Abstract:Analysis of GEONET observations covering the entire territory of Japan shows that the great Tohoku-oki earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 off the east coast of Honshu in Japan caused an eastward movement of the northern part of the island by as much as 5.3 m. The GPS data from TEONET in China were used to derive far-field coseismic displacements and to assess the impact of the Tohoku-oki earthquake on crustal deformation in eastern China. The results reveal that the coseismic horizontal displacements induced by the earthquake are the level of millimeters to centimeters in North and Northeast China, with a maximum of 35 mm. Strain analysis also indicates that the earthquake resulted in an increase in the tensile strain on the north-northeast trending faults in North and Northeast China. The tensile strain imposed on the Yilan-Yitong and Dunhua-Mishan faults is more significant than that imposed on the faults in North China; the maximum normal strain reaches about 40 nano-strain. Considering that the static Coulomb stress loaded on the faults is limited, its effect on the regional seismic activity may not be significant.

Abstract:Permanent displacement identification is one of key topics in near-fault ground-motion research. A new method based on Hermit interpolation and flatness technique is proposed to determine permanent displacements, since the Iwan law is not applicable in Mw9.0 Tohoku earthquake permanent displacement recognition. The method is then tested by coseismic displacements resulted from GPS station nearby. Results show that: the causes for strong motion record baseline drift are very complex so that Iwan method is not suitable for permanent displacements identification in the Mw9.0 Tohoku Earthquake, while the new baseline correction method combining Hermit interpolation and flatness technique is suitable for permanent displacement analysis of near-fault ground motion in 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku Earthquake.

Abstract:The mechanism and rupture process of the giant 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) are still poorly understood due to lack of permanent near-field observations. Using seismic arrival times recorded by dense seismograph networks on land and at ocean floor, we determine a detailed seismic tomography model of the megathrust zone beneath the Tohoku forearc. Our results show that the coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake initiated at a boundary between a down-dip high-velocity anomaly and an up-dip low-velocity anomaly. The slow anomaly at shallow depths near the Japan trench may reflect low-rigidity materials that are close to the free surface, resulting in large slip and weak high-frequency radiation. Our new tomographic model can account for not only large slip near the trench but also weak high-frequency radiation from the shallow rupture areas.
Focal mechanism solutions of the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence and their geodynamical implications

Abstract:The stress state of Japan Sea region and its evolution are both concerned greatly by geoscientists. In this paper, we study Harvard CMT solutions of the March 11, 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence from March 11th, 2011 to March 15th, 2012 by cluster analysis and find that they might be roughly sorted to four groups. The first group are low-angle thrust events, which are the same as the main shock and are mostly interplate events. The second group events are normal-fault earthquakes with principal extensional direction roughly pointing to E-W direction. Most of these earthquakes were located in the fore-arc uplift region of the Pacific plate, while some others occurred in the fore-arc accretionary wedge. The third group events are also normal-fault events mainly occurred in the fore-arc accretionary wedge though their principal extensional directions roughly parallel the Japan Trench. The forth group are reverse earthquakes with principal compressional directions roughly along N-S direction. We observe that Harvard CMT solutions of 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake sequence are obviously different from before. They show that Tohoku-Oki Earthquake sequence have released most of elastic energy in the main shock area. As a result, Pacific Plate and North America Plate have decoupled in the main rupture zone, which lowered the E-W compressional stress in Japan Sea and Northeastern China. However, Japan Sea Subduction Zone has not completely decoupled with North American Plate, even though the stress level in this region is lowered now. We claim that releasing of accumulated stress in the region of Japan Sea and Northeast China could lower the seismic hazard of roughly E-W direction compressive events, while tend to increase the activity of NNE-SSW strike-slip events as well as the volcanism, especially in Honshu. The characteristics of the Focal Mechanism Solutions of the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake Sequence remind us that stress state as well as evolution of Japan Sea might depend to some extent on coupling state between Pacific Plate and North American Plate. Long-lasting weak coupling might lead to re-opening of Japan Sea Basin because it will not only guarantee a relatively extensional environment, but also provide necessary water to deep depth.

Abstract:The great Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) on 11 March 2011 was accompanied by nearly 100 large foreshocks and aftershocks (M≥6.0) in the Northeast Japan forearc. In this study we relocated 77 of these large events using three different velocity models. An updated three-dimensional velocity model significantly reduced the travel-time residuals in the earthquake relocation. We found that the large thrust earthquakes are generally located in or around high-velocity patches, suggesting that the generation of the large thrust earthquakes is controlled by structural heterogeneities in the megathrust zone. The high-velocity patches may represent asperities in the megathrust zone where the subducting Pacific plate and the overriding Okhotsk plate may be coupled strongly. Many non-thrust earthquakes occurred in the crust of the overriding Okhotsk plate, indicating that the stress field there has been changed by the Tohoku-oki mainshock. The present results may improve our understanding of the subduction dynamics and seismotectonics of the Northeast Japan arc.

Abstract:<p>Aftershocks of the 2012 Off-Coast of Sumatra Earthquake Sequence exhibit a complex and diffuse spatial distribution. The first-order complexity in aftershock distribution is clear and well beyond the influence of typical earthquake location uncertainty. The sequence included rupture of multiple fault segments, spatially separated. We use surface-wave based relative centroid locations to examine whether, at the small scale, the distribution of the aftershocks was influenced by location errors. Surface-wave based relative location has delineated precise oceanic transform fault earthquake locations in multiple regions. However, the relocated aftershocks off the coast of Sumatra seldom align along simple linear trends that are compatible with the corresponding fault strikes as estimated for the GCMT catalog. The relocation of roughly 60 moderate-earthquake epicentroids suggests that the faulting involved in the 2012 earthquake aftershock sequence included strain release along many short fault segments. Statistical analysis and temporal variations of aftershocks show a typical decay of the aftershocks but a relatively low number of aftershocks, as is common for intraplate oceanic earthquakes. Coulomb stress calculations indicate that most of the moderate-magnitude aftershocks are compatible with stress changes predicted by the large-event slip models. The patterns in the aftershocks suggest that the formation of the boundary and eventual localization of deformation between the Indian and Australian plate is a complicated process.</p>

Abstract:This paper deals with the Coulumb stress change according to the fault model composed of many small faults and layered geological crust model.Then we take Chi-Chi earthquake for example,to analyza the relation of the Coulumb stress change and the spatial distribution of the aftersocks.This paper discusses the relations the Coulumb stress change on the strike fault,dip fault and the distribution of strike earthquakes and dip earthquakes,respectively.The results demonstrate that the Coulumb stress change caused by the Chi-Chi earthquake is favorable to the occurrence of aftershockes in this region.

Abstract:SUMMARY We deployed a seismic network near the source region of the 2017 Mw 6.5 Jiuzhaigou earthquake to monitor aftershock activity and to investigate the local fault structure. An aftershock deployment of Array of small Arrays (AsA) and a Geometric Mean Envelop (GME) algorithm are adopted to enhance detection performance. We also adopt a set of association, relocation and matched-filter techniques to obtain a detailed regional catalogue. 16 742 events are detected and relocated, including 1279 aftershocks following the Mw 4.8 aftershock. We develop a joint inversion algorithm utilizing locations of event clusters and focal mechanisms to determine the geometry of planar faults. Six segments were finally determined, in which three segments are related to the Huya fault reflecting a change in fault dip direction near the main shock hypocentre, while the other segments reflect branches showing orthogonal and conjugate geometries with the Huya fault. Aftershocks were active on branching faults between the Huya and Minjiang faults indicating that the main shock may have ruptured both major faults. We also resolve a fault portion with ‘weak strength’ near the main shock hypocentre, which is characterized by limited coseismic slips, concentrated afterslip, low aftershock activities, high b-value and high sensitivity to stress changes. These phenomena can be explained by fault frictional properties at conditional stable sliding status, which may be related to the localized high pore-fluid pressure produced by the fluid intrusion.

Abstract:The great 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) and its 339 foreshocks and 5,609 aftershocks (9-27 March 2011) were relocated using a three-dimensional seismic velocity model and local P and S wave arrival times. The distribution of relocated hypocenters was compared with a tomographic image of the Northeast Japan forearc. The comparison indicates that the rupture nucleation of the largest events in the Tohoku-oki sequence, including the mainshock, was controlled by structural heterogeneities in the megathrust zone. Abstract:Currently, it is still challenging to detect earthquakes by using the measurements of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), especially while only adopting single-frequency GNSS. To increase the accuracy of earthquake detection and warning, extra information and techniques are required that lead to high costs. Therefore, this work tries to find a low-cost method with high-accuracy performance. The contributions of our research are twofold: (1) an improved earthquake-displacement estimation approach by considering the relation between earthquake and ionospheric disturbance is presented. For this purpose, we propose an undifferenced uncombined Single-Frequency Precise Point Positioning (SF-PPP) approach, in which both the ionospheric delay of each observed satellite and receiver Differential Code Bias (DCB) are parameterized. When processing the 1 Hz GPS data collected during the 2013 Mw7.0 Lushan earthquake and the 2011 Mw9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, the proposed SF-PPP method can provide coseismic deformation signals accurately. Compared to the results from GAMIT/TRACK, the accuracy of the proposed SF-PPP was not influenced by the common mode errors that exist in the GAMIT/TRACK solutions. (2) Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) anomalies before an earthquake are investigated by applying time-series analysis and spatial interpolation methods. Furthermore, on the long-term scale, it is revealed that significant positive/negative VTEC anomalies appeared around the earthquake epicenter on the day the earthquake occurred compared to about 4–5 days before the earthquake, whereas, on the short-term scale, positive/negative VTEC anomalies emerged several-hours before or after an earthquake.
Steady-state deformation and Coulomb failure stress change induced by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki M-W 9. 0 earthquake based on spherical dislocation theory

Abstract:Steady-state seismic deformation refers to the accumulation of viscoelastic relaxation effects caused by earthquakes on ultra-long time scales. Through the study of steady-state seismic deformation, the overall postseismic deformation field of the earth can be studied, which is beneficial to analyze the ultimate response of the surrounding area to the earthquake. In this paper, we first calculate the steady-state horizontal displacements produced by the 2011 TohokuOki M(W)9. 0 earthquake in Japan and eastern China using spherical earth dislocation theory. The results show that the steady-state horizontal displacements caused by the great earthquake on the main island of Japan will reach a maximum of 8 m, which is roughly twice the coseismic horizontal displacements. The steady-state horizontal displacements in Northeast China will exceed 0. 8 m, and in North China, the steady-state horizontal displacements will reach about 0. 5 m, which is 30-40 times the co-seismic horizontal displacements. Then, the geometric and sliding tectonic models of 15 major fault zones in Northeast and North China were established based on previous research results and geological data. And then the coseismic and steady-state Coulomb failure stress changes caused by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki M(W)9. 0 earthquake on the above-mentioned fault zones were calculated using the spherical earth dislocation theory. The results show that the coseismic Coulomb failure stress changes induced by the great earthquake on the main fault zones in Northeast and North China do not exceed 1 kPa. As a whole the steady-state Coulomb failure stress changes significantly exceed the coseismic results. The steady-state Coulomb failure stress changes on the faults do not exceed the seismic trigger threshold of 10 kPa, except for the northern part of the Yilan Yitong fault and the southern part of the Nenjiang fault. Therefore, the 2011 Tohoku-Oki M(W)9. 0 earthquake has little impact on the seismic hazard of Northeast and North China, and change slightly the stress state and seismicity of the main fault zones in the region.

Abstract:Abstract The near-trench coseismic rupture behaviour of the 2011 Tohoku–Oki earthquake remains poorly understood due to the scarcity of near-field observations. Differential bathymetry offers a unique approach to studying offshore coseismic seafloor deformation but has a limited horizontal resolution. Here we use differential bathymetry estimates with improved horizontal resolutions to investigate near-trench coseismic slip behaviours in the 2011 Tohoku–Oki earthquake. In the main rupture region, a velocity-strengthening behaviour in the shallow fault is observed. By contrast, the seafloor uplift decreases towards the trench, but the trend inverts near the backstop interface outcrop, revealing significant off-fault deformation features. Amongst various competing off-fault effects observed, we suggest that inelastic deformation plays a predominant role in near-trench tsunami excitation. Large trench-bleaching rupture is also observed immediately north of 39°, delimiting the northern extent of the main rupture region. Overall, striking spatial heterogeneity of the shallow rupture behaviour is revealed for the region.

Empirical Relationships Between Aftershock Zone Dimensions and Moment Magnitudes for Plate Boundary Earthquakes in Taiwan

Abstract:In this study, we establish the empirical relationships between the spatial dimensions of the aftershock zones and moment magnitudes (M-w) for the Taiwan region. The length (l) and width (w) of the aftershock zone of an earthquake is measured by the major and minor axes, respectively, of the ellipse of a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution of one-day aftershocks. Our data is composed of 649 main-shocks (depth <= 70 km, M-w 4.0-7.6) between 1990 and 2011. The relationships between aftershock zone dimensions and M-w were obtained by least-squares method with the corresponding uncertainties estimated by bootstrap. Our study confirms that aftershock zone dimensions are independent of faulting types and the seismic moment is proportional to l(3). The ratio (w/l) increases slightly with M-w and is independent of faulting types. Together with previous study, our results suggest that earthquakes of both small (M-w = 4.0) and large (M-w >= 7.0) magnitudes have similar focal zone geometrical parameters. By using the M-w-S relation, where the aftershock zone area S is estimated from l and w, we also provide an independent examination of the variations in the median stress drop. We find that the median stress drops of strike-slip earthquakes are higher than those of thrust events. Moreover, the median stress drops are independent of the moment magnitudes for normal and strike-slip events but decrease for large thrust events. These results are consistent with the latest global observations. Regardless of faulting types, the median stress drop decreases for larger (6 <= M-w <= 7.6) and relatively deep (depth similar to 60-70 km) earthquakes.
Seismology based Strong Ground Motion Attenuation relationship for Tohoku area in Japan Relationship for Tohoku Area in Japan

Abstract:A seismology based approach, to establish strong ground motion attenuation relationships for regions with few or without strong ground motion records, is developed. Tohoku area in Japan, with rich records, is selected as the target area to verify the feasibility. Data from small earthquakes, recorded by F-net seismographs, are adopted to calculate the Fourier spectra. The envelops of these spectra are taken as the objectives to inverse five regional source and crustal medium parameters by micro-genetic algorithm, including stress drop, the parameters of intrinsic attenuation and the parameters of the geometrical spreading function. These parameters are adopted to calculate a Fourier amplitude spectrum, and a complex spectrum is formed by combining a random phase spectrum and the amplitude spectrum. An acceleration time history can be simulated, and PGAs on different distances are obtained. The primary results are compared with K-NET records and some empirical attenuation relationships.

Abstract:The ultralow-frequency (ULF) electromagnetic anomaly has been considered one of the earthquake precursory signals with the potential for short-term prediction. As such, effectively detecting ULF anomalies is important for mitigating earthquake disasters. Given the comprehensive coverage of geomagnetic networks in Japan, the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake (M9.0) provided a tremendous opportunity for investigating the characteristics and mechanisms of ULF anomalies. Previous studies reporting detections of ULF anomalies triggered by the Tohoku-Oki earthquake have been questioned on the grounds of insufficient reliability due to technological limitations. In this study, we employ a multireference station data-quality-weighted method to detect the ULF anomaly. Comparison with traditional single-reference station method demonstrates the robustness of our detection results. A statistical test also indicates that the ULF anomaly appearing approximately two months before the earthquake was driven by physical processes. Geomagnetic storm analysis further rules solar activity as the cause of the anomaly. The spatial distribution of the anomaly amplitude reveals a decrease in the anomaly energy with increasing epicentral distance, implying a strong association between the anomaly and the earthquake. Our study is helpful for understanding the possible connection between the ULF electromagnetic precursors and the seismogenic processes of strong earthquakes, which contributes to achieving the ultimate goal of short-term earthquake prediction.

Abstract:In order to understand the influence of the March 11, 2011, MW 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake on regional-scale seismicity, we study the seismicity rate and focal mechanism solutions (FMSs) of earthquakes in northeast China (NEC) before and after the megathrust event. Broadband seismic waveforms from 270 permanent and temporary stations are used to invert for the moment tensors of 69 earthquakes between 2009 and 2013 in the NEC. Our results show that there are distinct changes in seismicity rate on major NEC faults before and after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki event although the seismic moment rate of the whole region remains roughly constant. In comparison to a wide distribution of earthquakes before the Tohoku-Oki event, FMSs of crustal earthquakes in the NEC after the megathrust event can be categorized into two groups: strike–slip events with E–W compression and normal-faulting events with N–S extension. Stress field inversions before and after the Tohoku-Oki event suggest that the variations in seismicity and FMSs are due to a minor adjustment of regional stress state imposed by the megathrust event, which is further confirmed by static Coulomb stress change calculations. Mantle-depth seismicity is also influenced by the megathrust event, possibly via a down-dip transfer of compressional stress along the subducting plate, as manifested by the absence of moderate-sized mantle-depth earthquakes (~MW 4–5) between May 2011 and April 2013 and the occurrence of deep-focus events with P axes along the dip direction of the subducting Pacific Plate in E–W vertical cross-sectional view and in WNW–ESE direction in map view.
Clustering of Offsets on the Haiyuan Fault and Their Relationship to Paleoearthquakes

Abstract:We used airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data to reevaluate the single-event offsets of the 1920 Haiyuan Ms 8.5 earthquake and the cumulative offsets along the western and middle segments of the coseismic surface rupture zone. Our LiDAR data indicate that the offset observations along both the western and middle segments fall into groups. The group with the minimum slip amount is associated with the 1920 Haiyuan Ms 8.5 earthquake, which ruptured both the western and middle segments. Our research highlights two new interpretations: First, the previously reported maximum displacement of the 1920 earthquake was likely due to at least two earthquakes; second, our results reveal that the cumulative offset probability density (COPD) peaks of the same offset amounts on the western and middle segments do not correspond to one another one-to-one. We suggest that any discussion of the rupture pattern of a certain fault based on the offset data should also consider fault segmentation and paleoseismological data. Therefore, the COPD peaks should be computed and analyzed on fault subsections and not entire fault zones to study the number of paleoearthquakes and their rupture patterns.

Abstract:On the 11th of March, 2011, a subduction earthquake of magnitude Mw9.0 happened at the northeast of Japan, generating a tsunami which resulted in huge damage in Japan. Okada’s elastic fault model is used to generate the deformation of the sea bottom based on USGS sources and UCSB sources respectively. The shallow water equations are solved by the adaptively refined finite volume methods so that it can compute the propagation of tsunami in the Pacific Ocean efficiently. The computed time series of the surface elevation are compared with the measured data from NOAA real-time tsunami monitoring systems for model validation, and UCSB sources derive better results than USGS sources. Furthermore, one nested domain with fine grid and higher topography resolution is combined to compute numerically this tsunami spreading in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and North of South China Sea. The impacts on China Coast and seas are analyzed and discussed. The results show that the tsunami has almost no impact in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. It has some kind impact on the East China Sea and South China Sea. However, maximum wave height on China Coast is smaller than 0.5 m. It is thus concluded that the 2011 Tohoku tsunami did not generate a significant influence on China Coast.
The Relation of Kappa and Distance in the Case of Tohoku-oki Earthquake

Abstract:In seismology, kappa (kappa) values have been used as an important input parameter for 30 years. However, the mechanism is not clear till now. The relation with distance is discussed as the influence of propagation path on kappa values, the influence of magnitude and focal mechanism is not our focus. Data is from the main shock of 2011 Tohoku-oki Earthquake, recorded by K-NET and KiK-net stations with distance less than 300 km. The linear dependence with distance is more visible from the KiK-net borehole records than that from the K-NET and KiK-net surface records.

Abstract:Following the 11 March 2011 Japan MW9.0 earthquake, frequent moderate and small events occurred on the Yishu fault zone and its either side. Using continuous GPS data and a sliding block model,this work studies the relationship between the energy release of these shocks and the block relative motion of either side of the Yishu fault zone. The results show that(1)the equivalent magnitude M from released energy and the two blocks' relative motion are well correlated when earthquakes are selected in a retrieval circle(whose center is the midpoint of the Yishu fault zone) with a radius of 250~500km and using a sliding time window of 3~10 months. The best correlation coefficient between M and the two blocks' relative motion is 0.74 and the T test shows a significant linear correlation between them.(2)Spatial distribution of the correlation coefficients shows that the relative motion of the blocks on both sides affects the energy release in the area from the north part of Yishu fault zone to the Jiaodong Peninsula area and southwest Shandong-Henan border area obviously. (3)Since June 2014, the relative motion of the two blocks on both sides of the Yishu fault zone presents a wave of change,which may be an expression of the accumulation of seismic strain energy in the Yishu fault zone and its two sides. The linear relationship between the equivalent magnitude M from released energy and two blocks'relative motion V can be fitted by linear equation M=0.51 * V+3.9, showing that strain energy accumulation could be released by the moderate and small earthquakes in a timely manner, which may favorable to delay the seismic risk in the study area. It also shows,on the other hand, that earthquake energy was not released so completely in the study area since the end of 2015 to 2016,which is likely associated with the Changdao earthquake swarm in 2017.
