Abstract:Modal inspection of optical fibers is important for multimode application but it is challenging to collect in-situ information of propagating modes for evaluation and manipulation. Here we demonstrate direct observation of multimode interference in Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped micro/nanofibers. Luminescent interference patterns are visualized by visible up-conversion of Er3+ ions and are used for establishing the existence of higher order modes co-propagating with fundamental modes. We use fast Fourier transform to analyze the patterns in detail and obtain excellent agreement between experiment and calculation on beat lengths of the interference. Effective index differences among higher order modes and a fundamental mode of a microfiber are also experimentally investigated with the assistance of interference patterns, revealing the characteristic of modal dispersions.

Abstract:The effective manipulation of mode oscillation and competition is of fundamental importance for controlling light emission in semiconductor lasers. Here we develop a rate equation model which considers the spatially modulated gain and spontaneous emission, which are inherently governed by the ripple of the vacuum electromagnetic field in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) microcavity. By manipulating the interplay between the spatial oscillation of the vacuum field and external optical injection via dual-beam laser interference, single longitudinal mode operation is observed in a FP-type microcavity with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 40 dB. An exploration of this extended rate equation model bridges the gap between the classical model of multimode competition in semiconductor lasers and a quantum-optics understanding of radiative processes in microcavities.
Raman-Lasing Dynamics in Split-Mode Microresonators

Abstract:We study the dynamics of stimulated Raman scattering in high-Q split-mode microresonators. It is found that Raman lasing preferentially occurs in only one of the two competing split modes, and can therefore be beat-note free. Sweeping the pump wavelength causes the intracavity field pattern of the pump light to rotate, which makes the Raman laser hop between the two split modes. During these hops, both modes lase simultaneously, producing a beat note in the output Raman power. By studying this beat note, we demonstrate that the mode splitting is strongly affected by the Raman intensities in the two modes via the optical Kerr effect.

Abstract:Near-degenerate supermodes microlaser has drawn a lot of attention in the research of high-precision sensors, fundamental physic study, and the advanced light source. In the recent work on supermode microcacities, the experimentally observed beating phenomena of the stimulated Raman scattering, are regarded as the evidence of the dual-mode lasing. However, it theoretically contradicts the clamped pump filed guaranteed single-mode laser behavior of stimulated Raman scattering. In this work, the supermode stimulated Raman scattering has been studied in ultrahigh-Q whispering gallery microcavities. and it is the first time that its single-mode behavior is experimentally investigated due to the up to 37 dB side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR). In addition, the transient interference of the two supermode lasers switching is confirmed to cause the observed beating phenomena. Furthermore, this self-injection method can be adopted to adjust the lasing modes.

Abstract:Significance Microlasers in near-degenerate supermodes play a pivotal role for studies of non-Hermitian physics, novel light sources, and advanced sensors. However, the widely observed beating phenomena and the single-mode nature of the stimulated scattering have been generating the lasing characteristic dilemma. In this article, we experimentally elucidate the lasing spectral paradox by investigating the lasing dynamics of supermode Raman microlasers. The single-mode lasing behavior is confirmed, and the beating signal has been recognized as the transient interference during the lasing switching between the supermodes with the help of the self-injection technique. This work provides an insightful guidance for microlaser-based precision measurements and paves the way to reconfigurable light sources.

Abstract:A pair of counter-propagating high-Q whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) can couple to each other and produce two new modes with a significant resonance splitting when single or multi-Rayleigh scatterers are adsorbed on the microcavity surface. In this paper, we investigate the mode-splitting-based biosensing by using a biorecognition-covered WGM microcavity because the pre-covering is essentially necessary for label-free detection of specific biological targets. It is shown that the quantitative detection, e.g., nanoparticle sizing, is strongly affected by the biorecognition, and the minimum target size suitable for detection is subjected to the surface pre-covering ratio. To eliminate this degradation induced by biorecognition, we further propose to use the total linewidth broadening of the two new modes as the detection signal, which is immune to thermal fluctuation.

Abstract:As one type of disturbance or noise,random mode hopping of ultra-narrow line-width lasers is a significant factor that debases the performance of optical coherence detection system.In order to detect the mode stability characteristics of single-longitudinal-mode lasers with ultra-narrow line-width,a new method for detecting mode hopping based on fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer with externally modulated phase generated carrier(PGC) is proposed.It transforms the entire mode hopping process to the visibility change of interference waveform so as to achieve real-time observation.The experimental results show that this method has such high sensitivity that it can be used to capture the duration and the dynamic process of mode competition effectively,especially for lasers with short linear cavity.Besides,this method will play an important role in the prediction and active suppression of mode hopping in fiber lasers.
Tailoring Mode Splitting and Degeneracy in Silicon Triply Resonant Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We investigate the use of coupled silicon nanobeam cavities for achieving multiple resonances as a photonic dedicated platform for nonlinear signal processing and sensing. The transmission spectra of the triple-coupled cavities were measured, and high quality factors, up to about 80,000, have been experimentally reported. By precisely varying the positions of three cavities vertically and horizontally, evolutions of the supermodes were fully mapped, in good agreement with the simulation designs. Some specific and interesting properties such as the dark state of the system, leading to unique transmission spectra, have been clearly observed. Based on a geometrical control of the structure, the three resonances can be tuning independently, and degeneracy modes emerge in some configurations when the distance parameters are properly chosen. This triple-resonant device is expected to enable the adjustment of third-order nonlinear properties in silicon photonics, and it is also a candidate for sensing or reconfigurable and programmable photonics. Abstract:We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory. Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. Abstract:An optical whispering gallery mode（WGM） resonator supports degenerate counter-propagating modes and the degeneracy is lifted as mode splitting due to Rayleigh scattering. However, quantitative analysis becomes difficult if the resonance experiences weak scattering. Here we develop a spectroscopical method to identify an arbitrary small scatterer using the Fano interference-induced spectral response modification. Scattering information can be revealed by fitting the responses as a function of the field’s phase and intensity. In addition, we show that this modified response helps achieve an ultra-low detection limit for the mode-splitting-based nanoparticle detection method. This approach may be promising in the characterization of high-Q-factor devices, novel sensing methods, and quantum coupling system investigation.
Multiple Gas Detection Using V-cavity Coupled Diode Laser

Abstract:A multiple gas detection system based on a V-cavity coupled diode laser around 1550nm has been developed. The V-cavity coupled diode laser exhibits side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 40dB and digitally switching over 20nm. The absorption lines of CO, CO2 and H2S are separately around 1567.3nm, 1573nm, 1578nm, which are distributed over the tuning range of the diode laser. The technique of tunable diode laser absorption spectrum (TDLAS) is adopted in the gas detection for the advantage of high sensitivity and resolution. What's more, the systems based on direct absorption spectroscopy (DAS) and wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) are established to measure gas concentration. As a result, a linear relationship between detection signal and gas concentration is worked out and the R-square coefficient of the linear fitting is better than 0.99 for CO and CO2.

Abstract:We demonstrate a substantial enhancement of gas Raman scattering using a bidirectional multi-pass cavity CERS system, which incorporates a polarization beam-splitting optical path. The system design allows the laser light to traverse the multi-pass cavity for four specific trips, satisfying the need for quick detection of various gas components. Our gas detection experiments using multi-pass cavities with different times of reflection indicate that the addition of polarization beam-splitting optical path gives 1.5 to 1.68 times enhancement of Raman signal compared with that of the system without polarization beam-splitting. For the detection of CH4, a limit of detection of 1.66 ppm was achieved with our system using a multi-pass cell with 41 times of reflection and an integration time of 30s. Our proposed design, which integrates a bidirectional multi-pass cavity with polarization beam-splitting optical path, gives an economical multicomponent gas detection system and a valuable tool for guiding the design and precise alignment of these cavities. This system shows significant promise for applications in e.g. human breath and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:We report an investigation into secondary mode suppression in single longitudinal mode (SLM) 1240 nm diamond Raman lasers. For a three-mirror V-shape standing-wave cavity incorporating an intra-cavity LBO crystal to suppress secondary modes, we achieved stable SLM output with a maximum output power of 11.7 W and a slope efficiency 34.9%. We quantify the level of χ(2) coupling necessary to suppress secondary modes including those generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). It is found that SBS-generated modes often coincide with higher-order spatial modes in the beam profile and can be suppressed using an intracavity aperture. Using numerical calculations, it is shown that the probability for such higher-order spatial modes is higher for an apertureless V-cavity than in two-mirror cavities due its contrasting longitudinal mode-structure.

Abstract:Significance To date, loss compensation in optical microresonators has been done using rare-earth ions, which requires additional processing steps and costs and raises biocompatibility concerns. An alternative to integrating rare-earth ions for loss compensation is the use of intrinsic gain mechanisms such as Raman and parametric gain present in the materials from which resonators are fabricated. Here, we report the first implementation to our knowledge of Raman gain-induced loss compensation in silica whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators for improved detection and the first demonstration to our knowledge of mode splitting in a WGM Raman microlaser for detecting and counting single nanoparticles down to 10 nm. This intrinsically self-referenced, self-heterodyned, and biocompatible scheme has enabled achieving record-high polarizability sensitivity (down to 3.82 × 10 −6 μm 3 ) without using plasmonic effects, passive or active stabilization, or frequency locking.

Abstract:An experiment is conducted on using laser mode splitting technology to measure displacement. A laser longitudinal mode is split into two frequencies (modes) by the birefringence effect of an intracavity quartz crystal wedge. The magnitude variation of frequency splitting is proportional to the displacement of the wedge crossing the intracavity laser beam. The dependence of sensitivity and measurement range on the wedge angle and angle between crystalline axis and intracavity laser beam is studied. Abstract:Recently optical whispering-gallery-mode resonators (WGMRs) have emerged as promising platforms to achieve label-free detection of nanoscale objects and to reach single molecule sensitivity. The ultimate detection performance of WGMRs are limited by energy dissipation in the material they are fabricated from. Up to date, to improve detection limit, either rare-earth ions are doped into the WGMR to compensate losses or plasmonic resonances are exploited for their superior field confinement. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, enhanced detection of single-nanoparticle induced mode-splitting in a silica WGMR via Raman-gain assisted loss-compensation and WGM Raman lasing. Notably, we detected and counted individual dielectric nanoparticles down to a record low radius of 10 nm by monitoring a beatnote signal generated when split Raman lasing lines are heterodyne-mixed at a photodetector. This dopant-free scheme retains the inherited biocompatibility of silica, and could find widespread use for sensing in biological media. It also opens the possibility of using intrinsic Raman or parametric gain in other systems, where dissipation hinders the progress of the field and limits applications.

Frequency Splitting Phenomenon of Dual Transverse Modes in a Nd:YAG Laser

Abstract:We observed frequency splitting phenomenon of dual transverse modes (TEM00q and TEM01q) in a Nd:YAG microchip standing wave laser utilizing intracavity stress birefringence effects. Four resonance frequencies (ν00qe, ν00qo, ν01qe, and ν01qo, respectively) were produced and tuned by changing the diametral compression force applied on the laser crystal. The transverse mode frequency spacing for the same longitudinal mode number (Δνtrans) was 1.16GHz, and the magnitude of frequency splitting (Δν) ranged from 0MHz to 1.16GHz. Based on this phenomenon, a four-mode differential standing wave laser, whose signal characteristics were a little like those of a four-mode differential travelling wave laser gyro however with a much larger frequency splitting range, was produced. The theoretical analysis is in good agreement with the experimental results. This phenomenon not only can be used to make lasers with two or more frequency differences, but also can be used to make high-resolution self-sensing laser sensors (e.g. laser force sensors and laser accelerometers).
