Abstract:We demonstrate that by using a cascaded configuration of five solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) samples with progressively decreasing core diameters, ultraviolet light with wavelengths as short as ∼300 nm can be generated in a supercontinuum (SC) set-up. With a nanosecond laser as the pump light, the modulation instability effect leads to the generation of multiple optical solitons in the first PCF sample which has a close-to-zero dispersion value at the pump wavelength (∼1064 nm). The following PCF samples with decreasing core diameters enhance the waveguide nonlinearity, and at the same time provide continuously-shorter phase-matching wavelengths for dispersive-wave emission, thereby pushing the short-wavelength edge of the SC spectrum into the deep ultraviolet spectral region. While the PCF splicing technique ensures the compactness of this SC set-up, the generated SC spectrum, spanning ∼350 nm to ∼2000 nm with a flat spectral profile, may be applied in fluorescence microscopy and biochemical imaging.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of supercontinuum generation in a highly non-linear photonic crystal fibre with a zero-dispersion wavelength of 780 nm pumped by femtosecond pulses from a Ti: sapphire mode-locked laser. Supercontinuum light with a spectrum ranging from 500 to 1100 nm has been generated in the photonic crystal fibre with an average core radius of 1.8 mu m. Those optical pulses have a duration of 35 fs, a repetition rate of 350 MHz and an average power of 360 mW. Moreover, different supercontinuum can be generated by changing the input power and the polarisation direction.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:We report on the generation of a three-octave-wide supercontinuum extending from the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to the near-infrared, spanning at least 113 to 1000 nm (i.e., 11 to 1.2 eV), in He-filled hollow-core kagome-style photonic crystal fiber. Numerical simulations confirm that the main mechanism is a novel and previously undiscovered interaction between dispersive-wave emission and plasma-induced blueshifted soliton recompression around the fiber zero dispersion frequency. The VUV part of the supercontinuum, which modeling shows to be coherent and possess a simple phase structure, has sufficient bandwidth to support single-cycle pulses of 500 attosecond duration. We also demonstrate, in the same system, the generation of narrower-band VUV pulses, through dispersive-wave emission, tunable from 120 to 200 nm with efficiencies exceeding 1% and VUV pulse energies in excess of 50 nJ.

Abstract:Formating mechanism of supercontinuum generation in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is studied. Using nonlinear polarization rotation technique, a stable femtosecond optical pulse with the central wavelength of 1556.0 nm as pumping source is obtained, and by delivering this pulse into a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, a supercontinuum with the 20 dB bandwith about the 140 nm has been obtained in experiment; Supercontinuum generation in different pump power was experimentally and numerically investigated. It is shown that supercontinuum has the different formatting mechanism with different pump power, and under various nonlinear effects, the more higher of the pump power; the more wide of the supercontinuum. It is found that qualitative agreement between the experiments and the simulations, the simulations shows that it exists an optimal fiber length for generation of the flat, broad supercontinuum. The SC band bandwidth will became smoother and broader by the frequency chirp.

Abstract:Abstract Supercontinuum (SC) light sources hold versatile applications in many fields ranging from imaging microscopic structural dynamics to achieving frequency comb metrology. Although such broadband light sources are readily accessible in the visible and near infrared regime, the ultraviolet (UV) extension of SC spectrum is still challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the joint contribution of strong field ionization and quantum resonance leads to the unexpected UV continuum radiation spanning the 100 nm bandwidth in molecular nitrogen ions. Quantum coherences in a bunch of ionic levels are found to be created by dynamic Stark-assisted multiphoton resonances following tunneling ionization. We show that the dynamical evolution of the coherence-enhanced polarization wave gives rise to laser-assisted continuum emission inside the laser field and free-induction decay after the laser field, which jointly contribute to the SC generation together with fifth harmonics. As proof of principle, we also show the application of the SC radiation in the absorption spectroscopy. This work offers an alternative scheme for constructing exotic SC sources, and opens up the territory of ionic quantum optics in the strong-field regime.

Abstract:An ultrabroadband supercontinuum (SC) is demonstrated in a pure silica photonic crystal fiber (PCF) pumped by quasi-continuous wave nanosecond-long pulses at 1,064 nm. The generated SC spectra extending from 450 to at least 2,400 nm have the salient feature of a short wavelength regime below the pump wavelength, which is much higher in intensity than the long-wavelength over the pump wavelength. The influence of pump power and repetition rates on SC generation (SCG) is explored. Results suggest that this pump source has both the advantages of short-pulse and continuous-wave pumps for SCG.

Abstract:Silica-based photonic crystal fibre has proven highly successful for supercontinuum generation, with smooth and flat spectral power densities. However, fused silica glass suffers from strong material absorption in the mid-infrared (>2,500 nm), as well as ultraviolet-related optical damage (solarization), which limits performance and lifetime in the ultraviolet (<380 nm). Supercontinuum generation in silica photonic crystal fibre is therefore only possible between these limits. A number of alternative glasses have been used to extend the mid-infrared performance, including chalcogenides, fluorides and heavy-metal oxides, but none has extended the ultraviolet performance. Here, we describe the successful fabrication (using the stack-and-draw technique) of a ZBLAN photonic crystal fibre with a high air-filling fraction, a small solid core, nanoscale features and near-perfect structure. We also report its use in the generation of ultrabroadband, long-term stable, supercontinua spanning more than three octaves in the spectral range 200–2,500 nm.

Abstract:Ultrafast broadband ultraviolet radiation is of importance in spectroscopy and photochemistry, since high photon energies enable single-photon excitations and ultrashort pulses allow time-resolved studies. Here we report the use of gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) for efficient ultrafast nonlinear optics in the ultraviolet. Soliton self-compression of 400 nm pulses of (unprecedentedly low) ~500 nJ energies down to sub-6-fs durations is achieved, as well as resonant emission of tunable dispersive waves from these solitons. In addition, we discuss the generation of a flat supercontinuum extending from the deep ultraviolet to the visible in a hydrogen-filled HC-PCF. Comparisons with argon-filled fibers show that the enhanced Raman gain at high frequencies makes the hydrogen system more efficient. As HC-PCF technology develops, we expect these fiber-based ultraviolet sources to lead to new applications.
[Study on the Supercontinuum Generation with Femtosecond Pulse in Photonic Crystal Fiber].

Abstract:Physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber by femtosecond laser pulse has been investigated experimentally. In this study, we used the tunable output wavelength Ti: sapphire optical parametric amplifier as the pump source and the fiber spectrometer acquired the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber under different power and wavelength conditions, then we normalized the spectrograms and make a comparison of them. PCF supercontinuum differences affected by physical mechanisms were analyzed. We found that when increasing the incident pump pulse power, the spectral width will be gradually widened, there are more peaks, part of the energy will transfer in to the short-wave- length region; as long as it reaches a certain intensity, width of supercontinuum finally saturated, the shape of supercontinuum was also stabilized. As the incident power was settled at 300 milliwatt and the length of PCF was settled at 105 millimeter, experimental results show that width and shape of supercontinuum are affected by the wavelength of pump pulse, in the range of 760 to 840 nm, there appears more and more peaks with the increase of incident wavelength; at anomalous dispersion the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation will be more flat and more wider as the wavelength of pump pulse closer to zero point.

Abstract:We present the use of linearly down-tapered gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber in a single-stage, pumped with pulses from a compact infrared laser source, to generate a supercontinuum carrying significant spectral power in the deep ultraviolet (200 - 300 nm). The generated supercontinuum extends from the near infrared down to around 213 nm with up to 0.83 mW/nm in the deep ultraviolet.

Abstract:In this paper, ultra-broad band optical signal amplification are analyzed and demonstrated by utilizing supercontinuum generation propagating over the photonic crystal fiber. The coupled nonlinear Schroodinger equation containing parametric process and stimulated Raman scattering effect was analyzed and solved to calculate the variation of signal gain with frequency. The dependence of the gain spectra on nonlinear and chromatic dispersion coefficients as well as the geometrical parameters of photonic crystal fiber are discussed. The results show that when using a pump at wavelength 1450nm and peak power 1600W, the gain spectra covers from 1300 to 1700nm with the peak gain 100dB. This amplification mechanism have potential in full-wave optical fiber communication.

Abstract:Ultrabroadband generation of white-light continuum spanning from ultraviolet to near-infrared (375–920 nm) is demonstrated by using induced-phase modulation between two-color femtosecond pulses in multiple thin plates. The fundamental wave and its second-harmonic wave from one Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplifier are injected into nine 100 <i>μ</i>m-thick fused silica plates. When the two pulses are temporally and spatially optimized in the plates, an intense supercontinuum is efficiently achieved by utilizing self-phase modulation and self-steepening together with induced-phase modulation. As a result, using 1 kHz, 1 mJ, and 35 fs pulses at 800 nm as the pump, we demonstrate the generation of 0.6 mJ white-light pulses with an ultra-broad bandwidth supporting 1.6 fs transform-limited pulses corresponding to 0.6-optical-cycle at a central wavelength of 750 nm. Analysis of the calculated spectrum fits the experimental results well, and the pulse is quasi-linearly chirped and compressible. The resulting intense robust supercontinuum could be a promising light source for an ever greater degree of tailored optical waveform coherent control in new parameter spaces.

Abstract:The generation of a two-octave supercontinuum from the visible to mid-infrared (700 - 2800 nm) in a non-silica graded-index multimode fiber is reported. The fiber design is based on a nanostructured core comprised of two types of drawn lead-bismuth-gallate glass rods with different refractive indices. This structure yields an effective parabolic index profile, an extended transmission window, and ten times increased nonlinearity when compared to silica fibers. Using femtosecond pulse pumping at wavelengths in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes, a detailed study is carried out into the supercontinuum generating mechanisms and instabilities seeded by periodic self imaging. Significantly, suitable injection conditions in the high power regime are found to result in the output beam profile showing clear signatures of beam self-cleaning from nonlinear mode mixing. Experimental observations are interpreted using spatio-temporal 3+1D numerical simulations of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and simulated spectra are in excellent agreement with experiment over the full two-octave spectral bandwidth. These results demonstrate a new pathway towards the generation of bright, ultrabroadband light sources in the mid-infrared.

Abstract:We propose an efficient method to generate an ultra-broadband supercontinuum by using a three-color field synthesized by a 1600 nm driving pulse and two weak (3200 nm and 400 nm) control pulses. The results show that the acceleration and ionization steps in the HHG process are simultaneously controlled in our scheme, which can not only broaden the bandwidth but also enhance the harmonic yields of the generated spectrum. Thus a high-efficiency supercontinuum with the photon energies ranging from 205 eV to 480 eV is observed. Based on our 3D propagation simulations, we show that the short quantum path of the supercontinuum is well phase-matched and can be selected under suitable propagation conditions. Thereby, the modulation due to quantum path interference is largely reduced and intense isolated sub-100 as pulses with tunable central wavelengths are directly obtained within water window spectral region.

Abstract:Simulations are presented of a very broad and flat supercontinuum (SC) in both the normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion regimes of the same equiangular spiral photonic crystal fiber at low pumping powers. For a pump wavelength at 1557 nm and average pump power of 11.2 mW, we obtained a bandwidth >3 μm (970 nm–4100 nm) at 40 dB below the peak spectral power with fiber dispersion ∼2.1 ps/km nm at 1557 nm. In the same fiber, at pump wavelength 1930 nm and average pump power of 12 mW the SC bandwidth was more than two octaves (1300 nm–3700 nm) and dispersion was ∼1.3 ps/km nm at 1930 nm. This demonstrates the potential use of the fiber for multi-wavelength pumping with commercially available sources at fairly low power.

Abstract:Ultraviolet frequency combs enable applications ranging from precision spectroscopy to atomic clocks by addressing the electronic transitions of atoms and molecules. Access to ultraviolet light via integrated nonlinear optics is usually hampered by the strong material dispersion and large waveguide attention in the ultraviolet region. Here we demonstrate a simple route to chip-scale ultraviolet comb generators, simultaneously showing a gap-free frequency span of ~128 terahertz and supercontinuum sourced by an ultrafast fiber laser. The simultaneous cubic and quadratic nonlinear processes are implemented in single-crystalline aluminum nitride thin films, where a chirp-modulated taper waveguide is patterned to ensure a broad phase matching. The heterodyne beatnote characterization suggests that both the near-visible and ultraviolet supercontinuum combs maintain a high degree of coherence. Our approach is also adaptable to other non-centrosymmetric photonic platforms for ultrafast nonlinear optics with scalable bandwidth.
