Abstract:We experimentally investigated soliton rains in an ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) laser with a net normal dispersion cavity using a graphene-oxide (GO) saturable absorber (SA). The 195 m-long-cavity, the fiber birefringence filter and the inserted 2.5 nm narrow bandwidth filter play important roles in the formation of the soliton rains. The soliton rain states can be changed by the effective gain bandwidth of the laser. The experimental results can be conducive to an understanding of dissipative soliton features and mode-locking dynamics in all-normal dispersion fiber lasers with GOSAs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of soliton rains in a GOSA passively mode-locked YDF laser with a net normal dispersion cavity.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion multi-wavelength dissipative soliton Yb-doped fiber laser with a periodic birefringence fiber filter, for the first time to our best knowledge. Numerical simulations show that single-, dual-, and multi-wavelength dissipative solitons can be generated under appropriate filter bandwidth and saturation power. Under a certain filter bandwidth, the generated wavelength number of multi-wavelength mode-locked dissipative solitons is related to the saturation power, decreasing with increasing saturation power. The maximal and minimal attainable wavelength spacing of multi-wavelength dissipative solitons are also investigated, which are 21 nm and 4.6 nm, respectively, according to our simulations. Furthermore, the generation of multi-wavelength dissipative solitons has been verified by experiments. Dual- and three-wavelength dissipative solitons with a wavelength spacing of 16.4 nm have been achieved.

Abstract:We report the generation of tunable single- and dual-wavelength dissipative solitons in an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. Besides single-wavelength mode-locking, dual-wavelength mode-locking was achieved using an in-line birefringence fiber filter with periodic multiple passbands, which not only allows multiple wavelengths to oscillate simultaneously but also performs spectrum modulation on highly chirped dissipative pulse. Furthermore, taking advantage of the tunability of the birefringence fiber filter, wavelength tuning for both single- and dual-wavelength dissipative soliton mode-locking was realized. The dual-wavelength operation is also switchable. The all-fiber dissipative laser with flexible outputs can meet diverse application needs.

Abstract:Optical microfibers can show very strong normal dispersion (as high as 2700 ps2/km) around 2 μm, a highly desired feature for dispersion management in ultrafast lasers. Here we report a dissipative soliton fiber laser at 2 μm enabled by an optical microfiber. The full width at half-maximum of the optical spectrum was about 50 nm, and its flatness could be attributed to the third-order dispersion compensation provided by the optical microfiber. The pulse duration was measured to be 195 fs after a dechirping single-mode fiber. Our results suggest a new route to dissipative soliton fiber lasers at 2 μm, with a wide and flat spectrum and thus a short dechirped pulse.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:We demonstrate self-started unidirectional dissipative soliton operation and noise-like pulse operation in an all-normal-dispersion bidirectional Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation. The laser works unidirectional once mode locking was achieved due to the cavity directional nonlinearity asymmetry along with the nonlinear polarization rotation mode locking mechanism.

Abstract:A tunable dual-wavelength with two separated twin-pulse dissipative solitons (DSs) of Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) regime is firstly reported and demonstrated in this paper. A Sagnac loop is used as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, and stable twin-pulse DSs with different wavelength mode-locked lasers are achieved by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) effect. By adjusting the polarization state of the Sagnac loop, the spectral ranges of the dual-wavelength can be tuned from 1031.3 nm to 1041.5 nm and from 1067.1 nm to 1080.9 nm, respectively. However, the pulse space between the two separated twin-pulse DSs is maintained, i.e., 41.63 ns. Furthermore, the twin-pulse can regress to the single-pulse when the pump power keeps dropping. It has been observed that the highest energy of the two twin-pulse DSs output is 23.36 nJ at a repetition rate of 2.282 MHz with a maximum pump power of 560 mW.

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:We report on the generation of dual-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in a passively mode-locked figure-eight fiber laser operating in the net-normal dispersion regime. DSs with central wavelengths of 1572 and 1587 nm can be achieved simultaneously or respectively. The dual-wavelength DSs, traveling at different round-trip time, exhibit double-rectangular spectral profile. The intensities of two mode-locked spectra decrease or increase simultaneously after passing through a polarization beam splitter, indicating that the dual-wavelength DSs almost share the same polarization state. Experimental results demonstrated that dual-wavelength mode locking strongly depends on birefringence-induced filtering effect.

Abstract:Nonlinear dissipative systems support pulsating solutions and exhibit many interesting dynamic behaviors. Here, we report various soliton pulsations and explosions in an all-normal dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser by utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. By the different soliton dynamics, these phenomena can be classified into single-soliton pulsation and explosion, dual-soliton synchronous and asynchronous pulsation, as well as dual-soliton asynchronous explosion. Solitons exhibit identical periodic fluctuations in the synchronous pulsation while showing the anti-phase behavior in asynchronous pulsation. The dual-soliton asynchronous pulsation might be related to the periodic modulation of the polarization state of solitons. As for the dual-soliton asynchronous explosion, it can be regarded as the asynchronously triggered transient solitons containing periodic explosion through the gain-mediated soliton interactions. These findings may provide new insights into complex dynamics in the field of ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:The tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum dissipative soliton (DS) is demonstrated in Yb-doped mode-locked laser using an all-fiber structure saturable absorber (SA), that is, graded index multimode fiber (GIMF)-step index multimode fiber (SIMF)-GIMF with 4.70% modulation depth and 4.55 mW saturation power. Increasing pump power alters intra-cavity balance between loss and gain and nonlinear and dispersion, causing wavelength adjustment and spectrum broadening. The center wavelength shifts towards shorter wavelength with rang of 1037.77-1024.83 nm, corresponding 3-dB bandwidth widens from 6.10 to 9.23 nm and pulse width narrows from 23.80 to 13.38 ps. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 71.2 dB at the repetition rate of 14.63 MHz. The GIMFSIMF-GIMF structure has a huge potential to serve as both SA and filter component for the tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL), which is favorable for developing the field of nonlinear microscopy and material processing.

Abstract:Passively mode locked fiber lasers are excellent platforms for soliton generation. Here, multi-state switchable behaviors in a slightly normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser are experimentally demonstrated with an identical configuration. A saturable absorber based on single-wall carbon nanotube is served as mode-locking device and an intrinsic birefringence spectral filtering is employed as a tunable inline filter. Consequently, with properly modifying pumping powers and orientations of polarization controller paddles, the operation regimes of the proposed laser could be reversibly switched between dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons, and the characteristics of intermediate states are recorded. Tunable dissipative solitons with a tuning range of 38 nm and noise-like pulses could also alternatively be generated. This multi-state behavior switching could be attributed to the strong filtering caused by the limited gain bandwidth under strong pump strength. The experimental observations of these multi-state switchable transitions may offer insight into the pulse regime dynamics in the near-zero dispersion region and offer flexibility in multi-functional designs of the laser configuration, which would enable innovations in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the experimental investigation and theoretical analysis on the soliton rain generated in the Tm-doped fiber laser have been carried out. On the basis of nonlinear polarization rotation technology, the fundamental and harmonic soliton rain pulses were obtained, the influence of net negative dispersion cavity length on the output performances of soliton rain pulse were studied, and the spectral sideband characteristics of soliton rain were numerically analyzed. By comparing the spectra of continuous wave mode-locking and soliton rain states, it can be found that the quasi-periodic modulation exists for the spectral sideband of soliton rain resulted from the complex interaction between the dispersive wave and the soliton wave. The interaction is one of the major factors for the formation of soliton rain. The research results are helpful for the better understanding of the soliton rain dynamics and mechanism in passive mode-locked fiber lasers.</p>

Abstract:We report on the long-cavity ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) to control the dispersion in the cavity. The proposed fiber lasers operating in large anomalous dispersion and large normal dispersion are intensively studied in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time for us to give the dispersion map over such a wide range. The experimental results show that, for large anomalous dispersion, the state of soliton rains can be obtained. Nanosecond pulse is obtained in the large normal dispersion regime with spectral filter which is different from the operation mode without spectral filter. This study may pave the way to best apply the fiber laser in many fields.
