed using an indirect method, and the matrix for the pressure Poisson equation (PPE) is assembled in parallel. Based on the single-GPU version, a multi-GPU MPS code has been developed. The approach uses a non-geometric dynamic domain decomposition method that provides homogeneous load balancing whereby different portions (subdomains) of the physical system under study are assigned to different GPUs. Communication between devices is achieved with the use of a message passing interface (MPI). Based on the neighborhood particle search, the techniques for building and updating the “halo” are described in detail. The speed-up of the single-GPU version is analyzed for different numbers of particles, and the scalability of the multi-GPU version is analyzed for different numbers of particles and different numbers of GPUs. Last, an application with more than 107 particles is presented to show the capability of the code in handling large-scale simulations.
Multi-GPU Hybrid Programming Accelerated Three-Dimensional Phase-Field Model in Binary Alloy

Abstract:In the process of dendritic growth simulation, the computational efficiency and the problem scales have extremely important influence on simulation efficiency of three-dimensional phase-field model. Thus, seeking for high performance calculation method to improve the computational efficiency and to expand the problem scales has a great significance to the research of microstructure of the material. A high performance calculation method based on MPI+CUDA hybrid programming model is introduced. Multi-GPU is used to implement quantitative numerical simulations of three-dimensional phase-field model in binary alloy under the condition of multi-physical processes coupling. The acceleration effect of different GPU nodes on different calculation scales is explored. On the foundation of multi-GPU calculation model that has been introduced, two optimization schemes, Non-blocking communication optimization and overlap of MPI and GPU computing optimization, are proposed. The results of two optimization schemes and basic multi-GPU model are compared. The calculation results show that the use of multi-GPU calculation model can improve the computational efficiency of three-dimensional phase-field obviously, which is 13 times to single GPU, and the problem scales have been expanded to 8193. The feasibility of two optimization schemes is shown, and the overlap of MPI and GPU computing optimization has better performance, which is 1.7 times to basic multi-GPU model, when 21 GPUs are used.
Generalized coarse-mesh finite difference acceleration for the method of characteristics

Abstract:Based on generalized coarse mesh rebalance (GCMR) method, this paper proposes a new acceleration method for the method of characteristics (MOC) in unstructured meshes: the generalized coarse-mesh finite difference (GCMFD) method. The GCMFD method, which applies equivalent width of coarse mesh to establish the finite difference discretization, can use unstructured coarse meshes composed of adjacent fine meshes to speed up the MOC iteration. The convergence property of the GCMFD method is controlled by width factor. However, the optimal width factor cannot be given a priori. Method of adjusting width factor automatically is proposed in this paper. Finally, the GCMFD method is adopted in the 3-D neutron transport MOC code TCM. Numerical tests show that the GCMFD, using generalized-geometry coarse meshes, can accelerate the MOC iteration with good speedup.

Abstract:As one of the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian methods, the material point method (MPM) owns intrinsic advantages in simulation of large deformation problems by combining the merits of the Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches. Significant computational intensity is involved in the calculations of the MPM due to its very fine mesh needed to achieve a sufficiently high accuracy. A new multiple‐GPU parallel strategy is developed based on a single‐root complex architecture of the computer purely within a CUDA environment. Peer‐to‐Peer (P2P) communication between the GPUs is performed to exchange the information of the crossing particles and ghost element nodes, which is faster than the heavy send/receive operations between different computers through the infiniBand network. Domain decomposition is performed to split the whole computational task over the GPUs with a number of subdomains. The computations within each subdomain are allocated on a corresponding GPU using an enhanced “Particle‐List” scheme to tackle the data race during the interpolation from associated particles to common nodes. The acceleration effect of the parallelization is evaluated with two benchmarks cases, mini‐slump test after a dam break and cone penetration test in clay, where the maximum speedups with 1 and 8 GPUs are 88 and 604, respectively.

Acceleration of a Production-Level Unstructured Grid Finite Volume CFD Code on GPU

Abstract:Due to the complex topological relationship, poor data locality, and data racing problems in unstructured CFD computing, how to parallelize the finite volume method algorithms in shared memory to efficiently explore the hardware capabilities of many-core GPUs has become a significant challenge. Based on a production-level unstructured CFD software, three shared memory parallel programming strategies, atomic operation, colouring, and reduction were designed and implemented by deeply analysing its computing behaviour and memory access mode. Several data locality optimization methods—grid reordering, loop fusion, and multi-level memory access—were proposed. Aimed at the sequential attribute of LU-SGS solution, two methods based on cell colouring and hyperplane were implemented. All the parallel methods and optimization techniques implemented were comprehensively analysed and evaluated by the three-dimensional grid of the M6 wing and CHN-T1 aeroplane. The results show that using the Cuthill–McKee grid renumbering and loop fusion optimization techniques can improve memory access performance by 10%. The proposed reduction strategy, combined with multi-level memory access optimization, has a significant acceleration effect, speeding up the hot spot subroutine with data races three times. Compared with the serial CPU version, the overall speed-up of the GPU codes can reach 127. Compared with the parallel CPU version, the overall speed-up of the GPU codes can achieve more than thirty times the result in the same Message Passing Interface (MPI) ranks.

Multiple-GPU accelerated high-order gas-kinetic scheme on three-dimensional unstructured meshes

Abstract:Recently, successes have been achieved for the high-order gas-kinetic schemes (HGKS) on unstructured meshes for compressible flows. In this paper, to accelerate the computation, HGKS is implemented with the graphical processing unit (GPU) using the compute unified device architecture (CUDA). HGKS on unstructured meshes is a fully explicit scheme, and the acceleration framework can be developed based on the cell-level parallelism. For single-GPU computation, the connectivity of geometric information is generated for the requirement of data localization and independence. Based on such data structure, the kernels and corresponding girds of CUDA are set. With the one-to-one mapping between the indices of cells and CUDA threads, the single-GPU computation using CUDA can be implemented for HGKS. For multiple-GPU computation, the domain decomposition and data exchange need to be taken into account. The domain is decomposed into subdomains by METIS, and the MPI processes are created for the control of each process and communication among GPUs. With reconstruction of connectivity and adding ghost cells, the main configuration of CUDA for single-GPU can be inherited by each GPU. The benchmark cases for compressible flows, including accuracy test and flow passing through a sphere, are presented to assess the numerical performance of HGKS with Nvidia RTX A5000 and Tesla V100 GPUs. For single-GPU computation, compared with the parallel central processing unit (CPU) code running on the Intel Xeon Gold 5120 CPU with open multi-processing (OpenMP) directives, 5x speedup is achieved by RTX A5000 and 9x speedup is achieved by Tesla V100. For multiple-GPU computation, HGKS code scales properly with the increasing number of GPU. Numerical results confirm the excellent performance of multiple-GPU accelerated HGKS on unstructured meshes.

Abstract:The National Center for Atmospheric Research released a global atmosphere model named Community Atmosphere Model version 5.0 (CAM5), which aimed to provide a global climate simulation for meteorological research. Among them, the cloud microphysics scheme is extremely time-consuming, so developing efficient parallel algorithms faces large-scale and chronic simulation challenges. Due to the wide application of GPU in the fields of science and engineering and the NVIDIA’s mature and stable CUDA platform, we ported the code to GPU to accelerate computing. In this paper, by analyzing the parallelism of CAM5 cloud microphysical schemes (CAM5 CMS) in different dimensions, corresponding GPU-based one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) parallel acceleration algorithms are proposed. Among them, the 2D parallel algorithm exploits finer-grained parallelism. In addition, we present a data transfer optimization method between the CPU and GPU to further improve the overall performance. Finally, GPU version of the CAM5 CMS (GPU-CMS) was implemented. GPU acceleration of an iterative scheme for gas-kinetic model equations with memory reduction techniques

Abstract:This paper presents a Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) acceleration method of an iterative scheme for gas-kinetic model equations. Unlike the previous GPU parallelization of explicit kinetic schemes, this work features a fast converging iterative scheme. The memory reduction techniques in this method enable full three-dimensional (3D) solution of kinetic model equations in contemporary GPUs usually with a limited memory capacity that otherwise would need terabytes of memory. The GPU algorithm is validated against the DSMC simulation of the 3D lid-driven cavity flow and the supersonic rarefied gas flow past a cube with grids size up to 0.7 trillion points in the phase space. The performance of the GPU algorithm is assessed by comparing with the corresponding parallel CPU program using Message Passing Interface (MPI). The profiling on several models of GPUs shows that the algorithm has a medium to high level of utilization of the GPUs' computing and memory resources. A $190\times$ speedup can be achieved on the Tesla K40 GPUs against a single core of Intel Xeon-E5-2680v3 CPU for the 3D lid-driven cavity flow.

Parallelization Method for Three Dimensional MOC Calculation

Abstract:A parallelization method based on angular decomposition for the three dimensional MOC was designed.To improve the parallel efficiency,the directions were pre-grouped and the groups were assembled to minimize the communication.The improved parallelization method was applied to the three dimensional MOC code TCM.The numerical results show that the calculation results of parallelization method are agreed with serial calculation results.The parallel efficiency gets obvious increase after the communication optimized and load balance.

Abstract:Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations based on the ideal MHD equations have become a powerful tool for modeling phenomena in a wide range of applications including laboratory, astrophysical, and space plasmas. In general, high-resolution methods for solving the ideal MHD equations are computationally expensive and Beowulf clusters or even supercomputers are often used to run the codes that implemented these methods. With the advent of the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), modern graphics processing units (GPUs) provide an alternative approach to parallel computing for scientific simulations. In this paper we present, to the best of the authorʼs knowledge, the first implementation of MHD simulations entirely on GPUs with CUDA, named GPU-MHD, to accelerate the simulation process. GPU-MHD supports both single and double precision computations. A series of numerical tests have been performed to validate the correctness of our code. Accuracy evaluation by comparing single and double precision computation results is also given. Performance measurements of both single and double precision are conducted on both the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 (GT200 architecture) and GTX 480 (Fermi architecture) graphics cards. These measurements show that our GPU-based implementation achieves between one and two orders of magnitude of improvement depending on the graphics card used, the problem size, and the precision when comparing to the original serial CPU MHD implementation. In addition, we extend GPU-MHD to support the visualization of the simulation results and thus the whole MHD simulation and visualization process can be performed entirely on GPUs.

Abstract:In order to keep the GPU accelerated Monte Carlo code to be able to handle 3D geometry and continuous energy point cross section ,the method of geometry treat-ment acceleration by GPUs was proposed .The fission neutrons were organized into a neutron vector ,and the geometry part of the Monte Carlo code was transplanted to GPUs .To reduce the negative impact of data communication on the performance of the accelerated code ,CUDA streams were applied to design the asynchronous parallel algo-rithm .Two benchmarks including the fast reactor facility and the 17 × 17 PWR assem-bly were used for performance test .The results are satisfying and demonstrate that the speedup factor is close to the theoretical one for the local acceleration method .
Multilevel Interior Penalty Methods on GPUs

Abstract:We present a matrix-free multigrid method for high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element methods with GPU acceleration. A performance analysis is conducted, comparing various data and compute layouts. Smoother implementations are optimized through localization and fast diagonalization techniques. Leveraging conflict-free access patterns in shared memory, arithmetic throughput of up to 39% of the peak performance on Nvidia A100 GPUs are achieved. Experimental results affirm the effectiveness of mixed-precision approaches and MPI parallelization in accelerating algorithms. Furthermore, an assessment of solver efficiency and robustness is provided across both two and three dimensions, with applications to Poisson problems.

Abstract:With the increasing requirement of high computational power in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) field, the graphic processing units (GPUs) with great floating-point computing capability play more important roles. This work explores the porting of an Euler solver from central processing units (CPUs) to three different CPU/GPU heterogeneous hardware platforms using MUSCL and NND schemes, and then the computational acceleration of one-dimensional (1D) Riemann problem and two-dimensional (2D) flow past a forward-facing step is investigated. Based on hardware structures, memory models and programming methods, the working manner of heterogeneous systems was firstly introduced in this paper. Subsequently, three different heterogeneous methods employed in the current study were presented in detail, while porting all parts of the solver loop to GPU possessed the best performance among them. Several optimization strategies suitable for the solver were adopted to achieve substantial execution speedups, while using shared memory on GPU was relatively rarely reported in CFD literature. Finally, the simulation of 1D Riemann verified the reliability of the modified codes on GPU, demonstrating strong ability in capturing discontinuities of both schemes. The two cases with their 1D computational domains discretized into 10,000 cells both realized a speedup exceeding 25, compared to that executed on a single-core CPU. In simulation of the 2D step flow, we came to the highest speedups of 260 for MUSCL scheme with 800 × 400 mesh size and 144 for NND scheme with 400 × 200 computational domain, respectively.

Abstract:The rigorous model for calculating the time evolution of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) in batch free radical polymerization processes consists of a very large number of differential and algebraic equations (DAEs). A sequential variable decoupling (SVD) method has been proposed to enable the calculation in a sequential mode. With this SVD method, the calculation of MWD can be achieved for any reasonably large chain length number. In this paper, we aim to further accelerate the calculation of MWD with a parallel computing method. The algorithm analysis proves that the proposed method has the best efficiency in parallel computing. The NVIDIA Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) is applied for the parallel computing with the advantages of high parallel performance for float computing and low energy cost. The Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) provided by NVIDIA is used for the programming. Running on a Tesla C 1060 GPU, the application shows that the parallel computing implementation speeds up the calculation of the MWD model by a factor of 7.3. Good agreement with the sequential result is also guaranteed.

Abstract:The Monte Carlo neutron transport method can be naturally parallelized by multi-core architectures due to the dependency between particles during the simulation. The GPU+ CPU heterogeneous parallel mode has become an increasingly popular way of parallelism in the field of scientific supercomputing. Thus, this work focuses on the GPU acceleration method for the Monte Carlo criticality simulation, as well as the computational efficiency that GPUs can bring. The "neutron transport step" is introduced to increase the GPU thread occupancy. In order to test the sensitivity of the MC code's complexity, a 1D one-group code and a 3D multi-group general purpose code are respectively transplanted to GPUs, and the acceleration effects are compared. The result of numerical experiments shows considerable acceleration effect of the "neutron transport step" strategy. However, the performance comparison between the 1D code and the 3D code indicates the poor scalability of MC codes on GPUs.
Acceleration and Parallelization of Arbitrary Trajectory Based Three-Dimensional Method of Characteristics

Abstract:The method of characteristics based on arbitrary trajectory adopts interpolation method to deal with the reflective boundary, which can break the restriction on the choice of trajectory layouts and quadrature sets. An acceleration and parallelization scheme is used to reduce the computational time. A generalized coarse-mesh finite difference (GCMFD) method which can be performed on generalized geometry is applied for acceleration. To effectively accelerate, we extend a single GCMFD method to the two-level GCMFD method, one level for the spatial acceleration and the other for the energy group acceleration. On the other hand, a parallelization method based on message-passing model uses an angular decomposition scheme. By grouping the directions to satisfy the reflective relation can effectively reduce the data communications. The numerical results show a good performance on reducing the number of iterations and speeding up the code after the acceleration and parallelization.
