Abstract:Time-keeping clock is one of the most important parts in COMPASS global navigation satellite system (GNSS) of China and the synchronization of these time-keeping clocks is the basis of GNSS. Recently, we have engaged in developing a transportable atomic clock based on Cd-113(+) ions, which is potentially applied in the comparison of atomic clocks in different locations, including the time-keeping clocks at the ground stations of the COMPASS system. To operate a high precision microwave atomic clock, one has to measure its clock transition frequency precisely at zero external magnetic field. In this paper, the progress of the precision measurement of the ground-state hyperfine splitting of laser-cooled Cd-113(+) ions is reported. In the previous experiment, the hyperfine splitting was measured to be 15,199,862,854.96(12) Hz, using Ramsey's separated oscillation fields technique. Recently, by upgrading the ion trap apparatus, the control time sequence, and the magnetic field stabilization, we obtained a preliminary improved result of 15,199,862,855.013 Hz. This value is nearly one order of magnitude more accurate than the results obtained before.

Abstract:We measured the ground-state hyperfine splitting of trapped 113Cd+ ions to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz with a fractional uncertainty of 1.8×10-14. The ions were trapped and laser-cooled in a linear quadrupole Paul trap. The fractional frequency stability was measured to be 4.2×10-13/τ, obtained from Ramsey fringes of high signal-to-noise ratios and taken over a measurement time of nearly 5 h, which is close to the short-term stability limit estimated from the Dick effect. Our result is consistent with previously reported values, but the measurement precision is four times better than the best result obtained to date.

Abstract:As a candidate for the next generation microwave clock, microwave atomic clocks based on trapped ions are currently studied worldwide. Since 2010, our team at Tsinghua University has been committed to developing a high-performance $^{113}\text{Cd}^{+}$ microwave ion clock. In 2021, the laser-cooled cadmium-ion microwave clock constructed in our laboratory demonstrated remarkable performance, with a short-term instability of $4.2\times 10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau}$ and a relative frequency uncertainty of $1.8\times 10^{-14}$ , improving nearly three orders of magnitude compared to the result from JPL. The ground-state hyperfine splitting of $^{113}\text{Cd}^{+}$ was determined to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz, currently the most accurate measurement result for this transition frequency. Apart from that, we introduced the sympathetic cooling technology into the experiment of cadmium-ion microwave clock. Using $^{40}\text{Ca}^{+}$ as the coolant ion, we obtained Ramsey patterns with a free evolution time of up to 100 seconds, ultimately improving the short-term instability of the system to $3.48\times 10^{-13}/\sqrt{\tau}$ .

Abstract:Regarding microwave frequency standards based on trapped ions, we report on the determination of the hyperfine splittings and the Land g(J) factors of Cd-111,113(+). The hyperfine splittings and Land g(J) factors of the 5s(2)S(1/2) and 5p(2)P(1/2,3/2) states of Cd-111,113(+) are calculated using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock scheme. Furthermore, the hyperfine splittings of the 5p(2)P(3/2) state of Cd-111,113(+) are derived based on the laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The Cd+ ions are confined in a linear Paul trap and sympathetically cooled by laser-cooled Ca+ ions. The calculated values and the derived values are cross-checked, thereby guaranteeing the reliability of our results. The results provided in this paper can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the clock transition and the accuracy of the second-order Zeeman shift correction, thus further improving the stability and accuracy of the microwave frequency standards based on trapped Cd-111,113(+) ions.

Abstract:We present absolute frequency measurements of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($229$nm) and ${}^{3}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($326$nm) transitions for all naturally occurring isotopes of cadmium. The isotope shifts and hyperfine intervals of the fermionic isotopes are determined with an accuracy of 3.3MHz. We find that quantum interference in the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ transition causes an error of up to 29(5)MHz in determining the hyperfine splitting, when not accounted for with an appropriate model. Using a King-plot analysis, we extract the field- and mass-shift parameters and determine nuclear charge radius differences for the fermions. The lifetime of the $^1\text{P}_1$ state is determined to be 1.60(5)ns by measuring the natural linewidth of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ transition. These results resolve significant discrepancies among previous measurements.

Abstract:We report recent experimental progress toward a trapped 113Cd+ ion microwave frequency standard. With laser cooling, a large number of trapped cadmium ions are cooled to crystallization and the temperature of the ion crystal is measured to be 16±3 mK. The second order Doppler frequency shift, a main limiting factor of the atomic clock's performance, is estimated to be less than 1 × 10−16.

Abstract:The hyperfine structure (hfs) of Cs 7P 1/2 state is measured utilizing four-level active optical clock. Combing the Doppler effect and the active stimulated emission, the accuracy of Cs 7P 1/2 hfs is expected to be optimized. The correction terms of experimental results, such as cavity-pulling effect, light shift and collision shift, are analyzed. Such a scheme can be widely extended to other alkali-metal atoms to enrich the measurements of hfs.

Abstract:Optical atomic clocks using highly-charged ions hold an intriguing promise of metrology at the 19th significant figure. Here we study transitions within the $4f^{12}$ ground-state electronic configuration of highly charged ions. We consider isotopes lacking hyperfine structure and show that the detrimental effects of coupling of electronic quadrupole moments to gradients of trapping electric field can be effectively reduced by using specially chosen virtual clock transitions. The estimated systematic fractional clock accuracy is shown to be below $10^{-19}$.

High precision measurement of the hyperfine splitting and ac Stark shift of the $7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ state in atomic cesium

Abstract:We report the measurement of hyperfine splitting in the $7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ state of $^{133}$Cs using high resolution Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy in a Cs vapor cell. We determine the hyperfine coupling constants $A = 7.3509(9)$ MHz and $B = -0.041(8)$ MHz, which represent an order of magnitude improvement in the precision. We also obtain bounds on the magnitude of the nuclear magnetic octupole coupling constant $C$. Additionally, we measure the ac Stark shift of the $6s$ $^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ transition at 767.8 nm to be $-49 \pm 5$ Hz/(W/cm$^2$), in agreement with theoretical calculations. We further report the measurement of collisional shift [$-32.6 \pm 2.0$ kHz/mTorr] and pressure broadening for the individual hyperfine levels of the $6s$ $^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ transition. These measurements provide valuable inputs for analysis of systematic effects in optical frequency standards based on the cesium $6s$ $^{2}S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7d$ $^{2}D_{3/2}$ two-photon transition
