Abstract:Although previous studies discovered physiological signals under different emotions, the differences of physiological signals between normal driving and angry driving are generally unknown. Furthermore, motorists from different countries may have different physiology because of their different custom, lifestyle, and culture. In this regard, it is believed that traffic/road environment and driving behaviors in China are very different from those of the developed countries. A study of the Chinese driver’s physiological signals under angry driving is helpful for understanding the impact of driving anger on traffic safety in a country where “road rage” is common. Nine college students were recruited as drivers and participated in the following two experiments. In the first experiment, the physiological data (blood volume pulse, skin conductance, finger temperature, and respiration amplitude) of the nine respondents were captured using BioGraph Infiniti instrument when conducting experiments under the normal driving condition within a driving simulator. Then the respondents were asked to watch the angry induction videos in the second experiment, and the same physiological data were captured simultaneously. The respondents also self-reported the level of their anger in the second experiments. Study results indicate that the differences of physiological signals between the two experiments are significant. It is found that the summary statistics, including the minimum, the maximum, range, kurtosis, and skewness for the physiological signals collected from the two experiments show significant differences. In addition, eleven statistics characteristics for physiological signals are obtained by a principal component analysis. In general, the study results show that angry driving tends to have greater changes in physiological signals during a span than normal driving.
