Abstract:In this paper, we consider the empirical likelihood inference for the jump-diffusion model. We construct the confidence intervals based on the empirical likelihood for the infinitesimal moments in the jump-diffusion models. They are better than the confidence intervals which are based on the asymptotic normality of point estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an empirical likelihood method to construct empirical likelihood estimators for nonparametric drift and diffusion functions in the second-order diffusion model, and the consistency and asymptotic normality of the empirical likelihood estimators are obtained. Moreover, the nonsymmetric confidence intervals for drift and diffusion functions based on empirical likelihood methods are obtained, and the adjusted empirical log-likelihood ratio is proved to be asymptotically standard chi-square under some mild conditions.

Abstract:In this article, we present the local linear estimations for diffusion coefficient and drift coefficient in the second-order diffusion model. Abstract:Let ( X_t,Z_t) _t≥ 0 be the regime-switching jump diffusion process with invariant measure μ . We aim to approximate μ using the Euler–Maruyama (EM) scheme with decreasing step sequence Γ =(γ _n)_n∈ℕ . Under some appropriate dissipative conditions and uniform ellipticity assumptions on the coefficients of the related stochastic differential equation (SDE), we show that the error between μ and the invariant measure associated with the EM scheme is bounded by O(√(γ _n)) . In particular, we derive a better convergence rate O(γ _n) for the additive case and the continuous case.

Abstract:The occurrence‐50 of economic policies and other sudden and large shocks often bring out jumps in financial data, which can be characterized through continuous‐time jump‐diffusion model. In this article, we present the double smoothed non‐parametric approach for infinitesimal conditional volatility of jump‐diffusion model based on high frequency data. Under certain minimal conditions, we obtain the strong consistency and asymptotic normality for the estimator as the time span T → ∞ and the sample interval . The procedure and asymptotic behavior can be applied for both Harris recurrent and positive Harris recurrent processes. The finite sample properties of the underlying double smoothed volatility estimator are verified through Monte Carlo simulation and Shanghai Interbank Offered Rate in China for application.

Abstract:Two new methods of simulating Lévy processes are presented in this paper. The first one is to simulate the small jump part of a Lévy process by the classical rejection method, which can generate the exact sampling. The second is to simulate the Lévy process by the compound Poisson process with corrected density at zero, it is efficient, robust, and can be used in multivariate setting.

Abstract:This paper proposes a two-stage method for estimating parameters in the fractional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck model based on discrete-sampled observations. In the first stage, two “diffusion” parameters (i.e. the Hurst parameter and the volatility parameter) are estimated based on the second order differences obtained at two different time scales. Their asymptotic theory is established under an in-fill asymptotic scheme. In the second stage, the two drift parameters are estimated based on the ergodic theorem. Their asymptotic theory is established under a double asymptotic scheme. Extensive simulation studies show that the proposed estimators perform well. Two empirical studies are carried out. The first empirical study, based on the daily VIX data over 2004-2017, shows that VIX is rough. The Hurst parameter is slightly but statistically significantly less than one half. It also shows that the persistence parameter is much larger than one divided by the time span, suggesting that a commonly adopted assumption in the literature can be too strong. The second empirical study, based on the daily realized volatility of S&P 500, DJIA and Nasdaq over 2011-2017, shows that the Hurst parameter is much less than one half and the persistence parameter is significantly larger than one divided by the time span. Likelihood Estimation of Jump-Diffusions. Extensions from Diffusions to Jump-Diffusions, Implementation with Automatic Differentiation, and Applications

Abstract:This thesis considers the problem of likelihood-based parameter estimation for time-homogeneous jump-diffusion processes. The problem is that there often is no analytic solution to the stochastic differential equations driving the process. Thus, the transition density of the process is unknown. In this thesis we build on the solution presented in Preston and Wood (2012), where the transition density of a time-homogeneous diffusion process is approximated by a saddlepoint approximation based on the approximated solution following from discretization schemes, which in turn stems from an Itô-Taylor expansion of the stochastic differential equation. The mathematical tools for understanding the method in Preston and Wood (2012) and the extended methods to jump-diffusions are developed. We reproduce the results found here, and extend the analysis with maximum likelihood estimation for benchmark processes such as the geometric Brownian motion, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, and the Merton model. We also investigate the use of the renormalized saddlepoint approximation in the context of maximum likelihood estimation. The implementation of the methods is carried out with the newly released parallel programming package, Template Model Builder, which uses automatic differentiation among other things. We therefore give an introduction to the basics of automatic differentiation in the context of our computational problems, and also extend the Template Model Builder package to e.g. allow for complex numbers. Thereafter we apply the methods developed in previous chapters to the analysis of stock prices modelled as nonlinear stochastic differential equations, with and without jumps. Finally we briefly analyse some models for stochastic volatility.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop local M-estimation for the infinitesimal moments in the jump-diffusion model based on discrete-time observations. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the local M-estimators for the infinitesimal moments are obtained under mild conditions. The simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed estimators perform well in robustness.

Abstract:Second-order diffusion process can not only model integrated and differentiated diffusion processes but also overcome the difficulties associated with the nondifferentiability of the Brownian motion, so these models play an important role in econometric analysis. In this paper, we propose a re-weighted estimator of the diffusion coefficient in the second-order diffusion model. Consistence of the estimator is proved under appropriate conditions and the conditions that ensure the asymptotic normality are also stated. The performance of the proposed estimator is assessed by simulation study.

Abstract:In this paper, enlightened by the asymptotic expansion methodology developed by Li [(2013). Maximum-likelihood estimation for diffusion processes via closed-form density expansions. Annals of Statistics 41: 1350-1380] and Li and Chen [(2016). Estimating jump-diffusions using closed-form likelihood expansions. Journal of Econometrics 195(1): 51-70], we propose a Taylor-type approximation for the transition densities of the stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by the gamma processes, a special type of Levy processes. After representing the transition density as a conditional expectation of Dirac delta function acting on the solution of the related SDE, the key technical method for calculating the expectation of multiple stochastic integrals conditional on the gamma process is presented. To numerically test the efficiency of our method, we examine the pure jump Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model and its extensions to two jump-diffusion models. For each model, the maximum relative error between our approximated transition density and the benchmark density obtained by the inverse Fourier transform of the characteristic function is sufficiently small, which shows the efficiency of our approximated method.

Abstract:This study explores a Gaussian quasi-likelihood approach for estimating parameters of diffusion processes with Markovian regime switching. Assuming the ergodicity under high-frequency sampling, we will show the asymptotic normality of the unknown parameters contained in the drift and diffusion coefficients and present a consistent explicit estimator for the generator of the Markov chain. Simulation experiments are conducted to illustrate the theoretical results obtained.

Abstract:This work aims at making a comprehensive contribution in the general area of parametric inference for discretely observed diffusion processes. Established approaches for likelihood-based estimation invoke a time-discretisation scheme for the approximation of the intractable transition dynamics of the Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) model over finite time periods. The scheme is applied for a step-size that is either user-selected or determined by the data. Recent research has highlighted the critical ef-fect of the choice of numerical scheme on the behaviour of derived parameter estimates in the setting of hypo-elliptic SDEs. In brief, in our work, first, we develop two weak second order sampling schemes (to cover both hypo-elliptic and elliptic SDEs) and produce a small time expansion for the density of the schemes to form a proxy for the true intractable SDE transition density. Then, we establish a collection of analytic results for likelihood-based parameter estimates obtained via the formed proxies, thus providing a theoretical framework that showcases advantages from the use of the developed methodology for SDE calibration. We present numerical results from carrying out classical or Bayesian inference, for both elliptic and hypo-elliptic SDEs.

Abstract:Subordinate diffusions are constructed by time changing diffusion processes with an independent Lévy subordinator. This is a rich family of Markovian jump processes which exhibit a variety of jump behavior and have found many applications. This paper studies parametric inference of discretely observed ergodic subordinate diffusions. We solve the identifiability problem for these processes using spectral theory and propose a two-step estimation procedure based on estimating functions. In the first step, we use an estimating function that only involves diffusion parameters. In the second step, a martingale estimating function based on eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the subordinate diffusion is used to estimate the parameters of the Lévy subordinator and the problem of how to choose the weighting matrix is solved. When the eigenpairs do not have analytical expressions, we apply the constant perturbation method with high order corrections to calculate them numerically and the martingale estimating function can be computed efficiently. Consistency and asymptotic normality of our estimator are established considering the effect of numerical approximation. Through numerical examples, we show that our method is both computationally and statistically efficient. A subordinate diffusion model for VIX (CBOE volatility index) is developed which provides good fit to the data.
