Abstract:The status of Pannotia as an Ediacaran supercontinent, or even its mere existence as a coherent large landmass, is controversial. The effect of its hypothesized amalgamation is generally ignored in mantle convection models claiming the transition from Rodinia to Pangaea represents a single supercontinent cycle. We apply three geodynamic scenarios to Pannotia amalgamation that are tested using regional geology. Scenarios involving quasi-stationary mantle convection patterns are not supported by the geological record. A scenario involving feedback between the supercontinent cycle and global mantle convection patterns predicts upwellings beneath the Gondwanan portion of Pannotia and the arrival of plumes along the entire Gondwanan (but not Laurentian) margin beginning at c. 0.6 Ga. Such a scenario is compatible with regional geology, but the candidates for plume magmatism we propose require testing by detailed geochemical and isotopic studies. If verified, this scenario could provide geodynamic explanations for the origins of the late Neoproterozoic and Early Paleozoic Iapetus and Rheic oceans and the terranes that were repeatedly detached from their margins.

The Ordovician Exposed: Contributions from the 12th International Symposium on the Ordovician System

Abstract:For nearly two centuries some of the world's most notable geologists and paleontologists have intensively studied the Ordovician rocks of North America. The "layer cake" sedimentary strata deposited in the vast epicontinental seas of the interior and the flanking folded and thrusted mountain belts provided both complex problems and fertile ground for new theories and methods. The problem of correlating between regions in the large cratonic interior and between disparate biofacies gave rise to exciting new studies in sequence, event, quantitative, and chemostratigraphy. Distinctive and traceable marker beds, geochemically fingerprinted K-bentonites, and carbon isotope excursions allow for correlation with unprecedented precision, which leads to new questions (and answers) about Ordovician climate and oceanography, global carbon cycling, and the timing of tectonic events. Recent innovations in using geochemistry to study the ancient environment has greatly increased our understanding of Ordovician climate cyclicity and its effects on Earth's biota. Advances in geochronology have given the geologic community amazingly precise dates on Ordovician K-bentonites, increasing the precision and usefulness of our most fundamental tool the geologic time scale. In short, it is an exciting time in Ordovician research and the highlights of this work were presented at the 12th International Symposium on the Ordovician System. The conference included fifty-nine talks and 18 posters presentations given by over 80 delegates representing 14 different countries. Its overall theme was Integrated Stratigraphy, and as noted above comprises the latest research in sedimentary geochemistry, geochronology, sequence stratigraphy, event stratigraphy, and quantitative stratigraphic methods. These studies provide the stratigraphic framework and paleoenvironmental context for examining the evolution, diversification, and extinction of Ordovician life. ISOS 2015 also offered 4 field trips - 3 to the southern, central, and northern Appalachian Mountains, and one to eastern and central Oklahoma - to examine classic exposures of Ordovician rocks and the only Ordovician GSSP in the United States. This theme issue includes nine contributed papers that are an expansion on the presentations of 12th International Symposium on the Ordovician System. We would like to thank the presenters, field trip leaders, and manuscript reviewers, all of whom are essential to a successful symposium.

Abstract:ICHNIA 2024—The 5th International Congress on Ichnology was held at the Canto da Ilha Hotel and Convention Center from 14 to 19 April, 2024, attracting 105 ichnologists from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America (). The scientific program consisted of three short courses, two workshops, five keynote talks, four days of technical sessions, and three field trips. Science communication activities were also part of the general program, consisting of a keynote talk, a trace fossil exhibition featuring selected samples from Brazilian collections, and a paleoart show. Social activities such as the icebreaker reception, the Brazilian Night, the Conference Dinner, and the ICHNIA football game gave opportunities for entertainment, fun, and integration.

Abstract:At a team residency sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, 10-14 April 2000 an organizational plan was conceived to create a global network of collaborating health workers and earth scientists dedicated to the development of computer-based models that can be used for improved control programs for schistosomiasis and other snail-borne diseases of medical and veterinary importance. The models will be assembled using GIS methods, global climate model data, sensor data from earth observing satellites, disease prevalence data, the distribution and abundance of snail hosts, and digital maps of key environmental factors that affect development and propagation of snail-borne disease agents. A work plan was developed for research collaboration and data sharing, recruitment of new contributing researchers, and means of access of other medical scientists and national control program managers to GIS models that may be used for more effective control of snail-borne disease. Agreement was reached on the use of compatible GIS formats, software, methods and data resources, including the definition of a 'minimum medical database' to enable seamless incorporation of results from each regional GIS project into a global model. The collaboration plan calls for linking a 'central resource group' at the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, Louisiana State University and the Danish Bilharziasis Laboratory with regional GIS networks to be initiated in Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, Latin America and Southern Asia. An Internet site, www.gnosisGIS.org, (GIS Network On Snail-borne Infections with special reference to Schistosomiasis), has been initiated to allow interaction of team members as a 'virtual research group'. When completed, the site will point users to a toolbox of common resources resident on computers at member organizations, provide assistance on routine use of GIS health maps in selected national disease control programs and provide a forum for development of GIS models to predict the health impacts of water development projects and climate variation.
Role of Pan-African Events in the Circum-East Antarctic Orogen of East Gondwana: a Critical Overview

Abstract:Abstract Recent studies of Pan-African events in East Gondwana are critically reviewed, particularly recent models of amalgamation of East Gondwana during the Pan-African period. It is pointed out that critical data are insufficient to constrain the newly proposed models and so the classical model of the Grenvillian Circum-East Antarctic Orogen cannot yet be replaced. Grenvillian tectonothermal events with a peak between 1.0 and 1.2Ga assembled different crustal blocks of the East Antarctic Shield with different geohistories. Pan-African tectonothermal reworking took place over wide but selected areas of the orogen. Careful geochronological studies, including SHRIMP dating associated with structural and petrological investigations to correlate ages with those events, are shown to be important, since fluid-rich and/or deformational conditions are equally effective as temperature conditions for mineral recrystallization and resetting of isotopic systematics. Pan-African suture zones, one extending from the Mozambique Belt to the Shackleton Range and another connecting the Mozambique Belt to the Zambezi Belt, are equally possible, although the width of the southern Mozambique Ocean is poorly understood. The extent of Pan-African sutures in the Prydz Bay area is enigmatic, although they represent definite orogens. Palaeomagnetic studies may provide critical constraints in evaluating the sutures, provided that the age of magnetization is well established.

Abstract:International Conferences on Serpentine Ecology create a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences and to promote scientific dialogue among scientists from numerous fields who share expertise in the study of ultramafic habitats worldwide. Here, highlights of the contributions to the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology are presented. The 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology was held in Nancy, France on June 12–16, 2023. The main goals of the conference were to create a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences and to promote scientific dialogue among scientists from numerous fields who share expertise in the study of ultramafic habitats worldwide. The proceedings of the conference are being published as two Special Issues of Ecological Research, of which this is the second. In this article, we present the major topics and provide some highlights of the contributions to the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology.

Abstract:The purpose of this panel on “Global Intelligent Governance—A Collaborative Platform (GIG-CP)” is to discuss the feasibility and need for developing a collaborative platform to facilitate a global network-to-network collaboration of research in intelligent governance (IG). The discussion could provide a guide to establish the platform which will enable collaboration among international research networks. The platform will facilitate establishing common protocols for sharing high quality and high value open data. It would transform data-driven public engagement in collaborative decision making processes. There are three aims of the project: (i) to facilitate the development of research network collaboration; (ii) to enable the design of a global data hub, and (iii) to examine the IG skills required for the future workforce.

Abstract:The "Earthrise" photograph, taken on the 1968 Apollo 8 mission, became one of the most significant images of the 20th Century. It triggered a profound shift in environmental awareness and the potential for human unity-inspiring the first Earth Day in 1970. Taking inspiration from these events 50 years later, we initiated Project Earthrise at our 2020 annual conference of inVIVO Planetary Health. This builds on the emergent concept of planetary health, which provides a shared narrative to integrate rich and diverse approaches from all aspects of society towards shared solutions to global challenges. The acute catastrophe of the COVID-19 pandemic has drawn greater attention to many other interconnected global health, environmental, social, spiritual, and economic problems that have been underappreciated or neglected for decades. This is accelerating opportunities for greater collaborative action, as many groups now focus on the necessity of a "Great Transition". While ambitious integrative efforts have never been more important, it is imperative to apply these with mutualistic value systems as a compass, as we seek to make wiser choices. Project Earthrise is our contribution to this important process. This underscores the imperative for creative ecological solutions to challenges in all systems, on all scales with advancing global urbanization in the digital age-for personal, environmental, economic and societal health alike. At the same time, our agenda seeks to equally consider our social and spiritual ecology as it does natural ecology. Revisiting the inspiration of "Earthrise", we welcome diverse perspectives from across all dimensions of the arts and the sciences, to explore novel solutions and new normative values. Building on academic rigor, we seek to place greater value on imagination, kindness and mutualism as we address our greatest challenges, for the health of people, places and planet.

Abstract:The new scientific decade (2023-2032) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) aims at searching for sustainable solutions to undesired water conditions - may it be too little, too much or too polluted. Many of the current issues originate from global change, while solutions to problems must embrace local understanding and context. The decade will explore the current water crises by searching for actionable knowledge within three themes: global and local interactions, sustainable solutions and innovative cross-cutting methods. We capitalise on previous IAHS Scientific Decades shaping a trilogy; from Hydrological Predictions (PUB) to Change and Interdisciplinarity (Panta Rhei) to Solutions (HELPING). The vision is to solve fundamental water-related environmental and societal problems by engaging with other disciplines and local stakeholders. The decade endorses mutual learning and co-creation to progress towards UN sustainable development goals. Hence, HELPING is a vehicle for putting science in action, driven by scientists working on local hydrology in coordination with local, regional, and global processes.

Abstract:The development of modern agriculture is inseparable from efforts to optimize agricultural land resources and increase sectoral competitiveness based on dynamic innovation following the challenges. Modern agriculture is characterized by applying technology and innovation that can be adapted to the conditions and needs of productive activities in the agricultural sector. Agricultural innovations can include technological and agricultural institutions' innovations that are in line with the times. Sustainable agriculture plays an essential role in sustaining natural resources for future generations. Sustainable agriculture emphasizes the need for the stability of natural ecosystems, including biological living systems and materials. This includes the maintenance of biological diversity, genetic resources, soil, water, and agro-climate resources, as well as environmental health and comfort. Moreover, the world is facing the challenge of global warming (the greenhouse effect). Modern and sustainable agriculture is essential for various problems in agriculture. Both are currently the focus of various stakeholders, such as farmers, researchers, and policymakers worldwide. Both are expected to become sustainable solutions to meet food and energy needs and minimize the impact of more significant environmental damage. International Conference on Modern Sustainable Agriculture was virtually-held in collaboration between the Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University with The International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences (ISSAAS) Indonesian Chapter and Indonesian Society for Agronomy (PERAGI). Abstract:The 6th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance, ICEGOV2012, was held in Albany, New York, United States (US) from October 22-25, 2012. It was hosted by the Center for Technology in Government, University at Albany, State University of New York under the patronage of the United States National Archives and Record Administration. The conference was supported by the Center for Electronic Governance of the United Nations University - International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), Macao SAR, which is the ICEGOV Series Organizer. The ICEGOV (International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance) series focuses on the use of technology to transform relationships between government and citizens, businesses, civil society and other governments (Electronic Governance). Established in 2007 by the Center for Electronic Governance, UNU-IIST, the series looks beyond the traditional focus on technology-enabled transformation in government (Electronic Government) towards new forms, new paradigms, and new foundations for technology-enabled governance, collaboration and sustainable development. ICEGOV is a forum where researchers and practitioners meet to test theories, share insights and report their experiences. It facilitates network- and capacity-building through a diversity of presentation formats. The conference also provides a unque developmental opportunity for participants from developing countries, nations in transition, United Nations agencies, and from a range of governmental and non-governmental organizations. Abstract:Summary In an attempt to address the large inequities faced by the plant biology communities from the Global South (i.e. countries located around the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere) at international conferences, this Viewpoint is the reflexive thinking arising from the concurrent session titled 'Arabidopsis and its translational research in the Global South' organized at the International Conference of Arabidopsis Research 2023 (ICAR 2023) in Chiba, Japan in June 2023. Here, we highlight the main obstacles plant biology communities in the Global South face in terms of knowledge production, as measured by the unequal production and citation of publications, investigating and advancing local plant genomics and biodiversity, combating disparities in gender and diversity, and current initiatives to break isolation of scientists.
