Abstract:The resonance fluorescence properties in the steady-state regime are investigated for a driven cascaded exciton-biexciton quantum dot coupled to the two-dimensional black phosphorus metasurfaces. It is shown that for the material parameters under consideration, both the elliptic and hyperbolic dispersion patterns of the surface plasmon modes are achievable according to the variation of the carrier concentration. Further study on the Purcell factor indicates unequal enhancements in the spontaneous decay of the orthogonal in-plane dipoles. Motivated by this intriguing phenomenon, we then investigate the steady-state properties of the driven quantum dot, where the populations of the dressed levels are highly tunable by engineering the anisotropy of the surfaces. As a result, the manipulation of the carrier concentration will lead to strong modifications in the resonance fluorescence. Under certain conditions, one can observe the squeezing of two-mode noise spectra with different resonances and polarizations. Although at the expense of declines in the photon-sideband detunings, it is feasible to enhance the two-mode squeezing by gate doping. Our proposal can be easily extended to other hybrid systems containing anisotropic metasurfaces, which are important for the development of quantum information science.

Abstract:We describe a method that enables free-standing whispering-gallery-mode microresonators, and report spectral tuning of photonic molecules formed by coupled free and on-chip resonators with different geometries and materials. We study direct coupling via evanescent fields of free silica microtoroids and microspheres with on-chip polymer coated silica microtoroids. We demonstrate thermal tuning of resonance modes to achieve maximal spectral overlap, mode splitting induced by direct coupling, and the effects of distance between the resonators on the splitting spectra.

Abstract:We study the excitation conditions of the supported field modes, as well as the spontaneous decay property of a two-level quantum emitter coupled to photonic structures containing topological insulators (TIs) and left-handed materials. Within the proper field quantization scheme, the spontaneous decay rates of dipoles with different polarizations are expressed in forms of the Green's functions. We find that in the proposed structure, the variation in the topological magnetoelectric polarizability (TMP) has a deterministic effect on the excitation of different field modes. As the result, the spontaneous decay property of the quantum emitter can be engineered. For a dipole placed in different spatial regions, the spontaneous decay feature indicates a dominant contribution from the waveguide modes, the surface plasmon modes or the free vacuum modes. Moreover, a special kind of the surface plasmon modes displaying asymmetric density of states at the interfaces, becomes legal in the presence of nontrivial TIs. These phenomena manifest the feasibility in controlling dipole emissions via manipulations of the topological magnetoelectric (TME) effect. Our results have potential applications in quantum technologies relied on the accurate control over light-matter interactions.

Abstract:The spectral signatures of chemical molecules are dependent on the hybridization of electronic states. The artificial photonic molecules formed by structured optical microcavities, exhibiting Fano features with sharp asymmetric line shape and strong field enhancement, hold various potential applications in sensors, optical switches, lasing spasers, optical diodes, etc. To design high‐performance photonic devices, it is of great importance to gain the formation and modulation mechanisms of Fano resonance in various artificial photonic molecules. This review is focused on the Fano resonance in artificial photonic molecules. It starts by discussing the properties of Fano resonance, followed by a detailed discussion of the coupled oscillator model and coupled mode theory that could reveal the underlying mechanisms. Then, different types of photonic molecules for realizing Fano resonance are presented, and several representative exciting applications are introduced. Finally, a summary and a brief outlook on challenges are discussed for Fano resonance in artificial photonic molecules.

Abstract:Thermally tunable Fano and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer assisted Bragg grating-microring coupled resonant system on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. In this paper, the destructive and constructive coupling between the two resonators, the microring resonator and the Fabry-Perot resonator formed by two Bragg gratings, give rise to the Fano and EIT resonances, respectively. The resonance lineshape can be controlled and converted by tuning the optical path length of the MZI arm. The device performance has been theoretically analyzed by using a specially developed numerical model. The coupled resonant system was designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial (SOI) platform. The tuning and conversion of the resonance lineshape by thermo-optical effect have been experimentally observed and verified, with good agreement between the experimental data and the simulations.

Abstract:This work takes inspiration from chemistry where the spectral characteristics of the molecules are determined by hybridization of electronic states evolving from the individual atomic orbitals. Based on analogy between quantum mechanics and the classical electrodynamics, we sorted dielectric microspheres with almost identical positions of their whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances. Using these microspheres as classical photonic atoms, we assembled them in a wide range of structures including linear chains and planar photonic molecules. We studied WGM hybridization effects in such structures using side coupling by tapered microfibers as well as finite difference time domain modeling. We demonstrated that the patterns of WGM spectral splitting are representative of the symmetry, number of constituting atoms and topology of the photonic molecules which in principle can be viewed as "spectral signatures" of various molecules. We also show new ways of controlling WGM coupling constants in such molecules. Excellent agreement was found between measured transmission spectra and spectral signatures of photonic molecules predicted by simulation.
Optical super-resonance in a customized P T-symmetric system of hybrid interaction

Abstract:We investigate the optical resonances in coupled meta-atoms with hybrid interaction pathways. One interaction pathway is the directly near-field coupling between the two meta-atoms. The other interaction pathway is via the continuum in a waveguide functioned as a common bus connecting them. We show that by properly introducing gain or loss into the meta-atoms, the hybrid optical system becomes parity-time (P T) symmetric, in which the effective coupling rate can be customized by manipulating the length of the waveguide. At the exact phase of the customized P T symmetry, the coupled meta-atoms support discrete super-resonant modes that can be observed from the transmission spectra as extremely sharp peaks. At an exception point where the eigenmodes coalesce, albeit the transmission curve is flat, a high-Q factor of the localized field in the meta-atoms can be obtained. Similarities of the super-resonance with the bound states in the continuum (BICs) are discussed. This investigation promotes our understanding about the ways in realizing high-Q optical resonance especially by manipulating the distributions of loss and gain via the concepts of P T and BICs. Many attractive applications are expected.
Coherent interaction of orthogonal polarization modes in a photonic crystal nanofiber cavity

Abstract:We show that coherent interaction between two sets of multiple resonances leads to exotic resonant effects, such as Fano-type resonances, optical analogue of electro-magnetically induced transparency, and avoided crossing between modes, under different coupling regimes. We experimentally demonstrate such resonant effects in a photonic crystal nanofiber cavity using two sets of cavity modes with orthogonal polarizations. The interaction between the modes arises due to intra-cavity polarization mixing. The observed line shapes are reproduced using a multiple-mode interaction model. Such spectral characteristics may further enhance the capabilities of the nanofiber cavity as a fiber-in-line platform for nanophotonics and quantum photonics applications.
Multiple Interacting Photonic Modes in Strongly Coupled Organic Microcavities

Abstract:Room temperature cavity quantum electrodynamics with molecular materials in optical cavities offers exciting prospects for controlling electronic, nuclear and photonic degrees of freedom for applications in physics, chemistry and materials science. However, achieving strong coupling with molecular ensembles typically requires high molecular densities and substantial electromagnetic field confinement. These conditions usually involve a significant degree of molecular disorder and a highly structured photonic density of states. It remains unclear to what extent these additional complexities modify the usual physical picture of strong coupling developed for atoms and inorganic semiconductors. Using a microscopic quantum description of molecular ensembles in realistic multimode optical resonators, we show that the emergence of a vacuum Rabi splitting in linear spectroscopy is a necessary but not sufficient metric of coherent admixing between light and matter. In low finesse multi-mode situations we find that molecular dipoles can be partially hybridised with photonic dissipation channels associated with off-resonant cavity modes. These vacuum-induced dissipative processes ultimately limit the extent of light-matter coherence that the system can sustain.

Abstract:Photonic molecules - particular systems composed of coupled optical resonators - emulate the behavior of complex physical systems exhibiting discrete energy levels. In this work, we present a novel photonic molecule composed of two strongly coupled, mid-infrared ring quantum cascade lasers. We explore both experimentally and numerically the key features of the photonic molecule such as the energy level splitting of bonding and antibonding supermodes. Due to the large size of the resonators, the energy splitting results in bands containing tens of modes. Each of these modes is furthermore doubly degenerate with respect to the direction of propagation, namely clockwise and counterclockwise. We explore several methods to carefully break these symmetries of the system in a controlled manner by introducing spatial and temporal asymmetries in the pumping scheme of the ring lasers. By employing these techniques, we achieve a high degree of precision in the dynamic control of the photonic molecule. Owing to their inherent suitability for on-chip integration, this new class of devices may enable applications as varied as novel mid-infrared sensors or a rich playground for studying non-Hermitian photonics and quantum optics with quantum cascade lasers.

Manipulating Fano coupling in an opto-thermoelectric field

Abstract:Fano resonances in photonics arise from the coupling and interference between two resonant modes in structures with broken symmetry. They feature an uneven and narrow and tunable lineshape, and are ideally suited for optical spectroscopy. Many Fano resonance structures have been suggested in nanophotonics over the last ten years, but reconfigurability and tailored design remain challenging. Herein, we propose an all-optical pick-and-place approach aimed at assemble Fano metamolecules of various geometries and compositions in a reconfigurable manner. We study their coupling behavior by in-situ dark-field scattering spectroscopy. Driven by a light-directed opto-thermoelectric field, silicon nanoparticles with high quality-factor Mie resonances (discrete states) and low-loss BaTiO3 nanoparticles (continuum states) are assembled into all-dielectric heterodimers, where distinct Fano resonances are observed. The Fano parameter can be adjusted by changing the resonant frequency of the discrete states or the light polarization. We also show tunable coupling strength and multiple Fano resonances by altering the number of continuum states and discrete states in dielectric heterooligomers. Our work offers a general design rule for Fano resonance and an all-optical platform for controlling Fano coupling on demand.

The bandgap-detuned excitation regime in photonic-crystal resonators

Abstract:Control of nonlinear interactions in microresonators enhances access to classical and quantum field states across nearly limitless bandwidth. A recent innovation has been to leverage coherent scattering of the intraresonator pump as a control of group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear frequency shifts, which are precursors for the dynamical evolution of new field states. A uniform periodicity nanostructure addresses backscattering with one resonator mode, and pumping that mode enables universal phase-matching for four-wave mixing with control by the bandgap. Yet, since nonlinear-resonator phenomena are intrinsically multimode and exhibit complex modelocking, here we demonstrate a new approach to controlling nonlinear interactions by creating bandgap modes completely separate from the pump laser. We explore this bandgap-detuned excitation regime through generation of benchmark optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and soliton microcombs. Indeed, we show that mode-locked states are phase matched more effectively in the bandgap-detuned regime in which we directly control the modal Kerr shift with the bandgaps without perturbing the pump field. In particular, bandgap-detuned excitation enables an arbitrary control of backscattering as a versatile tool for mode-locked state engineering. Our experiments leverage nanophotonic resonators for phase matching of OPOs and solitons, leading to control over threshold power, conversion efficiency, and emission direction that enable application advances in high-capacity signaling and computing, signal generation, and quantum sensing.

Multiplexing spectral line shape of waveguide transmission by photonic spin-orbit interaction

Abstract:Manipulating the spectral line shape exhibits great potential in realizing active optical circuits with switching, sensing, and modulation capabilities. Exploring unusual line shapes, such as Fano resonance and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), has attracted substantial interest. Conventional methods of engineering the spectral line shape have limited tunability and face challenges in multiplexing different spectral line shapes. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate a new mechanism to tailor the transmission line shape almost at will by exploiting the interference of frequency-dependent chiral dipolar states in two helix particles sitting above a dielectric waveguide. We show that, by tuning the polarization of the chiral dipoles and exploiting transverse spin-orbit interaction, one can control the asymmetric Pancharatnam-Berry geometric phase for the excited guided waves propagating in opposite directions. The interference of the guided waves respectively excited by the two particles can give rise to transmissions with various line shapes, including Lorentzian-like, antiresonance-like, Fano-like, and EIT-like line shapes, which carry an intriguing property of line shape-momentum locking, i.e., the transmissions in opposite directions have different line shapes. Our findings open new possibilities for multiplexed and multifunctional nanophotonic designs with unprecedented capability of spectral-line shaping. The proposed structures can be conveniently integrated with optical circuits for on-chip applications.

Abstract:Near-field coupling between orthogonally twisted bright and dark mode resonances gives rise to sharp Fano-like resonances and electromagnetically induced transparency. We demonstrate that by varying the orientation of the near-field coupled bright and dark metamolecule with respect to the incident electric field, the shape and linewidth of the coupling induced transparency could be easily engineered. This particular aspect of the near-field coupled metamolecules could lead to engineered slow-light devices, narrow bandpass filters and ultrasensitive sensors.
Engineering biphoton spectral wavefunction in a silicon micro-ring resonator with split resonances

Abstract:Frequency-time is a degree of freedom suitable for photonic high-dimensional entanglement, with advantages such as compatibility with single-mode devices and insensitivity to dispersion. The engineering control of the frequency-time amplitude of a photon's electric field has been demonstrated on platforms with second-order optical nonlinearity. For integrated photonic platforms with only third-order optical nonlinearity, the engineered generation of the state remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a cavity-enhanced photon-pair source on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform that can generate both separable states and controllable entangled states in the frequency domain without post-manipulation. By choosing different resonance combinations and employing on-chip optical field differentiation, we achieve independent control over two functions that affect the joint spectral intensity (JSI) of the state. A semi-analytical model is derived to simulate the biphoton spectral wavefunction in the presence of resonance splitting and pump differentiation, and its parameters can be fully determined through fitting-based parameter extraction from the resonator's measured linear response. The measured spectral purity for the separable state is $95.5\pm 1.2\%$, while the measured JSIs for the entangled states show two- or four-peaked functions in two-dimensional frequency space. The experiments and simulations demonstrate the capacity to manipulate the frequency-domain wavefunction in a silicon-based device, which is promising for applications like quantum information processing using pulsed temporal-mode encoding or long-distance quantum key distribution.

Abstract:We present a design for spectral engineering in a metal dual distributed Bragg reflector (DBR)-based structure. Optical Tamm states and Fabry-Perot cavity mode, dual windows for light-matter interaction enhancement, can be excited simultaneously and tuned flexibly, including their respective bandwidth and resonant wavelength, due to the variable reflection phase from the outer DBR's internal surface. The design can find applications in solar cells for light trappings. Via calculations of overall absorptivity, the proposed simpler dual-states-based scheme is demonstrated to be almost as effective as the coherent-light-trapping scheme, owing to the dual-states-induced broader-band absorption enhancement.
Ultrafast Optical Switching Using Photonic Molecules in Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Abstract:We study the coupling between photonic molecules and waveguides in photonic crystal slab structures using finite-difference time-domain method and coupled mode theory. In a photonic molecule with two cavities, the coupling of cavity modes results in two super-modes with symmetric and anti-symmetric field distributions. When two super-modes are excited simultaneously, the energy of electric field oscillates between the two cavities. To excite and probe the energy oscillation, we integrate photonic molecule with two photonic crystal waveguides. In coupled structure, we find that the quality factors of two super-modes might be different because of different field distributions of super-modes. After optimizing the radii of air holes between two cavities of photonic molecule, nearly equal quality factors of two super-modes are achieved, and coupling strengths between the waveguide modes and two super-modes are almost the same. In this case, complete energy oscillations between two cavities can be obtained with a pumping source in one waveguide, which can be read out by another waveguide. Finally, we demonstrate that the designed structure can be used for ultrafast optical switching with a time scale of a few picoseconds.
Versatile photonic molecule switch in multimode microresonators

Abstract:Abstract Harnessing optical supermode interaction to construct artificial photonic molecules has uncovered a series of fundamental optical phenomena analogous to atomic physics. Previously, the distinct energy levels and interactions in such two-level systems were provided by coupled microresonators. The reconfigurability is limited, as they often require delicate external field stimuli or mechanically altering the geometric factors. These highly specific approaches also limit potential applications. Here, we propose a versatile on-chip photonic molecule in a multimode microring, utilizing a flexible regulation methodology to dynamically control the existence and interaction strength of spatial modes. The transition between single/multi-mode states enables the “switched-off/on” functionality of the photonic molecule, supporting wider generalized applications scenarios. In particular, “switched-on” state shows flexible and multidimensional mode splitting control in aspects of both coupling strength and phase difference, equivalent to the a.c. and d.c. Stark effect. “Switched-off” state allows for perfect low-loss single-mode transition (Q i ~ 10 million) under an ultra-compact bend size (FSR ~ 115 GHz) in a foundry-based silicon microring. It breaks the stereotyped image of the FSR-Q factor trade-off, enabling ultra-wideband and high-resolution millimeter-wave photonic operations. Our demonstration provides a flexible and portable solution for the integrated photonic molecule system, extending its research scope from fundamental physics to real-world applications such as nonlinear optical signal processing and sixth-generation wireless communication.

Abstract:Hybrid microresonators have served an intriguing platform for fundamental research and applied photonics. Here, we study the plasmonics-engineered coupling between degenerate optical whispering gallery modes, which can be tuned in a complex space featuring the dissipative strong, dispersive strong, and weak coupling regimes. Experimentally, the engineering of a single plasmonic resonance to a cavity mode family is examined in a waveguide-integrated high-$Q$ microdisk, from which the complex coupling coefficients are extracted and agree well with theoretical predictions. The coupling strength over 10 GHz is achieved for both dissipative and dispersive interactions, showing a remarkable enhancement compared to that induced by a dielectric scatterer. Furthermore, the far fields of hybridized cavity modes are measured, revealing the coherent interference between the radiative channels. Our results shed light on the engineering of whispering gallery modes through plasmonic resonances, and provide fundamental guidance to practical microcavity devices.
