Abstract:Land use change (LUC) is the most dynamic force in terrestrial carbon stock change, and it is imperative to account for the dynamics of LUC in carbon stock change when forming land use policies. This paper explored the impacts of LUCs on carbon (C) stocks at a county scale and detected changes of soil C stocks within a county-scale land use planning policy. The LUCs within 1979–2006 in Fuyang County (eastern China) and Fuyang Land Use Master Planning (FLUMP) (2006–2020) were selected for this pilot study. The estimates of C stock changes were examined by compiling vegetation and soil organic C density data from six land use types, and through literature reviews and field surveys. The results showed that LUCs between 1979 and 2006 already caused a vegetation carbon (VC) decrease of 273.44 Gg and a soil organic carbon (SOC) decrease of 771.01 Gg, mainly due to urbanization processes. Further, the FLUMP (2006–2020) is expected to lead to a potential C loss of 25.93 × 10−3 Mg C ha−1year−1 for vegetation and 27.48 × 10−3 Mg C ha−1year−1 for soil between 2006 and 2020. As the situation stands, it is urgent to devise rational policies and effective measures to reverse the C loss process.

Abstract:Soil is recognized as the largest carbon reservoir in the terrestrial ecosystem. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is vulnerable to changes in land use and climate. For a better understanding of the SOC dynamics and its driving factors, we collected data of the 1980s and 2000s in the North and Northeast China and conducted the digital soil mapping for spatial variation of SOC for the respective period. In the 1980s, 585 soils were sampled and the area was resampled in 2003 and 2004 (1062 samples) in a 30-km grid. The main land use in the area was cropland, forest and grassland. The random forest was used to predict the SOC concentration and its temporal change using land use, terrain factors, vegetation index, vis-NIR spectra and climate factors as predictors. The average SOC concentration in 1985 was 10.0 g kg(-1) compared to 12.5 g kg(-1) in 2004. The SOC variation was similar over the two periods, and levels increased from south to north. The estimated SOC stock was 1.68 Pg in 1985 and 1.66 Pg in 2004, but the SOC changes were different under different land uses. Over the twenty-year period, average temperatures increased and large areas of forests and grassland were converted to cropland. SOC under cropland was increased by 0.094 Pg (+9%) whereas 0.089 Pg SOC was lost under forests (-25%) and 0.037 Pg in the soils under grassland (-25%). It is concluded that land use is the main drivers for SOC changes in this area while climate change had different contributions in different regions. SOC loss was remarkable under the land use conversion while cropland has considerable potential to sequester SOC. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is critical for monitoring agricultural sustainability and mitigating global climate change. A study was done to investigate the SOC changes between 2003 and 2016 by DeNitrification-DeComposition (DNDC) model in an intensively cultivated region of eastern China, using a detailed high-resolution soil database, which contained 4875 sites (0-20 cm depth) with the sampling density of one sample per km(2) in 2003. Results showed the DNDC model had good performance for simulating the SOC dynamics in the study area. Spatial analysis showed that 71% of the study area gained C, whilst 29% maintained their C balance with no C loss in all areas. Results suggested that the current management practice facilitated soil C sequestration in this region although soil type also played an important role. SOC density (SOCD) in lime concretion black soil was significantly higher than those in other soils. The averaged global warming potential ranged from 3865.8 to 7110.8 kg CO2 equivalent ha(-1) yr(-1) from 2003 to 2016 with CH4 contributing the largest proportion, which might be associated with the high input of fertilizer. Spatially high-resolution estimates of SOC using DNDC can support dual agricultural and carbon management in this region.
The Effects of Land Use Change on Soil Organic Carbon Stock in China: A Meta-Analysis with the Empirical Modeling Approach

Abstract:China has experienced a pronounced frequency of land use changes (LUC) over recent decades, resulting in notable alterations to soil organic carbon (SOC) stock. Given that the soil carbon (C) pool constitutes the largest C reservoir in the Earth's system, unraveling the spatiotemporal evolution mechanism of SOC stock influenced by LUC becomes imperative. This understanding holds significant importance for addressing global climate change and ensuring the sustainable management of soil resources. Despite hundreds of field studies and no less than a dozen literature reviews conducted, a substantial divergence persists regarding the direction and magnitude of changes in SOC stock associated with LUC. Drawing upon a synthesis of 194 publications encompassing 658 sites across China, this study endeavors to investigate the impact of LUC on the dynamics of SOC stock in topsoil (0-20 cm). The results of the meta-analysis revealed that, on average, LUC led to an increase of SOC stock by 3.50 t ha(-1). Notably, significant increments in SOC stock were observed following conversions from cropland to forest (17.74 t ha(-1)), cropland to grassland (7.64 t ha(-1)), cropland to plantation (9.27 t ha(-1)), grassland to forest (10.24 t ha(-1)), and plantation to forest (13.30 t ha(-1)). Conversely, a substantial decline in SOC stock was noted after transitions from forest to cropland (-33.57 t ha(-1)), forest to grassland (-48.61 t ha(-1)), forest to plantation (-14.76 t ha(-1)), and grassland to cropland (-11.13 t ha(-1)). Furthermore, we investigated the temporal dynamics and revealed the principal driving factors influencing SOC stock changes under LUC in China. Sand content and initial SOC stock exhibited a negative correlation with SOC stock changes, while silt content, mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature showed positive correlations. Additionally, the multiple linear regression models demonstrated robust predictive capabilities for SOC stock dynamics under LUC with the number of sites >30 (R-2 of 0.31-0.82). The findings of this study offer valuable insights, serving as a pertinent reference for informed decision making in the enhancement of land use management to augment SOC stock in China.
Variations of Soil Organic Carbon Following Land Use Change on Deep‐Loess Hillsopes in China

Abstract:Land use change is a key factor driving changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) around the world. However, the changes in SOC following land use changes have not been fully elucidated, especially for deep soils (>100 cm). Thus, we investigated the variations of SOC under different land uses (cropland, jujube orchard, 7‐year‐old grassland and 30‐year‐old grassland) on hillslopes in the Yuanzegou watershed of the Loess Plateau in China based on soil datasets related to soils within the 0–100 cm. Furthermore, we quantified the contribution of deep‐layer SOC (200–1,800 cm) to that of whole soil profiles based on soil datasets within the 0–1,800 cm. The results showed that in shallow profiles (0–100 cm), land uses significantly (p < 0·05) influenced the distribution of SOC contents and stocks in surface layer (0–20 cm) but not subsurface layers (20–100 cm). Pearson correlation analysis indicated that soil texture fractions and total N were significantly (p < 0·05 or 0·01) correlated with SOC content, which may have masked effects of land use change on SOC. In deep profiles (0–1,800 cm), SOC stock generally decreased with soil depth. But deep soils showed high SOC sequestration capacity. The SOC accumulated in the 100–1,800 m equalled 90·6%, 91·6%, 87·5% and 88·6% of amounts in the top 100 cm under cropland, 7‐year‐old grassland, 30‐year‐old grassland and jujube orchard, respectively. The results provide insights into SOC dynamics following land use changes and stressed the importance of deep‐layer SOC in estimating SOC inventory in deep loess soils. Abstract:It remains unclear what changes have occurred in the distribution pattern of and trend in soil organic carbon (SOC) in China against the background of climate and land use change. Clarifying the dynamic changes in SOC and their driving factors in different regions of China is therefore crucial for assessing the global carbon cycle. In this study, we collected and supplemented a large amount of soil organic carbon density (SOCD) data in China from 2001 to 2020 and extracted data on environmental covariates (ECs) for the corresponding years. A random forest model was used to estimate the SOCD at a depth of 0–20 cm and 0–100 cm in China for the years 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020, and we explored the trend of SOCD changes and their key driving factors. The results showed the following: (1) Compared with previous studies, the predictive ability of the 0–100 cm depth model was greatly improved; the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.61 and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) was =0.76. (2) From 2001 to 2020, China's soil organic carbon stocks (SOCS) were 38.11, 39.11, 39.88, 40.16, and 41.12 Pg C for the 0–20 cm depth and 110.49, 112.67, 112.80, 113.06, and 114.96 Pg C for the 0–100 cm depth, respectively. (3) The effects of temperature and precipitation on SOCD in China showed obvious regional variability, and land use changes had mainly positive effects on SOCD in all regions of China, which was related to the large-scale implementation of ecological protection and restoration and the policy of returning farmland to forests and grasslands in China. This study provides strong scientific support for addressing climate change and rationalizing the use of land resources.

Abstract:Land use change is a main driving factor to the change of soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, in order to make a further study about the effects of land use change on SOC, based on the soil sampling data, soil type map and land use map of Jiangsu, this paper analyzed the spatial changes of the surface SOC density from 1985 to 2005 in Jiangsu and the effects of land use change on surface SOC density and SOC storage, the main conclusions are as follows: 1) The spatial changing trend of the surface SOC storage from 1985 to 2005: The changing trend in Huanghuai plain district differed too much from north to south, the Northern Yimusi plain mainly increased, while the lower reaches of Huaihe plain decreased mostly in the South; The changes in coastal beaches and ocean districts were not obvious; There presented greatly differences in Yangtze river delta plain district about SOC changes: districts covered with plain and hill along Yangtze river mainly increased, but in the Maoshanyisu hills and Taihu lake districts it both decreased. 2) The surface SOC density of different land uses all increased from 1985 to 2005, land use changes such as from cropland to woodland and grassland; grassland to woodland and construction land; construction land to cropland, woodland, grassland; wetland, construction land to other land uses can increase SOC storage, while other type of land use changes may lead to carbon emission.
Spatial-Temporal Variability of Soil Organic Carbon Density and Its Related Factors in Fengqiu County of Yellow River Basin, China: A Model and GIS Technique Approach

Abstract:The accurate estimation of the soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration rate is very important for studying farmland soil fertility and environmental effects. In this research, a typical fluvor-aquic soil area, Fengqiu county, located in the Yellow River basin of the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain of China, was chosen as a study area. The physicochemical properties of 70 soil samples collected from the surface layer (at a depth of 0–20 cm) in 2011 were analyzed, and related data about the sampling sites were also collected from the Second State Soil Survey of China (SSSSC), conducted in 1981. The results revealed that the SOC density (SOCD) in Fengqiu county increased greatly on a spatio-temporal scale. The average SOCD increased from 15.66 to 26.09 Mg ha−1, and the SOCD sequestration rate was more than 0.20 Mg C ha−1 year−1 in most regions. Few areas showed lost carbon in the past 30 years (1981–2011). In addition, the study suggested that all the areas present strong carbon sequestration potential in the coming decades from 2011, and the carbon sequestration potential was mainly between 32–40 Mg ha−1. Finally, the SOCD sequestration rate was not only affected by natural factors, such as soil type and pH, but also positively correlated with artificial soil management measures, such as fertilization and straw returning. Therefore, we concluded that the farmland in Fengqiu county showed significant carbon sequestration characteristics in the past 30 years (1981–2011). Considering that soil has a great potential for carbon sequestration in the future, the trend of carbon sequestration in farmland soil might continue for a period of time. Furthermore, the results of this study emphasized that strengthening soil scientific management may play a positive role in improving soil carbon sequestration.

Abstract:<p>The properties of soil organic carbon (SOC) required for carbon sequestration and nutrient availability are contradictory, and the changes in SOC caused by agricultural land use changes remain elusive. Data on the total soil organic carbon (TOC) and labile organic carbon (LOC), including easily oxidizable organic carbon (EOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC), of the soil profile were analysed for four typical agricultural land use scenarios in the Chengdu Plain, China. The impacts of agricultural land use changes on sequestration and nutrient availability of SOC were assessed in this urban agricultural area using the space‐for‐time substitution method. Conversion of land use from a traditional agricultural rotation to afforestation increased the MBC content and decreased the contents of EOC, DOC and TOC due to the lower input of organic matter, improved aeration of the soil profile and growth of aboveground biomass. Conversion of a traditional rotation to a rice–garlic rotation resulted in a significant increase in topsoil TOC, slight but insignificant decreases in subsoil TOC, and clear increases in LOC because of rice planting, rice straw mulch and reasonable application of chemical fertilizers. In contrast, the conversion of a traditional rotation to a rice‐leafy vegetable rotation decreased MBC due to the excessive use of chemical fertilizers that consequently increased EOC, DOC and TOC. We conclude that afforestation on paddy soil has negative consequences for soil carbon sequestration, and a rice‐leafy vegetable rotation contributes to carbon sequestration but is detrimental to soil fertility. In addition, the MBC ratio in soil could be the optimal indicator for assessing SOC stability and soil fertility, and more attention should be paid to subsoil carbon changes.</p>

Effects of farmland landscape pattern on spatial distribution of soil organic carbon in Lower Liaohe Plain of northeastern China

Abstract:Knowledge of the factors affecting spatial distribution of farmland soil organic carbon (SOC) contribute to a better understanding of the impact of human activities on soil, which is important for improving soil quality and mitigating climate change. Intensive production has brought about significant changes in farmland landscape pattern. However, the consequences of this change on SOC remains unclear. In this study, using 307 sampling sites of SOC in Lower Liaohe Plain, we mapped the spatial distribution of SOC by Kriging method, and investigated the relationship between topographic and climate factors and SOC, then nine landscape indexes were used as the indicator of human activity and intensity to describe the farmland landscape pattern and analyzed the relationship between landscape pattern and SOC. We observed that SOC was positively related to mean annual precipitation (MAP), negatively related to mean annual temperature (MAT). Flat terrain weakened the relationship between topographic factors and SOC. SOC was positively related to the indexes that represent the complexity of patch shape, and negatively related to indexes that represent the contagion and connectivity degree of patches, indicated that farmland landscape with high connectivity, regular shape and high contagion were not conducive to carbon sequestration. Also, stepwise regression analysis showed that MAP, MAT and DEM contributed the most to SOC variation, these factors could explain 29.3% of the variation in SOC. While added Aggregation Index (AI) could improve the explanation degree by 3.1%, and AI became the strongest factor after natural factors. This study highlights the role of landscape pattern in influencing farmland SOC. The results are useful supplement to the study of farmland SOC and may provide support for SOC sequestration through regulating and controlling landscape pattern.

Abstract:The distribution characteristics of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil nutrients under different land-use types in Linyi City, East China, were studied. The spatial distribution of SOC under different land-use types and the relationship between SOC and soil nutrients were analyzed using remote sensing interpretation and soil sample analyses. The results showed that SOC in Linyi was mainly stored in drylands and paddy fields. SOC and total nitrogen (TN) levels were positively correlated for most land use types. There was a positive linear correlation between SOC and total K in the paddy fields. The coefficients of variation for SOC and TN differed greatly among the land use types studied. Total SOC storage was 8772.73 × 103 kg in the surface 0.2 m soil layer. The order of total SOC storage was drylands (6771.45 × 103 ton) > paddy field (764.67 × 103 ton) > nurseries (510.79 × 103 ton) > forest land (413.49 × 103 ton) > low-cover grasslands (238 × 103 ton) > bare land (74.35 × 103 ton). With the largest SOC storage, and C density, respectively, drylands and paddy fields are conducive to enhancing soil C sequestration, achieving low-carbon goals, and mitigating climate change.

Abstract:In order to explore the spatiotemporal changes and driving factors of soil organic carbon (SOC) in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China, we took Aohan banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the study area, used the random forest (RF) method to predict the SOC from 1989 to 2018, and the geographic detector method (GDM) was applied to analyze quantitatively the natural and anthropogenic factors that are affecting Aohan banner. The results indicated that: (1) After adding the terrain factors, the R2 and residual predictive deviation (RPD) of the RF model increased by 1.178 and 0.39%, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 1.42 g/kg and 1.05 g/kg, respectively; (2) The spatial distribution of SOC was higher in the south and lower in the north; the negative growth of SOC accounted for 55.923% of the total area, showing a trend of degradation; (3) Precipitation was the main driving factor of SOC spatial variation in the typical agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China, which was also affected by temperature, elevation, soil type and soil texture (p < 0.01). (4). Anthropogenic factors (carbon input and gross domestic product (GDP)) had a greater impact on SOC than did climate factors (temperature and precipitation), making anthropogenic factors the dominant factors affecting SOC temporal variation (p < 0.01). The results of this work constitute a basis for a regional assessment of the temporal evolution of organic carbon in the soil surface, which is a key tool for monitoring the sustainable development of agropastoral ecotones.

Abstract:Urban soil organic carbon (SOC) plays an important role in urban ecosystem services. Rapid urbanization and anthropogenic disturbances have created complex and dynamic land-use patterns and heterogeneous urban landscapes, however, the impact of these patterns on the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon density (D SOC ) remains unclear. This study investigated SOC using a spatial sampling method from 213 sites in Xi'an City Ring Expressway, China. The results showed that the D SOC ranged from 1.79 to 4.93 kg m −2 , with a mean of 3.31 kg m −2 , and the value of Dsoc was decreased from city center toward suburb with a significant spatial heterogeneity. The D SOC varied with land-use types, being higher in parks, transportation, commercial, and public lands than in industrial, agricultural, parking, and construction lands. The Dsoc was positively related to population density, normalized difference impervious surface index, road density, and landscape shape index, while negatively to aggregation index and patch richness density. Overall, the urbanization of Xi'an City has strongly affected the soil C stocks, and the capacity of urban soils to store C was sustainable. These findings lays a scientific foundation for future soil carbon management in urban development.

Abstract:Due to the impacts of unwise industrial agriculture, extreme precipitation events are increasing in frequency and are accelerating the process of global warming in the karst area. The dynamic change in soil organic carbon (SOC) and its driving factors in cultivated land in the last 35 years were studied by using data from the second national soil survey of China and measurements made in 2015. The results indicated that the SOC per unit area of cultivated land increased by 32.45 × 103 t in the last 35 years in the study area, exhibiting basically the same levels and a slight increasing trend, and the annual average change rate was 0.02 kg C·hm−2·a−1. In terms of spatial distribution, carbon loss areas were mainly concentrated in the middle northern region, western region, and scattered eastern regions of the county. The main factors affecting the change in SOC in the cultivated land in the study area in the last 35 years include nitrogen fertilizer application, stubble, soil thickness, soil total nitrogen, C/N, rock coverage, gravel content, soil organic carbon density (SOCD1980), etc. This study will provide a database for the management of SOC in cultivated land in the future.

Economics- and policy-driven organic carbon input enhancement dominates soil organic carbon accumulation in Chinese croplands

Abstract:China's croplands have experienced drastic changes in management practices, such as fertilization, tillage, and residue treatments, since the 1980s. There is an ongoing debate about the impact of these changes on soil organic carbon (SOC) and its implications. Here we report results from an extensive study that provided direct evidence of cropland SOC sequestration in China. Based on the soil sampling locations recorded by the Second National Soil Survey of China in 1980, we collected 4,060 soil samples in 2011 from 58 counties that represent the typical cropping systems across China. Our results showed that across the country, the average SOC stock in the topsoil (0-20 cm) increased from 28.6 Mg C ha-1 in 1980 to 32.9 Mg C ha-1 in 2011, representing a net increase of 140 kg C ha-1 year-1 However, the SOC change differed among the major agricultural regions: SOC increased in all major agronomic regions except in Northeast China. The SOC sequestration was largely attributed to increased organic inputs driven by economics and policy: while higher root biomass resulting from enhanced crop productivity by chemical fertilizers predominated before 2000, higher residue inputs following the large-scale implementation of crop straw/stover return policy took over thereafter. The SOC change was negatively related to N inputs in East China, suggesting that the excessive N inputs, plus the shallowness of plow layers, may constrain the future C sequestration in Chinese croplands. Our results indicate that cropland SOC sequestration can be achieved through effectively manipulating economic and policy incentives to farmers.

Abstract:Soil, as the largest organic carbon pool of terrestrial ecosystem, plays a significant role in regulating the global carbon cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, and global climate change. It is of great significance to scientifically understand the change rule and influence mechanism of soil organic carbon (SOC) to further understand the "source–sink" transformation of SOC and its influence on climate change. In this paper, the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and influencing mechanism of SOC were analyzed by means of field investigation and laboratory analysis and the measured data in the Eastern Qilian Mountains. The results showed that the average SOC content of 0–50 cm was 35.74 ± 4.15 g/kg and the range of coefficients of variation (CV) between 48.84% and 75.84%, which suggested that the SOC content exhibited moderate heterogeneity at each soil layer of the Eastern Qilian Mountains. In four land cover types, the SOC content of forestland was the highest, followed by alpine meadow, grassland, and wilderness, which presented surface enrichment, and there was a decreasing trend with the soil depth. From the perspective of seasonal dynamics, there was a uniform pattern of SOC content in different land cover types, shown to be the highest in winter, followed by autumn, spring, and summer, and with the biggest difference between winter and summer appearing in the surface layer. At the same time, our study suggested that the SOC content of different land cover types was closely related to aboveground biomass and negatively related to both the mean monthly temperature and the mean monthly precipitation. Therefore, the distribution and variation of SOC was the result of a combination of climate, vegetation, and other factors.

Abstract:A total of 292 soil samples were taken from surface soil (0–20 cm) of a typical small watershed–Tongshuang in the black soil region of Heilongjiang province, northeast China in June 2005 for examining the concentration of soil organic carbon (SOC). Spatial variability of SOC in relation to topography and land use was evaluated using classical statistics, geostatistics and geographic information system (GIS) analyses. The objective of this study was to provide a scientific basis for land management targeting at improving soil quality in this region. Classical statistical analysis results indicated that the variability of SOC was moderate (CV = 0.30). Slope position and land use types were discriminating factors for its spatial variability. Geostatistics analyses showed that SOC had a strong spatial autocorrelation, which was mainly induced by structural factors. Mean concentration of SOC in surface soil was 2.27% in this watershed, which was a very low level in the northern black soil region of northeast China. In this small watershed, present soil and water conservation measures played an important role in controlling soil loss. But SOC's restoration was unsatisfactory. Nearly three-quarters of the area had worrisome productivity. How to improve SOC concentration targeting at soil fertility is a pressing need in the future.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) constitutes a critical component of carbon reservoirs within terrestrial ecosystems. The ramifications of urban land use transitions on SOC dynamics, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions such as Shanghai, remain insufficiently elucidated. This investigation synergizes a predictive land use change model (Logistic-CA-Markov) with an ecosystem service quantification framework (InVEST), aiming to delineate the interplay between SOC variability and Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC) under natural development and ecological protection scenarios. Empirical observations from 2010 to 2020 reveal a contraction in Shanghai's agricultural land of 34,912.76 hectares, juxtaposed with an expansion of urban built-up areas of 36,048.24 hectares. Projections for 2030 under an ecological protection scenario indicate a moderated urban sprawl, reducing built-up area expansion by 13,518 hectares relative to the natural development scenario. Notably, the net carbon sequestration capacity of Shanghai is anticipated to diminish by approximately 0.418 million tons between 2020 and 2030. This trend is observed under both considered scenarios, forecasting a cumulative reduction in SOC stocks exceeding 1 million tons by 2030. The natural development pathway portends a more pronounced and accelerated depletion of SOC reserves. Although ecological conservation measures show the potential to decelerate this loss, they appear insufficient to reverse the ongoing decline in SOC stocks. This study advocates for strategic urban planning interventions focused on constraining the growth of building densities and augmenting the preservation and management of eco-lands. Such measures are imperative for bolstering Shanghai's carbon sequestration capacity.

Abstract:Soil microorganisms and enzymes play crucial roles in soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration by promoting soil aggregate formation and stability and by participating in SOC cycling and accumulation. However, the effects by which soil microorganisms and enzymes act as mediators driving dynamic changes in SOC during rapid urbanization remain unclear. Therefore, this study selected the built-up area of Nanchang City, China (505 km 2 ), as the study area. Sampling surveys were conducted using 184 sample plots stratified based on the proportion of impermeable surface area to distinguish different urbanization levels. The driving factors of dynamic changes in SOC of different aggregates during the process of urbanization were analyzed using the soil microbial community and enzyme activities. The results demonstrated that with an increase in urbanization intensity, both SOC content and stock exhibited a significant decline ( p < 0.05). The highest SOC stock and contribution rate were observed in the 0.25–1 mm aggregates, and they were significantly influenced by urbanization ( p < 0.05). In addition, the biomass of gram-positive bacteria (G+) and actinomycetota, and the activities of N-acetylglucosaminidase and acid phosphatase (AP) were significantly higher in low-urbanization areas than in high-urbanization areas ( p < 0.05). SOC of each aggregate was positively correlated with fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, G+, gram-negative bacteria, actinomycetota, protozoa, β-1,4-glucosidase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, AP, urease, and catalase. Compared to soil enzymes, soil microorganisms exhibited a greater role in SOC sequestration (22.7%). Additionally, a structural equation model indicated that urbanization can directly or indirectly lead to a decrease in SOC of aggregates by altering soil physicochemical properties and affecting microbial and enzyme dynamics. However, the larger vegetation characteristics index mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization on SOC. Overall, urbanization had a negative impact on soil carbon storage. In the future, it is important to consider strategies that focus on improving soil nutrients, maintaining soil structure, protecting existing urban trees, and enhancing plant diversity during the urbanization process. These measures can help increase soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity, thereby improving soil and aggregate-related SOC content. The study could contribute to enhancing carbon sequestration in urban greenspaces.

Abstract:Investigating the relationship of soil aggregate stability with the organic carbon in the aggregate and its response to land use change is conducive to the estimation of soil carbon sink potential, improvement of rocky desertification, and rational land use in karst areas of Southwest China. In order to explore the effects of land use change on the composition and stability of soil aggregate stability as well as the content of aggregate organic carbon, the soil (0-30 cm) of five land use types (secondary forest, pomelo forest, paddy field, pepper forest, and dry land) was selected as the research object. The characteristics and correlation of soil aggregate components and organic carbon under different land use patterns were obtained, and the contribution of soil aggregates to the change in organic carbon after land use change was calculated. The results showed that the macroaggregates in the surface soil (0-15 cm) of the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were 63.32%, 52.38%, and 47.77%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of dry land (23.70%), as was also seen in the lower layer (15-30 cm). The geometric mean diameter (GMD) and mean weight diameter (MWD) of soil aggregates in the secondary forest, pomelo forest, and paddy field were significantly higher than those in dry land. In the surface soil, the organic carbon of the secondary forest and paddy field was significantly higher than that of other land use patterns. By contrast, in the lower soil layer, only the organic carbon of the paddy field was significantly higher than that of the others. Under different land use patterns, the organic carbon content of aggregates followed the same order of macroaggregates > microaggregates > silt and clay, indicating that macroaggregates allowed soil organic carbon to accumulate, whereas silt and clay did the opposite. According to correlation analysis, the content of soil macroaggregates was significantly positively correlated with GMD, MWD, and soil aggregate organic carbon, suggesting that the increase in soil macroaggregates could improve the stability of soil aggregates and store more soil organic carbon. Further, as land use change may have significantly affected the soil aggregate, moderate development of forestry and paddy cultivation is suggested to improve the soil carbon sequestration potential in the karst area of Southwest China.
