Abstract:Phase unwrapping is a key step inD-InSAR(Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and directly affectsthe precisionof displacement fieldobtained by this technology.In addition, a prerequisite of correctphase unwrapping is the continuity ofinterferogram becausephase unwrapping process totally relies on phase offsetsbetween pixels. Thus isolated land regionswould lead to incorrect phase unwrapping results. Inorder to unify the phase unwrapped results ofisolated regions, two methods are proposed in this paper. The first method use GPS data as reference, while the second curve fitting method needs no external data and reconstructsrelative relationship between isolated regions. Compared with displacement field ofadjacent track, unified resultsfrom these twomethods are proved tobe reasonable.Moreover, we analyze results of both methods and discuss in whatcondition theycan be applied.

Abstract:A mask‐based region growing approach was proposed for phase unwrapping .The residues were connected by zero‐value pixels that were then served as mask .The mask and the original quality map were combined into a new quality map .Guided by the new quality map ,unwrapping was conducted within multiple regions .The regions were merged by adjusting the offset between one another .Both simulated and real MRI data were used to verify the proposed algorithm .Results show the advantage of the proposed approach over the recent region‐growing phase unwrapping method (PHUN) in accuracy .

Abstract:Vegetation coverage is an important indicator for forecasting geological disasters in mountainous areas such as landslide. However, it is a challenge to extract vegetation coverage in complex terrain from SAR image. A major problem is that the variation of the backscatter coefficient of the same object varies with the local incidence angle. As a result, a large number of discrete points appear in the classification results. Focus on this problem, a region-based method of vegetation coverage monitoring has been presented in this paper. Based on the results of yamaguchi decomposition and SVM algorithm, the Watershed algorithm is used to over-segment the image and regions are merged on a pixel-voting basis. When the modified method was applied on RADARSAT-2 data, the research results show that the completeness and correctness are improved compared with the method based on yamaguchi decomposition and svm algorithm.

Abstract:Two-dimensional phase unwrapping (PhU) is one of the most important processing steps in optical phase-shifting interferometry. It aims to reconstruct the continuous phase field, but in fact,,it becomes very difficult to perform the PhU due to the existence of noise, low modulation, under sampling, discontinuities or other defects. For solving the problem, we present a new PhU method which is based on the local parameter-guided fitting plane. It relies on the basic plane-approximated assumption for phase value of local pixels and is guided by our proposed parameter map Modulation-Gradient and Pseudo-Correlation (MGPC) parameter map. This new map is the combination of fringe modulation and wrapped phase, thus it's reliable in estimating the quality or goodness of phase data. Meanwhile, the adoption of fitting plane for the 3x3 window of pixels makes the process of PhU very fast. In applications, we offer the simulated and the experimental data to compare our method with the two previously reported path-following unwrapping algorithms. The unwrapped results show our proposed PhU method not only is efficient, but also has higher noise robustness in recovering the true phase field.

Abstract:In this paper, the consistency and inconsistency of the two-dimensional phase field is discussed in detail. The mathematical framework of the main phase unwrapping algorithms is also provided. The residue-cut method, the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, and the minimum cost flow method are compared and analyzed through numerical tests. It is found that the accuracy of the minimum cost flow method is better than the other two methods. The branch cut method is the most efficient among the three algorithms in computation. However the minimum cost flow method is the least efficient in computation. Each phase unwrapping algorithm has its own advantage and disadvantage, so we should choose the adequate algorithm for the phase unwrapping according to the character of the interferogram.

Abstract:Phase unwrapping is an imperative step in interferometry processing that has a significant influence on the quality of subsequent products. Many existing phase unwrapping algorithms have been designed to solve for the unwrapped phase under the assumption that noisy areas with discontinuities are small or that reliable continuity can be recovered there. They attempt to restore the unwrapped phase by using continuity and data quality measures, such as residues. However, when the observing field is divided into separate zones of continuous phase due to a large range of noise, such as those caused by rivers or mountains, it is difficult to use traditional phase unwrapping techniques to recover global continuity in these noisy areas. To address this challenge, we present a two-dimensional parallel phase unwrapping method that is designed to handle cases where the continuity of the phase is separated by closed noisy loops. Based on continuity distances, this method aims to identify continuous regions that are free of hidden phase discontinuities and restore phase continuity between the separated regions. A heterogeneous residual diffusion scheme is used to restore the unwrapped phase outside continuous regions. The parallel algorithm for extracting continuous regions, restoring continuity between the regions, and diffusing residuals was implemented on a GPU device to increase the processing efficiency. We applied our method to typical TanDEM-X data covering rivers, islands, and mountains and demonstrated that it is a promising solution for large-scale, heavily noisy phase unwrapping problems.

Abstract:After discussing Schofield's fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, a (weighted) discrete-cosine-transform-based (DCT-based) phase-unwrapping (PU) algorithm is described. The algorithm could unwrap some high-phase-variation map which the FFT algorithm could not solve. Although the DCT algorithm is derived from Schofield's FFT PU algorithm, unlike FFT, it avoids the mirroring operation in implementing the boundary conditions so that it has higher efficiency in PU. Furthermore, in order to improve the reliability and noise robustness, we introduce the phase derivative variance (PDV) quality weight extracted from quality map into the DCT algorithm. The unwrapped results of both the computer-simulated and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IFSAR) data demonstrate that the (weighted) DCT PU algorithm is generally effective, especially in dealing with the high-phase-variation and/or irregular-phase-distribution maps.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) array InSAR is a new type of single-flight 3D SAR imaging system with the advantages of high coherence and resolution. However, due to the low altitude of the platform, the elevation ambiguity of the system is smaller than the maximal terrain elevation. Since the spatial phase unwrapping is conducted based on the assumption of phase continuity, the inappropriate ambiguity will cause significant unwrapping errors. In this work, a 3D phase unwrapping algorithm assisted by image segmentation is proposed to address this issue. The Markov random field (MRF) is utilized for image segmentation. The optimal spatial phase unwrapping network is achieved based on the segmentation results. The asymptotic 3D phase unwrapping is adopted to get the refined 3D reconstruction. Results based on the real airborne array-InSAR data show that the proposed method effectively improves the elevation ambiguity.

Abstract:Multitemporal synthetic aperture radar interferometry (MT-InSAR) is able to reconstruct a 3-D surface model with high precision but requires a long waiting time to get the multibaseline synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The array InSAR system can acquire multibaseline images in a single flight, which significantly improves the practical capability of 3-D reconstruction. However, the array InSAR system with many channels has very high complexity in both system and processing because of cross-channel calibration and decoupling. Thus, reducing the number of channels requires the investigation of the 3-D reconstruction algorithm to be suitable for sparse array InSAR images. This work proposed an asymptotic 3-D phase unwrapping (PU) algorithm for 3-D reconstruction using sparse array InSAR images, i.e., as few as three or four channels. A 2-D (space) + 1-D (baseline) PU framework is developed to improve the reliability of the 3-D PU, and a novel asymptotic strategy is proposed for the combination of the short–long baseline interferogram. Using successful unwrapping (SU) criteria, the bounds of the possible baseline combinations and the expected minimal coherence are derived, respectively. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is the reliable PU with very sparse channels and an analysis of the possible baseline combinations. The experimental results by both the simulated and real data show that the proposed method can achieve a 3-D reconstruction using only three-pass array InSAR images and optimize the baseline design for the array InSAR system.

Abstract:This paper introduces a procedure of Interferometric SAR(InSAR)processing,including the algorithms of image registration and phase unwrapping.A coarse-to-fine fast registration framework,based on the mean square difference function,is proposed.Aiming at the interferogram with large size and dense residues,two unwrapping algorithms are presented:one is the multi-patches method to connect opposite residues,and another one the center expanding method to search opposite residues.These two algorithms can avoid long branch cuts and excessive connection of residues,and are well employed in the experiments of ENVISAT-ASAR datasets.Compared with conventional methods,our results of registration and unwrapping show good advantages in InSAR data processing.

Abstract:To recover original full phase values in inherently wrapped output, phase unwrapping has been one of the key techniques in digital image processing. However, to unwrap the phase of a large interferogram with dense residues, a conventional path-following algorithm may produce retrieval errors caused by placing long branch cuts and repetitive connection of residues. In this paper, two unwrapping algorithms, the method of multiple patches connecting opposite residues and the method of centre expansion searching opposite residues, are presented. Some examples of Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT) Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) datasets demonstrate improvement compared to conventional methods in Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data processing.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple isoclinic phase map unwrapping method is proposed to retrieve map with ambiguities at photoelastic isotropic points. Regional phase unwrapping method is also utilized to enhance the retrieving efficiency after all phase inconsistencies have been fully detected and branch cutting works have been properly done to ensure blockings of all the paths which could cause incorrect integrations while involuntarily crossing them. The correctly retrieved isoclinic data are then fed into isochromatic formulation, and as a consequence an inconsistency free isochromatic phase map will be obtained. This map can be unwrapped by any simple and fast unwrapping algorithm accurately and effectively. Circular disk and ring under diametric compression samples are both applied for the verification of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show the proposed algorithm can successfully solve the annoying problems occurred at photoelastic isotropic points with a processing time of roughly 2 seconds for a 420 x 420 pixels map by a general personal computer.

Abstract:Interferometry synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is essential for monitoring surface deformation and geological hazards. InSAR applications in complex mountainous regions are challenging due to high noise levels and large phase gradient variations, which make it difficult to obtain accurate and efficient phase unwrapping results. As a result, the development of fast and high-precision phase unwrapping methods in these areas has become an urgent research topic in the current InSAR field. In response to this challenge, this study proposes a fast and high-precision phase unwrapping method specifically designed for complex mountainous regions. The method includes a sliding window singular value denoising phase gradient correction unwrapping algorithm (SDPC) for obtaining precise phase unwrapping results. A fast-phase unwrapping algorithm based on FPUNet networks is proposed by integrating deep learning techniques with the SDPC results. By integrating these two methods, the phase unwrapping speed can be accelerated while maintaining the unwrapping accuracy. The Dongchuan District of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, is used as the subject of this article. Because the true phase cannot be known using the measured interferometric phase data, simulated data are introduced to verify and demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the method presented in this article. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for phase unwrapping, even in complex mountainous regions characterized by high noise and large gradient variations. Moreover, this approach significantly enhances the phase unwrapping speed. The presented method addresses the inefficiency and inaccuracy of InSAR in phase unwrapping in complex mountainous regions.

Abstract:2-D phase unwrapping (PU) is one of the key steps in the processing of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data. PU in large-gradient areas has always been a fundamental problem. The phase continuity assumption makes it difficult to obtain ideal PU results in large-gradient areas. To address this issue, in this letter, we propose a phase slicing 2-D PU method using the L 1 -norm that can effectively reduce the phase gradient interval. First, the study area is analyzed using an external digital elevation model (DEM) and interferometric phase information to obtain the number of phase slices and assisted phases. Then, we cut the interferometric phase to obtain the sliced interferometric phase and use the single-baseline (SB) L 1 -norm PU method to unwrap the sliced interferometric phase. Finally, the unwrapped phase is recovered by summing the sliced unwrapped phases and assisted phases. Experiments are conducted with simulated and TanDEM-X InSAR data sets. Compared with the representative SB-PU method, the proposed method can effectively avoid the problem of large gradients in PU.

The local operator of path-following algorithm and the global operator of least-square algorithm are the essential characteristics of the two unwrapping algorithms.
