Abstract:We demonstrate engineering of the spectral content and polarization of photoluminescence (PL) from arrayed gold nanoparticles atop a subwavelength-thin dielectric spacer and optically-thick gold film, a configuration that supports gap-surface plasmon resonances (GSPRs). Choice of shapes and dimensions of gold nanoparticles influences the GSPR wavelength and polarization characteristics, thereby allowing us to enhance and spectrally mold the plasmon-assisted PL while simultaneously controlling its polarization. In order to understand the underlying physics behind the plasmon-enhanced PL, we develop a simple model that faithfully reproduces all features observed in our experiments showing also good quantitative agreement for the PL enhancement

Abstract:Polymeric nanofibers containing gold nanorods (GNRs) are aligned in a uniform orientation through electrospinning. The dispersive and absorptive parts of the third-order optical nonlinear optical refractive index of the composite film measured by polarization dependent z-scan method are demonstrated to be anisotropically enhanced. Anisotropic optical response of the aligned GNRs and its connection with the ultrafast electron dynamics are discussed in light of the results of resonant femtosecond pump-probe experiments. The significant appearance of anisotropic nonlinear optical properties of ensembles of GNRs is attributed to the sensitive excitation of longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of highly aligned GNRs. For the macroscopic applications of ensembles of GNRs, such as passive mode-locking and all-optical switching, the experimental results demonstrate that the alignment of GNRs through electrospinning should be very high efficient, and economic.

Abstract:We show that the fluorescence emission from individual hybrid nanostructures composed of Au nanorod cores and oxazine 725-embedded mesostructured silica shells is strongly polarized, with the degree of polarization being equal to that of the light scattered by the nanorod and varying from 0 to 1 as the longitudinal plasmon resonance wavelength is increased. Our analyses indicate that the interactions of the plasmon resonance of the nanorod with the excitation and emission processes of the fluorophores are temporally separated under unsaturated excitation conditions. The emission polarization is found through electrodynamic calculations to arise from the plasmon-coupled emission instead of the plasmon-enhanced excitation polarization. The emission carries the direction and polarization properties that are essentially determined by the dipolar plasmon of the nanorod antenna. Our results therefore provide direct and concrete evidence for the plasmophore that has been proposed recently for plasmon-enhanced fluorescence.

Abstract:A low-cost and effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate consisting of aligned gold nanorods is obtained by stretching the poly(vinyl alcohol) nanorods composite film doped with the probe molecule. The SERS intensity of characteristic vibrational band of the probe is observed obviously dependent on the angle (θ) between incident polarization and major axis of nanorod. The relationship between them manifests a cos2 θ dependence. The result is illustrated from both the localized field enhancement and optical antenna effect of gold nanorod. The finite element method calculation is also performed to further confirm the conclusion.

Abstract:Although fluorescence and lifetimes of nano- scale emitters can be manipulated by plasmonic materials, it is harder to control polarization due to strict requirements on emitter environments. An ability to engineer 3D nanoarchitectures with nanoscale precision is needed for controlled polarization of nanoscale emitters. Here, we show that prescribed 3D heterocluster architectures with polarized emission can be successfully assembled from nanoscale fluorescent emitters and metallic nanoparticles using DNA-based self-assembly methods. An octahedral DNA origami frame serves as a programmable scaffold for heterogeneous nanoparticle assembly into prescribed clusters. Internal space and external connections of the frames are programmed to coordinate spherical quantum dots (QDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into heterocluster architectures through site-specific DNA encodings. We demonstrate and characterize assembly of these architectures using in situ and ex situ structural methods. These cluster nanodevices exhibit polarized light emission with a plasmon-induced dipole along the QD-AuNP nanocluster axis, as observed by single-cluster optical probing. Moreover, emittance properties can be tuned via cluster design. Through a systematic study, we analyzed and established the correlation between cluster architecture, cluster orientation, and polarized emission at a single-emitter level. Excellent correspondence between the optical behavior of these clusters and theoretical predictions was observed. This approach provides the basis for rational creation of single-emitter 3D nanodevices with controllable polarization output using a highly customizable DNA assembly platform.

Abstract:The use of one-dimensional nano- and microstructured semiconductor and lanthanide materials is attractive for polarized-light-emission studies. Up-conversion emission from single-nanorod or anisotropic nanoparticles with a degree of polarization has also been discussed. However, microscale arrays of nanoparticles, especially well-aligned one-dimensional nanostructures as well as their up-conversion polarization characterization, have not been investigated yet. Herein, we present a novel and facile paradigm for preparing highly aligned arrays of lanthanide-doped KMnF3 (KMnF3:Ln) perovskite nanowires, which are good candidates for polarized up-conversion emission studies. These perovskite nanowires, with a width of 10 nm and length of a few micrometers, are formed through the oriented attachment of KMnF3:Ln nanocubes along the [001] direction. By the employment of KMnF3:Ln nanowire gel as nanoink, a direct-writing method is developed to obtain diverse types of aligned patterns from the nanoscale to the wafer scale. Up-conversion emissions from the highly aligned nanowire arrays are polarized along the array direction with a polarization degree up to 60%. Taking advantage of microscopic nanowire arrays, these polarized up-conversion emissions should offer potential applications in light or information transportation.

Abstract:Polarizers provide convenience in generating polarized light, meanwhile their adoption raises :problems of extra weight, cost, and energy loss. Aiming to realize polarizer-free polarized light sources, herein, We present a plasmonic approach to achieve direct generation of linearly polarized optical waves at the nanometer scale. Periodic slot nanoantenna arrays are fabricated, which are driven by the transition dipole moments of luminescent semiconductor quantum dots. By harnessing interactions between quantum dots and scattered fields from the nanoantennas, spontaneous emission with a high degree of linear polarization is achieved from such hybrid:,antenna system with polarization perpendicular to antenna Slot. We also demonstrate that the polarization is engineerable in aspects of both spectrum and magnitude by tailoring plasmonic resonance of the antenna arrays: Our findings will establish a basis for the development of innovative polarized light-emitting devices, which are useful in optical displays, spectroscopic techniques, optical telecommunications, and So forth.

Herein, by the template-assisted strategy, well-aligned lead-free metal halide Cs3Cu2I5 nanowire (NW) arrays are fabricated by evaporating the precursor ink in the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) for polarized emission. The Cs3Cu2I5/AAO composite film emits highly polarized light with a degree of polarization (DOP) of 0.50. Furthermore, by changing the molar ratio of CsI/CuI, the stability of Cs3Cu2I5 precursor inks is improved. Finally, an ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diode (LED) is adopted to pump the composite film to achieve a blue LED device. The reported Cs3Cu2I5/AAO composite film with highly polarized light emissions will have great potential for polarized emission applications such as liquid crystal display backlights, waveguides, and lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrated a simple but general method to prepare large-area flexible nanocomposites with oriented gold nanorods (GNRs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film by directly introducing a GNR colloidal solution into a PVA aqueous solution and using solid-state drawing techniques. The optical property of the nanocomposite exhibits a strong dependence on the angle between the polarization of the incident light and the drawing direction of the nanocomposite film. The color of the composite film can be intelligently tuned and displays red and blue when the light polarization is switched parallel to and perpendicular to the drawing direction, respectively. These composite films have promise for application in a single electrooptical device.

Abstract:Great efforts have been devoted to control the polarization state, the transmission direction, and the phase of light within a very confined space in recent decades. Here, we present a two-dimensional metastructure made of an array of unisized split rings with different opening orientations on the surface of a SiO2-silver bilayer. This structure possesses an unexpectedly high polarization conversion ratio and generates significantly strong anomalous reflection beams (over 70% of incident light intensity) over a broad frequency range (1100-1750 nm). Functionally, it is able to turn either a linearly polarized incident light or natural light into two perfect circularly polarized beams with the same amplitude yet different handedness to different directions. These features demonstrate a clear example of momentum conservation and can be applied to detect/manipulate the propagation of circularly polarized light.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum rods of cadmium selenide (CdSe) exhibit linearly polarized emission. Empirical pseudopotential calculations predict that slightly elongated CdSe nanocrystals have polarized emission along the long axis, unlike spherical dots, which emit plane-polarized light. Single-molecule luminescence spectroscopy measurements on CdSe quantum rods with an aspect ratio between 1 and 30 confirm a sharp transition from nonpolarized to purely linearly polarized emission at an aspect ratio of 2. Linearly polarized luminescent chromophores are highly desirable in a variety of applications.

Abstract:Chiral superstructures with polarized emission are created through a two‐step process, involving first the magnetothermal synthesis of magnetite/perovskite hybrid nanorods and then their assembly in external magnetic fields. The resulting superstructures exhibit linear or circularly polarized emission, depending on the chirality of the magnetic fields. Magnetic fields are uniquely valuable for creating colloidal nanostructured materials, not only providing a means for controlled synthesis but also guiding their self‐assembly into distinct superstructures. In this study, a magnetothermal process for synthesizing hybrid nanostructures comprising ferrimagnetic magnetite nanorods coated with fluorescent perovskite nanocrystals is reported and their magnetic assembly into superstructures capable of emitting linear and circularly polarized light are demonstrated. Under UV excitation, the superstructures assembled in a liner magnetic field produce linear polarized luminescence, and those assembled in a chiral magnetic field exhibit strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a glum value up to 0.44 (±0.004). The CPL is believed to originate from the dipolar interaction between neighboring perovskite nanocrystals attached to the chiral assemblies and the chiral‐selective absorption of the perovskite emission by the magnetite phase. The magnetic synthesis and assembly approaches and the resulting distinctive chiral superstructures are anticipated to open up new avenues for designing diverse functional chiroptical devices.

Abstract:The polarization-sensitive optical properties of semiconductor nanorods (NRs) are attractive characteristics for optical devices. Although oriented NR films can provide convenient integration and new application opportunities, the realization of large-area NR films with polarized photoluminescence (PL) remains a challenge. Herein, we fabricated ordered CdSe/CdS NR films on an arbitrary substrate using the Langmuir-Blodgett technology. Polarization-sensitive PL was observed for the NR films. The band-edge exciton fine structure owing to the rod-like morphology and the dielectric effect of the orderly arranged NRs were discussed with a focus on the contribution to polarized photons. The degree of linear polarization of the CdSe/CdS NR films excited a circularly polarized light was approximately 0.30. When linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light was used as the excitation source, the PL intensity of the NR films periodically varied with the polarization direction of the UV light. The corresponding PL polarization (i.e., "excitation polarization") was approximately 0.28. The polarization-sensitive fluorescence (approximately 526 nm) excited by the UV-polarized light (325 nm) demonstrates the potential for realizing low-cost polarization-sensitive devices using only a visible light charge-coupled device system.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate the bulk self-alignment of gold nanorods (GNRs) dispersed in lyotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) with high optical absorption coefficient at the surface plasmon resonant wavelength. The polymer-coated GNRs which show spontaneous long-range orientational ordering along the director of LC host exhibit long-term stability as well as high concentration. External magnetic field and shearing allow for alignment and realignment of the orientation of gold nanorods by changing the director of the liquid crystal matrix. This results in a switchable polarization-sensitive surface plasmon resonance exhibiting stark differences from that of the same nanorods in isotropic fluids. The devise-scale bulk nanoparticle alignment may enable optical metamaterial mass production and control of surface plasmon resonance of nanoparticles.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanomaterials usually possess unique anisotropic chemical or physical properties. For practical device applications, one of the biggest challenges is their large-scale assembly with predesigned architecture to render optimized collective properties. Based on our previous studies, here we report an extended investigation on the macroscopically aligned assembly of gold nanorods with tunable aspect ratio (AR) in transparent polymer films based on the electrospinning technique. The optical properties of the composite films were investigated using polarized extinction spectra and the Z-scan technique. Due to the collective longitudinal LSPR of the macroscopically aligned gold nanorods, the transparent composite films exhibited anisotropically enhanced optical nonlinearity. The intensity of the nonlinear optical signal of the films can be tuned by varying the polarization direction of the laser on the films. Moreover, the influence from the AR and the doping concentration of GNRs on the optical properties of the composite films was also investigated. To demonstrate an example of practical applications, the composite film was employed as a saturable absorber to construct a pulsed fiber laser. Inspiringly, the pulsed fiber laser with switchable mode-locking and Q-switching operation modes was realized successfully. The switching of the operation mode of the laser can be triggered simply through variation of the laser's polarization direction. Such a pulse-width tunable fiber laser is potentially useful in various application scenarios.
Polarized Upconversion of sub-100 nm Single Nanoparticles

Abstract:Upconversion nanoparticles are popular as imaging probes due to their advantages in photostability and controllable emission dimensions. However, upconversion polarization remains largely uncharted with previous reports limited to microstructures. In this work, we report the observation of polarized upconversion emissions from β-NaYF4 single nanostructures below 100 nm. At the sub-100 nm scale, nanorods, nanodiscs, and nanoplates exhibit distinctive polarization degrees despite the same doping concentrations of lanthanides. We find this varied polarization degree results from the crystallographic orientation of nanostructure in relation to the light field and can be linked to the distinctive emission spectrum profile with varied Stark splitting transition ratios from Er3+. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the polarization properties of upconversion nanoparticles, revealing a previously unexplored aspect of light emission. This discovery expands our knowledge of upconversion nanoparticles and also opens new possibilities for their use in future imaging and sensing applications, where polarization sensitivity is crucial.
