Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optical envelope detection of 40 Mbaud 16‐QAM and QPSK RF modulated signals. The proposed system employs an electro‐absorption modulator performing the function of an optical halfwave rectifier. In this experiment, the QAM and QPSK signals are frequency down converted from a 1.6 GHz carrier frequency to an IF at 500 MHz, requiring no high frequency local oscillator and mixer at the remote base station. This result proves the feasibility of optical envelope detection for complex modulation formats of RF signals for hybrid wireless‐fiber transmission links. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A novel scheme for photonic vector signal generation based on a self-starting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and optical coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical output sidebands of the OEO are employed for optical heterodyne mixing, where one first-order sideband is modulated by QPSK baseband data using a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator, followed by coherent detection so as to directly generate frequency-doubled K-band vector signals. In the experiment, a 19.9 GHz QPSK modulated vector signal with a bit rate of 100 Mb/s is generated when the OEO operates at 9.95 GHz. The generated signal is back demodulated with error vector magnitude (EVM) less than 7%.

Abstract:This letter demonstrates the feasibility of a novel direct detection microwave photonic vector modulation scheme for the radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. Unlike the traditional double-sideband with optical carrier suppression modulation scheme, which can carry only the on-off keying data format, the proposed scheme encodes the electrical vector signal on either the upper sideband (USB) or the lower sideband (LSB) only and a pure optical subcarrier on the other sideband. Therefore, phase and amplitude information will be preserved after direct detection. A frequency doubling scheme is employed to reduce the cost of RoF systems. Additionally, the relative intensity between USB and LSB can be easily tuned by adjusting the individual power of electrical driving signals to optimize the performance of the optical radio-frequency signals. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted by using a 1.25 Gb/s BPSK signal at a carrier frequency of 20 GHz. After transmission over 50-km single-mode fiber, the receiver sensitivity penalty is less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:We proposed single-sideband (SSB) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) vector radio-frequency optical signal generation enabled by a single directly modulated laser without precoding technology, which can reduce the system cost and tolerate fiber dispersion. Based on our proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrated 8-Gbaud SSB QPSK signals generation at 10 GHz, and the generated signals are transmitted over 50-km single-mode fiber without power penalty. Our experimental results show that an equal power SSB signal can tolerate fiber dispersion and have the highest receiver sensitivity. Abstract:We propose a photonic-aided dual-vector radio-frequency (RF) signal generation and detection scheme enabled by bandpass delta-sigma modulation and heterodyne detection. With the aid of the bandpass delta-sigma modulation, our proposed scheme is transparent to the modulation format of the dual-vector RF signals and can support the generation, wireless transmission, and detection of both single-carrier (SC) and orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) vector RF signals with high-level quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) modulation. With the aid of the heterodyne detection, our proposed scheme can support up to W-band (75–110 GHz) dual-vector RF signal generation and detection. For the validation of our proposed scheme, we experimentally demonstrate the simultaneous generation of a SC-64QAM signal at 94.5 GHz and a SC-128QAM signal at 93.5 GHz and their error-free high-fidelity transmission over a 20-km single-mode fiber 28 (SMF-28) and a 1-m single-input single-output (SISO) wireless link at the W-band. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that delta-sigma modulation has been introduced into a W-band photonic-aided fiber-wireless integration system to achieve flexible and high-fidelity dual-vector RF signal generation and detection.

Abstract:A novel D-band vector signal generation and transmission scheme by using joint optical carrier suppression (OCS) and single sideband (SSB) modulation without a narrowband optical filter to remove the undesired optical sidebands is proposed and implemented. An intensity modulator operating on OCS mode is utilized to generate two carrier signals with a frequency spacing of 165.6-GHz. A lower sideband modulated RF vector signal at 20-GHz is used to modulate the push–pull modulator which working on OCS mode. Finally, two electrical millimeter vector signals with frequency 145.6-GHz and 185.6-GHz were generated by heterodyne beating on a photodetector. We experimentally demonstrated 2-Gbaud 16QAM, 4-Gbaud QPSK, and 10-Gbaud QPSK vector signals generation and transmission over 20 km standard single mode fiber and 1 m wireless link, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, a novel photonic vector signal at frequency (RF) bands generation scheme based on the beating of double single sidebands (SSBs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The double SSBs carry separate constant-or multi-amplitude quadrature-amplitude-modulation vector signals are generated from a single I/Q modulator. By adopting phase and amplitude precoding, different constellations can be generated, such as 3-ary phase-shift keying (PSK), 4-PSK, 7-PSK, 8-PSK, and so on. In this work, 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signal generation at 20 GHz enabled by two precoded 4-PSK SSB signals via a single I/Q modulator is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Compared to a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator or conventional I/Q modulator-based photonic vector signal generation scheme, the spectrum efficiency can be doubled. Differential coding is also implemented at the transmitter side for accurate demodulation of 7-PSK into two 4-PSK signals. The bit-error ratio for 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signals can be under hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after 10 km standard single-mode fiber transmission. Abstract:A novel vector signal transmission scheme through double-sideband carrier-suppressed (DSB-CS) radio-over-fiber system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Traditionally, the single-stage DSB-CS optical millimeter (mm)-wave generation scheme could not deliver a vector signal due to the loss of phase information at the receiver. However, we found that by simply adding dc offset to the transmitting vector signal, the desired signal after beating at the receiver can be preserved and enhanced without introducing any hardware complexity to existing systems. A feasibility demonstration of transmitting a 200-Mb/s quadrature phase-shift-keying orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (QPSK-OFDM) signal on 60-GHz optical mm-wave over 10-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) has been successfully completed with a demodulated error vector magnitude (EVM) less than 5.52% in our experiment. In addition, the value of the required dc offset and its impact to the system performance is also experimentally investigated.

Abstract:An approach to transmitting two independent microwave vector signals on a single optical carrier with one polarization state based on coherent detection and digital phase noise cancellation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. At the transmitter, two independent microwave vector signals are modulated on an optical carrier via a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM). The modulated optical signals are transmitted over a single-mode fiber (SMF) and sent to a coherent receiver. At the receiver, the optical signals are detected where a local oscillator (LO) optical wave generated by a second free-running laser source is also applied. To recover the two microwave vector signals, a novel digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm is developed and applied to eliminate the joint phase noise terms from the transmitter and the LO laser sources as well as the unstable offset frequency between the two laser sources. An experiment is performed. The transmission of two independent 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) microwave vector signals at 4 GHz with a symbol rate of 1 GSymbs over a 9-km SMF is demonstrated. The transmission performance in terms of error vector magnitudes (EVMs) and bit error rates (BERs) is also evaluated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple method to generate and detect high speed polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16QAM) vector signal enabled by Mach–Zehnder modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. Due to the adoption of OCS intensity modulation, carrier beating can be avoided at the receiver, and thus polarization de-multiplexing can be implemented by digital-signal-processing-based (DSP-based) cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) equalization instead of a polarization tracking system. The change of both amplitude and phase information due to the adoption of OCS modulation can be equalized by DSP-based amplitude and phase precoding at the transmitter. Up to 64-Gb/s PDM-16QAM vector signal is generated and detected after 2-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) or 20-km large-effective-area fiber (LEAF) transmission with a bit-error-ratio (BER) less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:A vector system that uses a single laser source and a dual-polarized Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to generate two channels of optical radio frequency signals at different frequencies is experimentally studied. Using the optical subcarrier multiplexing technology, two channels of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals can be carried by two optical subcarriers with different frequencies based on a modulator and an optical carrier. The polarization multiplexing technology is used to overcome crosstalk of optical signals with different frequencies, and the signals can be successfully transmitted over an 80-km-long single-mode fiber (SMF). In the experiment, 15- and 30-GHz QPSK signals arc modulated using a dual-polarized MZM based on a single sideband modulation format. After the 80-km SMF transmission, the 15-GHz QPSK signal transmission performance is better than that of the 30-GHz signal. When the input power of a photodetector (PD) is more than-10.2 dBm, the bit error rate (BER) of a system after demodulation is less than 3.8 X 10(-3). The system has the advantages of simple structure, low complexity, and few electrical and optical devices, which effectively reduce cost and play a considerable role in the development of future access networks.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate how to generate photonic eight quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) vector signal by using only one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). Because of the ‘square-law’ characteristic of the photodetector (PD), the amplitudes and the phase of the driving radio-frequency (RF) signal are changed after detection. The pre-coding for the amplitudes and the phase of the driving radio-frequency (RF) signal before they drive the MZM will take the advantages of restoring the driving precoding signal to regular signal after PD. The transmission performance with different date rates at 1, 2, and 3-Gbaud over single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission is experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratios (BERs) of the transmission system are less than the forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a multisideband detection (MSD) radio-over-fiber (RoF) link with optical phase modulation ( PM) and fiber demodulation to transmit vector signals. In the scheme, the optical PM signal is demodulated by the fiber dispersion. The fading effect can be almost entirely overcome thanks to the MSD. In case of 50-Msymbols/s vector signal with frequencies of subcarrier ranging from 2 to 12 GHz over 25-, 50-, and 100-km single-mode fibers, respectively, the RoF-link's error vector magnitude of better than 4.5% and spurious-free dynamic range of more than 97 dB Hz(2/3) are obtained experimentally.

Abstract:This investigation presents a novel modulation approach for generating optical vector signals using frequency multiplication based on double sideband with carrier suppression. A single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator is biased at null point with a driving signal consisting of a 10-GHz sinusoidal signal and a 5-GHz sinusoidal signal modulated with 1.25-Gb/s on-off keying, 1.25-Gb/s binary phase-shift keying data, or 625-MSym/s quadruple phase-shift keying data. After square-law photodetection, a 1.25-Gb/s radio-frequency signal at a sum frequency of 15 GHz is generated. After transmission over 50-km single-mode fiber, the power penalty of all three modulation formats is under 0.2 dB.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel and simple photonic vector signal generation scheme at radio frequency bands enabled by a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator-based optical carrier suppression without precoding techniques and optical filter, which can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The generation and reception of 16/20/22-Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying vector signals at 16/20/22 GHz are experimentally demonstrated, respectively. The measured bit-error ratio for 16 G-baud QPSK vector signals after transmitting over 10-km standard single mode fiber can be under 7% hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Moreover, compared to the conventional precoding scheme, the receiver sensitivity can be enhanced by 4 dB at both back-to-back and after 10-km SSMF transmission cases, which demonstrates the feasibility of this proposal, and show its potential promising application in radio over fiber system.
