Abstract:Routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) is an important problem in elastic optical networks (EONs). With the increase of network scale and task requests, the imbalance of the network topology becomes more and more prominent, causing congestion of some links in the network and even paralysation of the entire network. To tackle this issue, in this paper, we first set up an integer linear programming model for RSA problems in EONs, which minimises the number of used slots, optimises the balance of networks and the burden of KeyLinks (i.e., the links which are easy blocked when large requests comes). Then we design a new routing scheme called dynamically adjusted shortest hop count and minimum rank value first (DSHMRF) to select the candidate routes for each request. Moreover, we propose a new genetic algorithm called direction and distance-based genetic algorithm (DDGA) to look for optimal routes for all requests among the candidate routes. To allocate the spectrum reasonably, we adopt first fit (FF) scheme. Finally, the experiments are conducted on several network topologies of different scales with different request sets and the results indicate that the proposed model is effective and the proposed genetic algorithm is efficient.

Abstract:Empowered by multirate transmission and bandwidth-variable switching technology, elastic optical networks (EONs) enhance spectrum utilization efficiency and increase network capacity to satisfy the rapid growth of Internet traffic. Routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) is one of the key elements in realizing EONs. However, previous RSA schemes with superior performance have had the drawback of high computational complexity. In this work, we focus on achieving superior RSA performance with reduced computational complexity. We first propose a dynamic network resource evaluation method that takes into account both the distribution of traffic bandwidth and the spectrum blocks' carrying capability. Based on this, we introduce traffic-based fragmentation-aware concepts into the RSA steps. In the routing step, we propose a low-complexity fragmentation-aware load-balanced shortest path routing scheme and a modified fragmentation-aware load-balanced k-shortest-path routing scheme. In the spectrum allocation step, we propose an efficient traffic-based fragmentation-aware spectrum allocation scheme. Simulation results prove that the proposed RSA schemes can reduce the computational complexity significantly and provide network accommodation that is comparable to and traffic blocking probability that is similar to existing dynamic RSA schemes.

Abstract:Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) is the fundamental problem in Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), which is an \(\mathcal{N}\mathcal{P}\)-complete problem. In this paper, we compare the performances of two typical RSA algorithms namely Spectrum-First and Route-First, and put forward a connection between the performances and the request distributions. The numerical results demonstrated that even though the Spectrum-First RSA algorithm outperforms significantly the Route-First RSA algorithm under concentrated distribution, the latter performs pretty better under uniform distribution, which is however somewhat different from that demonstrated in the literature.

Abstract:With flexibility in optical layer, elastic optical network (EON) has been considered as a competitive candidate to architect next-generation backbone networks. Routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) is a key problem for the service provisioning in EONs. The RSA problem is NP-hard even in elastic optical rings. Numerous heuristics have been proposed, and they can generally be categorized into two types: Route-First (RF) and Spectrum-First (SF). Although most previous work demonstrated by numerical simulations that the SF algorithms always outperform the RF ones, there is a lack of theoretical analysis on the reasons causing the performance difference between the two types of RSA algorithms. In this paper, we aim at proposing a unified theoretical framework for the performance analysis of RSA algorithms by leveraging conflict graphs, which offers a new perception on the optimality of RSA algorithms. To validate the proposed framework, we apply it in elastic optical rings (with cycle topology), and theoretically analyze the number of edges of the conflict graphs for RF and SF algorithms. Different from the literature, we obtain an interesting observation that neither the RF nor the SF can surpass the other in elastic optical rings under different traffic distributions, and their performances have a strong correlation to the edge count of their conflict graph. This observation provides a new perspective, i.e., conflict graph, to explore the property of RSA algorithms.

Abstract:High spectrum efficiency and flexibility are the advantages of elastic optical network, which is the future direction of optical network development. Routing and resource allocation is one of the core technologies of flexible optical networks. This paper propose an improved RSA algorithm in the elastic optical network which based on OSNR impairment model. It considers both QoT (quality of transmission) and available spectrum resources of the network in routing selection and spectrum allocation. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that compared with the traditional RSA algorithm, the proposed algorithm can improve the transmission efficiency and quality, and reduce the traffic blocking rate.

Abstract:In recent years, the concept of the elastic optical network (EON) was proposed and very quickly became an attractive solution for flexible channel bandwidth utilization. Analogous to the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in traditional wavelength-routed networks, routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) is the most basic and critical resource management issue in EONs. In this work, we exploit and modify the layered graph model, which is a well-known RWA model, to design two RSA heuristic algorithms named LG-FF and LG-SP. Additionally, we also derive an analytical model to estimate the number of required layered graphs. Numerical results demonstrate that LG-SP can achieve the same blocking performance level with significant time complexity reduction as compared to the near-optimal solution. Whether we care about blocking performance or aim at saving computational time, the layered graph is an important representation model of resource utilization status to efficiently solve the RSA problem.

Abstract:The poor timeliness of routing has always been an urgent problem in practical operator networks, especially in situations with large-scale networks and multiple network domains. In this article, a pruning idea of routing integrated with Dijkstra's shortest path searching is utilized to accelerate the process of routing in large-scale multi-domain elastic optical networks (EONs). The layered-graph approach is adopted in the spectrum allocation stage. To this end, an efficient heuristic algorithm is proposed, called "Branch-and-Bound based Routing and Layered Graph based Spectrum Allocation algorithm (BBR-LGSA)", which is an integrated RSA algorithm. Notably, the significant reduction in algorithm time complexity is not only reflected in the pruning method used in the routing stage but also in the construction of auxiliary graphs during the spectrum allocation stage utilizing the Branch-and-Bound method. Simulation results show that the proposed BBR-LGSA significantly reduces the average running time by nearly 78% with higher spectrum utilization in large-scale multi-domain EONs, compared with benchmark algorithms. In addition, the impact of key parameters on performance comparisons of different algorithms is evaluated.

Abstract:We focus on the dynamic Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) problem in EONs with mixed line rates. To solve the dynamic RSA problem efficiently, we decompose the problem into routing and spectrum allocation sub-problems. For the routing sub-problem, we propose an efficient multi-constrained routing algorithm, Sorted Feasible Paths Searching (SFPS), to find the shortest feasible paths for the dynamic traffic demands. For the spectrum allocation sub-problem, we propose a spectrum allocation strategy named Adaptive Segmentation (AS) to allocate spectrum for the non-commensurate traffic demands of EONs with mixed line rates. Simulation results prove that the proposed dynamic RSA algorithm is time-efficient and perform better than existing dynamic RSA algorithms in terms of bandwidth blocking probability and spectrum fragmentation ratio.

Abstract:Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) increase the transport capacity of standard optical networks, and have been proposed as a short-term solution to satisfy the dynamic demands of service quality requirements. To this end, the development of algorithms to better facilitate Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) is envisaged to have a critical impact on the performance of EON. Given the abundance of RSA algorithms, this study presents the unique challenge of organizing and classifying them meaningfully to understand and select the most suitable approach for the corresponding niche service quality requirements. This study proposes a novel taxonomy structure for grouping RSA algorithms based on the following criteria: (1) resource assignment policies, (2) flexibility type, (3) traffic type, (4) optimization approaches, (5) number of objective functions, and (6) problem separability. Finally, the contributions of this study are twofold: it presents a state-of-the-art taxonomy framework that organizes existing published works based on a set of predetermined criteria, and explores research opportunities involving RSA algorithms to realize the full potential of EONs in telecommunications.

Abstract:The elastic optical network (EON) is a promising new optical technology that uses spectrum resources much more efficiently than does traditional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). This paper focuses on the routing, modulation level, spectrum and transceiver allocation (RMSTA) problems of the EON. In contrast to previous works that consider only the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) or routing, modulation level and spectrum allocation (RMSA) problems, we additionally consider the transceiver allocation problem. Because transceivers can be used to regenerate signals (by connecting two transceivers back-to-back) along a transmission path, different regeneration sites on a transmission path result in different spectrum and transceiver usage. Thus, the RMSTA problem is both more complex and more challenging than are the RSA and RMSA problems. To address this problem, we first propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model whose objective is to optimize the balance between spectrum usage and transceiver usage by tuning a weighting coefficient to minimize the cost of network operations. Then, we propose a novel virtual network-based heuristic algorithm to solve the problem and present the results of experiments on representative network topologies. The results verify that, compared to previous works, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce both resource consumption and time complexity.
Design Integrated RSA for Multicast in Elastic Optical Networks with a Layered Approach

Abstract:In this paper, we incorporate a layered approach to design integrated multicast-capable routing and spectrum assignment (MC-RSA) algorithms for achieving efficient all-optical multicasting in spectrum-sliced elastic optical networks (EONs), which are based on the optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology. For each multicast request, the proposed algorithms decompose the physical topology into several layered auxiliary graphs according to the network spectrum utilization. Then, based on the request's bandwidth requirement, we select a proper layer and calculate a multicast light-tree within it. With these procedures, the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) for each multicast request is done in an integrated way. We evaluate the proposed algorithms in simulations of static network planning and dynamic network provisioning. The simulation results demonstrate that compared to the existing MC-RSA algorithms, our approaches achieve more efficient network planning in terms of spectrum utilization, and provide lower blocking probabilities in network provisioning.
How the Network Topology, Traffic Distribution, and Routing Scheme Impact on the Spectrum Usage in Elastic Optical Networks

Abstract:Elastic Optical Network (EON) has been considered as a promising optical networking technology to architect the next-generation backbone networks. Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) is the fundamental problem in EONs to realize service provisioning. Generally, the RSA is solved by routing the requests with lightpaths first and then assigning spectrum resources to the lightpaths to optimize the spectrum usage. Thus, the spectrum assignment explicitly decide the final spectrum usage of EONs. However, besides the spectrum assignment, there are three other factors, the network topology, traffic distribution and routing scheme, implicitly impact on the spectrum usage. Few related work involves in the implicit impact mechanism. In this paper, we aim to provide a thoroughly theoretical analysis on the impact of the three key factors on the spectrum usage. To this end, two theoretical chains are proposed: (1) The optimal spectrum usage can be measured by the chromatic number of the conflict graph, which is positively correlated to the intersecting probability, i.e., the smaller the intersecting probability, the smaller the optimal spectrum usage; (2) The intersecting probability is decided by the network topology, traffic distribution and routing scheme via a quadratic programming parameterized with a matrix of conflict coefficients. The effectiveness of our theoretical analysis has been validated by extensive numerical results. Meanwhile, our theoretical deductions also permit to give several constant approximation ratios for RSA algorithms.

Abstract:Elastic Optical Networks are considered to be a promising technology for future high-speed network. In this paper, we propose a RSA algorithm based on the ant colony optimization of minimum consecutiveness loss (ACO-MCL). Based on the effect of the spectrum consecutiveness loss on the pheromone in the ant colony optimization, the path and spectrum of the minimal impact on the network are selected for the service request. When an ant arrives at the destination node from the source node along a path, we assume that this path is selected for the request. We calculate the consecutiveness loss of candidate-neighbor link pairs along this path after the routing and spectrum assignment. Then, the networks update the pheromone according to the value of the consecutiveness loss. We save the path with the smallest value. After multiple iterations of the ant colony optimization, the final selection of the path is assigned for the request. The algorithms are simulated in different networks. The results show that ACO-MCL algorithm performs better in blocking probability and spectrum efficiency than other algorithms. Moreover, the ACO-MCL algorithm can effectively decrease spectrum fragmentation and enhance available spectrum consecutiveness. Compared with other algorithms, the ACO-MCL algorithm can reduce the blocking rate by at least 5.9% in heavy load.

Abstract:The study of online routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) problem has assumed increasing importance due to the exponential growth of dynamic traffic with uncertainty in elastic optical networks (EONs). This paper first formulates offline RSA as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) with the consideration of the time attribute, and then models online RSA by a carefully designed Markov decision process (MDP), including the state, action and reward. To deal with such a complex dynamic optimization problem, a novel algorithm based on the classic deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework, Deep Q-network (DQN), is developed. For further promoting the training efficiency, a dueling network architecture, an improved ɛ-greedy strategy and a series of parameter adjustments are applied. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and show its superiority in reducing the blocking probability compared with the state of the art, which further exhibits the potential of applying DRL to solve such complex real-time decision-making problems.

Abstract:Elastic optical networks (EONs) can make service accommodation more flexible and precise by employing efficient routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) algorithms. In order to improve the efficiency of RSA algorithms, the advanced-reservation technique was introduced into designing RSA algorithms. However, few of these advanced-reservation-based RSA algorithms were focused on the unavailable spectrum resources in EONs. In this paper, we propose an Advanced-Reservation-based Invalid-Spectrum-Aware (AR-ISA) resource allocation algorithm to improve the networking performance and the resource alignment of EONs. By employing a new index, Invalid Spectrum Rate (ISR), to record the proportion of unavailable spectrum resources in EONs, the proposed AR-ISA algorithm set a network load threshold to trigger the postponement of an arriving service. Compared with the traditional slack-based AR mechanism, the proposed algorithm has more concerns about the current spectrum usage of the path designated by the service than the conflicts between AR services and other existing services. To further increase the networking performance, the proposed algorithm adopts defragmentation to increase the number of available spectrum resources when postponing a service. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed AR-ISA algorithm has obvious effectiveness in reducing the service blocking rate and increasing the spectrum alignment rate.
Network Coding-based Routing and Spectrum Allocation in Elastic Optical Networks for Enhanced Physical Layer Security

Abstract:In this work, an eavesdropping-aware routing and spectrum allocation approach is proposed utilizing network coding (NC) in elastic optical networks (EONs). To provide physical layer security in EONs and secure the confidential connections against eavesdropping attacks using NC, the signals of the confidential connections are combined (XOR-ed) with other signals at different nodes in their path, while transmitted through the network. The combination of signals through NC significantly increases the security of confidential connections, since an eavesdropper must access all individual signals, traversing different links, in order to decrypt the combined signal. A novel heuristic approach is proposed, that solves the combined network coding and routing and spectrum allocation (NC-RSA) problem, that also takes into account additional NC constraints that are required in order to consider a confidential connection as secure. Different routing and spectrum allocation strategies are proposed, aiming to maximize the level of security provided for the confidential demands, followed by an extensive performance evaluation of each approach in terms of the level of security provided, as well as the spectrum utilization and blocking probability, under different network parameters. Performance results demonstrate that the proposed approaches can provide efficient solutions in terms of network performance, while providing the level of security required for each demand.

Abstract:The routing, core allocation and spectrum assignment (RSA) problem in elastic optical networks with multi-core is a well-known NP-hard problem and the network information security is also an important problem in elastic optical networks. In this paper, we combine these two problems to investigate the routing, core allocation and spectrum assignment problem with the guaranteed secure level in elastic optical network with multi-core. We establish a new optimization model to determine an optimal routing, core allocation scheme with the guaranteed secure level by minimizing the maximum sequence number of frequency slots. To solve the model effectively, we propose a hybrid algorithm for routing and core allocation. First, the candidate secure paths, which can guarantee the required secure level for connection requests, are determined by using a heuristic algorithm. Then, to get an optimal routing and core allocation scheme, an effective genetic algorithm with a tailor-made crossover operator and a well-designed mutation operator is designed. Finally, simulation experiments are conducted, and the experimental results indicate that the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm.
